FIRE SAFETY—DRYER VENTSAccording to the NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION(NFPA), 2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each yearand cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 millionin property loss. FAILURE TO CLEAN THE DRYER AND VENT IS THELEADING CAUSE OF DRYER FIRES. At Lake Barrington Shores, ourmaintenance team will clear the exit vent of your dryer whenyou submit a work order. However, you need to do more! It isrecommended by the NFPA, that you clean lint filters every timeyou use the dryer and clean the vent ductwork each year. Hereis a list of safety tips from the NFPA:

• Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional.Keep dryers in good working order.

• Do not use the dryer without a lint filter.

• Make sure you clean the lint filter before or after each load oflaundry. Remove lint that has collected around the drum.

• Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used to sustain proper air flow and drying time.

• Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restricted and theoutdoor vent flap will open when the dryer is operating. Oncea year, or more often if you notice that it is taking longer thannormal for your clothes to dry, clean lint out of the vent pipeor have a dryer lint removal service do it for you.

• Make sure the right plug and outlet are used and that the machine is connected properly. Dryers should be properlygrounded.

• Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’toverload your dryer.

• Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed.

• Keep the area around your dryer clear of things that can burn, like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing, etc.

• Clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, like gasoline, paint thinner, or similar solventsshould be laid outside to dry, then can be washed and driedas usual.

LBS PHOTO CLUBWith the “Shelter in Place” order in effect, we’ve had to cancelour LBS Photo Club meetings while The Lodge is closed. Thatdoesn’t mean we can’t enjoy photography, particularly outdoorphotography.

We can practice social distancing and still enjoy nature and photography, especially here at Lake Barrington Shores. Springis bird migration season and we have a lot of birds stopping bythe lake and woods on their way to permanent breeding homes.

Birds can be tricky to photograph, but you can learn how to capture birds in your neighborhood. Start by photographing largersized species of birds, like ducks herons and sandhill cranes. Sand-hill cranes are large and easier to photograph. You may find themwalking on the golf course. Lake Barrington has several visitingspecies of waterfowl during spring. If you’re patient, you might beable to photograph a new duck you’ve never seen before. Eachspring season, I’ve found unusual species swimming right on ourlake including loons, swans and several varieties of ducks.
