February has been a month of planning for theCIS staff and students at McKean!
The Student Leaders have been busy preparing weekly lessons fthe 9th graders during Freshman Advisory. This months themesincluded goal setting and accomplishments, integrity, stereotypeand prejudice, and cliques and peer pressure. Next month willfocus on social networking, including a presentation from AT&Tabout texting and driving.
In addition, the Student Leaders have continued their Semester Service projects as they have identifiedseveral organizations to volunteer at inthe spring; they have also begunplanning and preparing for the McKeanBlood Drive in March; are continuing towork with Ms. Dorsey (HealthcorpsCoordinator) weekly on health andwellness and working in committees toexpand the food closet; as well aspreparing for their Jefferson Awards
presentation for the competition inMarch. Several students participatedin the Polar Bear Plunge to benefit Special Olympics on February6th.

Community Partner Spotlight:McKean Mentors
Thanks to the tireless efforts of McKean Project Coordinator, Trish RagCIS at McKean is proud to announce the addition of two new mentors the program this month! Caroline Hale, a junior at the University ofDelaware, completed a 50 hour internship with CIS at McKean HS in th
fall. She enjoyed her experience so much that she decided to come bthis spring to mentor two students whom she connected with during htime here. Kevin Cencula, a member of the community who works fDuPont, contacted the school with an interest in mentoring a malestudent athlete. Trish was happy to pair him with one of our young mstudents.
In addition to Caroline and Kevin, JanineSorbello from the Delaware StateChamber of Commerce, Margot Price fromConnecting Generations, Amanda Bregerand Michelle Morton (both teachers at
McKean) have helped grow our mentoringprogram from zero last year to sixmentors and eight students this year!!
Thank you so much for your continuedtime, support, and commitment to ourstudents!
Additionally, Ariel Saypol and Kelly Cassidy both joined the CIS team tspring as interns from the University of Delaware. Ariel, a senior, whostudying Human Services with a concentration in School Counseling, wbe completing a 400 hour internship focusing on meeting individually
with students to help improve their grades a
attendance. Kelly Cassidy, a junior, is alsostudying Human Services, but with aconcentration in Drug and Alcohol CounselinShe will complete a 50 hour internship assiststaff and students with various needs.
McKean Student Leaders have followed suiteseven students continue to mentor studentsLinden Hill Elementary weekly after-school.

tutoring and academics, its about spending time with a youngperson in need of a good role model and getting them involved
Spring On Track
On Track 1 & 3 started in February wit28 students from William Penn &McKean. Juniors began On Track 1 whifocuses on life skills, post-secondaryexploration, leadership development adecision making skills. Meanwhile,seniors began On Track 3 which is acourse that gives students theopportunity to learn about financial aidcounseling, SEED and scholarship
information, and the importance of acollege education. All studentsparticipated in group activities, buildincritical thinking skills and practicingcollege level coursework. The studentsfinal course will culminate on March 22with a celebration congratulating theirdedication. All students will earn acollege credit upon completion. All
students will take the College Placement Test for Del Tech, and seniorwill be able to matriculate directly into DTCC upon high schoolgraduation.
