I’m not sure if it is the weather (or at least the lack of warmth in the weather) or what, but it sure doesn’t feel like it was that long ago when we were welcoming kids to school in the fall. Time has really flown by! I did want to highlight a few upcoming events in these last few weeks of school that are definitely worth noting: June 2 nd Choir concert at LPHS auditorium (7:00 PM). Mr. Chavarin has done an outstanding job with our students again this year and all of their hard work will be on display this evening. I encourage you to attend and see for yourself our talented kids. June 8 th This last Wednesday of the school year has traditionally been a full day (LPMS students released at 2:30 instead of 12:50) – and will be again this year. You may have noticed that the district calendars this year indicated that this would not be a full day… but it is. Students will be dismissed at 2:30. June 9 th We will be recognizing our 8 th graders with an assembly in the morning, a BBQ at lunch, some fun activities in the afternoon, and a dance later that evening. A big “thank you” is due to the parents who have spent hours and hours planning, organizing, ordering and fund raising to make this day possible! June 10 th This is the last day for both students and staff. Students will be served lunch early and then dismissed at 11:00. Due to cut in teacher days, this will also be the last day that most staff will report to work until next fall. I believe I said this in one of the first newsletters of the year, but let me say it again… I love being back at La Pine Middle School! This is a great place for students to be educated from a dedicated and caring staff that want only the best for your child. I feel blessed to be a part of this community of learning. Enjoy these summer months (and hopefully a little more sunshine)! HAWK TALK May Greetings . . .

May has arrived and June is just around the corner. I’m not sure if it is the weather (or at least the lack of warmth in the weather) or what, but it sure doesn’t feel like it was that long ago when we were welcoming kids to school in the fall. Time has really flown by!

I did want to highlight a few upcoming events in these last few weeks of school that are definitely worth noting:

• June 2nd Choir concert at LPHS auditorium (7:00 PM). Mr. Chavarin has done an outstanding job with our students again this year and all of their hard work will be on display this evening. I encourage you to attend and see for yourself our talented kids.

• June 8th This last Wednesday of the school year has traditionally been a full day (LPMS students released at 2:30 instead of 12:50) – and will be again this year. You may have noticed that the district calendars this year indicated that this would not be a full day… but it is. Students will be dismissed at 2:30.

• June 9th We will be recognizing our 8th graders with an assembly in the morning, a

BBQ at lunch, some fun activities in the afternoon, and a dance later that evening. A big “thank you” is due to the parents who have spent hours and hours planning, organizing, ordering and fund raising to make this day possible!

• June 10th This is the last day for both students and staff.

Oregon raises math and reading standards The State Board of Education recently changed the way it evaluates math and reading skills of Oregon students. The bar has been raised. Students must achieve a higher test score to meet state standards. What are the changes? 2010-2011 School Year: The Oregon State Board of Education raised the 2010-2011 achievement standards for math skills in grades 3 through 8. 2011-2012 School Year: The Oregon State Board of Education raised the 2011-2012 achievement standards for reading skills in grades 3 through 8. These changes will result in some students receiving lower achievement ratings and schools having lower percentages of students meeting standards. It will not mean students know less than they did the year before or that their skills have not improved since their last state assessment. See the graphic to the right for an example of what the changes mean. Why did Oregon adopt higher standards? Higher expectations will better prepare students for success in high school and equip them to meet Oregon graduation requirements. The adoption also will ease Oregonʼs transition to measuring students on national learning expectations. These are more challenging than Oregonʼs current standards. continued

Oregon raised the 2010-2011 achievement standards for math assessments in grades 3–8. To illustrate what this means, the chart above shows a third-grade student who met the old standard (left side). As a fourth grader, the same student scored 7 points higher — high enough to meet the old standard of 212, but not the new one of 219.
