Y ..ou know what they say: Loca-tion, location, location. And that does make for a great
lifetime experience. This year’s Porsche Parade location made it extra special, as did the many tours and events that many (65!) of your fellow Mavericks enjoyed.
First of all, the weather! How about waking up to 55 degrees on June 16? Yes, it got a little warmer each day of the week, and by the end of the week we almost hit 77! Next: the driving tours. Driving down the Pacific Coast Highway to Big Sur – what a thrill (especially in a Porsche)! Next, the tour to the Hearst Castle (talk about wealth!), once again returning on the PCH (I’m trying to learn the California lingo). Then the tour to the Canepa Design car collection. Fabulous!
But wait . . . there’s more!
There were tours of the wine country, an Autocross competition, Art Show competition, a Time-Speed-Distance Rally, and a Gimmick Rally. The Autocross event is a favorite of your fellow Mavericks, and they won awards! A Drivers’ Education event on Saturday at a little track called Laguna Seca (if you’re not familiar with it, ask your child to show it to you on their Xbox driving game). And that’s where the grand finale took place with our Parade of Porsches.
There were banquets almost every night, where we ran into great friends from Porsche Clubs in other parts of North America (Canada and U.S.). We cheered our Mavericks on as they won awards in many, many categories: especially our Slipstream Editor, Carey Spreen, who walked away with three trophies!
Okay, my wonderful wife, Chris, insists that I share my personal embarrassment from this trip: While I was driving down the PCH on the tour to Big Sur, a California Highway Patrol car pulls out behind me. So, not knowing whether this stretch of the highway is 55 or 45 mph, I slow to 45 (as does the Porsche in front of me) to ensure I avoid a speeding ticket. So the officer gets on his P.A. and blares out: “This is a 55 mile-per-hour zone. Either speed up or pull over!” A POLICE OFFICER TELLING
ME TO SPEED UP!?! Well, as they say, there’s a first for everything.
Bottom line: it was a great event, a great drive (stayed in a Route 66 motel again), and we’ll do it again!
Mav of the MonthAs you may recall, my last month’s column was about
volunteering. This month, we celebrate one of our newest volunteers, Richard Solomon. Richard started coming to our monthly board meetings about six months ago, looking for a place where he could give back. He found his niche and has jumped in with both feet, helping to organize our September charity
event in Tyler, Texas. Richard lives in Tyler, but his banking job brings him to the D/FW area every week. Now we have a great event with a fun drive to support our charity cause.
So Richard: thank you. You have gone out of your way to bring something special to the club, and you set a great ex-ample of how one can be a contributor by attending and listening. Congratulations and enjoy your gift card to the Silver Fox restaurant in Grapevine!

As our summer hiatus contin-ues, I should remind you that ‘the Maverick Region typically
does not hold a July Board meet-ing due to the Porsche Parade and other vacations, so those of you who look forward to reading the Board Meeting minutes every month will
be disappointed with this issue. Rest assured that the Board re-convenes on Wednesday, August 6, and as always, all members are invited to attend! Our Board Meetings are held at the same central location each month: Hackberry Creek Country Club in Irving. If you would like dinner there too, it’s only $10 -- what a bargain. Just RSVP to [email protected] and our So-cial Chair Tracy Robertson can send you an invitation.
This issue has some catching up to do. You will find May and June Autocross and Time Trial results, as well as a column from Cliff Blackshear on the COTA Club Race, and of course, results from the Porsche Parade that took place in mid-June. Not all results, of course -- Porsche Panorama does a better job of that than we can -- just the results for Maverick Region.
Also in this issue is an invitation for you photogra-phers: our Tenured Historian, Charlie Davis (who has also been known to take a snapshot or two over the years) is offering a short course on what sort of photos we are looking for, to place on our website as well as Slipstream. It will happen at Park Place Porsche on Saturday, August 23, but please RSVP by August 8 so we can order the food (yes, lunch will be served!).
Perhaps you have wondered about the “save the date” ads that have appeared in the last couple of issues, featuring photos of a Porsche 908 race car. Well, the curtain is being pulled back this month; see Linda Bambina’s “Garage Glimpses” article on page 8 for details, but you won’t want to miss this truly unique event, to be held on Sunday, September 28.
Finally, at the risk of blowing my own horn, I wanted to let you know that Slipstream was awarded Second Place in Class V in the National Newsletter Contest at the Porsche Parade. W.hen I spoke up I quickly “got volunteered” to take charge of my issue. We have many
members interested in photography. I thought, “Let’s take that interest, give them some training, a little competi-tion, and increase our good photo content . . . plus have a little fun.”
Thankfully, I signed up some enthusiastic assistants, especially the dynamic duo of Tracy Robertson and Linda Bambina, who can organize anything. And soon there was a big committee that meets monthly to get this thing rolling.
Our initial task was to investigate how other Regions go about this. The answer was quickly apparent: They have a yearly photo competition. So we scheduled a Photo Contest in conjunction with our Founder’s Day Banquet. Next, how to get entries in the contest?
Again, the answer was apparent: This led to our first-ever Photo Workshop being scheduled at Park Place Porsche in Dallas. See the ad below for details.

Workshops like this normally cost multi-$100. It’s free to members, as we hope to inspire you to become a part of our cadre of photographers. We need your talent, and promise to make it fun and loaded with informa-tion. Be sure to bring your camera!

As I am always looking for interesting garages to bring ‘to this page, I ask for sug-
gestions. Richard Solomon, a new member from Tyler, had been in-volved financing an unusual garage in Tyler belonging to another new member, Billy Hibbs. The more I
heard, the more intrigued I became. Adventure! My husband Alan and I drove the two hours to arrive at a French BARN known as Le Auto Grange. While Billy has some AMAZING “other” cars, my focus (literally!) was on his Porsche factory 908 short tail coupe, all eight cylinders, gull wing doors, crazy license plate, original race memorabilia, and much more. But Billy wasn’t interested in an article about himself or his cars. He wanted to send some kids, who otherwise couldn’t afford to go, to Tyler Junior College (TJC) to study Automotive Technology.
In order to do that, an endowed scholarship in honor of a fellow named Ron Wakefield is being created. Wakefield, who graduated from Mineola High School (just north of Tyler) in 1957, became the Engineering Editor for Road and Track magazine in 1965, and its Editor in 1972. Billy refers to this as the “golden era of automotive journalism,” when most enthusiasts consumed every magazine copy and hung on every word in the age prior to the Internet.
“I had no idea the guy doing the tests and writing the articles went to high school with my mother,” Billy says. TJC has one of the best automotive training centers in the country, and “The Ron Wakefield Scholarship in Automotive Technology” will allow some deserving young gearhead to pursue a lu-crative career as a highly-credentialed mechanic.
To fund this scholarship, Billy is opening up Le Auto Grange to 175 lucky PCA members who will receive lunch and a tour of the facility, as well as the op-portunity to participate in a silent auction, and even have their photo taken while sitting in the 908!
Ron Wakefield, who lives in San Diego, will be there to tell the club about his experiences testing some of the very first Porsches in America, and what it was like in the Sixties driving every cool exotic car you can imagine. According to Billy, Mr. Wakefield is also one of the nicest guys you could ever meet, and is truly a walking encyclopedia of automotive history.
But wait! There’s more! Billy reached out to famous Porsche factory driver Vic Elford to see if he would be willing to join the conversation. He drove the same 908 (which Billy now owns) in the Austrian Grand Prix, aka the 500 km Zeltweg, back in 1968. Mr. Elford has accepted the invitation, which should make this one of the most interesting Porsche events in club history!
There will be an auction to raise money for the Mav-erick’s Regional Charity, the Hope House in Mineral Wells. Vic Elford will be donating some unique items for that auction, and Slipstream advertiser Maurice Efune of Ascot Diamonds has generously donated a piece of women’s jewelry (worth $1,500) to the Hope House cause. You can also have your picture made with Vic or Ron or sitting in the 908 if you’ll just “open your heart and your wallet and give Hope House the big-gest bill you’ve got!” However, please note: for security reasons, NO personal photography will be allowed.
Here are the details:
• Sunday, September 28, 12:30-4:30pm, in Tyler, TX. After lunch there will be presentations from TJC, Ron Wakefield, and Vic Elford, followed by a Silent Auction, and the opportunity to have yourself
photographed in the Porsche 908 shown below. Directions to the event will be provided once you register.
• Ticket price: $75 per person, with $50 being tax deductible for the TJC Scholarship Fund, and the balance covering lunch and valet parking.

My daughter took the shot below at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in May. I was there working in Tech Inspection, a task I have been enjoying locally at the Maverick gig for a little over a decade. I have found that I absolutely love this task, as it gives me a really
unusual perspective of the entire event. I’m a natural born observer, always watching others to see how they deal with moment-to-moment events.
It was an interesting experience having multiple cars sent to “Scales” after a heavily-contested qualifying session on a near 100 degree day at Eagles Canyon a few years ago. I was immediately sympathetic for the drivers. Their cool suit systems were running out of ice. They were covered in sweat. Their dispositions when arriving ran the gamut. Some were unhappy with the stint’s outcome. Possibly angry with another driver, disappointed with their personal effort, concerned about a mechanical issue, it could be many things. Some were completely relaxed, tired and happy.
As drivers exit the track, a sign is put up saying “Scales” or something else that sends them my way. I want to make this go quickly for them: have ready a bottle of water for each driver; roll them over the scale efficiently; simply try to help in every way. Yet it is important to make sure everyone is legal for their class – and more importantly – safe. If we are check-ing safety equipment I become most interested.
I have been involved in repairing the cars after a bad shunt more than once. To see the damage
to a car and to have the driver stand there tell-ing me about what happened is interesting. I see the car and my little technician mind considers the amount of impact damage, g-forces involved, and how well the safety equipment worked. This really hit me a few years ago at Sebring.
I was there helping a group of our Mav Tex Spec Box folks. I wrote extensively about that event in a previous column. I have to say that looking at Thomas Jones’ car that day really hit me hard about safety require-ment mandates. He was simply standing there next to the car ready to help get it repaired for the next day – the whole left side ripped off. Major front end impact damage as well. A mark on the seat halo from debris, just inches from where his head had been. That cage, net, seat integrity, harness anchoring – and in that situation I strongly believe the arm restraints – were very active participants in his well-being. In this case the crash was due to no error on his part. Yet it happened and he walked away unharmed.
Moving on . . .
You know what is the best part of working Tech? It is meeting so many cool people. My daughter went nuts when this driver (above) came through inspection. Remember Atari? If you do not, I bet you have kids that do.
The drivers’ meetings are always interesting. Track conditions are usually discussed. Any spe-cific concerns a driver may have can arise in the meetings: questions about which sprint estab-lishes points, or starting positions usually come up. I find that the folks at the podium are work-ing hard to keep everyone safe and informed.

Going through the rigors of a Club Race Tech Inspection
Interaction at every level can be fun to observe. Just look at these three characters (below). I use that term with great fondness for these folks.
Everyone helps everyone. If someone breaks down and needs an unusual part, everybody that sees their dilemma will do anything to help find the part. Or if an extra hand or tool is needed, that is not a problem. If a driver is struggling with a certain corner at the track, trying to find a better entry, or possibly enter-taining a car setup change to remedy the issue, people are ready to give away valuable information and help them be quicker. Ok, most of the time that happens.
Tires are always an interesting subject at the track. Track temperatures have so much impact. I have watched folks hone a set into the “sweet spot” dur-ing practice, then remove the wheel/tire set, and put them aside for the most important race, with pressures noted down to the 1/10 (or less) psi. Then on race day, the conditions can be so different that suddenly the car does not rotate on command, ro-tates way too much with input, or perhaps the driver overheats them chasing someone, and they go away completely losing proper grip. Warming the tires up and maintaining them during the race is so pivotal to
a good finish. I have seen someone managing a driver, sending him out over and over again on marginal tires, making him get his best under those condi-tions, with the serious good-grip tires set aside. Seat time under adverse conditions, observed and timed, calculating this into a race. It made sense to me.
At the end of a race day, everyone goes home and simply salivates for the next “Hot track/cars on course warm up session.” It is so much about that release of all else in life and just concentrating on doing something exhilarating. Something on the maximum edge of concentration, something requiring study, care about detail, preparation, and ultimately execution of all involved down to millisecond decisions on the track.
It feels like a great big family at the track to me.

My Mom and Step-Dad sent
me over to France in 1969 to stay with his parents
for a while. They thought, correctly, that it would be a great cultural experience (it was), and I might learn a think or two (I did). Who knows, I might even learn to speak French (I did that too). I had met them one time each in ’68 when they came over to check out this American woman and boy who had married into the family. They were nice; they brought me presents and a lot of treats. I finished my school year, and my parents promptly put me on a Boeing 707 (by myself no less) and sent me over the pond.
My Step-Dad worked for TWA, so I got to fly first class. Back then there was probably a thick fog of cigarette smoke and worldly Jet Setters sitting up near the front of the plane. But on that jet I was a star, a brave little kid travelling by himself. The Stewardesses (yes back then they were called Stewardess) swooned and fawned over me the whole flight over. If only I had been 10 years older . . . but it is doubtful that they would have spread the same affections for a scruffy teen. But a nine-year-old? Man it was great -- an endless supply of Coca-Cola and a smile.
Arriving at the Paris Orly airport, some nice lady took me through customs into the arrival area AND there was nobody there to meet me. I immediately started crying; I want-ed to go home. The poor woman did not know what to do. Then, off
in the distance we heard a noise, someone shouting my name. I looked and saw two tiny legs run-ning as fast as they could in heels. It reminded me of a short terrier dog; that fast, frantic, almost stiff motion. As she came closer I could see she was crying too. It was my Mameé. I ran to her and hugged her tight. There had been an accident on the highway and she was stuck in traffic. She was sorry she was late. Relieved, the woman handed her my documents and we left.
She drove a white Renault 8. This tiny French sedan was slow and boxy -- it felt little even to me. She opened up the hood and dropped my baggage inside. Where was the motor, I asked her? In the rear, she said. The windows did not roll down in the back; they slid side to side . . . but only part ways. I thought that was strange. But she drove it with such verve, rowing the spindly gear lever and stomp-ing on the throttle. It was like she was asking the car to give her everything it had . . . too bad it did not have very much to begin with.
We arrived at their flat in Paris, although to call it a flat or apart-ment did not do it justice. It took
up the whole floor of a Mid-19th Century building. It was in le 7`eme (7th) Arrondissement in Paris. From what I understand, it is like a tony Park Ave New York address, but nicer, much nicer. They had whole wings they did not even use. They had maids that cooked, maids that cleaned, even maids that cooked and cleaned for the other maids. It was pretty posh . . .
Every morning I had breakfast with my Papa on the balcony over-looking the Champs du Mars with the Tour de Eiffel as our backdrop. I had absolutely no clue how good I had it. To duplicate that life style today would cost something very close to a third world country’s entire GDP. Ahh, Papa – the Boss, the Dictator, the Commander in Chief, a captain of French industry, he knew it all. And if he did not, it was such a triviality that it simply did not matter. He had married Mameé in 1935 and she came with a dowry of $1M (in 1935 dollars; $17.3M today!). He took that money and made a fortune. His company manufactured most of the commercial typeset for the French market. And he sold it for a huge profit before he retired and typeset went electronic (he was no dummy either; he knew a massive change in the market was coming). When Papa spoke or made a pronounce-ment (which he frequently did) everyone took note, or with natural Gallic disdain, at least pretended to.
And . . . he had this crazy car (you knew I would get around to it at some point, right?). It was a 1967 Chevy Chevelle SS 396 convertible with white body, white top, and a red interior. It was loud and fast, and for France at that time, such an “in your face” statement. It was Papa’s way of thumbing his very large Gallic nose at French automo-

tive common sense. It screamed money, as in “I can afford the gas and you can’t.” He would drive it one-half a block to the Tabac for some cigarettes or a paper, leave the car running outside and then drive the half-block back. He loved that car; it was so . . . American. And of course I drove with him the whole half-block, both ways.
I gotta say though: I was terrified of the man. He had this deep gravelly voice and such a stern look. He always wore a suit, even at dinner, and when he spoke to me I listened closely for fear I might forget something he said. Later in the summer, Mameé told me that I would have to drive with him (by myself) from Cannes back to Paris. I was mortified. To keep me placated, he sat a whole bag of Bon-bons in my lap and told me to have as many as I wanted. As
he chained smoked our way back to Paris, I ate piece after piece.

Pulling over to the shoulder of the highway, Papa quickly got out of the car and walked around to the passenger side. He literally pulled me up and over the door (since of course the convertible top was down AND, as you can imagine, there were no seatbelts) and gave me one huge open handed slap on the back. It dislodged the candy and sent it flying to the ground,
breaking into tiny shards. I took a deep breath and started crying. He hugged me tenderly telling me everything was going to be okay. He also suggested that maybe, just may-be, try not to eat the lemon ones.
I looked up to him with tears in my eyes and knew everything was going to be fine. Looking at his watch, he said we needed to move tres vite (very fast) or we would be late for dinner back in Paris. He hated being late for dinner . . .
The Chevelle shot forward once again, it’s mighty 396 cu in. V-8 engine screaming its brutal song. But for the rest of the trip to Paris, I left the rest of the candy in the bag. Better not to press one’s luck too much . . . . And we did make it on time for dinner.

A California Porsche ‘Parade is
always a little differ-ent from a Parade in any other part of the country. Perhaps it’s the
weather, or the scenery, or the car-oriented culture that the Left Coast seems to encourage, but more likely it’s the fact that there are Porsches present at a California Parade that you will not see anywhere else. The Golden State seems to be where old Porsches go, not to die, but to live on, and even have a second child-hood.
It is still not all that unusual to see 356s and 912s driven on the streets, and even in autocross events, where 914s still hold their own. Vintage Porsche race car collections dot the California landscape like windmills and oil wells permeate Texas.
The 2014 edition of the Porsche Pa-rade, held in and around Monterey, was no exception to the California Parade “rule.” In spite of the dis-tance from Maverick Region (over 1600 miles), more than 60 members of our region attended. Not only that, but many of us competed and won!
So herewith, accompanying a few photos of the Parade, are the results for events in which Mavericks (and a few others) showed their stuff!

Back In May I attended the Auto-
cross Academy, and a week later my first Autocross, and my life will never be the
same! The Autocross Academy, is designed to let you experience what your car is designed for and what its limits are. It also gives you a firm foundation for what cars can and can’t do on the road, so if you ever get in a tight spot you can handle it. We practiced braking
without locking the wheels, know-ing where the corners of your car are so you can negotiate a slalom course, and most fun -- using the throttle to control your steering on a skid pad. To borrow a phrase from reigning Autocross queen Wendy Shoffit: “It’s the most fun you can have with your clothes on!”
The next weekend I attended a full Autocross: no exercises, just driving! Travis and Robyn have this thing down to a science. You arrive, get signed in, have your car inspect-ed, and get in line to do your timed
runs. It’s amazing to watch the first group of Autocrossers negotiate the course and then make refinements after each circuit to end up several seconds faster on their final run!
The best part is the camaraderie of the competitors. Some of them have it in their blood and have been racing for twenty or more years. Others are newer to the sport, but however long they have been Autocrossing, they welcome newcomers with open arms and are excited to share this fantastically fun sport!

Our Maverick Region Raffle for a one-year lease on the all-new
Porsche Macan S was drawn at the All Member Party in January of this year. The winners, Kyle and Debbie
Fahrenthold, had purchased the winning ticket just 20 minutes before the drawing!
Shortly after they won, they custom-ordered their 2015 Porsche Macan S from sponsor Autobahn Porsche in Fort Worth. After several months of waiting for the newest model from Porsche (which is being called the big brother to the 911) to be built and arrive, they were presented with their new Macan S on Satur-day, July 5 at the dealership. Congratulations Kyle and Debbie!

June’s Maverick Social was an-
other blast. I’m not sure how many showed up, but it was a bunch; I’m guessing 50 or so. BJ’s in Plano did a great job with
hospitality and everyone had a great time.
The cool thing I keep noticing is more and more new members. And they keep coming back! That speaks volumes about how friendly (and social) our members are. I don’t remember seeing so many new faces and stick-on nametags since Barbie and I were newbies over a year ago. Stephanie did a great job of improvising with Post-Its to label attendees.
What I’m really looking forward to seeing though, is everyone showing up with a genuine, official, honest-
to-goodness Maverick Region nametag. You can get them at mav.clubstore.us.com for only 14 bucks. They are super slick and come with a magnetic attachment so you don’t have to punch holes in your favor-ite Porsche shirt just to wear a nam-etag. You can put your name, where
you live, and you can list up to two, count ‘em two, of your Porsches right on the tag! How cool is that? It’s a great conversation starter. And before you ask: no, I’m not getting a piece of the action. However, all
donations are accepted. The 968 could use a new exhaust system.
Here’s a challenge: let’s shoot for
getting 75 attendees next time at the Whiskey Cake Kitchen and Bar. Everyone call their Porsche loving buds and get them in the game. Maybe we’ll run out of nametags and Stephanie will have to break out the Post-Its again!
