California School Parent Survey, 2018-2019

Arena Elementary Your school needs you to complete this online survey to learn more about your opinions about it. This survey is an opportunity to communicate your perceptions about your child’s school. This letter explains the survey and, at the bottom of the page, provides your login, password and access instructions. If you have any questions about this survey, contact Arena Elementary School front office at 707 882-2131.

You will have access to this online survey beginning May 2019. The purpose of this survey is to obtain parent perceptions about the school.

Your participation is voluntary. It is also very important. The information you provide will help guide district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, and improve student achievement.

• This is an anonymous survey. It is designed so that no one can be identified from the data. You do not have to respond to any questions that you feel could be used to identify you. Simply skip any such questions.

• All questions apply to this school only. • The results are for the use of your district. The California Department of Education and WestEd will

preserve data confidentiality and refer any data requests to the district.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCESSING THE SURVEY

If you have more than one child at this school, you will only need to complete one survey for this school. Please fill out just one survey about the school using your oldest child as a reference. Access the survey using the following URL:

surveys.wested.org/csps/EY929RW

Into the Wild: A Cross-Age, Integrated Arts Poetry Writing & Bookmaking Project This year’s integrated arts poetry writing and bookmaking project had an incredible start in Mr. Jimerson’s 4th grade class in February. The 4th graders researched and wrote remarkable tribute poems for wild animals near and far which then served as inspiration for the impressive mini-block prints and dos á dos (or back-to-back) books they created. The 4th graders have made 3 Art Buddy visits to help Mrs. Gaona’s 1st grade students write their poems and make their books. Also, they have written and transcribed amazing odes for wild animals near and far and started to make beautiful decorative paste papers inspired by their animals which will be used for their cover collages—construction of the 1st grade slat accordion books will soon be underway with the help of the 4th grade Art Buddies. Don’t miss this year’s exhibit of all the beautiful poem books and always inspiring poetry presentations by the 1st and 4th graders at the school’s Open House on Thursday, May 23rd! Appreciation and gratitude to our project’s continued generous funders—Arena Boosters Club, Arena Union Elementary School Site Council, Good Buy Clothes, Gualala Rotary Club, Mendocino County Office of Education Young Authors’ Fair Project and the Soroptimist International of Mendocino-Sonoma Coast!

Blair Day, Friday, June 7th Mr. Jasper W. Blair was a Civil War veteran who lived close to Arena Elementary in the early 1900s. Children on their way to school each morning would wave hello to him as he sat on his porch and he acknowledged with a “Good morning” and waved back. This simple act of salutation and kindness from the children would not be forgotten. In Mr. Blair’s will in 1926 provided for a trust for the children of the Arena Elementary School. He wanted a day every year to be set aside as Blair Day; and on this day the children were to play and have ice cream. Although the fund was depleted long ago, the school continues to honor and enjoy the day with a school-wide picnic at Bower Park for our primary grades and a day at KOA- Manchester or the beach for our middle school students. In the month of May, a few students from middle school tidy Mr. Blair’s grave and lay branches of cypress on it in remembrance and gratitude. Blair Day information will be sent home with students sometime in May. If you would like to be a volunteer on Blair Day, please contact your child’s teacher and ask about how you can help on this field day.
