WE REMEMBER …
It’s Memorial Day 2018 - A time when Americans will enjoy a three day weekend with parades, barbecues,
picnics, ceremonies, speeches, decorating graves, and yes, even shopping.
As a child, I remember Memorial Day because we had a gigantic neighborhood picnic. Families would bring
hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, potato salad, watermelon, cookies, cake – you name it – and all of us kids
could drink all the pop we wanted all day long. We would compare our red, orange and purple tongues to see
who drank the most pop. We stayed up way past our bedtimes, running, singing, playing and waving sparklers
amid motherly shouts of “Be careful! Don’t burn your fingers!”
But as the years have gone by, I see Memorial Day with new eyes. The older family members lived Normandy,
Monte Casino, planted Victory Gardens and donated metal and rubber for the war effort. No one talked about
Vietnam. Now I watch all the old movies – Saving Private Ryan, Bridge on the River Kwai, Patton, and my
favorite, Good Morning, Vietnam. Every year I look forward to Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna’s Memorial Day
Salute to those in the armed forces, past and present, and wipe my eyes thru every song, tribute and story.
I even stand to salute the flag. This might seem corny; but I still believe in the credos that fostered this nation.
I know we are not “a perfect Union”. However, I am proud to be an American and am grateful to the men and
women who have served our country. It is in this spirit that I share some of the following statements:
My brother told me that if he didn’t come home from Iraq, that we should tell people that he did his
job. He didn’t come home.
To me, Memorial Day is the day we remember what it means to be a hero.
Memorial Day is a day we are reminded of what combat veterans have given to this country, whether
it’s years of service, the first year of their marriage, or their lives. Every combat veteran has given
something to this country, without asking for anything in return.
Taking a day to remember those who fought for freedom. Not just our freedom, but the freedom of
millions around the world.
To remember why we can do the things we do and why we have things we have. Thanksgiving is the
time we stop to be thankful for what we have but Memorial Day is the day we stop and be thankful
for our soldiers and the country they have defended for us.
For many Americans, Memorial Day means sales, cookouts, family get-togethers and parades. For
others, it’s an empty seat at the picnic table. Someone’s son, daughter, father or mother, grandfather
or grandmother made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom’s and liberties we all enjoy.
So while you’re enjoying the steaks, burgers or hot dogs, potato salad and baked beans, take a moment at
3:00PM on Memorial Day – a National Moment of Remembrance - to remember how blessed we are in this
great country and those who kept us safe. While you honor their loss, celebrate and savor their lives and
always remember. I believe that’s all they would have asked in return.
In Peace, Frieda Bertello

In Loving Memory
MEMORIAL DAY
"No one has greater love than this,
to lay down one's life for one's
friends." Christians are no strangers
to sacrifice. Jesus lays down his life
for our redemption, martyrs remain
faithful to the end, and every
believer faces "deaths" in the
spiritual life when love requires a re-
ordering of preference and priority.
On Memorial Day, we honor those
who laid down their lives for their
nation and for the values we hold
dear - freedom, justice, and a better
world for our children. In a day that
often fills with barbeques and boat
launches, remember to take some
time in prayer! Intercede for those
who have died and for the loved
ones they left behind, and pray for
peace on earth.
Eternal rest, grant unto them, O
Lord, and may perpetual light shine
upon them.
Pray for the Sick

SHARING IS CARING
Last week, we thanked all the volunteers who picked up food,
sorted and unpacked thousands of pounds of food collected from
the Postal Carrier Food Drive. Almost 15,000 pounds of food
filled the shelves of the Food Pantry to overflowing.
We called the Pro Labore Dei (Robbins) Food Pantry and they
came and loaded up their van with the overflow. They were
ecstatic!
On Tuesday, May 15, the van traveled to St. John Fisher School. There Pro Libore Dei volunteers and
25 seventh grade school children unloaded, sorted and put together grocery bags. 130 bags of
food were distributed to the hungry.
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a
stranger and you invited me in.” Matt 25:35 All the volunteers - from the generous donors to the postal
carriers to the volunteers at St. Damian and children from St. John Fisher – all gave of their time and
effort to care for those who have less.

CORPUS CHRISTI
Processions are not indigenous to Americans. We Americans prefer parades. However, we do participate in some. We honored a few of our presidents:John F. Kennedy, and before him, Franklin Delano Roosevelt with funeralprocessions; and were glued to the TV during the tragic death of PrincessDiana of England. In 2017, we witnessed the Chicago Cubs World SeriesTrophy Procession.
On June 3, we will celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christ, acknowledging theReal Presence of the body and blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in theEucharist. As Catholics, can show our love for Christ in the Real Presence byhonoring Him in a very public way – a procession.
In preparation for this feast day, there will be 40 Hours of Adoration in theChapel beginning Friday, June 1 at 3:00 PM and ending Sunday, June 3 at6:45 AM. There will be sign-up sheets in the Narthex to choose a time slot. All are encouraged to spend some time with Jesus in silent prayer andreflection during this time.
So join us in procession after the 12:30 PM Mass. Refreshments and lightsnacks will be served afterwards.
Join the Owen W. Winter, Jr. VFW
Post 4241 and the City of Oak
Forest for this year's Memorial Day
ceremony at City Hall.
Enjoy musical selections from Oak
Forest High School choir and band
members. Local organizations will
be presenting floral wreaths in
memory of individuals who died
while serving in the country's armed
forces.
This event is free and open to the
public.
