Destination Imagination (DI) at McKinley Thatcher
What is Destination Imagination? Destination Imagination prepares Colorado’s kids to be the innovators of the future by combining the arts, sciences, and technology with creativity, teamwork and problem solving in a fun and competitive atmosphere. Join us in our mission to engage Colorado’s students, as they become the innovators of the future. Destination Imagination (DI) combines STEM, 21st Century skills, and inquiry-based learning with teamwork and fun. DI is a volunteer-led, cause-based nonprofit that inspires and equips students to become the next generation of leaders. Check out this website for more information. http://dpsdi.weebly.com/
How does DI work? School-aged children work in teams from 2 to 7 members to solve long-term challenges and practice Instant Challenges. The most important thing to remember is that this program is kid based! There is absolutely no outside help allowed. Team managers are there to supervise, provide resources and teach skills, teamwork and problem solving skills. The Team Members generate the ideas, execute the ideas, and plan a performance showcasing their ideas.
Team Challenges that the team can choose from are: (consult the website for detailed explanations of each challenge http://dpsdi.weebly.com/) Technical, Scientific, Fine Arts, Improvisational, Structural, and Service Learning. Rising Stars is our non-competitive early learning challenge for students in K-2.
PTA has agreed to pay the fee to register any teams, but challenges will require the purchasing of materials. Most teams spend $250 on materials for their challenge. We will need at least one team manager for each team. The team meetings will occur in the evening or on the weekend at our homes. Once a team is formed we will find an agreed upon meeting day, time, and location.
Students who sign up must be available all day on March 18th for the regional competition where we will compete against other DPS schools.
Most teams meet for 1 hour a week. We will start regular practices in January immediately following winter break, but we will meet 2-4 times before winter break to select our challenge and get to know each other. Team meetings will last 1 hour and take place weekly. The week before the competition we may meet more frequently.
To sign up please complete the bottom portion of this form and return it to your child’s teacher. We would like to form and register all teams on November 1st.
Teachers, please put this form in the PTA mailbox.
