YOUR INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS CHAIRIt’s nice to meet you

Hey everyone in the K-T District! I’m Katie Tilton and I am your new International Projects Chair. This is my first year on the K-T district board and I can’t express how excited I am to get to experience what this next year will bring! I’ve met everyone on board with me already and the other board members are truly lovely!

Let me tell you a little more about myself before I go on to tell you about my plans for this next year. I’m going to be a senior at my school, Paul G. Blazer, this upcoming fall. I’m heavily involved at my school, I am the treasurer of Beta Club, I’m on the number one doubles team for my school’s tennis team, I’m a Student Council representative, a member in Latin Club, Latin Honor Society, National Honor Society, Art Club, Environmental Club, Chemistry Club, and of course, Key Club.

I was my school’s 2012-2013 Key Club historian and I have been in the club all three years of high school career and was in Builders Club both years during middle school. This club really brought me out of my shell, and I’m really grateful for that. Being able to share what this club is doing is an honor and I hope I serve the K-T District well!

The Key of HonorReceived by Carolyn Hamilton By: Steve Phillips

The prestigious Key of Honor is the highest honor bestowed by Key Club International. The award recognizes individuals who have gone beyond the call of duty to serving the youth of our nation.  The Key of Honor is not awarded every year – only in years when deserving individuals are identified.  This year one of the Kentucky-Tennessee District’s own, Carolyn Hamilton, has been named as a recipient of the Key of Honor.

Carolyn has been supporting Key Club’s youth as a Key Club faculty advisor in the Kentucky-Tennessee District for over 20 years.  Throughout this time she has changed lives over and over again, sometimes directly and at other times indirectly, sometimes quietly and sometimes very visibly, sometimes deliberately but most often without even realizing it. Immediate past K-T District Key Club governor, Katie Stuart notes, “Mrs. Hamilton has had a far-reaching impact upon my life, and I hope one day to guide young people as she has guided me.”  Immediate past district secretary, Emily Meffert writes, “I ascribe much of my growth as an individual to this

person’s encouragement and direction.”  Echoing this sentiment, a former Ezekiel Fugate says: “Few people have had as profound an impact on my life. I didn’t know it when I was in her high school calculus class, but the lessons this person imparted to me would shape the rest of my life.”

“Few People Have had as profound an

impact on my life.”

The testimony from former Key Clubbers whose lives have been impacted could go and on.  But, this year’s recipient also has a positive effect on many adults. Jonathon Fields, former colleague credits Mrs. Hamilton with showing him how to be the right kind of Key Club advisor. He writes: “I learned a great deal about caring, serving, and how to lead students from the back of the room rather than in the front behind a podium. Another former student, who is

now an educator, continues to be impacted by Carolyn as an adult. He says, “I strive to connect with my students in the way that this person connected with me, by showing them that I truly care about their success and fulfillment, not only in the classroom but also in life.”

When Sarah Nixon a former student and classroom asked Mrs. Hamilton if there was a “secret formula” for reaching students, her was short and simple:…. “Be there for them.”  And Carolyn has been there for so many people.  She is first and foremost a devoted wife and mother, who would move heaven and earth for her family. She is a devout church member. She is an involved community volunteer who never tires of helping others. She is an extraordinary Kiwanis Advisor and Key Club Zone Chair. She is a teacher, a builder of leaders, a motivator, a counselor, a disciplinarian, and a best friend all rolled into one.   She is, in short, a phenomenon.

For all she does, but most of all for the wonderful person she is, this summer at the Key Club International Convention in Washington, DC,  the prestigious Key of Honor will be awarded to Carolyn Hamilton.

Children’s Miracle NetworkChildren’s Miracle Network is a

nonprofit organization that has raised over $4.7 billion to benefit hospitalized kids. About one child will enter a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for treatment every second. Some of these children are battling cancer, some are suffering from traumatic injuries, others were simply born too early, or with a genetic disease. In 1997 Key Club International decided to make Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals an official charity of choice and has kept it one since, raising over $1.8 million, with Kiwanis International’s help, for the organization.UNICEF

Key Club has been a partnering organization of UNICEF since 1994. The Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF has raised nearly $5 million for iodine deficiency programs worldwide. Now Key Club is helping with The Eliminate Project by raising $110 million by 2015. If this is accomplished then it could very well eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, protecting millions of women and babies. This organization also fights for many different causes such as gender equality, working to ensure rights for girls and women; equal education around the world; FGM/FGC; and HIV/AIDS awareness.

March of DimesMarch of Dimes is the third charity that Key Club organizations are

encouraged to work with. March of Dimes foundation’s mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. It also gives money back to communities to help ensure that women are informed about how to increase the likelihood that they will have healthy, full-term pregnancies. Franklin D. Roosevelt founded the March of Dimes to fight against polio. After the discovery of the polio vaccine, this organization has focused on improving the health of babies and has been successful due to the help of many volunteers. Since 1978, Key Club has hosted many fundraising and awareness projects for the March of Dimes.

The Daviess County local Key Club raised money by having homerooms compete to see which home room could collect the most money for the ELIMINATE project. The club made it so that the homeroom that raised the most money each day received doughnuts for the entire class the following morning. The club spent only $20 each

day on the supplies and after five days they had $1300 to donate to the ELIMINATE project. The $1300 will save 800 mothers and babies from

maternal and neonatal

tetanus. This club went above and beyond! Encourage

your local club to get

Summer is here! Many of you are already out of school, but just because there are no more school bells or dress codes to abide by shouldn’t mean putting service behind you! You may be imagining lazy days playing video games, fun in the sun by the pool, or scooping ice cream into your face; but remember that even though we’re a service organization doesn’t mean we cant have a little fun! Your community needs help year round, there is no pause just because the weather got warmer! Participate in a fundraiser with your local Kiwanis club, help out at a soup kitchen in your area, or at a Ronald McDonald House near you! Here are some other ideas for great summer projects to do with your school club or with clubs from around your district:

Pet Adoption DriveHold an event to help get pets adopted from a

local shelter! Bring the pets out where you can see them, hold a drawing with anyone who adopts, or advertise in the community to find them homes!

Planning Details: • Get copying and flyers donated • Have professional help with the animals • Find a public and visible location • Get prizes for a drawing donated • Have printed information

Dodgeball TournamentHold a Dodgeball tournament for your

favorite charity! Sign up teams, get local news coverage, and have great prizes for the winning teams!

Planning Details: • Have a fee to enter a team • Talk to local news and papers to cover • Get permission to use the gym or local facilities and

have teachers as referees • Sell snacks and souvenirs to attendees

Car BashGet an old car donated and have some fun!

Sell time to bash the car! Provide bats or bars to beat the car up and make a big event of it!

Planning Details: • Have a plan to deal with glass and metal car

fragments • Have drinks and snack available on site • Get some music and have a blast

Museum GuidesVolunteer at your local museum! Find an art or

science museum! Volunteer to show visitors around. Share some information and lead tours of kids to give them a better experience of the museum! Use this unique opportunity to do some hands on service that shows Key Club in a great light! Don’t forget to read up on your subjects!

Planning Details: • Find a local museum to support and contact museum

officials to offer your services • Look into the content and history of the museum • Train your guides on museum information • Set dates for which guides will work and when

ICONWashington D.C.

The 70th annual Key Club International Convention will be held July 3- July 6, 2013 in Washington, DC. The K-T District is once again offering a tour to the convention. The tour provides students with the opportunity to attend the convention and enjoy Washington, DC and the surrounding area.

Elizabeth Smart is the guest speaker for the events. Her speech not only includes her personal story, but also discusses topics such as overcoming extreme adversity, the importance and process of recovery, and not allowing your past to dictate your life's future. Michael C. Anthony is scheduled to perform his show “Sleight of Mind” which is a mind boggling, interactive experience that will make you gasp in awe. Michael will read the minds of complete strangers. He will tell people their birth date, the amount of money in their pocket, he will predict things that will happen at your event months in advance. He will even read the thoughts of your friend in another state with your cell phone. Impossible? Think again!

Enjoy trading pins, vote on the people running for international board positions, and meet key clubbers from all over the country! I can’t wait to meet all of you in the K-T District who are coming to ICON, it’s going to be a blast and a half !
