JIMMY’S HALL (12A)13 – 19 JUNE

BRIGHT DAYS AHEAD (15)27 JUNE – 3 JULY

BELLE (12A)20 – 26 JUNE

THE WIND RISES (PG)13, 14, 17 & 18 JUNE

Director: Ken Loach. Starring: Barry Ward, Simone Kirby, Andrew Scott. UK/Ireland 2014. 109 mins.

The true story of Jimmy Gralton’s mission to energise a rural community in 1930s Ireland by opening a dance hall is told by Ken Loach and writer Paul Laverty (Looking for Eric) with their trademark bittersweet vigour. Social activist Gralton sees the abandoned hall as a means of overcoming the grinding poverty and cultural isolation wreaked by the Depression. With opposition from the Church, reopening it is of course a challenge, but he and his friends are prepared to risk violence and intolerance because “it’s not just a building, it’s what we are.” Contains strong language and moderate violence.

Director: Marion Vernoux. Starring: Fanny Ardant, Laurent Lafi tte, Patrick Chesnais. France 2013. 94 mins. French with English subtitles.

When dentist Caroline retires, her daughters pack her off to a string of banal evening classes. Luckily one of them is run by Julien, a handsome 30-something with an eye for the ladies – including older ones. With Fanny Ardant giving a standout lead performance, this funny and thought-provoking tale of one woman’s rather enjoyable late-life crisis is as refreshing as it is entertaining.

Director: Amma Asante. Starring: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Matthew Goode, Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson. UK 2013. 104 mins.

British director Amma Asante delivers a rich romantic drama set in the 18th century. The illegitimate child of an English admiral and an African woman, Dido (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, giving a breakout performance) is raised in England under the care of her great-uncle Lord Mansfi eld (Tom Wilkinson). But her fate takes an unexpected turn when she falls in love with an idealistic young man.Contains brief sexual assault and discrimination theme.

Director: Hayao Miyazaki. Voices: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, Jennifer Grey, Mae Whitman, Elijah Wood. Japan 2013. 127 mins.

Visionary director Hayao Miyazaki delivers his farewell masterpiece. Young Jiro Horikoshi dedicates his life to building fl ying machines. But with Japan’s entry into World War II, he begins to feel a terrible guilt because of the deaths his machines have caused. This profound and beautiful retelling of Horikoshi’s real-life story deftly combines Studio Ghibli’s mesmerising style with some diffi cult questions about love, humanity, creation and invention.

CAMILLE CLAUDEL 1915 (CERT TBC)11, 12, 15 & 16 JULY

Director: Bruno Dumont. Starring: Juliette Binoche, Jean-Luc Vincent. France 2013. TBC mins. French with English subtitles.

Bruno Dumont (Hors Satan) teams up with the incomparable Juliette Binoche to explore three days in the life of sculptor Camille Claudel. In 1913 Claudel was confi ned by her family to a mental institution, where she remained for the rest of her life. This profoundly moving fi lm follows the struggles of her brother, the poet Paul Claudel (Jean-Luc Vincent), as well as those of the artist whose spirit was eventually crushed by unjust confi nement.

OF HORSES AND MEN (CERT TBC)5, 6, 8 & 9 JULY

Director: Benedikt Erlingsson. Starring: Ingvar Eggert Sigur∂sson, Charlotte Bøving, Helgi Björnsson. Iceland/Germany 2013. TBC mins. Icelandic with English subtitles.

This episodic meditation on the relationship between Icelanders and the ponies that are essential to life in their harsh climate is brimful of droll humour, simmering sexual desire and violence – amongst those with four legs as well as with two. Writer-director Benedikt Erlingsson’s fi lm explores local rivalries, social solidarity, deep passions and the power of nature. A sprightly soundtrack and lucid cinematography heighten this multi-award winner’s considerable appeal.

T. S. SPIVET (CERT TBC)4 – 10 JULY

Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Starring: Kyle Catlett, Helena Bonham Carter, Judy Davis. France/Canada 2013. TBC mins.

When ten-year-old science prodigy T. S. Spivet wins an award from the Smithsonian for his perpetual motion machine, he leaves his eccentric Montana family behind and absconds to Washington aboard a freight train. His adventures en route, and his celebrity status once there, shed alternately comical, touching and revealing light on human frailties. Writer-director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Micmacs, Amelie) invests this delightful fi lm with his hallmark idiosyncrasies and visual panache.

Page 8: Corn Exchange Film Brochure June - Aug 2014

THE 100-YEAR-OLD MAN WHO CLIMBED OUT THE WINDOW AND DISAPPEARED (15)18 – 24 JULY

BOYHOOD (CERT TBC)25 – 31 JULY

CYCLING WITH MOLIÈRE (CERT TBC)18 – 24 JULY

Director: Philippe Le Guay. Starring: Fabrice Luchini, Lambert Wilson, Maya Sansa. France 2013. TBC mins. French with English subtitles.

Grumpy Serge (co-writer Fabrice Luchini, In the House) is a retired actor now living reclusively on a French island. Dashing TV soap star Gauthier Valence (Lambert Wilson, The Princess of Montpensier) suddenly shows up and exhorts Serge to appear in Molière’s The Misanthrope. Director Philippe Le Guay’s witty study of the grudging friends’ rivalry over a local divorcee (Maya Sansa) has deliberate echoes of Truffaut’s Jules et Jim.

Director: Felix Herngren. Starring: Robert Gustafsson, Iwar Wiklander, Mia Skäringer, Alan Ford. Sweden 2013. 114 mins. Swedish with English subtitles.

Opening as described on the tin, this dark Scandinavian comedy quickly becomes a succession of absurd chance encounters interlaced with bizarre, Zelig-like fl ashbacks. Allan Karlsson, played with subtle relish by the distinguished Robert Gustafsson, bumbles his way from a nursing home into a seedy criminal netherworld, with a deliciously typecast Alan Ford (Snatch) as an enraged villain determined to recover the loot Karlsson has inadvertently appropriated. Avoiding comedy clichés, the fi lm is consistently amusing yet with an underlying tension and real affection for its characters.

Director: Richard Linklater. Starring: Ellar Coltrane, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette. USA 2014. TBC mins.

Richard Linklater (Before Midnight) follows a boy’s life from the ages of six to 18 – actually shot in real time. Ellar Coltrane plays Mason, the son of Mason Snr and Olivia (Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette). As his divorced parents fi nd new partners, Mason Jnr faces emotional and physical uncertainties with growing maturity; while the changes he undergoes are obvious, they’re subtly matched by those of his parents in this unique collaborative feat.

JERSEY BOYS (15)11 – 17 JULY

Director: Clint Eastwood. Starring: John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Christopher Walken. USA 2014. 134 mins.

Having previously brought jazz, country ’n’ western and the blues to the screen, Eastwood now takes on 1960s pop. Distinguished by the tingling falsetto of Frankie Valli (John Lloyd Young, reprising his Broadway role), The Four Seasons had a string of international hits. This vibrant biopic is based squarely on the hit stage musical, with Christopher Walken playing the mobster who tries to muscle in on the act’s success.

BEGIN AGAIN (15)1 – 7 AUGUST

FINDING VIVIAN MAIER (CERT TBC)3 & 5 AUGUST

Director: John Carney. Starring: Mark Ruffalo, Keira Knightley, Catherine Keener, Hailee Steinfeld. USA 2013. 104 mins.

In this uplifting tale from the director of Once, Mark Ruffalo is Dan, a New York record-label boss who is flailing in both his personal and professional life, and Keira Knightley plays Greta, a songwriter whose career has derailed since her partner hit the big time. When Dan hears her performance at an open-mic night, he suspects that she might just be the real deal. Resisting predictable plot turns, Carney keeps us guessing the trajectory of our two lost souls in this crowd-pleaser.

Directors: John Maloof, Charlie Siskel. USA 2013. TBC mins.

This documentary is a tribute to Vivian Maier, an unsung genius of urban photography. The accidental discovery of her work by real-estate agent John Maloof resulted in her posthumous recognition as one of the finest street photographers of the 20th century. Paying homage to her work as well as exploring the strange twists and turns of her life, this film is dense with images, interviews and revelations, painting a fitting and moving portrait of the artist.

CHEF (15)2, 5 & 6 AUGUST

Director: Jon Favreau. Starring: Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jnr, Scarlett Johansson, Dustin Hoffman, John Leguizamo, Oliver Platt. USA 2014. 114 mins.

When a critic tweets a scathing review, Carl explodes in an outpouring of rage that goes viral. Mouthwatering foodie scenes are matched by touching comedy drama in this deceptively profound story of family, friendship and artistic integrity.
