The Chronicler September 2015 Spotsylvania, VA All Saints Party On Saturday, September 19 we’re having a party. It sure doesn’t seem like it’s been 10 years since we built All Saints Hall. I guess I may have to stop calling it the ‘new’ building. It was dedicated on April 15, 2005. The original vision for the building was that it would be a community building, in addition to meeting the needs of our congregation. I think it’s safe to say that it has, and continues to, fulfill that vision. So we’re having a party to celebrate! The picnic on the 19 th will stand in place of our usual parish picnic we have in September. But we are inviting everyone who has been blessed by the building and the ministries it houses. In the past, All Saints Hall has been a community building by housing a weekly parent support group operated by the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB), a Cub Scout Pack, and a Boy Scout Troop. Currently we house an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting every Friday evening, the Food Pantry twice a month (not to mention the space dedicated to the pantry 24/7), and of course our current rental to the Rappahannock Adult Activities, Inc. We have invited these people to come be our guests at the picnic. It has indeed been a community building, but of course we can’t forget about the ways that All Saints Hall has supported parish life. Imagine the Harvest Festival without the great hall. Imagine our Sunday School classes without the classrooms they enjoy. Imagine Vacation Bible School without such a great space to utilize. And no one in the choir or the quilters wants to go back to the days before they had their own rooms to meet in and store their stuff in. If you know me, you know that I’m not the type to be excited about a building. However, I am very excited about what this building has facilitated in terms of good outreach and support for our community. So I see the celebration on the 19 th not as a celebration of the building itself, but as a celebration of ministry. I am personally thankful to everyone whose generosity and commitment have made all this ministry possible. As I look at the things listed above, I realize how inadequate the words are to encompass the amazing work to the glory of God and to the service of God’s people that All Saints Hall has enabled over the past 10 years. I hope that you can come to the party. I think that will be the best way to acknowledge and lift up this work as an offering to God. After all, we named it “All Saints Hall” in recognition of the fact that all believers are saints of God. We are all saints, and the saints will be gathered on the 19 th . We extend a warm welcome to Tom & Judy Murphy of

Morristown, NJ who visited us in July; and to Tom and

Dorothy Perin who attended on August 9th

. We always

love to greet new guests and hope, in time, they can and

will join our chuch family.

Our prayers go out to the family of Sean D. Doud, husband of Heather Amy

Daniels Doud and father of Anna and Johnathan. Sean passed away suddenly on

June 4, 2015. He also leaves his in-laws, Al and Alice Daniels, and his parents

John and Mary Doud and numerous other family members. “May his soul and the

souls of all the departed, by the mercy of God, rest in peace.”

On June 28, 2015, with open arms, our church family welcomed Sophia

Annabelle Parson, daughter of John and Christina Parson, into our faith and

family. All of God’s grace with one little face. Welcome Sophia Annabelle!

Church School Begins Again

Christian Education for all ages starts its fall classes on Sunday, September 13. Children, from

preschool through high school will meet in the classrooms downstairs in All Saints Hall, while the adults will

meet in the Great Hall upstairs at 9:15 AM.

The adults will continue their overview study of the Old Testament using the Kerygma program

“Discovering the Bible”. We will resume with session 8 on The Kings.

We are starting a new class for high school students who have already been Confirmed. It will meet

during the normal Christian Ed time, 9:15 to 10:15 Sunday mornings, and will cover a wide variety of topics

with the help of a wide variety of leaders, each working with the group for 3 to 6 weeks at a time and covering

one topic. This discussion based class will be, we hope, interesting and challenging for all involved. Stay

tuned for more information.

Confirmation Class Convening

Father Packard will once again be offering a Confirmation Class starting this fall. At this time, we do not

know when we will have a visit from the bishop for Confirmation. If you are interested in taking the class,

please let Father Packard know. We will schedule a time that is most convenient for everyone. This class is

appropriate for anyone, youth or adult, who is interested in, or curious about, Confirmation. You also may

enjoy the class as a refresher course. And finally, it is recommended for anyone who is relatively new to the

Episcopal Church, whether or not you are interested in Confirmation.

Quilters Raffle Tickets on Sale

Want to be a winner of a double-bed size quilt hand-crafted by our very own Christ Church

Quilters? Tickets are selling for $1.50 for one or $10.00 for a book of ten. You may purchase

tickets outside of the church after the 10:30 service or, Tuesday through Saturday, 10- 4, at the

Thrift Shop (cashier). Most importantly, the raffle will take place at the Christ Church Car Show

on Saturday, October 3. Be a winner, buy one or more tickets!

Original Christ Church Bible and Book of Common Prayer

The Episcopal Church Women has committed to restore our original Lectern Bible and the 1841

Book of Common Prayer. We have contacted the same woman who did such a good job on the

Mattaponi Bible. The cost for both totals $1,875.00. The ECW plans to use the money from

their 208 Sale Trail bake sale and the bake sale at the Car Show towards the expense of

restoration. However the cost is more than the bake sales will cover. Therefore, we are inviting

contributions from the congregation to help. If you would like to contribute, please make a

check out to Christ Church with ECW Books on the memo line and put it in the plate by

September 13. We hope you will help save them for future generations.

The 3rd

Annual Spotsylvania 24-Mile Yard Sale (208 Sale Trail)

Will be held on Friday and Saturday, September 11 and 12 along Rt. 208 in historic Spotsylvania

County. Our Thrift Shop will be participating by renting lot spaces in our front yard.

Additionally, in order to ensure the success of this popular event, we are seeking not only

donations but individuals willing to help set up and assist and keep clientele moving through the

Shop. Generous donors like you are the key to our outreach success and makes it possible for

the Christ Church Thrift Shop to provide local individuals and families in need with assistance

and critical services. We hope that we can also count on your financial support to help us. All

donations are tax deductible.

EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN (ECW) UPDATE

In September, we begin another year of service. Our regular meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each

month at 11:30 a.m. in the Great Hall. Please join us as we strive to strengthen our group and make Christ

Church the benefactor of our diligent efforts. We ask that you join us in the following projects:

- September 11-12: A 2-day bake sale to aid the Thrift Shop during the Route 208 Sale Trail.

Money from our bake sale goes for repair of the Bible and Prayer book.

- September 15: Our regular meetings resume. Our programs will again be on Saints. Martha Clark

will start us off with Saint Roch the patron Saint of dogs and dog lovers. Jessi will be with her to assist.

- October 3: Support our Car Show in its efforts to raise money for our church by, again, bringing in baked

goods. We will need plenty of baked goods and workers for both events to succeed in raising money. Again

ECW will donate our money to the book repairs.

- October 23: We participate in the Harvest Festival and donate mums for a raffle with the proceeds going

to help with the holiday baskets (outreach).

NOTE: Please keep these dates in mind when planning your fall activities. There will be sign-up sheets in

ASH at the Communication Center. In addition to the sign-up sheets, Elaine and Debbie will be outside after

the 8 and 10:30 AM services with their "trusty clipboards". Any questions, please call Debbie Garland at

898-8732 or Elaine Wyant at 786-3267.

- November: At our monthly meeting, one of our favorite projects is the making of Christmas ornaments

out of old Christmas cards.

- December: This is when we display our singing talents and spread holiday cheer with the residents of an area

nursing home by caroling and sharing the Christmas card ornaments we made at our November meeting.

- January and February: are usually non-project months as snow or icy weather can keep us from our

planned meetings. But we do vote on our giving to the Diocese at one of those meetings.

-March: We gear up and begin planning for our annual plant and bake sale that takes place in April.

- April: It's all hands on deck to make the plant and bake sale successful as it's our only fund raiser.

- May: A favorite tradition for us: our end of year trip to an area Episcopal Church to learn of its place in

history.

We are few in number but dedicated and with the help and support of our church family, we look forward to

another year of service and hope those of you who haven't yet joined us, will.

UNITED THANK OFFERING (UTO)

If you have a UTO box at home, please continue to drop a coin in it each day to thank God for your many

blessings. If you don't, boxes are available at the Communications Center and the back of the church.

These boxes are collected at the Harvest Festival at the end of October. Give with your heart.

Choir Director Update

Unfortunately we did not get anyone interested in our choir director position when we advertised over the

summer. We plan to advertise again in September with a simplified job description.

Parish Picnic/ASH 10 Year Celebration ~ September 19

Our parish picnic is a little different this year. We will have the picnic on Saturday, September 19, starting at

1:00 PM. We have invited everyone who has benefitted from the use of All Saints Hall—those served by

our food pantry, clients of the Rappahannock Adult Activities, Inc.—and several VIPs as our guests. We

look forward to an afternoon of fun, food and festivities. Elaine Wyant is in charge of planning the food.

With the invited guests, we have a menu for the event and are asking members to prepare certain dishes.

Speak to Elaine if you haven’t yet been asked to bring food. We hope everyone can come and enjoy this

celebration of ministry and fellowship.

St. Francis Day Blessing of the Animals

October 4 is St. Francis Day. This year the day falls on a Sunday. Rather than having the usual extra service

in the afternoon that day for the animal blessings, we’re going to do something different this year. We will

have an outdoor service for the 10:30 service and incorporate the animal blessing in that. So plan on coming

with your dog, cat, parrot, boa constrictor, okapi, ai ai or whatever pet you have. We will, as usual, provide

refreshments following the service for all creatures great and small.

Foot note: We usually have an outdoor service on the day of our parish picnic, and with the picnic on a

Saturday this year, we didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to have an outdoor service on a Sunday

morning.

Acolyte Festival at the Washington National Cathedral ~ October 10

The National Cathedral hosts an acolyte festival every year. Acolytes attending process the entire tenth of a

mile up the main aisle in their vestments, carrying cross, torches, and banners from their home church. It is

an exciting experience to see people from all over the United States. After the service that opens the festival,

they have workshops in the afternoon on a number of acolyte related topics. It was at the festival a few years

ago that we were inspired to add the jubilation streamers that we now use on feast days. Registration

deadline is September 25. Cost with lunch is $39 or $27 if you pack your own. Speak to Father Packard if

you are interested.

Vacation Bible School 2015: God is….Real, With us, Strong, Awesome and In Charge.

Eighteen elementary kids and 13 youth got out of the summer doldrums at VBS the first week in August.

They had fun and learned about God through Old Testament stories of Jericho and the river Jordan and the

awesome story of Christ’s resurrection. (Ask Penny about “Episco-toast”!) The younger group sang, did

dramatics with the Bible stories, made crafts, played games and ate snacks – all centered around the theme of

the day. The teens studied the same lessons in the afternoon with Father Jeff, from an “older kid” perspective.

Then we investigated science topics suggested by the lessons (fingerprints, codes and ciphers, sound and vortex

cannons, river pollution and cleaning up muddy water). And of course we had crafts, games and snacks. Our

day to tube or play in the river got rained out, but we had fun with pizza, a physical challenges obstacle course

and playing games together.

Many thanks to Penny Knepp, who helped with planning and set up, prepped and organized the snack time

each day and supported the afternoon program with the teens; Karen & Tim Watts (tagteaming around Karen’s

early summer surgery) who worked on planning, set up, getting materials and teaching the Bible story and

games rotations; Jenny LeBlanc, who helped with the planning for this year’s VBS; Wayne Knepp, who helped

out with one of the teen science projects; Martha Ayres, who helped out with crafts (adding a dash of sanity on

a day that needed it!); Martha Clark and Jessi, who came by to teach a little about therapy dogs (and dogs in

general); Mackenzie Goldberg, who provided extra hands where needed; and the teens who did extra duty in

helping with the younger kids’ program in the mornings: Matthew LeBlanc, Meghan LeBlanc, Ethan Goldberg,

Leslie Bates and Olivia Erwin; and Father Jeff, who taught the teen Bible study each day (even on his day off!).

Let’s take a trip on the Rappahannock! We’ll go canoeing/kayaking when the weather’s a bit cooler and the

fall colors are out. Once again, Bill Micks of the Virginia Outdoor Center is providing a free trip for Christ

Church. We’ll meet at the river after the late service on Sunday, October 11. More details will be made

available and signups for the trip will start in late September. Questions? Email Kristi at

OUTREACH COMMISSION

Again this year, we are more than fortunate to have the remarkable volunteers that served last

year take on this awesome responsibility. Jim and Janice Kenkel will be in charge of the

Thanksgiving Basket brigade. Penny Knepp, Kristi Gross and Bill Butler will be responsible for

the Christmas brigade. However, if you will check out the paragraphs below, we need packers to

assist these fine people that have already willingly stepped up to the plate.

In addition to our request for assistance during the holiday season, since the food pantry is open

12 months a year and serves hundreds of people twice a month, we are asking, if your holiday

schedule prevents you from helping out, perhaps you could find your calling in assisting the

Food Pantry in other areas or at other times of the year. For more information, contact Tracy

Magin on (540) 898-3640 or [email protected].

Packing of Christmas Baskets: Sign-up sheets will be posted in the Communications

Center after Thanksgiving. Packers will be needed: Thursday, December 17, 7 PM; and Friday,

December18 at noon (assemble baskets if needed). Distribution is on Saturday, December 20,

and we ask that you arrive by 9:00 AM. We plan to begin distributing the baskets at 9:30 by

noon.

Packing of Thanksgiving Baskets: We are asking for volunteers to

please sign up in the Communications Center to help pack Thanksgiving

boxes for our food pantry clients. Packers are needed: Thursday, November

19, 7 PM; and Friday, November 20 at noon (assemble baskets if needed).

Distribution is on Saturday, November 21, and we ask, if you’re able, to

arrive by 9:00 AM. We plan to begin distributing the baskets at 9:30 and

finish by noon.

ECM ~ This month, ECM will meet on Tuesday, September 8 at 6 pm - til in the Great Hall.

Final plans for the Parish Picnic to be held on September 19 will be discussed. Please try to attend and

help “brainstorm” for suggestions/ideas that we can use at this big event.

Fellowship ~ We want and need you to share yourself and your time hosting Fellowship on

Sundays. Fellowship hour is a very important ministry as it gives us time to socialize/unwind once a

week as a church family. You can host in honor of someone or in celebration of an event. Talk to Bill

Butler about hosting and then sign up at the Communication Center. Even once a month will help.

Christ Church Recycles

Bring in your used ink jet cartridges and place them in the box at the Communication Center at ASH.

Each cartridge has the potential to bring in $4. Sorry, no Epson ink jet or laser cartridges accepted.

This is a permanent feature, so please remember to recycle your cartridges at any time of the year. If

you have any questions, please contact Ruth, our parish secretary. Also, we have a large green

dumpster out back that you can dump all your newspapers or paperback books into.

You can also recycle your old eye glasses and hearing aids by placing them in the box at the

Communications Center. Thanks to Greg Hall and Ann Woolford for being our contacts with the

Lions Club on this important work.
