The building will be delivered in June. This announcement was made at the May 18 Gowrie City Council meeting. They are still at least $123,000 short in fundrais- ing, not including the kitchen and board room. It was suggested they may send out a letter to members of the community requesting donations. Additionally, it was of- fered that the original fire department building could be sold for $25-30K. Developing land Resident Denny Mc Cubbin inquired whether he could develop land within the Liberty Addition. Many landowners have investment in this addition, including Mc Cubbin’s great aunt. It was explained by the council that the city has an easement on this area in case a new street was required in future years. When asked if the city would ever consider Gowrie Fire Dept. makes $60,000 down payment on new fire building City Clerk position could be full time. . . repealing an easement, Peterson and Redman offered a definite, “no!” Additionally, the council advised anyone considering adding a building to the land, to consider they may be asked to remove it later. Ash tree removal Finally, discussion centered upon several Ash trees north of the pool. Though he was not in attendance at this meeting, Darrell Mishke, suggested these trees are diseased and non-thriving, and should be removed. It was reported that approximately 75 Ash trees within the community are in need of removal. The council will take this into consideration. City Clerk position A replacement for the position of city clerk was discussed, and it was announced the position has been of- fered to Danielle Clancy. “The question is should this be part time or full time?” inquired Mayor Stokesbary. “I don’t think we can ultimately keep someone if the position isn’t full time,” offered Peterson. By Glenn Schreiber One of the oldest businesses in Webster Coun- ty is celebrating an historic achievement in early June. Engquist Lumber, Harcourt, will celebrate its 125th an- niversary Tuesday, June 2. The incredible milestone is being achieved by owners Scott and Diane Engquist who are fourth genera- tion owners of the family owned business. “We are a little unique in that our business has had continuous family ownership throughout those 125 years,” said Scott. “We are proud that our family, through good and lean years, has managed to successfully own and operate this business.” Engquist Lumber is also one of the very oldest lumber stores in the entire state of Iowa. Scott noted that a few lumber stores are older, but they don’t necessarily have continuous ownership by one family. Brief Engquist Lumber history Scott Engquist’s great-grandfather Olaf started Engquist Lumber in June of 1890. “He recognized a need for a building supplier in this area,” said Scott. Olaf’s son Lawrence purchased the business in 1917 and in 1922 the business was moved to its current location. Scott’s father Robert purchased the business in 1949. He was called to serve in the Korean War in the early 1950s while his family continued the business op- eration. On June 1, 1981 Scott Engquist purchased the business from his parents, becoming the fourth genera- tion owner. Changes made Over the years many changes have been made. Boxholm vandalism... Received the 5-20-15 Dayton Review the day after

I sent the column for the 5-27-15 edition and staring at me on the front page was the headline Vandalism at Boxholm School. That not only was saddening news but a bit angering as well. One wonders what people think when doing such things. What was to be gained? Was it a lark for the perpetrators? Apparently the parties responsible do not have respect or fondness for such edifices as we

of the old school who regard that building as a special place where we and those before and after us received ba-sic education to prepare us for life. All I can say to those people is shame, shame, shame.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF STORM WATER DISCHARGE The Gowrie City Council met the evening of May 18th to discuss issues brought forth by the council and also addressed concerns from the community at large. The Parks Board advised there have been no bids on a garage offered for sale. A second option is to see if someone would like to take on the property for free. It was announced that the soccer season is complete, and Little League will begin soon. Finally, the board considered locations that might be utilized by a traveling circus. Concerns were raised that if there is recent or current rainfall, Brockett Park would not make a suitable site for the circus. Additionally, Gowries City Park may not be acceptable either if the grass is rain soaked. Councilperson Jeff Peterson questioned if the circus could be located on black top. It was decided this question required further investigation. Police Chief Bruce Mc Cormack reported that several yards in Gowrie are in need of mowing. Citations have been issued, but it was noted that in many cases, the obligation to mow often becomes the citys concern. Theres no incentive to mow if theres not a fine, suggested councilperson Gayle Redman. Mc Cormack agreed, but offered, A lot of these people are out of state. It was suggested that perhaps a list of mowing services offered in the community could be included with the citation, but it was noted this has been tried before without success. The Library Board informed the council that a new library director has been hired to replace Shelley Nelson. Elissa Mobley, a current assistant in the city clerks office, assumed responsibility for the library last week. Her rate of pay is set at $11.50 per hour. The city council voted to approve a pay raise of 50 cents per hour for library assistant, Gail Mc Cloud. Crystal Wilks announced her departure from the board. The library board has accepted her resignation with regret and wishes to thank her for her years of service. The library board raised the issue of cutting back the number of board members from 7 to 5. A vote of whether the city should approve this change will likely appear on the fall ballot. Finally, it was noted that the library is leaking rain water in several places, such as the windows and the entryway. It is hoped that a way to mediate the leakage may be devised before books or other materials of the library are damaged. The Pool Board has reported that a number of cracks and other structural issues continue to plague the pool. For example, a grate on the floor of the deep end is not flush with the floor of the pool. It was noted that a diver may be injured if they collide with the grate as is it sticking up at an odd angle. The Golf Board held their first meeting last week. It was decided they only approve the leasing of the clubhouse to an interested individual(s). Mayor Dave Stokesbary informed the council he has heard from three parties interested in leasing the clubhouse. It was suggested a lease for the clubhouse may run somewhere between $400 and $500 per month. I want the right person to be specific regarding the menu, offered Stokesbary. If they want to operate in this location, they must sell the concept of their restaurant to the community. For example, Stokesbary noted an interested party wanted to offer Mexican cuisine, but has also offered to serve an American-style menu as well. Finally, it was noted that an inventory of Muligans should be attempted before June 1st. It was suggested that the inventory may be available to a new lessee based on a negotiable bid. In other proceedings, Pastor Jon Rollefson and his wife, of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Callendar, inquired if the Gowrie Community Center may be used for contemporary worship services every other Saturday night. They explained that Gowrie is centrally located for many potential parishoners. They advised they would not utilize the kitchen and that any tables or chairs moved during the service would be returned to original locations. The city council approved this request, but suggested they speak with Pastor Davis of Zion Lutheran to discuss the arrangement as his congregation also participates in Saturday services. It was acceptable to Pastor Rolefson that if the community center is occupied by an interested party paying rent for the building, he will not hold services on

that evening. Discussion continued on the purchase of rocks to improve parking for semis. Additionally, it was noted that a pavement doctor service has been utilized by the Utilities department to seal cracks in the pavement. The city originally approved a $2,000 budget to test out this service. Well consider doing more if it works, offered councilmember Jeff Peterson. Next, community member Dick Johnson raised concerns regarding the accessibility of the citys sidewalks and curb cut-ins. I actually have to drive one block to attend church services, explained Johnson. Johnson offered literature regarding ADA requirements for accessible sidewalks and cut-ins to the council. The council advised they would take the issue into consideration. A replacement for the position of city clerk was discussed, and it was announced the position has been offered to Danielle Clancy. The question is should this be part time or full time? inquired Mayor Stokesbary. I dont think we can ultimately keep someone if the position isnt full time, offered Peterson. The Fire Department announced a $60,000 down payment has been made on the new building. The building will be delivered in June. They are still at least $123,000 short in fundraising, not including the kitchen and board room. It was suggested they may send out a letter to members of the community requesting donations. Additionally, it was offered that the original fire department building could be sold for $25-30K. Resident Denny Mc Cubbin inquired whether he could develop land within the Liberty Addition. Many landowners have investment in this addition, including Mc Cubbins great aunt. It was explained by the council that the city has an easement on this area in case a new street was required in future years. When asked if the city would ever consider repealing an easement, Peterson and Redman offered a definite, no! Additionally, the council advised anyone considering adding a building to the land, to consider they may be asked to remove it later. Finally, discussion centered upon several Ash trees north of the pool. Though he was not in attendance at this meeting, Darrell Mishke, suggested these trees are diseased and non-thriving, and should be removed. It was reported that approximately 75 Ash trees within the community are in need of removal. The council will take this into consideration.
