The Danube is the 2nd longest river in Europe after the Volga, and it has been a transport mode since ancient times.

Its accelerated development began in 1856; it was in Galati that the first union of states that have proposed to work together in order to ensure a safe and efficient transportation corridor for goods between the Danube and the Black Sea and vice versa was formed;

This is how the European Danube Commission was created; its members then were: the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Second French Empire, the United Kingdom, Prussia, the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Ottoman Empire

Since this date the Danube has grown considerably, especially regarding the maritime area: Sulina Channel up to Braila (over a length of 175 km).

Due to these factors the ports from this area have also expanded: Braila, Galati and Tulcea; these ports are now under the administration of the Maritime Danube Ports Administration in Galati.

The company is under the authority of the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and it has been concessioned by the state the port land (the public domain).

Conclusions

• The Romanian maritime ports of Braila, Galati and Tulcea are extremely attractive:

• Close to non-EU countries (8 km between Galati and the Moldavian border, 23 km to the Ukrainian port of Reni, 80 Nm to the Black Sea);

• Close to the Middle East, Turkey and Western Europe;• Each port has a considerable length of railways, the Port of Galati

having special facilities, especially the Russian standard railway network right along the berths, making it possible for the cargo to transit CIS boundaries without rail gauge change;

• Free Zones in Galati and Braila;• A new container terminal with starting capacity of 30 000 TEU in

Galati Port;

Conclusions• Development strategy for the future of the Romanian Danube ports of

Galati, Braila and Tulcea• Turning Galati Port into a logistic platform serving the

commercial exchanges between the Western/Central European countries and the Eastern European countries, as an alternative to the road transport.

• Developing Galati Port for the short sea shipping navigation through Sulina Channel with the purpose to deplete Constanta Port of the vessels with a tonnage below 7500 tdw or more but must respect the draft below 24 feet (7.32 m).

• Developing Braila Port into a specialized port for grain ;• Increasing the use of Tulcea Port by vessels (IWT and sea-going)

dedicated to leisure activities: cruise ships, pleasure boats

Page 28: MDPA GALATI. The Danube is the 2nd longest river in Europe after the Volga, and it has been a transport mode since ancient times. Its accelerated development

Conclusions

• Developing the port services and facilities as follows:• Improving the ship waste collection & treatment facilities in the

ports of Galati, Braila and Tulcea with the possibility of extending the services on the entire Danube stretch administered by the company;

• Interventions in case of accidental pollution;

• Improving the power supply facilities for sea-going vessels in order to reduce the noise level and the polluting emissions

• Fresh water supply systems for IWT and sea-going vessels
