Eleanor Roosevelt is shrouded in stereotypes: she was FDR’s eyes and ears, an idealist who did not do or understand policy, a woman scorned who sought the public’s love, and many more.

All are convenient hooks to put this complex, influential woman in a box — and one that strips her of her vision, power, and influence.

In this presentation, leading Roosevelt historian, Allida Black, will discuss Eleanor Roosevelt as both a domestic and an international power broker: from her early days as an activist, to

her days as a member of the U.S. United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

This advanced Titanic class will focus on various areas of the historic sinking that are rarely discussed in “introductory” explanations, offering more detail and additional Titanic facts and elements not usually explored (often because of time constraints) The talk will include a de-tailed analysis of how the ship flooded and why she sank in the manner she did, including the final phase where the ship broke in two. It will also incorporate changes made to Titanic’s “sister ships” – Olympic and Britannic – in the light of the disaster and why these measures were ultimately ineffective in preventing Britannic sinking after striking a mine in the Aegean.

James Madison’s years in the White House actually diminished his political reputation. Madi-son was one of the architects of the United States Constitution, creating its structure out of his study of political philosophy from the ancient Greeks and Romans through the Enlighten-ment, but more importantly through the understanding of politics earned in the brawls of the Virginia legislature. He understood ambition and corruption, and so rather than design a sys-tem for high-minded statesmen, he shaped one for people as they are. A shy and timid speaker, Madison lived his political life in the shadow of others: Thomas Jefferson, whom Madison served as a faithful lieutenant (though John Adams thought Madison’s ideas were sounder than his mentors); Alexander Hamilton, his Federalist co-author and later chief politi-cal opponent (a French observer said that Madison was “less brilliant” than Hamilton, but “more profound”); Patrick Henry, whom Madison challenged both in the Virginia ratifying con-vention and the state legislature (where Madison succeeded in getting the Statute for Reli-gious Freedom passed over Henry’s opposition); and even his vivacious and charismatic wife, Dolley Payne Todd Madison, known during his term in the White House as “The Presi-dentess.” (In fact, during the War of 1812 the British boasted of capturing Dolley—not her husband—and parading her through the streets of London.) In this lecture, Professor Allison will explore some of Madison’s most important political writings—on religious freedom, the structure of the union, freedom of the press, and the nature of power—and ponder this un-likely politician who understood politics—then and now—better than we do.

AMERICAN PRESIDENTS: THE BEST, THE WORST, AND ALL THE REST Saturdays, May 15 and 22 - 2-5pm

Human beings store away huge quantities of information in memory. We remember countless facts about the world (e.g., birds have wings, 2+2=4, there are 26 letters in the alphabet) as well specific information about our own lives (e.g., what we had for lunch, where we went for our last vacation, our first kiss). We remember how to tie our shoes, how to ride a bike, and how to write our signature. Most of the time we retrieve information from this enormous data-base of memory so efficiently and effectively that we don’t even give it a second thought. But how does that work? How do we store information away into memory and then retrieve exact-ly the information we need minutes, days, or even years later? Conversely, why do we so often forget someone’s name or where we put our keys? And perhaps most importantly, is there anything we can do to improve our memory and keep it sharp?

This course will address all those questions and many more. We’ll dive into the psychological and neural mechanisms that underlie our amazing ability to remember. We’ll discover that we’re actually equipped with multiple different memory systems that are specialized for re-membering different types of information. We’ll learn about factors that can have a dramatic impact on memory, such as motivation, emotion, and aging. And we’ll also discuss ways to maximize our memory by applying techniques that have been scientifically demonstrated to improve retention. After taking this course, you’ll have a new appreciation for the extremely powerful memory mechanisms in your own brain and a better understanding of how to use

them most effectively.

Around 1503, Leonardo da Vinci began painting a portrait of a Florentine noblewoman named Lisa Gherardini. The work became so important to him that it remained in his possession until he died in 1519. Half a millennia later, the “Mona Lisa” is considered not only a masterpiece of Renaissance portraiture, but also the most famous painting in all of Western art. In this lecture, Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan explains the work’s enduring appeal by looking closely at its remarkable details, and its equally remarkable history.

U.S. presidents are evaluated in many ways, and this fascinating, timely and unique 2-part program will discuss nearly all of them. The major characteristics that academic and public polls use vary from survey to survey, but the main standards remain consistent. It is important to keep in mind that time changes what people consider critical characteristics, and presiden-tial rankings reflect this. For example, early in U.S. history, the United States was isolationist, so foreign policy wasn’t a factor in presidential evaluations. Foreign policy became much more important in the 20th century.
