WINE AND MOSHIACH

How does the wine at the seudat Moshiach (Meal of Messiah) relate to the concept of the Mes-siah? Typically, it is meat and fish that are the main parts of a seudah. But seudat Moshiach isunique in that the focus of the seudah is not the food that we eat, but the wine that we drink.Wine has a special connection to Moshiach, more so than food. Firstly, wine as the unique abili-ty to bring ordinarily hidden matters into the open. The Gemara [Sanhedrin 38a] says, “Whenwine goes in, secrets come out.” Indeed the gematria of        (wine) and        (secret) are both70. The Gemara relates [Pesachim, 119b] that when Moshiach comes and we merit to eat theseudat leviathon, all the tzaddikim will partake of the flesh, however, only Moshiach will makea bracha on the wine. Why? Because wine represents p’nimiyus haTorah (The Inner Dimen-sions of the Torah). Rabbi Shlomo DovBer explains, “[the expression] “the Tree of Life” refersto P’nimiyus HaTorah, the inner dimension of the Torah, as stated in [the passage from]the Raya Mehemna, Parshas Naso.” The Heoros Hatmimim v’Anash writes further that the “To-rah is described as "bread" and within Torah itself, the teachings of P'nimiyus HaTorah as"bread from Heaven," manna.” while meat corresponds to the revealed parts. Moshiach himselfis also tied to the p’nimiyus haTorah in that he will reveal the secrets (sod / wine) of the To-rah—Torah chadashah (A Renewed Torah).

WHY DO WE EAT A MEALAcharon Shel Pesach is the last day of the festival of Passover. It is intrinsically tied to the geu-lah (the final redemption) on a very profound level. This is evidenced by the haftarah that isread on Acharon Shel Pesach (Isaiah 10:32-12:6), which speaks about Messiah Yeshua and theFinal Redemption that He will initiate, may it be soon and in our time! One might expect thatwhen dealing with such a deep concept, the emphasis would be expressed through a seeminglymore spiritual ritual. So why is it that this idea is commemorated with a meal, as a seudah? Thereason is that a religious meal reaches us on both a spiritual and physical level. In other words,in impacts the whole person. Therefore, this is the novelty of the Meal of Messiah. Food be-comes an actual part of the person’s flesh and blood. The essence of the meal and its spiritualmessage the becomes a literal part of our essence. We carry that essence with us through therest of the year!

The Meal of Messiah

The seventh day of Pesach is called Acharon shel Pesach which means “the last day ofPassover”. According to Shemot 12:16, it too is a Yom Tov. The Torah readings for thisspecial day center around the crossing of the Red Sea and the song of the sea. It representsthe final redemption, the swallowing up of death (as represented by the army of Egypt)and the revelation of HaShem in all of His glory. It was at the parting of the sea when wewere able to point at HaShem and exclaim “This is my G-d and I will worship Him!” As theSages have said in the Mekhilta, “The lowliest maidservant saw at the splitting of the seawhat Isaiah and Ezekiel and all the prophets were never able to see.”

In the seventeenth century, the Baal Shem Tov (Rabbi Israel ben Eliezer) instituted theMeal of the Messiah (Seudat Moshiach) to be held in the late afternoon of the seventh day.The purpose was to emphasis the connection of Acharon she Pesach to the finalredemption and to heighten our desire for the coming of Moshiach. Originally, the mainceremonial element of the meal was simply matzah. The Rebbe Rashab, the fifth Rebbe ofChabad (1860-1920) later added the custom of drinking four cups of wine. It has become ajoyful conclusion to Pesach and a focus on longing for the final Exodus.

The meal should be festive, including singing and even dancing. The topic of conversationshould center on the Messiah Yeshua, His connection to the season and the future promiseof His return, may it be soon and in our time, amein.

“The last day of Pesach is our festival commemorating the final redemption, when the HolyOne, Blessed be He, will redeem us from the last exile through our righteous Moshiach, whois the final redeemer. The first day of Pesach is Moshe Rabbeinu’s festival; the last day ofPesach is Moshiach’s festival.” Tzemach Tzedek, the third Lubavitcher Rebbe, in LikkuteiSichos 22:34

The Sod Level of the MealWe see the relationship between the last day of Pesach and Moshiach. However, why is itnecessary to mark this time with a special seudat Moshiach?

Belief in Moshiach is a cardinal tenet of the Jewish faith and one of Rambam’s thirteenprinciples of belief:21 “I believe with perfect faith in the coming of Moshiach; and althoughhe may tarry, I will wait for him every day that he shall come.” True faith requires action. We have to internalize our Emunah in the Messiah rather than simply have an intellectualidea. Our intellectual awareness must be translated into a physical act. We must “bringMoshiach to the Temple” that is the Temple of our hearts. We accomplish this by eating ofMoshiach’s seudah. We are what we eat, literally. The food from the Meal of Messiahbecomes part of our flesh and blood. Our longing for Messiah permeates our entire being, body soul and spirit. One might say that at the seder we eat the Afikomen whichrepresents the broken body of Moshiach, the Messiah ben Yosef. At the Seudat Moshiach,

we eat of the whole matzah, the risen Savior, Messiah ben David. It is a perfect completionto the festival of freedom.

“This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat and not die. I am theliving bread, which came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever. This bread is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”Then the Jews began arguing with one another, “How can this man give us His flesh to

eat?” So Yeshua said to them, “Amen, amen I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son ofMan and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. He who eats My flesh and drinksMy blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. “For My flesh is real foodand My blood is real drink.” Yochanan 6:50-55

Living Messiah - The First Cup Pour the first cup

Now on the first day of the week, at daybreak, the women came to the tomb, carrying thespices they had prepared. They found the stone had been rolled away from the tomb; butwhen they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Yeshua. And while they were per-plexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. The womenwere terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do yousearch for the living among the dead? He is not here, but He is risen! Remember what Hetold you when He was still in the Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered intothe hands of sinful men, and be executed, and on the third day rise up.” And they were re-minded of His words. And when they returned from the tomb, they told all these things tothe eleven and to everyone else. Now it was Miriam from Magdala, Joanna, the Miriam ofJacob and others together with them who were telling these things to the emissaries. Butthese words appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them. But Kefa gotup and ran to the tomb. Leaning in, he sees only the linen cloths. And he went away to hishome, marveling at what had happened. Luke 24:1-12

WE THANK YOU, HaShem Our G-d, for sending Messiah Yeshua as Messiah benYosef, Who suffered for the sins of Israel and has become the Savior of the World. Helives and because we have come to know Him, we live. Hasten the return of theMoshiach to us. Ki LiYeshuatecha kivinu kol haYom u’metzafim l’Yeshua (for we hopefor Your salvation (Yeshua) all the day and we look forward to salvation (Yeshua)).

Yeshua Appears to JamesAnd when the Lord had given his linen cloth to the servant of the priest he went to Jamesand appeared unto him. For James had sworn that he would not eat bread from that hourwherein he had drunk the cup of the Lord until he saw him rising again from thedead...."Bring a table and bread." And he took up the bread and blessed and broke and af-terward gave to James the Just and said to him, "My brother, eat thy bread, for the Son ofMan is risen from them that sleep." The Road to Emmaus

Now behold, two of them on that very day were traveling to a village named Emmaus, adistance of about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were speaking with one another aboutall the things that had been happening. While they were talking and discussing, YeshuaHimself approached and began traveling with them. But their eyes were kept from recog-nizing Him. Then He said to them, “What are these things you are discussing with one an-other as you are walking along?” They stood still, looking gloomy. Then the one namedCleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem who doesn’tknow the things that happened there in these days?” Yeshua said to them, “What kind ofthings?” And they said to Him, “The things about Yeshua from Natzeret, who was a Prophet, powerful in deed and word before G-d and all the people how the ruling kohanim and ourleaders handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and they executed Him. But we werehoping that He was the One about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, today is the third daysince these things happened. “But also some women among us amazed us. Early in themorning they were at the tomb. When they didn’t find His body, they came saying thatthey had also seen a vision of angels, who said He is alive! Some of those with us went tothe tomb and found it just as the women said, but they did not see Him.” Yeshua said tothem, “Oh foolish ones, so slow of heart to put your trust in all that the prophetsspoke! Was it not necessary for Messiah to suffer these things and to enter into Hisglory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them the thingswritten about Himself in all the Scriptures.

They approached the village where they were going, and He acted as though He were goingfarther on. But they urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day isalready gone.” So He went in to stay with them. And it happened that when He was reclin-ing at the table with them, He took the matzah, offered a bracha and, breaking it, gave it tothem. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, and He disappeared fromthem. They said to one another, “Didn’t our heart burn within us while He was speakingwith us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?” Luke 24:13-31

The Glorious MoshiachHow glorious is Messiah of the House of Judah! His loins girded, he will go out to do battlewith his enemies. No king and no ruler will prevail against him. The mountains will be dyedred with their blood, and the garments of Messiah will be like the garments of him thatpresseth wine. The eyes of Messiah will be clearer than pure wine, for they will neverbehold unchastity and bloodshed; and his teeth will be whiter than milk, for never will theybite aught that is taken by violence." Legends of the Jews 2:1:397

The Abundant VineIt is told that a certain scribe went to Jerusalem each year, and the people of Jerusalemknew that he was an outstanding student of the law. They said to him: “Take these fiftypieces of gold and dwell among us.” “I have only a single vine,” he replied, “but it is morevaluable than anything you can offer me, for it provides me with three crops a year fromwhich I gather six hundred barrels of grapes. The first crop produces three hundredbarrels, the second, two hundred, and the third, one hundred; and I am able to sell them ata considerable profit.” What did he do? He left them and returned to his vine. He receivedthis reward because he poured the wine as on offering upon the altar. If he had failed topour the wine, the good things of the world would have been withheld from him. MidrashTanchuma Tetzaveh 13:5

The True Vine“I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener. Every branch in Me that does not bearfruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He trims so that it may bear more

fruit. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and Iwill abide in you. The branch cannot itself produce fruit, unless it abides on the vine. Like-wise, you cannot produce fruit unless you abide in Me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for apart from Me, you can donothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away like a branch and is dried up.Such branches are picked up and thrown into the fire and burned. “If you abide in Me andMy words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you. In this My Fa-ther is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples.”Yochanan 15:1-8

Feasting on the Divine PresenceRav used to say: The World-to-Come is not like this world. In the World-to-Come there isno eating, no drinking, no procreation, no business negotiations, no jealousy, no hatred, and no competition. Rather, the righteous sit with their crowns upon their heads, enjoyingthe splendor of the Divine Presence, as it is stated: “And they beheld G-d, and they ate anddrank” (Exodus 24:11), meaning that beholding G-d’s countenance is tantamount to eatingand drinking. Berachot 17a

The Food of the Elders on SinaiDid they [in Shemot 24:11] bring cakes with them to Mount Sinai that the verse states,“They gazed at G-d , and they ate and drank.” Rather, this teaches that they feasted theireyes upon the Divine Presence, as one who looks at his friend who is eating and drinking

May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth, for your love is better than wine. Song ofSongs 1:2

The Torah and WinePassion aroused by the drinking of wine is not true love, and it passes away. G-d’s love isbetter than wine….Similarly, Israel says, “Your love is better than wine.” The redemptionmust come from G-d Himself. [RAMBEL: a redemption from anyone other than HaShem isnot a true redemption nor one which will last.]…the Torah is the daughter of the SupremeKing, the King of kings, whom he loves with an ardent passion. He is impatient for thepromised time when the Jewish people will be taught by G-d himself, as it is written, “Allyour sons shall be taught by the Lord.” (Isaiah 54:13)….Torah transforms the person andfosters excellence of mind and spiritual greatness. Therefore, “Your love is better thanwine.” Wine merely affect’s a man’s mood, but Torah affects his essential being. Me’amLo’ez to Song of Songs 1:2
