"Jesus said to his disciples: 'As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my command‐ments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love. (J. 15:9‐10)"' Many Orthodox Jews study the Commandments for hours on a daily basis. They do this because they believe that the Commandments are the link between God and them. The Commandments are like a road map to understanding the mind of God and His will. For them, Commandments are not a problem but something they love. The Commandments give them identity. In today's Gospel Jesus emphasizes that when we keep the Commandments we remain in His love. By keeping the Commandments we show God that we love Him. So, what are the Commandments we need to keep: The Ten Commandments: 1. I am the Lord thy God, thou shall not have any gods before me. 2. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. 3. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 4. Honor your father and your mother. 5. You shall not murder. 6. You shall not commit adultery. 7. You shall not steal. 8. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 9. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. 10. You shall not covet your neighbor's goods. Jesus' two Commandments about love: Jesus was asked: "Which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on to these two commandments. (Mt 22:36‐40)” Jesus said: "You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you that you may be sons of your Father in heaven (Mt 5:42‐45) " The decision of the Council of Jerusalem: The Apostle James said about the Gentile Christians: "my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath. (Act 15:19‐21)" By reciting these daily they become more part of who we are. At the end of the day, we can meditate on them, one by one, and examine ourselves as to how we are doing with them. And, when we do this with love... We remain in God.

Peace and goodness,

Rev. Michal Lewon

3. Recuerda el día de reposo manteniéndolo santo. 4. Honra a tu padre y a tu madre. 5. No matarás. 6. No cometerás adulterio. 7. No robarás. 8. No darás falso testimonio contra tu prójimo. 9. No codiciarás la mujer de tu prójimo. 10.

 Paz y bondad,

Rev. Michal Lewon Pastor

Chicago Catholic: Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Renew My Church: Going out on a limb

April 25, 2018 People who study the etymology of words have mixed opinions on the phrase “going out on a limb.” Some say it means taking a risky chance or hazarding a guess. The point being that the further you go out on a limb the weaker the branch becomes, thus increasing the risk of being wrong or failing. Others suggest the original meaning of this term refers to the effort that it takes to go against the status quo, em-barking on a path that others would avoid or could not imagine taking. That second sense is how I often think of what Jesus meant when he told Simon Peter: “Put out into the deep wa-ter and let down your nets for a catch” (Lk 5:4). Jesus wasn’t being capricious or impulsive. Rather, he was calling for bold action, even if it meant going against the grain, doing the unimaginable, undaunted by challenges that would other-wise give way to excuses. We hear that kind of hesitation and excuse-making in Peter’s voice as he responds: “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing.” Jesus is calling him to have confidence in the catch, in what is to be gained, knowing that the status quo has exhausted the possibilities for moving forward. With Renew My Church we are indeed going out on a limb, putting out into the deep. It has been pointed out that most diocesan renewal efforts either take up the task of spiritual growth or organizational reform, but not both at once. We, in fact, are doing both. For some, this is risky. No one has done this before. We are, indeed, building this effort from the ground up. But I am convinced that unless we take up both of these tasks together, our renewal will be short-lived and just another footnote in the history of the archdiocese. If we reform our institutional structures without a profound spiritual renewal or take up spiritual reform with no attention to how we organize our communities and ministries, we will be missing a chance to achieve long-term sustainability of our parishes. As we move forward, it will be our three imperatives that will steady our steps on this new path. Our aim is to make disciples, build communities and inspire witness. Amid all the twists and turns in the road ahead, it will be im-portant to keep our eyes focused on these three priorities. You have heard me reference Pope Francis often as I looked for ways to describe the vision of Renew My Church. He surely continues to offer us a great deal of inspiration as we take up this work. I highly recommend his latest apostolic exhortation, “Gaudete et Exsultate.” However, I still have fresh in my memory a papal document that was written in the first years after I became a bishop. I was greatly encouraged by it. At the end of the Great Jubilee Year 2000, Pope St. John Paul II issued his apostolic letter “Novo Millennio Ine-unte.” He did so at a time when his health was already in serious decline and he knew he would not live long into the new millennium. Yet he called the entire church, especially dioceses, local churches, to put out into the deep in this significant moment of human history. His words were youthful and filled with energy as he challenged us to design new pastoral approaches that would give fresh vigor to the mission of the church. This is what he wrote: “Now is the time for each local church to assess its fervor and find fresh enthusiasm for its spiritual and pastoral responsibilities, by reflecting on what the Spirit has been saying to the people of God in this special year of grace, and indeed in the longer span of time from the Second Vatican Council to the Great Jubilee. … It is in the local churches that the specific features of a detailed pastoral plan can be identified — goals and methods, formation and enrichment of the people involved, the search for the necessary resources — which will enable the proclamation of Christ to reach people, mold communities, and have a deep and incisive influence in bringing Gospel values to bear in society and culture.” He called us to be bold, imaginative and to approach the future with daring and courage. Notice that, as he urges new methods and the realignment of resources, he identifies three goals, the same three we have placed at the heart of Renew My Church: “to enable the proclamation of Christ to reach people (make disciples), mold communities (build communities) and have a deep and incisive influence in bringing Gospel values to bear in society and culture (inspire witness).” In concluding his letter, the saintly yet aging pontiff returned to the scene in Luke’s Gospel and pressed us to put out into the deep “‘Duc in altum.’ Let us go forward in hope! A new millennium is opening before the church like a vast ocean upon which we shall venture, relying on the help of Christ.” We are going out on a limb with Renew My Church, not as reckless thrill-seekers, but as those who see the great potential ahead of us as the Spirit leads us forward. It is, as Papa Wojtyła, observed, out of a faith that a vast ocean is opening before us, that we take up this venture together, ever relying on the guidance of Christ. Sunday, May 6, 2018 - Saints Marian and James - d. May 259 "Saints Marian, an ordained lector, and James, a deacon, were martyred during the persecution of Valerian around the year 259. Few other facts are known about them. It seems that while they were in prison, each had a vision regarding his martyrdom. They drew courage from these apparitions and were able to courageously face death. They were joined in their deaths by other Christians." Monday, May 7, 2018 - Saint Rose Venerini - d. 1728 Rose was born at Viterbo in Italy, the daughter of a doctor. Following the death of her fiancé she entered a convent, but soon returned home to care for her newly widowed mother. Meanwhile, Rose invited the women of the neighborhood to recite the rosary in her home, forming a sort of sodality with them. As she looked to her future under the spiritual guidance of a Jesuit priest, Rose became convinced that she was called to become a teacher in the world rather than a contemplative nun in a convent. Clearly, she made the right choice: She was a born teacher, and the free school for girls she opened in 1685 was well received. Soon the cardinal invited her to oversee the training of teachers and the administration of schools in his diocese of Montefiascone... She died in Rome in 1728, where a number of miracles were attributed to her. The sodality, or group of women she had invited to prayer, was ultimately given the rank of a religious congregation. Today, the so-called Venerini Sisters can be found in the United States and elsewhere, working among Italian immigrants. Wednesday, May 9, 2018 - Saint John of Avila - d. 1569 Born in the Castile region of Spain, John was sent at the age of 14 to the University of Salamanca to study law. He later moved to Alcala, where he studied philosophy and theology before his ordination as a diocesan priest. After John’s parents died and left him as their sole heir to a considerable fortune, he distributed his money to the poor. In 1527, he traveled to Seville, hoping to become a missionary in Mexico. The archbishop of that city persuaded him to stay and spread the faith in Andalusia. During nine years of work there, he developed a reputation as an engaging preacher, a perceptive spiritual director, and a wise confessor... He was friends with Saints Francis Borgia, Ignatius of Loyola, John of God, John of the Cross, Peter of Alcantara, and Teresa of Avila. John of Avila worked closely with members of the Society of Jesus and helped their growth within Spain and its colonies. John’s mystical writings have been translated into several languages. Thursday, May 10th, 2018 - Damien de Veuster of Moloka’i - d. 1889 "When Joseph de Veuster was born in Tremelo, Belgium, in 1840, few people in Europe had any firsthand knowledge of leprosy, Hansen’s disease... They knew that human compassion could soften the ravages of this disease. Forced to quit school at age 13 to work on the family farm, Joseph entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary six years later, taking the name of a fourth-century physician and martyr. When his brother Pamphile, a priest in the same congregation, fell ill and was unable to go to the Hawaiian Islands as assigned, Damien quickly volunteered in his place. In May 1864, two months after arriving in his new mission, Damien was ordained a priest in Honolulu and assigned to the island of Hawaii. In 1873, he went to the Hawaiian government’s leper colony on the island of Moloka’i, set up seven years earlier... Damien soon volunteered to remain permanently, caring for the people’s physical, medical, and spiritual needs. In time, he became their most effective advocate to obtain promised government support. Soon the settlement had new houses and a new church, school and orphanage. Morale improved considerably. A few years later, he succeeded in getting the Franciscan Sisters of Syracuse... to help staff this colony in Kalaupapa. Damien contracted Hansen’s disease and died of its complications..." PADS Ministry

Dear St Colette Parishioners, Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor. Proverbs 22:9 This weekend our PADS ministry served our first guests. This was possible because of the generosity of our community. Thank you so much for your donations. As you know, persons are experiencing homelessness in our community at an alarming rate. In the past, during the summer months they would go without proper food and shelter every evening. Homeless persons would spend all night outside, in the rain, cold, heat. Exposed to dangers, hiding in corners, becoming invisible. St. Colette Parish is part of the change, and we are making a difference in the lives of our guests. With the generous support of our community we are helping many families and individuals by providing a safe, cool, dry, welcoming environment, a comfortable place to rest and sleep, and 3 meals. And with your enduring support we will be able to give dignity to those without homes this summer. Thank you again, and we look forward to your continued support.

Sincerely, St Colette PADS Ministry Team

Notes from the Music Director This past Friday, we celebrated Confirmation in our par‐ish. I was inspired by Bishop Rojas’ homily and wanted

to reach out to the newly confirmed members of our church through our weekly bulletin. Congratulations on achieving this new milestone in your faith journey. As Bishop stated, this is only the beginning, not the end. God has so much in store for you, and we, the St. Colette community, are praying for your continued growth. There are a num‐ber of ministries you can involve yourselves in to continue to nurture your faith, from Ministers of Care, Eucharistic Ministers, to the Music Ministry or Share Faith, etc. Your talents are needed and appreciated wherever you decide to volunteer your time. As you approach each day, know that God is by your side, and within your heart. When you have difficult decisions to make, lean on him to guide your actions – do not feel the pressure of the outside world, as you are “in” the world but not of “of” this world. Ask God to not just guide you but armor you with His word and passion for life and love, pray for those who wor‐ship death, and use your hands and feet to cultivate good in the world. You can do anything with Christ by your side. God bless you all. You've inspired us to take a look at our own faith journey through all the changes in the church. God bless you all.

A Prayer For “Renew My Church” Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly, to listen to each other attentively, to imagine our future boldly, to discern your direction wisely, to persevere in your holy will coura-geously, to stay together in charity, to surren-der our own plans readily, to embrace the greater good, to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy com-pany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apos-tles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the uni-ty of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen
