McMurry Track and Field is about more than just the competition on the track; it is about learning to competewell in life’s “meets”, as well. One of the ways in which theprogram has accomplished this is with its “Spiritual Coach”- Rudy Seals (at left, center). Frank discussion about priorities in life, attitudes toward others, dealing with personal issues and striving to reach God’s maximum foreach individual are all a part of the challenges Rudybrings to team devotional times.

ABOVE (CLOCKWISE): Shanita Coleman and Tiana Alexander display theirhonors from the ASC championships; Michael Johnson relaxes betweenevents; Junior Saint Preux and Paul Davis brought home some ASC “hardware”, as well; Coach Crousen holding court during the triple jump competition, and; what did the War Hawks do after winning the NCAA championship (which was held in Southern California)? Of course, they wentto Disneyland!

Welcome to War Hawk Athletics!

Thank you for your interest in athletics at McMurry University – let me tell you just a little about the importance we see itplaying in the life of student-athletes who choose to attend McMurry.

As you read this, McMurry is transitioning to intercollegiate athletic participation in NCAA Division II. The higher level ofcompetition we’ll experience in Division II is complemented by the higher academic expectations we will have of ourstudent-athletes. The opportunity to compete at a higher level and to study in a variety of challenging and relevant aca-demic majors is a distinct McMurry advantage.

To compete in first class athletic venues, and to study in new and renovated classrooms and laboratories, will opendoors for student-athletes to achieve their maximum potential. Combine first-class facilities with faculty, staff andcoaches dedicated to bringing out the best in them, student-athletes who are committed to succeed will find a welcom-ing and supportive home at McMurry University.

Make no mistake about it – competing at the NCAA Division II level is a real challenge. But life is about challenges –meeting them, overcoming them and then moving beyond them. McMurry student-athletes have an impressive historyof graduating and moving on to impressive careers. Success in meeting the challenges of competing and studying atMcMurry has prepared its graduates to move into the highest levels of corporate America.

McMurry University has a strong tradition of intercollegiate athletic competition…and success. War Hawks have wonNational Championships and have been recognized as Academic All-Americans. The history is still being written by WarHawks. Perhaps you can help us write a chapter…or two!

As a coach, Chandler has enjoyed success on the course with both the men's and women's teams. The men's team has been to the NCAA Re-gional meet all seven seasons under his direction and the men were the ASC runner-up six times.

Guerra's timeof 41:59.78 in the 10,000-meter race April 1 was a new school record and Wheeler's time of 3:59.88 broke a six-year record on April 16 in San An-tonio. In addition, Wheeler won the 2010 individual ASC title in the 1,500-meter run.

On the cross country course, Chandler saw Guerra win her first individual ASC title at the championship meet in 2011, and finish All-Region forthe second year in a row. She also was Academic All-American. In 2008, Chandler saw junior Ken Wheeler make the NCAA Division III national meet; it was the first runner under Chandler's watch that advancedbeyond regionals and the second in school history. Chandler's teammate Josh Hufstedler was the only other McMurry athlete to make nationalsin 1999. Wheeler finished 153rd out of 280 runners, the best placing in school history and he set the school's 8K record at nationals with a time of25:54.31.

Chandler was a four-year letterman in cross country as a student at McMurry before graduating in 2000. He won the ASC individual cross countrychampionship in both 1998 and 2000 and helped the men's team to an ASC Championship in 2000. 2012 IN REVIEW

The 2012 track and field seasons were banner years for both of the WarHawks’ programs…in more was than one! A young women’s team con-tinued to show its growth, while the men’s squad blossomed into theNCAA Division III Outdoor National Champions by season’s end.

One of the hallmarks of the McM program is competing against sometop-flight competition – regardless of classification – and that contin-ued in 2012. Beginning with the indoor season, McMurry’s scheduleincluded three competitions at Texas Tech, as well as one each atKansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Grinnell (which would play host tothe NCAA III indoor championship meet later in season).

McMurry Uni-versity's men'steam finishedin seventhplace at the2012 NCAA Di-vision III In-door Track andField Champi-onships. TheMcM women'ssquad was tiedfor 44th.

For McMurryUniversity, Day1 at the 2012NCAA III In-door Track andField Champi-onships pro-duced twoAll-Americansand both camein the longjump event.

In the men'scompetition, senior GavanBass picked up

his third-consecutive All-America award in the indoor long jump, fin-ishing fifth in the competition. Bass landed his best jump on his veryfirst effort of the day, with a leap of 23' 4 ¾”.

Freshman Tiana Alexander brought home the women’s team's first ac-colades of the day, finishing sixth in the women's long jump to earnher first collegiate All-America honor. Alexander's leap of 18' 5” on hersecond effort of the finals propelled her to all-American status.

McMurry's only other female athlete to qualify for the NCAA meet –sophomore Shanita Coleman – was also in the long jump event, butdid not faIr as well. Coleman's best attempt of 17' 4 ¼” was good for13th place overall and did not allow her to reach the finals.

In preliminary races, freshman Junior Saint Preux was disqualified inthe 60-meter hurdles after entering the event with nation's fifth-bestqualifying time. Saint Preux was cited for a violation when judgesruled his trail leg was outside his lane on the last three hurdles, result-ing in the DQ.

The War Hawk menstarted the Day 2 in14th place. In all, Mc-Murry brought home atotal of six All-Ameri-can awards (onewomen's and fivemen's) out of its eighttotal entries in thechampionships.

In the men's shot put, sophomore Paul Davisearned his second-consecutive indoor All-American award with afourth place finish.Davis, who entered theevent with the nation'ssecond-best qualifyingmark, hit a toss of 57'7” on his second at-tempt of the day.

In the men's 400 me-ters, senior Kevin Cun-ningham missed outon a national champi-onship by 2/1000ths ofa second to North Cen-tral College's Dan Ben-ton. Both men were given credit for a time 48.01 seconds, but thevideo put Benton at 48.004 seconds and Cunningham at 48.006 sec-onds to decide the title.

To put that into perspective, the distance between Benton and Cun-ningham was more than 150 times faster than the average blink of aneye.

Cunningham's finish in the 400 shaved better than 3/10ths of a secondoff of his school record (previously 48.45) set in the preliminaries. Itwas also Cunningham's third-consecutive all-America finish for the in-door 400 in his career as a War Hawk.

In the men's 60 meter dash, junior speedster Kenneth Turner pickedup his second-straight All-American award in the event with a thirdplace finish. Turner crossed the line at 6.82 seconds.

McMurry's 4x400 relay team turned in the War Hawks' final All-Ameri-can performance with a seventh place finish in a time of 3:20.68. Thequartet was comprised of Ben Coker, Trevon Odom, Marcus Thompsonand Cunningham.

As the team began the 2012 NCAA III outdoor campaign, the momen-tum toward a stellar season began to unfold. McM was ranked No. 3 inthe USTFCCCA pre-season poll for NCAA Division III. Within two weeksof that inaugural poll, the War Hawks would take over the No. 1 spot inthe rankings…a position they would not relinquish the balance of theseason.

Much like indoors, the War Hawks outdoor slate included top-notchcompetition. Meets at Hardin-Simmons, Trinity, Angelo State, TexasTech, Texas, Abilene Christian comprised the slate for 2012.

The first real performance salvo wasfired at the prestigious Texas Relays, however, on March 29-31.

Cunningham brought home a TexasRelays championship by winningthe 400-meter hurdles in the Col-lege Division on Saturday. Cunning-ham's time of 51.02 seconds notonly won his division, but was thefourth fastest combined among theUniversity and Invitational divisions.

In the shot put, sophomore Daviswas fifth place with a heave of 59' 3”.Davis was the only non-NCAA Divi-sion I competitor in the field.

In the 110 meter hurdles, SaintPreux finished eighth in a time of14.56. Saint Preux posted what wasthe best time in the nation for NCAAIII, a 14.36 seconds, in the prelimi-naries.

The War Hawks' 4x100 relay team was fourth in a clocking of 41.27 sec-onds.

In the 4x400 relay ran to a sixth place finish. The group timed out at3:14.82 minutes.

McMurry's men's track and field team gave another strong showing, placing fourth out of 18 teams at the Angelo State Relays on April 3-4.The War Hawks were the highest-placing NCAA Division III team in thefield.

The McM jumpers got the team off on the right foot, placing two fin-ishers in the top six in both the long and triple jumps.

In the long jump, Bass had a third place leap of 23' 3 ½”, while team-mate Thompson was close behind in fifth place with an effort of 23' 0”.In the triple, Chris Ogle was fifth with an effort of 48' 3 ¼” and DillonWilkins sixth at 47' 5 ½”.

In the shot put, sophomore Davis was second with a heave of 57' 10½”.

Saint Preux set a school record in the 110 meter hurdles for the sec-ond-consecutive week, posting a time of 14.18 seconds to win theevent at the ASU relays.

In the men's 100 meters, Turner was second in a time of 10.71 seconds, with Bass in fifth at 10.85.

Cunningham posted a clocking of 47.33in the 400 meters, good for secondplace.

From that point, records dropped likeleafs off the trees in the fall. Recogni-tions – such was ASC “Athlete of theWeek” - became commonplace. Daviswon the honor three times, Cunning-ham once and Saint Preux once for themen. Freshman shot putter DestinyKesee earned a pair of women’s AOTWhonors, while Shanita Coleman pickedup one, as well.

In April, the McMurry men’s teamcompleted a perfect “career” as mem-bers of the ASC by winning its 14th-consecutive championship. Thewomen placed second in the ASCmeet.

After the first six events on Day 1, itshaped up as a two-team race be-tween McMurry University and TexasLutheran University for the women'stitle and McM and UT-Tyler for themen.

On the men's side, the War Hawksheld a slim lead over UTT, 90-88. In thewomen's race, Texas Lutheran led Mc-Murry by 28 points, 108-80.

The War Hawks set three ASC recordson the opening day. In the women'slong jump, Shanita Coleman leapt 19'3 1/2” to lead a 1-2 War Hawk finish in

the event. Alexander was second at 19' 1 ¾”. LaKendra Matthewsplaced fourth.

As dominating as the McM women were in the long jump, it paled incomparison to what their male counterparts accomplished. McMurry'smen gave a long jump clinic, taking the Nos. 1-6 placements. Bass ledthe assault with an ASC record effort of 24' 7 ½”. He was followed – inorder – by Wilkins, Thompson, Stryker Pena and Everette Miller in a fi-nals that looked like a McMurry team portrait.

The War Hawks' other ASC record performance came in the men's shotput where Davis reeked carnage on the rest of the field. His recordheave of 59' 7 ¼” was below his personal season best, but nearly 10feet better than his closest pursuer in the ASC.

Davis was also third in the men's hammer throw.

But as the War Hawks men's team rolled toward an unprecedented14th-straight men's title, they may just look back at Day 1 and say: “Alittle child shall lead them.”

That's because in the last event of the evening – the men's 10,000 me-ters – freshman Michael Dowd gave the War Hawks an unexpected joltof adrenaline. In an event most expected would be dominated by UT-Tyler's strong distance runners (they had six of the nine competitors inthe field) – and a race that usually doesn't elicit the same fan reactionas, say, the 100 meter dash – Dowd was like a lightning bolt for Mc-Murry's squad.

When it became apparent that Dowd was going to not only get histeam some needed points, but also win the event, the entire War Hawkcontingent erupted and sprinted toward the finish line to cheer homethe first-year collegiate competitor.

Dowd not only won the event, but did so in a school record time of33:23.99 minutes. That lopped better than 55 seconds off of the previ-ous mark set by Mitchell Wolowicz in 1999.

McMurry crowned a conference champion in the women's hammerthrow when senior Felicia Rivers uncorked an effort of 145' 7”. Kesseeand Kim Martinez placed third and fourth, respectively.

Kesee was second in the women's shot put (40' 10 ¼”), with Riversplacing fourth and Lara Williams fifth.

On Day 2, McMurry University's women's track and field battled backinto contention, but in the end came up a little short and finished asthe runner-up. McMurry got to within four points of first place withthree events left. In the end, however, Texas Lutheran amassed 258points to the War Hawks' final tally of 246 ½.

Shanita Coleman earned the ASC awards for high point scorer of themeet, booking 39 points for the War Hawks. She was also named asthe “Field Event Athlete of the Year” after claiming championships inthe long jump (setting an ASC record) and the triple jump. Just forgood measure, Coleman also earned a pair of championships on thetrack by anchoring both of McM's relay teams, while also placing sec-ond in the 200 and third in the 400 meters.

Alexander – who finished second to Coleman in the long jump andwas third in the triple – was named as the ASC's “Freshman of the Year.”Alexander ran the third leg of the War Hawks' winning 4x100 relayteam, was third in the 100 dash, fifth in the 200, second in the 100 hur-dles and was fifth in the high jump, finishing second to Coleman intotal points scored for her team.

The War Hawks' winning 4x100 relay team – which had a time of 46.69seconds – was made up of Carla Burton, Kendra Coleman, Alexanderand Shanita Coleman. The 4x400 quartet ran a 3:54.02 and was com-prised of Leah Doughty, KeshIa Collins, Laura Oviedo and ShanitaColeman.

McMurry University's men's track and field team exited the stage ofthe 2012 American Southwest Conference Championships exactlyhow it debuted in 1999…and every season since: hoisting the league'schampionship trophy.

It turned out to be a dominating, win as McMurry rolled up 330 points, nearly doubling up on second place UT-Tyler's 168 points. McM headcoach Barbara Crousen's crew had champions in 12 of the meets 20events.

In all, 13 War Hawks earned ASC All-Conference designation (reservedfor event champions and/or ath-letes totaling 14 team points overthe course of the meet. Addition-ally, sophomore Davis earned the“Field Events Athlete of the Year”and Saint Preux was the “Freshmanof the Year.”

Crousen was named as the ASCmen's “Coach of the Year” for the14th time, as well. After claiming three titles on Day 1,War Hawks went right back to workon Day 2, leading UT-Tyler by a slim

two points (90-88).

In the 100 me-ters, the finishline wasadorned in theMaroon andWhite, withMcM takingthe Nos. 1-4places. Turnerwon the eventwith a time of10.52 seconds. He was fol-lowed, inorder, byOdom (10.59),Bass (10.69)and Zu-Bolton(10.76).

Odon andTurner went 1-2 in the 200meters. Odom's 21.21 clocking was fractionally better than Turner's21.22. Thompson, who was fifth in the 200, won the title in the 400meters (50.05).

Saint Preux swept both the 110 hurdles (14.12) and the 400-meter hur-dles (53.74). Teammate Willie Poindexter was second in the 400 hur-dles.

The War Hawks also swept both relays. In the 4x100, the quartet of Zu-Bolton, Odom, Bass and Turner combined for a blazing time of 40.91seconds.

The 4x400 group – Poindexter, Michael Johnson, Saint Preux andThompson – turned in an effort of 3:19.65.

In the triple jump, it was Miller popping a then season-best effort of47' 9”. Teammates Ogle (2nd), Wilkins (4th) and Bass (5th) helped McMdominate the event.

Grayson Morrow led a 1-2-3 sweep by the War Hawks in the pole vault.Marcus Nabors and Zach Hardin finished second and third, respec-tively.

With a little less than a month to go before the NCAA III champi-onships, McM tuned up with a superb local showing at the ACU Tune-

Up Meet. The War Hawk men wonthe event and the women placedthird.

At the Trinity Last Chance Meet onMay 14, Davis shattered the men’sshot put record with a heave of 62’8 ½”. Miller became the first-everMcM triple jumper to eclipse the50-foot barrier with a leap of 50’ 3¼”.

On the women’s side, Shanita Cole-man used the meet to improve onher rankings in both the long andtriple jumps heading into nation-als.

Prior to the national competition, Cunningham was announced as theSouth/Southeast Region “Track Athlete of the Year.” Crousen was se-lected as the Region’s “Men’s Coach of the Year” in voting by her peers.

As McMurry’s contingent of national qualifiers – six women’s eventsand 16 men’s events – winged its way to Claremont, Calif., for thethree-day championship meet, hopes were high. The McM men re-mained No. 1-ranked, while the women had moved up to No. 13 enter-ing the finals.

In the final tally , the McMurry women placed 26th with nine teampoints. The 4x100 relay team of Burton, Kendra Coleman, Alexanderand Shanita Coleman was third in the finals in a time of 46.75 seconds.

Shanita Coleman also picked up a sixth place finish in the women’slong jump to earn All-America status.

Meanwhile, the men’s team was like a lion laying in wait the first twodays of the championships, amassing just two team points (26 pointsbehind the leader). Those came on Bass’ seventh place finish in themen’s long jump.

But the War Hawk men knew they had lots of points still on the tablefor Saturday’s Day 3 finale.

McMurry crowned three individual and one team national championen route to the title, two alone from Cunningham. Cunningham de-fended his championship in the 400 meter hurdles (51.13), comingfrom behind at the finish. He also won the open 400 meters (46.98) for

the 12th All-America award of his career, the second-most in McMschool history.

Davis won his first NCAA title in a tough shot put competition. Davisposted what would be his winning effort – a heave of 60' 10 ½” – onhis very first attempt of the day. It was Davis' fourth All-America honoras a War Hawk.

In the 4x100 relay, McMurry's group of Zu-Bolton, Odom, Bass andTurner closed out the field in a time of 40.62.

In all, the War Hawks earned five other All-America honors besides itscollection of national titles. Saint Preux placed second in the 110 hur-dles in a clocking of 14.26 seconds.

In the 100 finals, Turner – who had battled a sore hamstring through-out the championships, placed fifth in the men's 100 meters. Turnerthen added the eight All-America award of his career – and third of theday – with an eighth place in the 200 (21.45).

Teammate Odom was third in the 200, running a time of 21.24 sec-onds.

In the triple jump, McMurry entered with three competitors and cameaway with an All-American fourth-place finish from Miller. Miller had abest mark of 48' 11 ¾ “.

The victory for the men's team was also historic for the War Hawks inthat the NCAA championships represented the University's final ath-letic competition as an NCAA Division III institution (McMurry movedto NCAA Division II beginning in the Fall of 2012).

More post-championship accolades followed the men’s title, asCrousen was named as the NCAA III Men’s National “Coach of the Year.”Cunningham earned the “Outstanding Performer Award” from thechampionshipmeet, as well.

Cunninghamcapped his il-lustrious Mc-Murry careerby also beingnamed as theASC Male “Ath-lete of theYear.”

Regarding student-athlete well-being, the FAR works with in-

stitutional offices to ensure that student-athletes are healthy

and succeeding academically. The FAR works with the Stu-

dent-Athlete Affairs Director and Athletic Academic Resources

Coordinator (AARC) to help athletes prepare for academic

success & life after college. The FAR also nominates out-

standing student-athletes for NCAA & conference awards.

Emily Germany (center) - a former student-athlete at McMurry

- serves as the school’s Athletic Academic Resources Coordi-

nator. She is the contact, resource, and mentor to all student-

athletes in regards to their academics. Some of the services

include, but are not limited to:

• Monitoring academic success utilizing a time management

system, student-athlete progress reports, and midterm reports.

• Creating improved plans when student-athlete fails quizzes,

tests, or do poorly on papers, progress reports, and mid-term

reports.

• Assisting student-athletes with utilizing time management

skills and a variety of study strategies.

• Assisting with locating appropriate offices on campus

that manage class registration, career services, financial

aid, student payment plans, work-study, drop/add forms,

change major forms, etc.

Reverend Bill Libby (right), a former coach and director of

athletics at McMurry, is the Student-Athlete Affairs Direc-

tor and responsible for fostering growth in the “life skills”

of the young men and women who don the War Hawk

colors.

Rev. Libby works with individuals on such important as-

pects of college life as time management, interpersonal

relationships and utilizing campus resources, to name a

few. The goal is to have these same techniques being

practiced in college, be put to use later in life.

McMurry University’s student-athletes have tremendous resources

available to them to help ensure not only their academic success,

but to help prepare them for achievement in the “real world” after

graduation, as well.

Under the leadership of Dr. Joel Brant (left), McM’s Faculty Athlet-

ics Representative, a three-person team works to make sure that

each student-athlete has all the “tools” needed to reach their maxi-

mum potential.

In September of 2009 President John Russell appointed Dr. Brant

to serve as Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR). The FAR is a

position required by the NCAA and generally represents the institu-

tion to the NCAA (in conjunction with the President & AD). The

FAR position has two main areas of responsibility: academic in-

tegrity and student-athlete well-being.

In the realm of academic integrity, the FAR serves as an independ-

ent voice in the athletics administration. The FAR works with the

AD and Compliance Coordinator to ensure that NCAA rules are

being adhered to. The FAR works with the President & AD to en-

sure that all athletic policies conform to or support the institution’s

mission.

TRACK & FIELD FACILITIES

Wilford Moore Stadium, originally opened in 1937, was re-named in 2007 after one of themost successful football coaches in McMurry history. The Stadium is home to not only thetrack team, but also McM’s football team.

After pressure from the NCAA led to McMurry’s decision to drop its “Indians” nickname in2006, then Indian Stadium needed a new name, as well. Moore was the deserving choice forthe namesake of the football and track facility.

Moore coached McMurry for several years but was the head football coach from 1947-54when he led the Indians to a 48-25-5 record, guided the program to four conference champi-onships and was named the Texas Conference “Coach of the Year” in 1948, 1949 and 1953.His winning percentage of .610 is the highest among all the head coaches in McMurry his-tory with a minimum of 20 victories.

Moore’s stadium dedication ceremony took place in May of 2007 less than a year after theuniversity added a brand new track surface and new artificial turf in a $1.6 million project tooverhaul the surfaces.

McMurry successful track and field program also calls Moore Stadium home. The track pro-gram boasted greats like the late Bill Miller and 17-time all-American Hann Ollison. Ollisonhelped lead McMurry University to the first team national championship in school history in2008 by winning the NCAA Division III Outdoor crown.

In the spring of 2011, McMurry debuted the Bobby Lee Carter Throws Complex to the east ofWilford Moore Stadium. There, the War Hawks will have a hammer and discus throws area.

The War Hawk men brought home another NCAA III outdoor track championship in 2012 -behind the efforts of senior “Outstanding Performer” Kevin Cunningham’s pair of titles in the400 and 400 hurdles - adding another title for the Moore Stadium occupants.

Following the school’s most accomplished football season and first-ever NCAA playoff berthin 2011, a $2.2 million renovation that included a new press box and private suites, conces-sion area, restrooms, events deck, elevator, entry concourse and chair-back stadium seatingwas completed in the fall of 2012 and the facility re-dedicated that September.

Although the site once held 4,500 people, reduced seating now has the stadium’s capacity at3,550 fan-friendly seats. The facility plays north and south for football with home seating onthe west side. The stadium is located on campus just south of South 14th Street on RossStreet, with ample parking located both adjacent to the stadium and in surrounding campuslots.

SAYING GOOD-BYE...

During the 2012 season, McMurry University’s track and field had two very important members of its family – Bobby Lee Carter and Joe Crousen- clear life’s final hurdle in the race to return home to be with the Heavenly Father. Both of these men gave of himself – each in his own way – toensure that War Hawk Track and Field reached the highest pinnacle of success. Although they are physically gone, the spirit in which they livedlife - and believed in the mission of McMurry Track and Field - will forever be present in the War Hawks’ program.

BOBBY LEE CARTER

Bobby Lee Carter was a 1952 graduate of McMurry University and aformer high school track coach. He competed as a member of Mc-Murry's sprint relay team from 1949-52 and was an NCAA TrackHonor Roll selection during his time as a McMurry athlete. He wasinducted into the school's Hall of Honor in 1999 and was the pri-mary donor for the War Hawks’ throws facility which carries hisname.

“Bobby was one of my best supporters since I've been here,” saidMcM head coach Barbara Crousen, who brought back track & fieldto McMurry in 1998. “When I was hired he had concerns about awoman coaching the men's track team and even went to the presi-dent to voice those concerns.

“But one day, early on, he sat in the stands and watched how I coached the team. After that, heand I became good friends. He was one of those people who really built up my confidence as acoach.”

Carter's support of Crousen came to fruition in 2008 when she brought home the first teamnational championship in school history, as McMurry claimed the NCAA III Outdoor Track &Field crown. Crousen added a second title in May of 2012, just a few months before Carterpassed away (in August).

Though Carter was a sprinter, Crousen said she simply conveyed the program's need for athrowing venue to Carter and he agreed, spearheading the drive to fund the venue.

“He just wanted to do something to help the track program, and that was huge,” recountedCrousen. “He was always one of our biggest supporters, so I'm glad that our track throws facil-ity carries his name.”

JOE CROUSEN

Joe Crousen, the late husband of head coach Barbara Crousen, was the most ardent supporter of not just McMurryTrack and Field, but of his wife, as well. True to his own DNA as a coach, even as his own health declined, he insistedthat Barbara remain focused on leading the War Hawks’ team to its eventual NCAA Division III men’s outdoor nationalchampionship in 2012.

In the end, when he was too sick to attend meets he would have normally never missed – like McM’s record 14th-straight ASC men’s championship – he insisted on watching all the videos from each event and lending his observa-tions. On the first day of the NCAA championships, Joe had to be readmitted to the hospital and – although Barbaraconsidered jetting back from California to be by his side – he wouldn’t hear of it. As he put it, she owed it to the teamto lead them to the NCAA championship they deserved.

A month later -after the War Hawks had brought home the NCAA title for “Papa Joe” to enjoy - he was called home.

Joe Crousen was inducted into the Big Country Hall of Fame in its Class of 2012. Crousen joined the McMurry footballstaff as a defensive coordinator under then-head coach Steve Keenum and, upon Keenum's departure, took over the head coaching reins for the2005 and 2006 seasons.

His first head-coaching job was at Athens (guiding the Hornets to a the 1971 district championship title) followed by a stint as head coach at Car-rollton Turner, leading the Lions to their only 10-0 season in 1977. Crousen was reunited with his former prep coach, Emory Bellard, joining thestaff at Mississippi State as an offensive line coach and kicking coordinator in 1978.

He guided Ranger Junior College's program for seven seasons. He then became the defensive coordinator at Cooper High School and helped theCougars reach the 1996 state finals.

As for his own playing career, Crousen earned all-state honors at guard and linebacker on Breckenridge High School's 1958 Class 3A statechamps. He went on to play his college football at Sul Ross State.

As the old saying goes: “Tothe victors go the spoils.”

After winning the 2012NCAA Division III Men’s Outdoor Track and FieldNational Championship, theWar Hawks had plenty of reminders around the city ofAbilene to show the pridethe community had in theirchampions!

The reign of excellence forthe McMurry track and =eldprogram is one that showsevery sign of continuing togrow by leaps and bounds!

Of course, they wentto Disneyland!
