A Fall From Grace Adam Stone (VIC)

A young male sits at a skate park on his BMX bike. With some courage he initiates conversation with two female schoolgirls who are spectating. Both parties engage in a clumsy and flirtatious exchange. The prospect of his first sexual encounter looms. In a moment of clarity, the youth decides to perform his most recent and dangerous trick. Although nervously excited, he can constantly pull off the trick and maintains confidence in his ability. A miscalculation occurs and the youth puts out his foot to brace his fall - snapping his ankle. After a time, the females approach and enquire about his well being. Remaining calm, confident and maintaining the guise of masculinity, he replies simply; I broke my ankle.

The females walk away laughing.

These works are informed by found images and personal experience with extreme sport that are applied to the notion of the hero in classical sculpture. By extracting found images and transforming them into 3D forms I translate my/their failure into success. It becomes a monument. Schadenfreude, The Death Drive and spectacle are all parts of this process.

These monuments are both a celebration of failure in the pursuit of the near impossible and an archetypal representation of masculine drive.

Woman’s Work Kate Camm (NSW)

My work deals with the roles of a woman. Women are often categorised as either sexual or domestic, but why can’t we be both? These embroideries incorporate pornographic imagery through the use of the traditional technique of stitch to bring these ideas of a woman together.
