YOu Grew up A MiliTArY brAT AND NOw YOu Are A MiliTArY wife. Tell us AbOuT ThAT.Growing up, every time I was asked where I was from, my response was always complicated. “Do you mean where I was born? Where I have lived the longest? Or where most of my relatives live?” I would get strange looks. It was not supposed to be a difficult question, but my answer always was. To make it easy, I would answer all the questions that came to mind. I was born in Fayetteville, NC, I have lived in Fayetteville the most years of my life, and most of my relatives live in NC. I guess you could say I am from Fayetteville, NC.

However, I have had such an incredible lifestyle growing up all over the place. It has definitely been an adventure. From birth until the age of 18, lived in North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, Kansas, and Ger-many. Germany was awesome and the best place I have lived. Not many teenagers can say they had their prom in a historical castle. Not only that, but I had the opportunity to visit Gibral-tar, Spain, the Canary Islands, France, Holland, Italy, Ireland and South Africa. Through my travels, I have learned to love other cultures and embrace diversity. My grandfathers and dad served in the military. Currently, my brother and my husband serve in the military and I know they can all agree that through the military, the adventure never ends.

Tell us AbOuT YOur experieNCe As AN MDM COVer Girl. From the time I got to the salon for hair and makeup until my video interview at the end, the total time it took for the shoot was 10 hours. I have a completely new respect for models, photographers, and the crew behind making photo shoots happen. Everyone works equally hard. For me, I think the toughest thing was to pose the right way. Whatever I felt looked good, looked really awkward on camera. Most of the time my most awkward poses looked really beautiful on the camera. I tried to listen to the photographer and the MDM stylists and did what they said. They are the experts and they know what looks best. If they say turn my head to the right while arching my back and looking up but relaxing my

jaw, you had better believe that is exactly what I am going to try to do. Although, it was a long day, it was well worth every minute of it! It is such an honor to be an MDM Cover Girl and would do it again in a heartbeat.

DiD YOu eNjOY YOur MDM COVer shOOT?I loved everything about the photo shoot. I loved the collaboration between the MDM crew, the photographers and myself. I really appreciated how everyone had a say during the whole thing and we tried it. Whether it was trying to figure out the background or the pose for the perfect shot, we all were able to speak our minds and try it out. I also loved the location of the shoot. I could not have asked for a better location than the PIC waterpark. It was a blast!

ADVICE

HE SAID, SHE SAIDDear Mark and Jacqueline,

I am uncomfortable about one of my friends having a friendship with one of my old flames. My friend is a sweet girl who would never do anything to offend anybody. My ex is also a decent person, I guess, but he doesn’t have as pure intentions as my friend does, trust me. Recently the two of them have become chummy and I don’t like it. I am not jealous nor do I want to get back together with my ex, I just feel so uncomfortable about them rubbing elbows. Why am I feeling this way?

W.F.

he sAYs: It is completely understandable why you would feel uncomfortable.   Friendships usually include a certain degree of loyalty and support.  But being friends with your ex means she may take on some of his perspectives against you. I would suggest mentioning your concerns to your friend, and allowing her to make her own choice.  She could ignore you and continue her new friendship, or she could understand and respect your feelings. Either way, it will be a good indication of the quality of your friendship.  On the other hand, another indicator of good friendship is understanding your friends have the right to interact with whomever they choose.

she sAYs: This is a precarious situation. On the one hand you can seem to be reacting perfectly naturally. On the other, you come off as jealous. Worse, you can seem like you are hung up on him as well as jealous. I understand you just feel like your worlds are colliding. Someone from your past is developing a relationship with someone from your present and you don’t like the way it feels. Maybe you don’t want to be reminded of something that happened when you were involved with him. Maybe you don’t want him to be in the know of what you are doing now. Maybe it is both. What you are feeling is completely natural. I suggest you put your best foot forward and avoid situations where you run into your ex. These feelings will pass. Trust me.

... Friendships usually include a certain degree of loyalty and support. But being friends with your ex means she may take on some of his perspectives against you.

The Guam International Film Festival held its second annual event Sept. 28 thru Sept. 30. Muna Brothers, Don, executive director and Kel, program director, orga-nized the festival and kicked off the GIFF with a launch party on the 27th at Zen Ultra Lounge and a film screening on Friday evening featuring Guam filmmaker Julius Sotomayor Cena’s “MGA DAYO” (Resident Aliens). The event featured a total of 56 films over the weekend. The film festival “is a place where we can showcase films that Guam or any distributer normally wouldn’t be able to afford to show-case,” said Don Muna. “When we first started GIFF we thought of it as an international platform to showcase local works. When Don and I did our film we didn’t have that resource locally;

it takes a lot of money and time. The purpose of GIFF is to give the local artist that platform to be seen among acclaimed and high profile films that are making their rounds in interna-tional festival circuits. So some of the films we featured this year are Grand Jury Award winners of festivals such as Slamdance. It seems to be working because we have films from Academy Award winners and they are sharing the stage with local Guam filmmakers,” Kel Muna said. “We are growing into our mission and have stumbled onto our slogan ‘community, education, and entertain-ment,’ in that order. We want to engage more within our community and educate through film. I feel that film is one of the mediums that is a universal vessel that everyone can relate to. We utilize this opportunity to search for films that are relevant to us culturally and in our diverse community that will

GIFF second annual event held in Septemberbring together a very diverse crowd,” said Don Muna. “With our second year we are re-ally excited that we have close to 200 films submitted from 27 countries. In just a short amount of time we were able to gain a reputation as being an up and coming notable film fest in Asia Pacific, now we have high profile Korean filmmakers coming in and sharing their culture as well as Japanese and Marshall Islands filmmakers,” said Kel Muna. The goal of GIFF is to promote the island. The Muna brothers would like to create the attraction for distri-bution companies to look to Guam as an opportunity to find their next independent film or as a viable loca-tion to shoot films. Ultimately they would like to be able to sponsor a filmmaker in the years to come. GIFF included film screenings, gala events, award presentations

and film workshops. Key film-makers spoke and shared their knowledge of the industry. One of the workshops featured Professor Tom Brislan from the University of Hawaii. Brislan held a master class called “Creating an industry.” Key points included the importance of media commercially, culturally and academically. If you are an aspiring filmmaker, producer or actor, the Muna broth-ers share these words of advice, “Just do it, just go for it because you’ll know after that. You have to go through the whole process to know, and if you do or don’t at least you can make an educated decision. Just believe in yourself,” Kel Muna said. “If you don’t love it, don’t do it, because it’s not worth it. If it is worth it, call on your friends and family; get some advice.Pull your resources and start pressing record,” said Don.

Make your Thanksgiving dinner a reward for two great weeks of nutrition and exercise. Take out your weekly cheat day in the week prior to Thanksgiving and make Thanksgiving dinner the cheat day for that week. Enjoy your time with family and your favorite foods. Then get one heck of a good workout in the next day. Don’t think of it as punishment; rather remind yourself that those calories can either make you faster or fatter. The difference will

Turkey is poultry and has some key similarities to, and differences from, chicken. For a three-ounce serving size, turkey has fewer calo-ries, fat, sodium and cholesterol than chicken. It also has compara-ble amounts of protein depending on the piece selected. (http://www.fsis.usda.gov/PDF/Chicken_Turkey_Nutrition_Facts.pdf) One common myth is that the tryptophan found in turkey is the cause for the after-binge lethargy. The truth is that tryptophan is more abundant in chicken, pork and cheese than in turkey. The post dinner “sleepies” are more likely the result of simple overeating, alcohol consumption

Depending on the preparation it can be healthier than chicken and beef, and is not the pathway to nap time that people think. There are many recipes available for suggestions on preparation and side dishes. I am quite partial to the traditional stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy and dinner roll common on Thanksgiving Day. The next day I get a long bike ride and some strength training in to balance out the calorie consumption. Enjoy your turkey time with family, and throughout the year. Your body will thank you.

Turkey is now sold year-round as breasts, legs, wings, and even ground to behave quite like ground beef. Turkey legs can be smoked (they sell them like this at many major amusement parks), and can even be used in place of pork to add something special to slow-cooked vegetables. Many restaurants now serve turkey burgers. The only caveat to ground turkey is that it is not inherently lower in fat than ground beef. When you read the label it will tell you the protein to

I can almost smell it. It’s the delicious not quite chicken, but recognizably delicious aroma of the Thanksgiving turkey baking to golden perfection in the oven. It beckons us to the table every fourth Thursday in November. We may have heard the story of the pilgrims and the Indians siting around a table partaking of the year’s harvest and celebrating the passing of the summer. But what’s the truth about turkey? And besides Thanksgiving what can we do with it?

Somjai Detdon, manager and owner of Somjai’s Wild Bill’s II first opened the bar’s doors five years ago, next to Sakura Noodle House, across from Wise Owl Animal Hospital off Camp Watkins Road. The bar’s location makes the venue a quiet spot with tons of potential for patrons who are looking for more of a home away from home atmosphere while having a good time. The sports bar has a spacious 1,800-square-foot interior that can accommodate up to 100 patrons. Complete with five flat-screen televisions to watch the day’s sports games, an Internet jukebox,

two pool tables, dart boards and several video game machines, Wild Bill’s makes it hard to run out of activities to keep patrons occupied. The jukebox makes listening to today’s hottest tracks easy through Internet download or patrons can enjoy some old school jams already in the jukebox’s music list. “Lately, we have been picking up be-cause I sponsor the darts teams and pool leagues. We can get busy here, we host fundraisers and any kind of event really,” Somjai says. At Wild Bill’s II the everyday low prices for drinks and free

Happy hour specials are also available for pool tables at $1 an hour from 3p.m. to 7 p.m.,” says Somjai. If beer is not exactly your drink of choice the experienced bartenders at Wild Bill’s will happily create a cocktail of your liking. Priding herself on creating a welcoming atmosphere Somjai surrounds herself with friends, employing four bartenders and herself to accommodate her patrons, “We have very

Frequented by many, Somjai said the patrons are normally business profes-sionals, and customers whose ages range from 25 years old and up who are just looking to unwind after a long day’s work. Somjai says she enjoys being able to interact with her customers and has found her niche through running her bar. “If you have never been to Wild Bill’s please come down and check us out,” says Somjai. Once you visit Wild Bill’s you will see why the bar is frequented by patrons who have since become regulars.

Hafa adai and what’s up to my peepsquad? Wow, it’s almost Turkey Day! It’s this time of the year that people most often share what they are thankful for. It goes without saying that I am super thankful for my family, my kids, my woman, my job and all of you, my friends. That takes care of all the deep thoughts and serious thankfulness.

The other day, somebody asked me what I was really thankful for, family and mushy aside. To which I responded, “Read my MDM column next month, and thanks for the idea.”

It is with that in mind that I present — The plANeT kYle reAl life GuiDe TO ThiNGs ThAT i AM ThANkful fOr ThAT AreN’T MushY.

Well, I told you what I was thankful for, now I want to hear from you. Send me your submissions and we shall discuss next month. Please send it to me at [email protected]; or check me out on facebook.com/kyle.mandapat or on Twitter @kylemandpat. Until next month, see you on the radio!

Plain and simple, Guam is freaking hot, yeah? Can you imagine a world without shorts? Can you imagine having to wear pants all the time, everywhere? Seriously, I am not a skinny dude and I sweat enough wearing shorts. You do not want to imagine me wearing pants and sweating to the oldies. That cannot be good for anyone. I think everyone should be grateful that shorts were created, without them there would be a whole lot more stinky people around. Trust me, what if you had to work with those stinky dudes? Or what if one of them was your doctor? Eww…

As far as being thankful for people is concerned, there is no other woman that I would be more thankful for, than former WWE Womens and Intercontinental Champion, the Ninth Wonder of the World — Chyna. She has shown us so much over the years. From her athleticism in the ring, to her beauty in pictures and on film, Chyna is for sure one of the biggest celebrities in the world and a true treasure to the planet. I am glad that she is around to show people that buff chicks are awesome. I totally thank her for the fact that 87%

of women on Guam know how to bush cut.

Finally, I am thankful for the best creation in modern history. This invention is far more important than mega TVs, sliced bread, the rice cooker, etc. This innovation has allowed everyone to share all their joyous occasions with friends and families inside and out and it has helped to make sure every person on Guam, knows what the heck is going on with Gina and her new boyfriend and whether it’s complicated. I am talking about the rumor factory known to the world as Facebook. I am thankful for Facebook because I can reunite with friends, call out people who aren’t my friends, start a farm, a war with the Mafia and get bejeweled all without leaving my desk...

It is never too early to start saving various financial institutions offer savings programs such as Christmas club accounts. Jacqueline “Jackie” Marati, senior vice president of Bank of Guam says, “Open up a savings account and make regular contributions every payday. You will earn interest while making contributions to the account. Deposits can be made at any time and a check is cut at the end of the account’s term.

Creating a holiday budget will set you in the right direction. “Know how much money you have to spend. If you started saving early you can use the balance of your holiday savings account as your max budget. Also, consider all of the things you will be spending on, not just the presents,” says Darrick Bollinger, consumer loan supervisor at Coast360 Federal Credit Union.

Let’s take a look at 8 tips that will help you get through this holiday season with a lot of cheer and without leaving a hole in your pocketbook.

You created a budget now stick to it! Easier said than done for most but it can be done with self-restraint. You can still be flexible and stick to the budget you’ve created. “Don’t go overboard; remember what you are doing and try to stick within that budget,” says Michael Camacho, president of Personal Finance Co.

Maximize your dollar by making wise purchases; hunt for the deals; pay cash as much as pos-sible to avoid paying interest on credit card purchases. Shop early, remember to buy local when you can, to avoid shipping costs. However, if you do plan on shop-ping online do your research. There are many online sites that offer holiday savings and deals.

You’ve decided to get a credit card to help you cover the costs of the season. Keep this in mind — credit cards may create the illusion of having money but it is borrowed money and will accrue interest on the items purchased. Marati says, “Before applying for a credit card, make sure that you know the costs and benefits of credit cards. If you must use your credit card to make a purchase, use the card with the lowest interest rate.”

Many consumers are looking for additional sources of funds during the holidays. Loan options are available through financial institu-tions. “If you have less than per-fect credit or are trying to rebuild your credit there are secured loans available to consumers regardless of credit history. This is a good ways to re-establish one’s credit standing,” says Bollinger.

Pay off purchases made with credit cards as soon as possible. “To avoid finance charges and any late fees on credit cards, make sure you pay your credit card balance in full by the due date,” says Lou Sanchez, sales and marketing manager at First Hawaiian Bank.

Create a repayment plan and budget. Automate your debt payment. Make multiple small payments throughout the month. Consider refinancing. Pay off the credit card with the highest interest rate. Pay as much as you can as fast as you can, do not settle for minimum payment due, says Marati.

It’s that time of year when people are preparing for the gift-giving season andwhile many have giving hearts it’s not always the case for the wallet.

It’s safe to say if you are not rolling in dough it may make life a little easier to become a budget master.
