Katy ISD is sharing information about the state, district, and your child's campus as part of
the state legislative requirements. Copies of the 2014-15 School Report Cards for the state,
district, and campus are available for your review in the front office of our school or can be
accessed online at

An optional notification letter in English and Spanish is available if you choose to use this
method of communicating. This is not a requirement, and it is not necessary to send a paper
copy of the School Report Card home with students. However, if a parent or guardian re-
quests a paper copy, one must be provided.

Social Media Permission Katy ISD may use social media platforms to provide immediate information about upcoming events, show learning in class-
rooms, provide strategies for learning, highlight student work, connect parents to student learning, and to brand our
schools.
The District form on the following page has been designed to allow parents to grant permission for those students who cur-
rently have an “A” Directory Information code. The “A” directory information code definition is: “My student’s directory infor-
mation is public information and may be released to the public. It may be released to anyone making a public information
request and may appear in school directories, other school publications, photographs, yearbooks, in a program for a perfor-
mance (such as athletics, band, choir, etc.), on a District or campus Web page, and in news releases.”
Please indicate whether or not you grant permission for your student to be included in social media platforms on the district
form by January 15, 2016. Failure to return the form with the “yes” box checked will be considered denial of consent for
inclusion in social media.

Classroom Library Book Drive
The Bobcat Library is asking for your help in donating gently used paper-
back and hardback books to help build our classroom libraries. Students
can read these books during DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) as well as
after they have completed their schoolwork. To accommodate our stu-
dents’ diverse reading levels, we will be accepting books that are appropri-
ate for grades 3-8. There will be two drop-off locations—one in the front of-
fice and the other in the library. If you have any questions, please contact
Mrs. Alidon in the library. Thank you in advance for your support!
Read It Forward
This year’s Read It Forward (RIF) book is The Great Greene Heist by Varian Johnson, one of the 2015 Texas Lone
Star reading books. If you are not familiar with this reading program, here is the scoop:
One hundred paperback copies of our RIF book will be placed randomly around school. Last week Mrs. Alidon met
with the reading classes to launch the program and gave away copies for each class. The remaining copies were
“dropped” or placed in various spots on campus. Some were in the cafeteria, hallway, office, and even some
classrooms. If students find a RIF book, they can pick it up, give it a read, and forward it to the next person to en-
joy! Not your thing? Then simply find someone to pass the book to who will enjoy reading it. These are not library
books, so please do not return them to the library! After students finish reading the book, they can sign the inside
front cover, forward it on the next person to read the story, and come to the library to sign an “I read the RIF
book” emblem. The library staff will add their name to a roster of students who will have the opportunity to meet
the author, who will be visiting our school on Tuesday, February 23, in the library (new date). This is an incredible
opportunity for our students!
Please note that students do not have to read a copy of the RIF book that they find around the school. If some stu-
dents can’t find a copy lying around campus, they can check out a copy from our school library or the public li-
brary. If you have any questions, please contact the school librarian Mrs. Alidon.
Having high expectations can be a great way to motivate your child—but only if your child believes she can actually
meet them. When setting goals, ask your child to answer these three questions for each of her classes:
“What do I want to achieve in this class next grading period?” This can be a higher grade, or another achievement, such
as turning in all homework on time.
“What is my plan for achieving it?” She could make a study chart and follow it. Or organize her binder, so that homework
gets home and then back to school.
“How will I avoid distractions that may conflict with my goals?” She could turn off her phone during study hours. Or de-
cide she will not check social media while she’s studying.
Have her write down her expectations and goals and post the list where you can both see it. Check it frequently to
see how things are going, and make changes as needed.

Here are the guidelines:
*Students can record the pages in the book they are currently reading and all future books they
read this school year. The books they have read during the 1st six weeks will not be counted.
* When a student have finished reading a book, they will ask their advisory teacher to initial their
reading log.
*When a student reaches a reading goal, he can go to the library to pick up his prize.
* Extra reading logs will be in the ELA teachers' classrooms, the library, & Canvas.

Gifted and Talented General Screening
The window for parent referral of junior high students wishing to be screened for GT placement for the 2016-2017 school year will open on November 9, 2015. Parent Checklists will be available for pick up from the counselor’s office and must be returned by 2:30 p.m. January 13, 2016. The deadline is firm. Any stu-dent who has not been screened for G/T within this school year may be referred by completing and return-ing the Parent Checklist.
Students may be screened for GT placement in any of the following subject areas:
English/Language Arts
Mathematics
Science
Social Studies
Questions regarding G/T screening may be directed through the counseling office or to Donna McCarthy, campus G/T facilitator, at [email protected].
Additional G/T Screening for Students Already Identified Current G/T students who are not being served in all four content areas (English Language Arts, Math, Sci-ence, and/or Social Studies) may request GT screening for additional courses. Students requesting addi-tional screening should pick up the “Request for Additional Screening” form from the counseling office. These forms will be due to the counselor’s office by 2:30 p.m. January 13, 2016. The deadline is firm.

Student iPad Checkout Information
Katy ISD is excited to provide the opportunity for our students to take home a digital device for learning.
A student can check out an iPad to use for a school assignment for a one week period, excluding the
Winter and Spring Breaks. The student’s parent or legal guardian must first meet with the assistant prin-
cipal to review the KISD Student/Parent Equipment Use Agreement and sign it along with the student.
This document will be kept on file for the current school year. The student will be instructed on proper
use and care of the borrowed equipment. Please call the school at 281-237-8000 to set up an appoint-
ment.
Katy ISD is proud to introduce the Technology Information for Parents site. This site in-
cludes video tutorials on technology that students utilize everyday including MyKaty
Cloud and Canvas.
