spring clean-up of the landscaping at the Metro SouthChamber of Commerce building at School Street inBrockton. Pictured is Jonnie Watkins, Work Express

homeless people valuable work experience in asupportive environment; it has grown from 8 to 20 participants. Each person works four hours every

morning on basic cleaning, maintenance and landscaping activities in downtown Brockton. In theafternoon and evenings, participants attend adult education and life skills classes, as well as receive

individual career counseling.

expanded Salisbury Park in Brockton.

The Office of the City Plannerhas received a Smart GrowthInnovation Award for theGreening of the Salisbury . CityCouncil President JamesHarrington and City PlannerNancy Stack Savoie accepted theaward from Governor MittRomney in a ceremony on Boston’sEsplanade on April 19.

“Ten years ago, no one wouldhave believed that the SalisburyRiver would become an importantcomponent in Brockton’s UrbanRenaissance’ said City PlannerNancy Stack Savoie. On April 7,city officials broke ground for thenewest park in the greenway at

the corner of Crescent andMontello streets. The planningfor the Greening of the Salisburybegan approximately eight yearsago in recognition of the need forincreased green space in downtown.

The new park was an aban-doned gas station for 10 years. “Itwas an eyesore said Savoie butsoon it will be a beautiful placewith flowering shrubs and trees,benches and some picnic tableswhere people who live and workin the city will be able to sit andenjoy lunch.” The SalisburyGreenway Park will also feature abrick walkway and a stone wallthat will screen out traffic noisefrom Crescent Street. The parkwill also feature a water fountainin the midst of 16 granitecolumns.
