Trending

Why Loss Control Trending?

Trending is a way to predict the future.

The past will repeat itself.

The past, “unless a change is implemented”

history will repeat itself.

Why Loss Control Trending?Trending is the most effective and most efficient method to

develop goals.

Most Effective: A clear predictor of the future to establish a target or goal.

Most Efficient: Avoid spending resources in areas not specifically targeted.

Areas for Loss Control Trending? Most Common Trending:

Workers Compensation (Employee Injuries)Auto (Liability) and (Physical Damage)General Liability (injury to the public)Property (losses to county owned property)

UNDESIRABLE TRENDS (LOSSES/INJURIES) CAN BE CHANGED.

Trending Terminology:Frequency: The number of events that occur “by type” most

often.

Severity: The most costly event(s).

Target: The goal(s) established to make a change.

Impact: The overall results of the target.

How do I determine my County’s Frequency and Severity TRENDS?

There are several methods to obtain trending data but historical methods are normally best.

The 2 best sources of historical data are loss histories and accident investigations.

1. Trending information can be developed from annualized loss histories (1, 2 or 3 years).

2. Trending Can be developed from Accident Investigation Reports.

What else will “Frequency” Trending tell us? In 2011 the county employees incurred 21 employee

injuries. In 2012 the county employees incurred 29 employee

injuries. In 2013 (1st 6 months) the county employees incurred 19

employee injuries and 38 employees injured annualized.

UP.

What else will “Severity” Trending tell us? In 2011 the county employees incurred 21 employee

injuries costing $286,155 In 2012 the county employees incurred 29 employee

injuries costing $293,925 In 2013 (1st 6 months) the county employees incurred 19

employee injuries costing $228,050. ($456,100 annualized)

HINT: $286,155, $293,925, $456,100The Severity of Costs are going up.

Hint: 21, 29, 38The Frequency or number of employee injuries are going UP.

BOTH the Frequency and the Severity are going up!

Now What?

What Should you do?

What Should the County commissioners, administrators, engineers, risk managers and designated safety persons do?

Why Trending? Now What? What Should we do?

Every employee in a public sector has a:

Moral - Responsibility to provide a safe work place

Social - Responsibility to provide a safe work place

Financial - Responsibility to provide a safe work

place

• Why Trending?• Now What?• What Should we do?

Trending is a way to TARGET and focus our Goals and actions toChange the future and Impact the results.

The past will repeat itself.

The past, “unless a change is implemented” history will repeat itself.

Take Aim and develop a “SPECIFIC TARGET”

If a duck hunter shoots every shot he/she has and does not take specific aim, he or she will not hit any intended game and simply will not be successful.

We often attempt to control the safety outcome with the same general principals as taking a shotgun approach and just shooting our entire efforts to reduce our exposures to loss. This too will not hit any intended goal and simply will not be successful.

Take Aim and develop a “SPECIFIC TARGET”

Take aim at a specific target like a hunter with a scoped rifle. Put the crosshairs directly on the intended target and most often you will hit the mark and you will be successful. If we take aim at our specific Frequency and Severity causes, we will develop goals aimed at our Target and will hit the mark with our entire efforts and we will be successful at reducing our exposures to loss. Reduce your exposures and you will have fewer losses (Impact).

Goal

TARGET/GOAL

TARGET: Take aim. Never take the shotgun approach and try to hit everything. Take AIM and be specific.TARGET your activities to change the results and Impact the outcome.

Summary

Trending is the most effective and most efficient method to develop goals.

Most Effective: A clear predictor of the future to establish a target or goal.

Most Efficient: Avoid spending resources in areas not specifically targeted.

Once your Frequency (or number of events that occur

most often) and your Severity (or most costly events) are known;

You can establish a Target or specific goal(s) to positively change the future.

Efforts aimed at a specific target/goal will Impact the overall results of the target.

1. Frequency2. Severity 3. Target4. Impact

ALL can be changed by the direction you apply your energies.

The Future is in YOUR Hands
