Ken Nelson was 10-years-old when he was placed at Epworth Children’sHome. Ken was hoping to find a place where he could feel safe. Where hebelonged. A place where he would know what to expect from day to day.

Although from day one at Epworth, he found fellow students that gave him comfort, it took the months that followed that first day to feel security. But security did come.Trust did come. The feeling of self worth did come.

It was the simple things that are often taken for granted that gave him peace.“When you didn’t have any control in your life or a sense of safety,” says Ken, things like meals and shelter provide a feeling of safety.

Over time, Ken found not only the “sacred worth” he needed but that peoplebelieved in him and were invested in his life. Over the six years he spent at Epworth,Ken’s foundation for his eventual path to becoming a United Methodist Minister camefrom a pastor who worked at Epworth. Interestingly, it wasn’t the pastor’s preaching onthe love of God that spoke to Ken. It was the time out of the pulpit, talking with himabout ‘real stuff.’ Ken says, “He didn’t just talk about love, he demonstrated love.”

Pastor Ken firmly believes “every child who comes to Epworth will know thatthey have been loved and cared about by someone – that they have value, and I thinkthat makes all the difference in helping people to find their way on their journey.”

Epworth Children’s Home’s goal is to nurture and love children from brokenhomes, providing them with residential care, educational assistance, counseling services, medical attention and spiritual enrichment. Each year, nearly 80% of the general operatingbudget to provide care to the children comes from the generous giving of United Methodistcongregations and individuals. When you make a gift to Epworth, you are ensuring eachchild receives the basics of food and shelter, but more importantly, your gift serves toprovide a campus pastor for spiritual direction, counseling and therapy staff, educationaltutors and cottage parents who guide each child through his or her journey.

In 2008, Shandon designated Epworth as one of our two “Signature Ministries.”Let’s continue Shandon’s partnership with the children of Epworth by giving generouslyto this year’s Mother’s Day offering on Sunday, May 11th.

SHANDON BOOK CLUB DISCUSSIONMay 7, 6:00-7:00 p.m., Bruner 221

The First Phone Call from Heaven, by Mitch AlbomMitch Albom’s newest and most anticipated book reminds us of the omnipresence of heaven and how thehuman soul is never forgotten, even after death. It’s a riveting thriller that makes us think, feel, hope, doubt, and then have faith. This fantasy tale about a town where people receive phone calls from their relatives inheaven is beautiful and smart, perhaps the most stirring heaven story ever. It’s a riveting thriller that makes usthink, feel, hope, doubt, and then have faith.

Discussing what you read is an easy enjoyable way to get to know people on a deeper level. Come join the conversation! Shandon’s Book Club meets on first Wednesdays, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in Bruner 221. To be on the Book Club mailing list, contact Anne Cox at church.
