David weir among nine British Paralympic medallists to star in birminghamRelive the magic of the London 2012 Paralympic Games by securing an exclusive family ticket offer to the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix – Birmingham, which will host the inaugural IPC Athletics Grand Prix Final at the Birmingham Alexander Stadium on Saturday 29 June.

For just £40, 2 adults and 2 children can experience the extraordinary talents of the world top paralympians in an inspirational family day out.

Nine British London 2012 medallists will set the track and field alight in Birmingham as gold medallists Hannah Cockroft, Jonnie Peacock, Richard Whitehead and David Weir join in all-star international line-up as the seven meet Grand Prix series comes to an explosive end.

After events staged in Dubai, Beijing, Sao Paulo, Grosseto, Arizona and Berlin, the world’s top six ranked athletes in each event will be invited to compete in the IPC Athletics Grand Prix Final, the culmination of a global challenge, just three weeks before the IPC World Championships in Lyon.

Cockroft, who is the current Paralympic and World Champion over 100m and 200m, is excited at the prospect of competing on home soil nearly a year on from her Paralympic Games triumph at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back out on the track in front of a British crowd for the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix - Birmingham. This will be the first opportunity many athletes will have had to thank the fans for the support we had during London 2012, so it’s going to be a great occasion for all of us.”

Do you employ people?Employment law can be a minefield, especially for small businesses run by busy owner managers.

And with recent and planned changes in the law, coupled with the poor economic climate, now more than ever employers need to ensure they comply with the relevant legislation. In this issue’s ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ feature we meet Kate Garrett, Solicitor who specialises in employment law acting on behalf of both employers and employees.

Kate often meets new clients when they have reached a crisis point, faced for example with the threat of a tribunal claim such as unfair dismissal.

Her advice to employers is to obtain legal advice prior to making any decisions which will affect employees. It may only take a couple of hours to obtain legal advice which, when compared to the time and cost involved in defending a tribunal claim, is time and money well spent.

Much of Kate’s advice is pure common sense but she is surprised by how often basic practices and procedures are ignored by employers for example, the requirement for employees to receive a Written Statement of the main terms and conditions of employment within two calendar months of starting work. And if a business is looking to reduce pay or hours there needs to be a formal two-way consultation process.

Finally Kate stresses that when faced with a disgruntled employee or ex-employee there is an alternative to going through a tribunal. In some cases a Compromise Agreement can be

used removing the need to attend the tribunal. A Compromise Agreement may sometimes be a difficult choice to make when emotions are running high – but they can potentially reduce the overall cost to the employer.

Kate will always look at her clients’ problems on an individual basis and help them find the most practical and economical way of sorting them out.

For more information or to make an appointment you can call Kate on 0121 693 2222

Local lottery supports local charityTLC Lottery has provided vital income for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice in the past 12 months, funding much-needed care in the community.

Thanks to over £130,000 raised last year through TLC, the Hospice’s Community Palliative Care Team has been able to make 985 visits to patients in their own homes.

This is an amazing figure and enables the Selly Park-based charity to help people live better with their conditions, which range from cancer and multiple sclerosis to motor neurone disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The Team’s Clinical Nurse Specialists make a difference to people with terminal illnesses through

their extensive experience and knowledge of palliative care.

They work with and advise GPs and community nurses to make sure patients have effective symptom relief and provide psychological support to patients and families referred to them.

The Team also acts as a link between the community and the Hospice’s other services, so if and when a person’s condition does change more intensive services can be made available quickly.

World class tennis comes to EdgbastonA world-class player field has been announced for the Aegon Classic, staged on the grass courts of the Edgbaston Priory Club from 9th to 16th June.

Joining the previously named British No.1 Laura Robson, British No.2 Heather Watson, and world No.14 and French No. 1 Marion Bartoli, the 2013 player line up is one of the most exciting the tournament has ever seen.

The confirmed list includes current doubles co-world No. 1 Italian Roberta Vinci, who recently rose to a career high of world No. 12 in the singles rankings, and world No. 34 Italian Francesca Schiavone, who had her first victory in 12 months in April in Marrakech.

Grass court pedigree players also confirmed to play include the world No. 30 and Austrian No. 1 Tamira Paszek whose season last year was highlighted by a nine-match grass court winning streak, including winning her third WTA title at the Aegon International, Eastbourne; and world No. 24 Ekaterina Makarova from Russia who achieved her career high ranking of No. 19 early this year in January.

The 2013 Aegon Classic also welcomes back defending champion Melanie Oudin of the USA who is currently ranked world No.98, and 2011’s Aegon Classic winner Sabine Lisicki from Germany, who last year reached the quarter finals of The Championships, Wimbledon, and is only the second woman in history to make it to the Wimbledon semi-finals after entering the tournament as a wild card.

The Aegon Classic offers the chance to see some of the world’s top international female tennis players, returning to the Edgbaston Priory Club for the 32nd time.

For tickets from £10 or more information go to www.aegonclassic.co.uk/tickets or call 0844 209 7359.

Taking the plunge for charity

People paid to see accountants, bankers and lawyers throw themselves off a tall building in Edgbaston!

A sponsored abseil took centre stage at a family fun day held by Edward’s Trust.

Around 50 people abseiled down the 100 ft building, including teams from accountants Chantrey Vellacott DFK, Tyndallwoods Solicitors, Barclays and specialist protein company The Binding Site. The event raised around £12,000 and is expected to rise to close to £20,000 once all sponsorship funds are collected.

Edward’s Trust supports children and families during serious illness

and bereavement and needs to raise £500,000 of funding every year.

The event was the first sponsored abseil held by the Edward’s Trust and could become an annual fixture.

For more information go to www.edwardstrust.org.uk or telephone 0121 456 4838.

Charitable Trust formed bringing the magic of music to the disabledThe aim of OHMI, the One-Handed Musical Instrument Trust, is to create new instruments that can provide full and undifferentiated participation in musical life for people with physical disabilities; whether at school, in the home, or in a professional ensemble. The success of the Trust will have a profound impact not just on individuals but on society’s relationship with disability, opening new realms of achievement and possibility.

Martin Dyke of Tyndallwoods worked with Stephen Hetherington to found the Trust and to achieve registration as a charity. A competition has been organised challenging competitors to develop a musical instrument that can be played without the use of one hand and that can fully emulate

a traditional instrument. It is hoped that OHMI can bring to music what has become possible in the Paralympics for sport.

To find out more about the work of the charity or to take part in the competition please visit www.ohmi.org.uk

Storytelling Festival – When Stories, Plants and Wildlife MeetEveryone loves a good story – for centuries stories have helped us to understand the world around us. A story can tell you something that you feel but can’t explain in the usual way.

Midsummer sees the return of the Martineau Gardens Storytelling Festival. Taking place on Saturday 22 June, from 11am – 5pm, the community garden in Edgbaston is the leafy setting for this family-friendly event. Presented by the Traditional Arts Team, there will be entertainment for every age group. There will be live storytelling performances from a host of storytellers, in locations around the Gardens.

Enjoy a summer’s day in a wild and green corner of Birmingham, and be entertained by the power of storytelling.
