Happy Spring??? A Note from Donalee

It may not feel like spring yet, but it is certainly here! I am sure that you are busy in your classrooms pacing out the rest of the year to make sure you get everything in as you work around test-ing, spring programs and spring fever! Make sure that you take care of yourselves as I know the hearts of teachers well and the last person that many of you think of taking care of is yourself!

Thirteen area teachers attended the Breakout Box Game Night on Wednesday, March 30. The group solved an activity called “Dr. Johnson’s Lab” by going through steps to save the world from destruc-tion by finding the anti-virus that was stolen by the evil Dr. The teachers divided into two groups and worked together to solve the problem. The workshop included time to investigate several sites for ideas and tips on using the Breakout Box in the classroom. Teachers also shared their experienc-es with using the Breakout Box in the classroom. A suggestion was made to develop a Blog or Wiki Site on which to share ideas about the Breakout Box as well as other ideas from area teacher’s classrooms.

Teachers from Finley-Sharon, Hatton, Northwood, MPCG, Hope-Page, and Hillsboro participated in the event and received a stipend of $50 for attending the event. Several of the teachers went back

to their schools and presented this innovative way of using Problem Based Learning in the classroom!

The service and learning group of MSU students, professors, and Teacher Center Teacher Trip winner Benjamin Strand, accom-

panied by his wife Shelby Strand, spent Spring Break volunteering at a Soup Kitchen, Woodlawn African American Cemetary, a

Salvation Army distribution center, a Nursing Home, Day Care, and at the Riverdale Elementary in Courtland, Va as well as finding

some time for sight seeing in our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. including a visit to ND Senator John Hoeven.

Benjamin, a third grade teacher at Hillsboro Elementary, communicated with his class back home in Hillsboro while in a 4th grade

classroom in Courland as well as traveling in Washington D.C. He used Skype, Face-time, and Twitter to communicate and even

played the math game SKUNK with both classrooms at the same time! Whole Brain Learning was observed by Shelby Strand and

she in turn is bringing it back into her classroom in Hillsboro.

Thank you to all who participated in the contest, the Hillsboro Elementary Administration for encouraging these professionals, and

the MSU Education Department for arranging the trip!

Look for sites listed in the Idea sec-tion of this newsletter to help you enhance your instruction!

MSU Multi-Cultural Club Visiting Musicians

Josue Trelles and Luis Munoz, currently living in Sweden, but originally from Chili

and Peru, spent the week of April 4-8 at MSU combining culture, storytelling, and of course music on the campus of MSU as well as slipping in a concert for the Hills-boro Elementary students. The pair used various wind instruments to entertain and inform their audiences. The Teacher Center supported the musicians in their travels.

National Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Conference

The Teacher Center also supported a group of MSU pre-service teachers as they attended a conference for the Na-tional Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. This is a great experience for our MSU Students that are pursuing edu-cation!
