The College Day was a culmination of all the activities of the past year where prizes were distributed to all the winners in all competitions. The day ended on a great note with teachers joining the students for an impromptu dance performance.
I also would like to extend a big round of congratulations to all the participants, students and their teacher coordinators who helped organize all events and fests and who are a major shareholder of all the accolades.

Katte Forum– Four discussion sessions were organized under the Forum
1. Out of Past is Built the Future
The Katte Forum in association with the NSS Unit and Zodiac (English club) organized a discussion during the 150 th Birth
Anniversary celebrations also celebrated as the National Youth Week on the topic “Out Of Past Is Built the Future”
Students came out with their opinion on their understanding of what is past and how it paves way for their future. Initially they
correlated their experiences with the topic and gradually started relating it to the national perspective. Participants discussed about
the country’s past, present, and future and what could be done for the betterment of the country’s future. It was finally concluded
that the past plays a crucial role not only in shaping the life of a person but also it plays a major role in building a nation.
2. “Is Valentine’s Day Celebration just a Commercial Hype?”
February 14th is celebrated as Valentine’s Day across the globe to commemorate the martyrdom of Saint Valentine, a Christian
saint. The session began with an understanding of what the students felt about Valentine’s Day and how commercial the day had
become. A set of students were of the opinion that one need not celebrate Valentine's Day to celebrate love exclusively on that day.
For some, relationship flourishes with love and if daily routine is a hindrance then Valentine's Day is the day for friends, family to
express love and care for each other. There was a short video presentation highlighting the significance of the day and also featuring
the commercial angle of it.
The session ended with the conclusion that it is commercially hyped by Greeting Card & Gift companies, Hotels, Restaurants’ etc
to make a quick buck and we should not forget that globalization not only provides new investment, but also foreign culture with
their commercial effects.
3. Are Extra Curricular Activities Really Beneficial in Colleges?
The audience for this session were I BCom and BBM students. Many agreed that colleges not only should focus on academics but
also on the overall and holistic development of the students, thus maintaining that extracurricular activities are important and they
should be a part of college curriculum. These activities, they continued, revealed a great deal about an individual and their interests.
4. Are Universities Creating and Contributing Real Educated Citizens To The Society?
Theoretically, an educational system operates to encourage and reward the love of learning. A College is a place to explore different
subjects and identify academic passions. However, nowadays, gaining a college degree has become a necessary step in obtaining
high paying jobs in our society instead of being rewarded for the love of learning. One of the biggest assumptions we have today is
that our universities should work to create educated citizens to the society. Keeping this general assumption in mind we decided to
ask what our students had to say.
Initially they felt that it is the responsibility of the university to develop educated citizens and also blamed the universities for not
taking necessary steps in that direction. When the audience were made to think as to what the meaning of education is and what is
the role of a college or a university, they reflected and understood that the full benefit from a university can be obtained only if the
university and society are organically linked together.
Thus, in the end they realized that it is not just the responsibility of the college or the university, but, also of the students to get
educated.
Zodiac Club 1. English Language Exhibition
A language exhibition was arranged from 26 th to 28th February. Students from 1st BBM and B.Com and 2nd BBM and B.Com show-
cased charts, spiral bound books and a couple of models. 29 exhibits were part of the event. The exhibits included write-ups on the
periods of English Literature, different eras like the Romantic and Victorian, Russian and Greek, modern writers like
Khushwant Singh, Paulo Coelho and Sudha Murthy, and modern topics like the growth of Publishing, Technical Writing,
American versus British English, communication and language and the different words that have been added to the dictionary
recently. A very tastefully decorated room and a collage of the teacher and student coordinators drew everybody’s attention. The
exhibition was inaugurated and judged by Smt. R. Madhavi, principal of MLA FGCW and she appreciated the creativity and
enthusiasm of the students.
2. English Language Quiz
A Quiz was conducted on English language to test the language skills and to encourage students to keep pace with it. 37 students
registered to write the preliminary test and it was a simple question paper with general and grammar related questions. After the
preliminary test, 10 students were selected for the next set of rounds. The first competition of the next round was on Antonyms and
Synonyms and the second competition was about different personalities and the participants had to guess them called “What do
you know about me???” The third round was on Prepositions and the fourth was One Word Substitution. The fifth round was
a) Break The Phrase and b) Test on Proverbs. The sixth round was Spell Bee and the seventh round was about checking their
Speaking Skills. At the end of all the rounds, the final three who remained were Yashaswini. N, Shravanthi. S and Megha Gupta.
3. Workshop on Prescribed Poems from the 2nd B.Com English Text Book
Zodiac, the English Club of MLA AHL in association with the English Club of MLA FGCW organized a workshop on Prescribed
Poems in the 2nd BCoM English text book. The speaker of the session was Dr. Yogananda Rao, Associate Professor and HoD of
English, St. Claret College, Bangalore. The poems discussed were The Second Coming by W.B. Yeats and Two Tramps in Mud
Time by Robert Frost.
He started with The Second Coming and he gave a brief idea about the history and the times in which the poem was written. The
poem was written in 1919 after the First World War and is a prophetic poem about the future. The poem is the poet’s interpretation
of History and his prophecy of the coming years: what’s in store for mankind and the world and how the world will be in the next
few decades. This poem paints to a gory future. The poem finds reference even in the 21st century. The NY Times quotes,
“The Second Coming is becoming the official poem of the Iraq War”.
The second poem of the session was Two Tramps in Mud Time written by Robert Frost. Frost believed in delighting the audience
initially and ending in passing wisdom. He believed that even ordinary things can do wonders. The poem is built on need and love
which are opposites. This poem was published in 1936, which was the heart of the economic depression and due to which a lot of
people were out of work and looking for jobs. Frost combines love and need and shows it poignantly in the poem in times of the
Great Depression.
Parents Counseling Session
A lecture followed by an interactive session on “Management of Stress in Adolescence” by Dr. P. S. Murthy, Psychiatrist,
Manipal Hospital was organized on 9th February.
Adolescence is an attitude which parents should learn to handle. Children these days suffer from peer pressure and identity crisis.
Parents should find ways to handle these issues. He explained what stress is, who an adolescent is and what are the different types
of stress? Doctor Murthy highlighted the various aspects like who are vulnerable adolescents? They are adolescents with famil y
history of depression, people from families with poor parenting, teen relationships etc. He further asked the audience to watch out
for physical and psychological changes like increased complaints of head ache, stomach ache, crying spells, aloofness etc, he fur-
ther explained steps to prevent stress which is through positive approach towards problem solving, good nutrition etc, relating to
the question as to how stress he started encouraging healthy and diverse friendships, supporting them in their tough times, seeking
psychiatrist assistance if needed. He concluded the session saying that a healthy relationship and mutual understanding within a
family helps the child to face any situation boldly.

oath was read out in the presence of the NEN coordinator
Mrs. Chaitali. The week long fest aimed at creating awareness
and promoting a sense of entrepreneurship among students.

students actively participated in all the events. Events like Best
Desi group, Best Business group, Quiz were conducted.

organizations like AMUL, Lijjat, and Mother Earth to get a
glimpse of how one can start from nowhere and become a
successful entrepreneur. The event was an eye opener for many
students who have the ability to become entrepreneurs.
2. A Workshop on Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is the act and art of being an entrepreneur or
one who undertakes innovations or introducing new things,
finance and business acumen in an effort to transform
innovations into economic goods. This may result in
new organizations or may be part of revitalizing
mature organizations in response to a perceived opportunity.
Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most
people won't, so that you can spend the rest of your life like
most people can't.
With the perspective of educating and encouraging students to
become entrepreneurs and be self-reliant, a joint session was
conducted by MLA-AHL and MLA-FGCW on
“Entrepreneurship” for the PG and UG students on 7th
January, 2013. The speaker for the session was Dr. Saras
Saraswathi, a renowned and respected academician and
resource person from the US.
Dr. Saras Saraswathi interacted with the students and explained
the functions of money and its importance. Through a power
point presentation, she conveyed how one could make money
and become a successful entrepreneur with new ideas and
thoughts. It was an interactive session where students learnt
how to create something from nothing.
National Youth Week: 12-19th January
“We want that education by which character is formed,
strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded and by
which one can stand on one’s own feet”. In several ways, the
life and work of Swami Vivekananda mark the historical
process of India rediscovering herself in modern times. The
teachings of Swami Vivekananda are more relevant today than
when he addressed the World Religious Conference in 1893
at Chicago when he gave the call for 'Universal Brotherhood'.
On the occasion of the 150th birth Anniversary celebrations of
Swami Vivekananda, declared as the National Youth Week, the
English club, the Management club, NSS unit and the
discussion forum of AHL jointly organized various events
during the course of the week.
The event and the week were formally inaugurated on the 12th
of January by the principal Dr. P.V. Padmaja in the presence of
all the students and faculty members. A host of events were
planned by all the forums.
The life of Vivekananda was the topic for the wall magazine
and the first year students depicted the life and teaching of
Swamiji as part of their wall magazine activity. An essay
competition was also arranged on the topic “How relevant do
you feel are the messages of Swami Vivekananda to the current
generation”? The next event was Katte, and the topic keeping
with the occasion was “Out of the Past is built the Future”. The
next event was part of Manthan, the inter class management
fest and here, as a part of the Best Manager event, the topic for
the GD round was “The Role of the Youth in Building a
Nation, especially India”. Next event were the visual
presentations by 3rd BBM students and an oral presentation by
Faiza. A quiz was also conducted on the life and personality of
Swamiji by students of 2nd BBM.
The week came to an end with a valedictory on the 19th
January 2013. The guests were from DISHA, a voluntary
organization and they organized the students into groups and
spoke to them about the values and teachings of Swamiji. It’s
was a rewarding and learning experience for all the students.

International Women’s Day 2013: Indian Woman: Realities, Challenges & Opportunities A symposium was organized on 12th March on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The symposium was an occasion of
celebration of womanhood and solidarity and it had women news makers in their respective areas as guest speakers. The chief
guest was Smt. Savithri Suresh Kumar, a noted journalist who spoke about the trials and hardships she had to endure as a rookie
journalist and as a woman more importantly. The symposium also had dignitaries such as Smt. Rukmini, Smt. Mangala
Ramachandra, Dr. Katre Shakuntala and Dr. P.V. Padmaja. In keeping with the theme, AHL felicitated Dr. Katre Shakuntala for
her achievement as a woman and an individual and for her valuable and immense contribution in the field of education. Dr. Katre
was overwhelmed with happiness and nostalgia and shared her experience of having studied in MLA school and how she was on
first name basis with her teachers revealing the love, respect and affection they had for each other. She moved everyone to tears
with her emotional speech and she said she was very grateful to her alma mater for making her the person she is today.
There were four sessions planned for the day:
The first was on “Women & Media: Stereotyping & Overcoming Barriers” and the speaker was Ms. Maya Jaydeep, an
independent filmmaker and an expert in her field. Ms. Maya Jaydeep first showed a documentary film made in Nagaland on fe-
male HIV patients and the problems they faced in their struggle to regain social status in the society. The speaker also spoke of
the problems faced by the women in media like male
dominance, an unfavorable workplace environment, lack of
training facilities, lack of security and inflexible working
hours. Ms. Maya Jaideep also talked about the role of the
youngsters in the global scenario and how they have to
work hard to find an niche for themselves. She further said
that, initiatives aimed at empowering women and pro-
moting youngsters towards positive and optimistic thinking
can lead to a brighter future for all.
The next session was on “Women and Their Rights:
Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against
Women” and the speaker was Anjali Ramanna, a noted
human rights Lawyer. The session started with an animated
video which depicted the role of CEDAW – Convention
on Elimination of Dis- crimination against Women. The
speaker stressed on various types of Discrimination against
Women. She enforced that every woman must possesses the
knowledge of various legal procedures to be followed for discrimination against women. She ended on the point that
empowerment is not confined to an individual but to the entire community.
The 3rd session was “Corporate Ladder Climb Is Slow Going for Women” and the speaker was Ms. Sadhna Dash, a HR
Consultant. She started with the results on a survey where the latest research shows that women are going sideways when it
comes to company boards. The under representation of women on corporate boards is not about a lack of supply. There are many
barriers which block a woman's entry into the boardrooms and executive offices. Ms. Sadhana Dash helped us in understanding
how difficult it is for the women to make what she wants in the corporate sector and how women can make a way to reach the
peak. She took us through the common traits in successful women in the corporate sector are they were well educated, worked at
the bottom of the ladder, has good knowledge about business and finance, continued walking balancing personal and professional
roles and responsibilities.
The last session was by Dr. Meenakshi Bharath, a Gynaecologist, Fertility Specialist & A Green Campaigner on the topic
“Breaking Barriers and Overcoming Stereotyping in the Political Arena”. She stressed on the fact that there was a need for
more women in politics and that only education and service minded people can do it and that lack of awareness in the political
field is the main deterrent to progress. Dr. Bharath has taken steps now to change or at least make an effort for change in making
her surroundings a better place and in this regard, she is planning to contest the elections. The symposium ended on a high note
after the vote of thanks.
