Rejoice and Be Glad: On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World, Part 2
This week, I will continue to write about the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis on the call to holiness, called Guadete Et Exultate (Rejoice and Be Glad). Francis reminds us that the call to be holy is not just for bishops, priests, and religious. Everyone is called to be holy by living our lives with love. (Paragraph # 14). Yes, we are weak and fall to sin at times, but then we must turn to the power of Christ and ask the Lord to help us grow toward holiness. (#15). We live a holy life in very ordinary ways, Pope Francis teaches. For example, by not taking part in gossip and by not speaking badly about another person, or when parents and grandparents spend time and play with their children and grandchildren, even though they are tired. (#16). Holiness is realized when we live the present moment with love and by doing small acts of kindness with humility, thinking of the needs of others before our own.
The Holy Father teaches that us that we must see our life as a mission to holiness. He encourages us to unite ourselves to Christ, who lives in us by virtue of our baptism. We are called to model our life on the life of Jesus and to let the light of Christ shine through us. In essence, we must look at our life as a mission to holiness, a mission to become a saint.
In the document Pope Francis also warns us about all the noise in the world that so often distracts us from God. “The presence of constantly new gadgets and an endless array of consumer goods at times leave no room for God’s voice to be heard.” (#29). How true this is for all of us and how important it is to find quiet in our lives. “Do not be afraid of holiness” the Pope tells us. (#32). “Do not be afraid to set your sights high and to allow yourself to be loved and liberated by God.” (#33). He quotes the author Leon Bloy and writes that “the only great tragedy in life is not to become a saint.” (#34).
There is much to ponder in the words of Pope Francis and I will continue these reflections throughout the summer. As we begin a new week think about how your ordinary acts of love, service, and sacrifice are really acts of holiness, especially when united with the love and sacrifice of Christ. Turn off your cell phone for some time this week and pray a decade of the rosary for the grace to grow in holiness.
God Bless you and your family, Father Vince
Dios te bendiga a ti y a tu familia, Padre Vicente

WHO CAN YOU INVITE? We are all called to be missionary disciples of our Lord. We are all called to welcome and invite others to think
about their faith. It’s not too early to think about our parish RCIA Program. Do you know anyone who has not
completed their Sacraments of Initiation and has not received their First Holy Communion or Confirmation?
Do you know anyone who is not baptized or is from another Christian denomination who may be searching to
enter the Catholic Church? Maybe you are the one God is calling to reach out and to invite. For information about
becoming Catholic or receiving the sacraments of Eucharist of Confirmation, please call Father Adam at the parish
office at 856-627-2222.
THE CATHOLIC STRONG CAMPAIGN Catholic Strong is coming to Our Lady of Guadalupe. You may have heard about Catholic Strong from
family or friends in other parishes. Our Parish is in Phase 2, which means we begin our campaign in earnest at the end of the summer. What is Catholic Strong? Catholic Strong is a campaign initiated by Bishop Sullivan
because he wants to keep our parish, and all parishes in South Jersey, strong. I know what you are thinking: “yikes, another financial campaign.” Yes, it is a financial campaign, but the good news is that 70% of all
funds we raise stay right here in our parish. No strings attached. We need to grow our parish and address critical building and pastoral needs. We need to keep our parish strong now and into the future. Our
grandparents and parents have kept the Catholic Faith alive and strong in our community. Now it is our turn.
We need to spread the Joy of the Gospel and become Missionary Disciples. You will be asked to pray and to think about making a pledge to this campaign in the near future. In advance, I thank you for all you already do
to grow our parish and keep Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Strong.
Our Lady of Grace, St. Luke, St. Lawrence, and Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
The 2019 Book for Mass and Candle Intentions will be open on August 1, 2018!
