GDC Membership crosses the Atlantic to Africa The Gowrie Development Commission member- ships has gone global! With a simple trip to the post office to retrieve the mail for the Gowrie Development Commission (GDC) came an interesting membership form and letter. While the membership form and letter looked to be just like all the others, it wasn't until they started to read the letter that they realized this was not just an ordinary letter. The post mark on the envelope was from Mississippi, but the person writing the letter to join the GDC is from where else, Gowrie............Ghana! George Awuni is currently getting his post-doctor- al associate at Mississippi State University. How did George find out about Gowrie, IA? When George decided to build his Facebook page in 2010 he put in his home- town of Gowrie, and Gowrie, IA showed up. So, he did a Google search and found the GDC. Over the years he nursed the idea to communicate but never had the cour- age to pursue it. The idea kept pushing him and he said “I had no option than to give up to my inner calling.” So, he then went back to the GDC's website and printed out the membership form, wrote a letter and sent it off to see what might come of his 'inner calling'. The GDC thought his idea of starting a Sister-City Relationship with Gowrie, Ghana, which is in the upper East region of Ghana, West Africa would be an exciting opportunity. We emailed George, told him a little about our town of Gowrie, asked if we could share his letter and information with the local newspaper, our City Council, SV fifth graders flag essay winners announced The United States flag is often thought of as a sym- bol of our nation’s courage, strength, and unity. To ensure it remains an enduring symbol of American greatness, the American Legion of Iowa has an established essay con- test for fifth grade students. This year the Southeast Valley fifth graders partici- pated in the Legion’s “What the Flag Means to Me” es- say contest. Jim Peterson provided an educational CD and booklet which was used in class prior to writing the essays. Members of the Gowrie Legion Post 431 judged all essays and announced the top three winners at this spring’s middle school music concert. Third place went American Flag By Caden Larson The American flag, it’s like it talks to you. It’s telling you its story. It’s like a new pair of shoes, and I am proud to have them. When we watched a video about this to get some ideas in our head, the teachers asked if anyone had Caden Larson received the first place award from the Gowrie Legion Post 431. American Flag Essay continued on page 2... to Sadie Nelsen, daughter of Wendy Nelsen, Connie & Brad Strain, and Farin Hoare. Aaron Graves, son of Amber & Mark Graves, won second place honors. This year’s top essay was written by Caden Larson, son of Peggy & Scott Larson; his essay was sent on to the next level of judging. The fifth-graders are thankful to the local Legion Posts for providing this citizenship opportunity and for the certificates and monetary gifts donated to the top three essay winners. 109 Locksley Way, Apt 109Starkville, MS 39759Dear President, I am originally from Ghana (West African) and currently a post-doctoral associate at Mississippi State University, MS. I am sending this letter to join the Gowrie Development Commission (GDC) as an individual member for 2 reasons: 1. I come froma village on-incidentally called Gowrie in the Upper East Region of Ghana, West Africa. 2. I think we can cooperate in a sister-City relationship. This could enable the two cities share cultures and development. Enclosed is my individual membership contribution. I do hope to hear favorably from you all.Thank you,Yours faithfully,George Awunle-mail:[email protected]
