Government and LocalAuthorities Must do More

for Youghal BeachesSinn Fein Councillor, Martin Hallinan has called on the govern-ment and the local authorities to be more proactive in promotingYoughal beaches as safe, environmentally friendly, and attractivefor visitors.Reacting to the recent EP A "Quality of Bathing Report"Councillor Hallinan said that "if Youghal is to regain its deservedblue flag status then both the government and the local authoritiesare going to have to be a lot more proactive in promoting theYoughal and adjoining beaches as safe, environmentally friendlyand attractive to visitors.""Last year 1 put a motion before Cork County Council calling forurgent action on upgrading the sewage system. I pointed out thatwe had long past the deadline of 2006 for works to be done to meetEU requirements. The existing system was and is totally inade-quate to cope with the expanding population of Youghal with direconsequences for the residents of Gallagher’s Terrace and withpotential consequences for our beaches. Yet the government wereslow in allocating the funds and there appeared to be a certain lackof urgency on behalf of Cork County Council.""Unfortunately the chickens have now come home to roost. TheMinister and the County Manager should now approach this crisiswith considerably more urgency and fast-track the whole processof providing a new sewage system."I have been campaigning formany years for adequate and accessible toilet facilities by thebeach. I note that one week after the EPA report, Youghal TownCouncil failed to open the toilets at Claycastle on the May BankHoliday. One of the requirements for Blue Flag status is"Adequate and clean sanitary facilities with controlled sewage dis-posal. The government and the local authorities must take theirhead out of the sand. Providing basic facilities must be seen not asa burden but as an integral part of making the best of what naturehas given us. Youghal people are naturally proud of the fine coast-line we have. The authorities must play their part in ensuring thatit is kept in pristine condition and attractive to both visitors andtowns people alike."

Youghal Choral Society would like to say a big thank you to allwho helped make their concert on the 13th April at the Mall ArtsCentre such a resounding success. To the Carrigaline Singers,Midleton Male Voice Choir, Childrens Choir, Frank Ryan (Tenor),Geraldine Harty, Una Whyte, Pat Lynch (Story Teller), Membersof Cobh/McCarthy Pipe Band.To Tracy Symmons for the music,to Jean Healy who tended the door, to Chris Bailey who did a won-derful job as M.C.The proceeds of the concert went to the NationalCouncil of the Blind (local branch). Thank you all very much.

Olly Casey, Treasurer and members of The Youghal Choral Society present acheque of 1001.00 to Betty Hennessy and Mary Morrisson representing TheNational Council For The Blind, Youghal Branch at The Methodist Hall, Friar St.proceeds from the successful concert held at the Mall Arts Centre last April

STANTON SEEKS URGENTIMPROVEMENTS TO

YOUGHAL LANDFILL SITEDavid Stanton, Fine Gael TD for Cork East last week raised theissue of Youghal Landfill with the Minister for Environment,Heritage and Local Government in Dail Eireann last week.Deputy Stanton has asked the Minister take action to address theconcerns of local residents who have been suffering through ongo-ing problems with the landfill."I have approached Cork County Council and the EnvironmentalProtection Agency and the Department of Environment, Heritageand Local Government on a number of occasions but no concreteaction has been taken. Local people living near the landfill aresuffering terribly as a result of the noxious smells in the locality.Deputy Stanton was advised by the Minister that over the last 12months, Cork County Council have taken a number of measure toaddress the issue of odours from the site. These include theintroduction of an odour neutralising system and the provision ofgas extraction walls in active cells. Unfortunately, these measureshave been largely ineffective."It is not right that people in the area of Foxhole in Youghal shouldbe regularly woken up at 6am from the smell from the landfill, even though their windows are closed", commented DeputyStanton. "The situation needs to be resolved urgently as thewarmer weather will worsen any existing problem. Last summerflies swarmed into houses which surely posed a huge health risk."Local residents are tax payers and should not have to continueto put up with this situation. As the summer approaches they willnot be able to sit outside in their own gardens due to the foul con-ditions. This situation is having a very negative impact on theirhealth and quality of life. Action must be taken immediately toremedy the problem.

On Saturday 17th May, our race was from Monaghan. This wasour first Federation race where we competed against all Munsterpigeon fanciers. The birds were released at 8.00 am and it turned out to be a verystraight race with heavy losses by some fanciers and others gettinggood returns. No one can pin point the reason for this as weather conditionswere ok. Even our senior fanciers are at aloss to explain why wehad such a difficult race and even came up with a few unbeliev-able excuses, not printable, as to what happened. The full result is as follows: 1st Paddy Hehir, 2nd Billy Hehir, 3rdPat Parker, 4th Billy Hehir, 5th Pat Parker. The club would like to thank all its 2008 sponsors

Wash tomatoes and cut in half length ways, scoop out the seedsand pulp and set them upside down to drain, keep the seeds andpulp in a cup.Place the breadcrumbs, parmesan, herbs, onions, garlic, salt, pepper and the tomato pulp with seeds in a bowl mixwell together with 3 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil.If the mix-ture looks too dry add some more oil, fill each tomato with thismixture and arrange the them in a lightly oiled baking tray, driz-zle with olive oil and roast for about a half hour or until the bread-crumbs are browned. You can add anchovies, olives and capers to the ingredients to giveextra flavour or give it a twist adding mozzarella or feta cheese.Usually I make more mixture then needed so I can top up mytomatoes with some extra filling!

It has been quite a year for the Via team. Fergal and Jo opened thecoffee shop and deli on the ground floor of The Priory in Marchlast year. Luigi and Giovanni arrived from Italy in May (theyquickly realised that Irish May weather was slightly different toItalian May weather!) and the first floor restaurant opened in June. The restaurant has gone through some changes in its first year, however, the ethos still remains the same, the crucial emphasis onlocal and seasonal, in the importance of time, tradition and fami-ly. Head chef Luigi Camilleri trained with some of the finestItalian chefs during his time in London, including GeorgioLocatelli. Luigi now recreates Italian recipes with local, Irishingredients with a distinctly Irish feel, e.g. slow-roasted Durocpork belly served with apple mashed potato and savoy cabbage!Via @ The Priory is also Ireland’s first restaurant to commit toonly serving sustainable fish and for this reason, has picked up alot of national press attention. Via has been host to theatre events, tasting evenings, live music sessions and more is planned for thefuture. They hope to soon introduce wine tastings to go along withtheir Priory Wine Club, cookery demonstrations and further char-ity events. The new summer menu has just been launched andincludes some old favourites as well as new additions. Startersrange from 6.50 to 12.50, mains from 12.95 to 24.50 with allhome-made desserts at 6.50. The new early bird menu alsooffers a great deal - three courses for 27.95 between 6 & 8pmTuesday - Friday. A good wine selection is also available includ-ing wines from Italy, Spain, France and Germany and there isalways a helpful staff member on hand to guide and advise - theyreliably inform us that they have tried every wine on themenu! The ground floor coffee shop and deli is going fromstrength to strength serving home-made cakes and desserts, toast-ed sandwiches, salads and antipasti, coffees, teas and wines. Infact, it has become so busy that sometimes it is hard to get a seat! From the beginning of June, the first floor restaurant will also beopen at lunchtime, serving the same menu, but also with the addi-tion of some traditional, home-made pastas. But Fergal and Johope that this won’t only be a summer thing. Jo says "the deli has

become really popular with lots of local people who live and workin Youghal, the trouble is I just don’t have enough seats for themdownstairs! We realise that summer is probably going to be busierso we want to ensure that we don’t disappoint our regular guestswhilst taking advantage of the summer trade. If things go well andthe new menu is popular then we would love to keep the first flooropen for lunch all year round!"The Priory Picnics are also back onfor the summer months offering freshly prepared, home-madefood to take away and enjoy whilst sight-seeing or simply enjoy-ing a day on the beach. All hampers come with wine and startfrom 55 - see menus in The Priory or have a look at www.thep-riory.ie for full details. Summer opening hours are The Priory - 10am-5pm Tuesday - Saturday, Via @ The Priory 1stfloor restaurant 6-9.30pm Tuesday - Sunday, Lunch Tuesday -Saturday 12-2.30pm. For further information, telephone 02491482/92574 or visit www.thepriory.ie. You could of course alsopop in for a cup of coffee to 56 North Main Street, Youghal.

Experts in the field of regenerating historic cities and townsthroughout Ireland and the UK shared their experiences at a majorconference in Youghal’s Town Hall on Thursday 15th and Friday16th May.Supported by The Heritage Council of Ireland, Cork CountyCouncil and Youghal Town Council this conference was fundedthrough the County Heritage Plan and looked at the application ofpublic realm strategies in Ireland.Catherine Desmond, Archaeologist, Department of Environment,Heritage & Local Government and Youghal Heritage Committeecommented:"Youghal is a most fitting venue for this conference being one ofthe finest examples of a walled town in Europe. We have set outa vision for the 21st Century that envisages the development of thetown as high quality, safe, urban environment, attractive toinvestors, employees, and residents. Youghal is facing a new era ofdevelopment and transformation. We are now also finally startingto realise our enormous tourism potential attracting an increasingnumber of international visitors".Youghal Town Council undertook the innovative step of develop-ing a Heritage-Led Regeneration Plan along with a Public RealmPlan for the historic core of the town. The protection of publicrealm has determined the need for the delivery of the most effec-tive presentation, management and development of a town’s pub-lic realm with particular reference to the Historic Town. The conference was designed to provide information to localauthorities, planners, engineers, architects, private developers andconsultants. Its concept emanated directly from the YoughalHeritage Committee who worked closely with the County HeritageForum to find the support and funding to make it a reality.

A heifer was just one ofnumerous items very kindly sponsored for a fundraising auctionheld recently at the Ole Mill in Kinsalebeg, The proceeds of thisauction which raised over 5000 goes towards sending Kinsalebegstudent Marta to "Maisai, Northern Thailand" in July. Daughter ofLiam and Kay Marta is one of four students travelling to Thailandas part of the Freedom House "Hill Tribe Education VolunteerProgram" Freedom House is a school set up to provide hill tribe and refugeechildren with and education, which in turn will give them betterwork opportunities. The school provides instruction in Thai andEnglish and children learn at their own individual pace. Children involved on this programme live in slum areas and have towork from a tender young age because they can not speak Thai andcan not afford to go to school they are stuck in a vicious circle ofpoverty.Volunteers at Freedom House give them an opportunity to changethat by teaching them Thai, then they can become active in Thaisociety and seek legitimate employment, by learning English thechildren are given an opportunity to work in the tourism industry astour guides or in hotels.Freedom House also provides a daily healthy meal to the children aspart of the program, but this would not be possible without volun-teers like Marta, who raise money to sponsor their trip to Thailand, along with giving them time as a volunteer out there. Marta wants us to thank everyone who sponsored items for the auc-tion, thanks to also our MC and auctioneer Pat "Knobber" Daly ofCRY fame, Assumpta Dalton who did trojan work behind thescenes, who provided the music and everyone who helped in anyway especially Kieran, Suzanne and staff at the Ole Mill.We wish Marta and her fellow students all the best in their travels.Sponsored Walk Once again this year Clashmore National school will host theirannual sponsored "June Walk" Cards for the walk are presentlybeing distributed through the school and once again we have somelovely prizes for our sellers, three Waterford Hurling Shirts featur-ing the new "Yop" logo, one for each classroom and they have beenvery kindly sponsored by Ger Wyley Sports Dungarvan. By Christy Parker Change and progress were much in evidence when Youthreacheducation centre held its open day last week. Now 18 monthshoused on six acres at the former Colaiste Eoin centre at GolfLinks Road, the space and facilities bear no comparison to thecramped conditions at the former address in Seafield BusinessCentre. "Perceptions have changed," says co-ordinator CarolNewman. "Youthreach is now a very valid form of education andis being mainstreamed. It is recognised in legislation as a ’centreof education.’ A classrooms tour with resource worker Maeve O’Leary reflectsthe transition. Board headings in Leaving Cert Applied depictstudy on Local, National and Global issues- immigration, pollu-tion, divorce, Travellers’ rights, alcohol abuse, crime & punish-ment national, etc, etc. Rooms housing art, wood, metal and computer courses areimpressively equipped to cater for such courses as Arts & Crafts,Catering, Marquetry, Food & Nutrition, Computer Applications,Communications, Drama, Personal Effectiveness, MusicAppreciation, Woodcraft, Metalwork/Engineering WorkshopProcesses/ Video Awareness, Maths, Personal & InterpersonalSkills, Floristy and Involvement in Community Projects. Sometimes, when the two adult learning groups -Back toEducation and Adult Literacy- who also avail of the premises aresimultaneously present, there must persist a bustling ambience.Yet set back from the road on, swathed in light an air, learning andpeace seem most pertinent here. "The intimate little communityatmosphere we had in the old place has changed but it’s still a verypersonal establishment," says Maeve. "Besides," she proceeds,"On occasions when adult classes are on the premises, it enhancesour students’ social and interactive skills."Managed by Cork County VEC, the Youtreach Programme is per-mitted a full compliment of 25 students/trainees. It presentlyaccommodates 19 and employs three full-time and five part-timetutors. Enrolment is instantaneous and dependent on applicantsbeing aged 15-21 and not having sat the Leaving Cert. Traineesachieve National Foundation Certificates when successfully com-pleting some basic programmes that are Trainee Centred andbased on Modules designed by the National Council forVocational Awards (NCVA). At the moment, there are no more than eight students to a class, across the provision of Junior Cert, Leaving Cert Applied andFetac (Further Education Training Awards Council). The curricu-lum meets national standard, as Carol stresses. The process of studying it differs though. Notwithstanding theexcellent resources, many would regard the small pupil/tutor ratioas the ultimate benefit. "Yes, some people learn better in smallgroups," agrees Carol. "We can be more flexible and can focus ona student’s strengths and potential are rather than on what theycan’t do. That builds confidence. We also incorporate literacy ineverything and have a lot more crossover in subjects."Other crossovers occur too. The students visit the nearby GAAheadquarters twice weekly for sports and gym. "The girls have justhad two months of gym with personal trainer and are doing box-ing now too through the Cork County Sports Partnership," informsCarol. The next two weeks will bring exams, followed by a month ofwork experience. The students will unwind with a fortnight ofadventure and activity. "We’ll have day trips, beach trips, carting, cinema, sports days and so on, much of it with other Youthreachgroups, "says Maeve. "There’s also a Youthreach boat in Bantryand we’ll be going there too," she concludes. Youthreach inquiries: (024) 93869; e-mail: [email protected]’S ’Better Text’ initiative: * Currently Youthreach is engaged in a funding application withthe AIB Better Ireland awards. On offer is 10,000 award. Alsovying for the money in Youghal are Foroige and Youghal YouthProject. Previously, applications were received and decided byadministration but now a new system has been introduced. One

might question its taste and morality. The town’s three youthorganisations have been pitted against each other in a text-votingbattle. Basically, the group that receives the most text messagesupport from May 6th to June 6th wins the prize. Texts cost 60c.One can send as many texts as one wishes -or can afford. ’All proceeds (after operator charges & VAT) will go to the rele-vant short-listed group, regardless of the final voting outcome,’gushes the AIB blurb. In reducing a crucial funding issue to the status of a crude gameshow competition, the AIB regards quantity above quality andadds further pressure on already hard-pressed organisations andindividuals. Then again, not everyone automatically associatesquality -or sensitivity- with the Irish banking culture. ’Vote for theChildren’, urges the nauseating promotion leaflet, seeminglyoblivious to the fact that ’voting’ for one child means ’voting’against another. If you want to do so anyway, the text number is53099, followed by A for Youthreach and B or C for either of theothers. You may prefer to ignore it altogether.

Road Signage Must beImproved Stanton

Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton has called for bettermaintenance and provision of road signage in East Cork. DeputyStanton has raised this matter in the Dail having noticed thatmany road traffic and tourist information signs are in poor condi-tion or obscured from view. While most signs on main roads are clear and well maintained, Icannot say the same for signs on country roads and in towns andvillages. As we come into the summer, visibility of signs on morerural roads becomes and issue as hedgerows grow, and often part-ly cover signs. While many locals are largely unaffected by this,it must cause many problems for tourists who are unused to thearea, noted Deputy Stanton. Both the National Roads Authority and Local Authoritiesshare responsibility for the provision, cleaning and maintenanceof signs on national roads and local/regional roads respective-ly. Any costs in relation to this comes from the bodies ownresources but in the case of Local Authorities additional moniesare available from the Department of Transport. Many areas of East Cork are already suffering from litteringand roadside dumping which affects both local people andtourists. Broken, dirty and unclear road signs only serve to wors-en the impression we are portraying to tourists. While illegaldumping is difficult to combat, I see no reason why road trafficand other signs cannot be maintained in good condition through-out the year, especially during summer months, concluded DavidStanton TD

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS QuestionI understand that if I am providing full-time care to someone witha disability I can get a Respite Care Grant. How do I get it?AnswerThe Respite Care Grant is paid once a year to certain carers of peo-ple in need of full-time care and attention. It is paid automaticallyin early June by the Department of Social and Family Affairs tothose who are getting Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, ConstantAttendance Allowance or Prescribed Relative’s Allowance. It ispaid automatically by the Health Service Executive to those whoare getting Domiciliary Care Allowance. Other carers providing full-time care have to apply. If, however, you received the grant last year, you do not need to apply again asthe Department writes to you to verify the details. To qualify youmust be:Aged 16 or over and ordinarily resident in the StateCaring for the person on a full-time basisCaring for the person for at least six months - this period mustinclude the first Thursday in June Living with the person being cared for or, if not, be contactablequickly by a direct system of communication, for example, tele-phone or alarmYou do not qualify if you are working, studying or training morethan 15 hours per week outside the home, if you are getting anunemployment payment or if you are signing on for unemploy-ment credits. You also do not qualify if you are living in a hospi-tal, convalescent home or similar institution. The person beingcared for must have a disability that requires full-time care andattention and must not be receiving it from someone else. He/shemust not normally live in a hospital, convalescent home or similarinstitution but may attend a non-residential training course or daycare centre. For 2008, the Respite Care Grant is 1,700 for eachperson being cared for. The application form (RCG1) is availablefrom your local Social Welfare Office or Citizens InformationCentre. If you are caring for more than two people you will alsorequire a Form RCG1(a) for each additional person.Further infor-mation is available from your local Citizens Information Centre.Question I am travelling in Europe this summer. Am I entitled touse public healthcare in other EU countries if I fall ill?Answer If you are visiting certain European countries and youbecome ill or get injured, the European Health Insurance Cardallows you to access public healthcare services. It replaces theE111 form which had previously been required. If you are going on a short stay to an EU country, an EEA country(Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) or to Switzerland, it is advisableto have the card to cover you and your family for public health-care. Each person travelling will need a card. It is not required fora temporary visit to the UK if you can show that you are ordinar-ily resident in Ireland. You can apply for the card online at www.ehic.ie if you alreadyhave a medical card, GP visit card or a Drugs Payment Schemecard. Otherwise you can download an application form from thiswebsite or get it from your Local Health Office. You will need toprovide your name, address, date of birth and Personal PublicService Number (PPS No.). You should apply for the card a month before travelling if possi-ble. If there is not enough time to get the card before you travel, contact your Local Health Office to get a Temporary ReplacementCertificate for each person travelling instead. If you have a card that has expired, you can apply online to renewyour card. You will require your existing card number. If you havechanged your address or your name, you will need to contact yourLocal Health Office. If you have concerns about getting a renewedcard in time, you can get a Temporary Replacement Certificate. You may also wish to consider taking out private travel insurancefor some expenses that are not covered by the European HealthInsurance Card. These may include the costs of repatriation homeor the expenses of relatives who travel to you if you fall ill abroad.Further information is available from your local CitizensInformation Centre. This column has been prepared by YoughalCitizens Information Centre. The centre provides a free and confidential service to the public

MOE’S OFF- LICENCE1,500 HOLIDAY DRAW

Photo Michael Hussey

Local journalist Christy Parker picks the lucky winner

By Christy Parker Two months ago Adrian Colman went into Moe’s off licence on theNorth Main Street and bought some Budweiser. Last Friday night hegot his change. The ’change’ in question refers to country, climate andprobably currency however. That same week Adrian had become the first of eight weekly winnersin a draw for customers who spent over 10. He and the other sevennames drawn from the weekly entrants qualified for a super-draw inwhich Moe’s owner Garreth Last would donate a 1,500 travel vouch-er purchased from McDonalds Travel. Last week most of the winners were represented at Moe’s for the bigdraw and enjoyed complimentary wine, cheese and sandwiches whiledreaming of exotic white beaches, turquoise seas and colourful cock-tails sipped under palm trees many, many miles from Youghal land-fill’s odours. Only one of them was fated to see those dreams paid for on the night. On hearing his name called, Adrian Coleman went into mild shockand his eyes glazed over somewhat. "I can’t believe it. I’ve never wonanything before!", he eventually decided. The winner, 32, is a scaffolder with ANF Scaffolding and also drivesp/t for John Long taxi & coach services. His girlfriend is Aoife Butler, daughter of Youghal Comhaltas Chairman Micheal and they have afive year-old, Manchester-United supporting son, Cian. "I’ve been toseveral countries," recalls Adrian of Spain, France, Belgium. HollandBulgaria, "but I’ve no idea where we’ll go with this. It’s fantastic. I’dlike to thank Moe’s very much." As Adrian and Aoife ponder over maps, Moe’s shop manager WayneRuxton reflected on the success of the venture. "We had over a hun-dred entries every week," he revealed, adding, "We’ll probably doanother one for Christmas." Cork-born Gareth opened Moe’s last December. Gareth sharesresponsibility for Moe’s with fiancØe Noreen and shop managerWayne, from Youghal. Wayne, formerly employed at Carry Out andAqua Blue at Carlton Wharf, has an in-depth knowledge of the offlicence trade, as reflected in a Diploma in Wine. Moe’s strives to be"that little bit different" offering unusual and unexpected ranges. Andyou could end up in some unusual and unexpected place yourself too.

YOUGHAL GAA’S CZECHLODGERS SET TO LEAVE

By Christy Parker Nine members of a multinational disability group returned homethis week after an unexpected stint as lodgers at Youghal GAA’Club Aras headquarters. The group became stranded in the townwhen their bus broke down shortly after arriving in Ireland to par-ticipate in a series of relay runs to raise disability awareness. The nine, all Czechs, were part of the ’European Association forSpecial Social Groups’ consisting of 104 runners and carers andcomprising teams from locations in Hungary, Czech Republic,Poland, Romania and Ukraine. A mixture of physically and mentally disabled and largely fromdeprived backgrounds, they have been engaged in a 10-year proj-ect with unwieldy title, ’Integrative Meetings of Friends’, since1999. Every summer they run a series of 2 km relays in Europeancountries, through which they seek to "promote broader integra-tion of the disabled into societies, improve mental and physical fit-ness and develop friendships," says Austrian Jerzy Chrabek, a 64year-old remedial worker and tour organiser. Over time the teams evolve, with participants leaving and beingreplaced by others. Different countries join and depart also overthe years. Accommodation usually consists of a pre-arrangedagreement to use sports hall facilities, where the guests employ theinflated mattresses they carry with them. Bearing a personally signed support letter from PresidentMcAleese, ten vans bearing the latest representatives arrived inRosslare on May 18th for the Irish leg of a three-week tourthrough Denmark, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland,Holland and Belgium. Following a run from Waterford to Dungarvan on the day ofarrival, the vans departed for an overnight stay in Youghal andanticipated accommodation at Youghal GAA’s headquarters onMagner’s Hill. A misunderstanding in communications howevermeant no arrangements had been made and neither welcome norhall was prepared. Youghal Mayor Dave Savage, Youghal GAASecretary Assumpta Parker and Vice-Chairman Ken Bulmanworked feverishly to remedy the situation. Once it was established that the group’s self-acquired insurancearrangements were in order, the headquarters were made availableand an embarrassing, not to mention stressful, situation was avert-ed. Mayor Savage, on behalf of the Council, made one a largetakeaway order from Doyle’s to feed the contingent. Unfortunately, while their peers continue their tour towardsNorthern Ireland next day, a broken down van meant the Czechshad to stay behind. An expected two-day sojourn evolved into aweek as spare parts became difficult to acquire in Cork.Eventually, with another fortnight hovering on the radar the partydecided to fly home, with the van to be collected later. "It was asurprise development but we have been glad to help out. Weadmire what they are doing and they are most welcome," says MrBulman.Rumours that the guests would be press-ganged into playingIntermediate hurling have been denied by the GAA, whileWaterford selectors are said to have acquired the services of aDeise-Czech translator too late. ’Integrative Meetings of Friends’s agenda is extremely worthy as ittirelessly strives to hammer down prejudice, fear and apathy."Disabled people can interact with mainstream society and cancontribute enormously to it," Mr. Chrabek repeats. "All we seek isa fair chance." Thus far he has promoted that quest throughapproximately 170 towns across 22 countries and covered 17,000km of which over 9,000 km has been run. They have had audi-ences with Pope John Paul II in 2002 and several heads of statehave given their writing support. The series is expected to end insummer 2009 in Andorra. Meanwhile Youghal GAA helped nineCzech participants to assimilate very well in 2008.

Mr. Ned OKeeffe TD has confirmed that Cork County Council(South) has been approved a capital allowance of 2,545,140 forprivate house grants for older people and people with a disabilityfor the year 2008.Deputy OKeeffe has stated that this is very wel-come in view of the increasing demand for assistance under thisscheme. This scheme covers house repairs and adaptation workswhich when carried out, dramatically improves the living condi-tions of the applicants.

CHATTERBOX SUMMERSHOWCASE

A sunny May Monday evening welcomed audiences to the open-ing night of the Chatterbox summer showcase which was held lastweek in the Mall Arts Centre, Youghal. Girls and boys from theChatterbox school entertained full houses on both nights of theshow. After the official opening speech given by Mayor DavidSavage, the curtains drew back revealing six dancers tapping theirtoes to the song the best is yet to come. That certainly was thecase. As the song continued, we saw more dancers take to thestage adding their own unique style of dance. The crescendo of thesong saw 26 students dance in unison to an opening number thatset the standard for the rest of the show. Each class had their moment in the spotlight. It was hard tobelieve that some children were performing for the first time onstage! Their smiles and energy aptly concealed any hidden anxi-ety, leaving tears the reserve of the proud parents in the audience. The colourful costumes and set, mixed with a good variety ofmusic from numerous genres plus the dramatic interludes madefor an evening that entertained both young and old. As the final curtain came down on Tuesday night, weary headsharbouring relentless smiles epitomised the heart of Chatterbox. When is our next show? was the question echoing backstage. Watch this space!

Youghal News.....May 29th 2008

Youghal is set to be the most exciting location in the country thiscoming June when the Thundercat European Beach Challengetakes place from the 20th to the 22nd. On water, on land and in theair, the thousands that attend are promised world-class entertain-ment for the entire family. For the first time ever in Ireland topinternational Thundercat teams will race right on the shoreline, giving spectators a powerboating experience they can almostreach out and touch. Unusually, for an Irish outdoor event, weath-er conditions are not an issue - if the weather is great then every-one will enjoy a balmy, yet exciting weekend at the beach inYoughal, but if the weather is in any way inclement then theThundercat spectacle gets even more exciting. In short, whateverthe weather - Youghal is going to be the place to be.Continuing the family-friendly theme of the weekend the organis-ers have packed a huge supporting festival into the three days ofthe event. The largest firework display ever seen in these parts willkick off proceedings on the Friday night, preceded by a free out-door concert by ’Abbaesque’ and a parade by the Thundercats - allright in the centre of Youghal town. Daytime on Saturday andSunday the action moves to Claycastle Beach (1 mile from thetown) where an exciting programme of land, sea and air displayswill keep all ages entertained from 10am each morning until 7pmeach evening. And if that’s not enough, then there’s also a greatboatshow, plus a food and craft market. In the evening the actionmoves back into the centre of Youghal with even more great freeconcerts and street entertainment. To make life easy for the thou-sands expected to attend, there will be a full park and ride servicein place with shuttle buses transferring visitors from designatedparking locations to the main event site and Youghal town centre. This year’s event is completely free to the public and huge thanksare extended to Cork County Council, Youghal Town Council,Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group and the businesscommunity in Youghal for providing the funding required to makean event of this enormous scale possible.Thundercats began life as surf-rescue boats in South Africa wherethey were the only boats that could go out into the wild SouthernOcean waves to rescue surfers. Following a eureka moment fromsome of the rescue crews, these small inflatable craft started rac-ing in the surf just off the beach. They are now raced all over theWorld, from South Africa to Australia, New Zealand, all over

Europe and bothsides of America.Pulling well over2g on cornersthese amazingcraft have a betterpower-to-weightratio than aFerarri. Racing atspeeds over 60mph they race atight circuit righton the shoreline and race finishes often see them driving right upon to the beach at full speed. This is the first powerboat race to beheld in Ireland under the guidance of the Irish SailingAssociation’s (ISA) new Motorboat Division, and it is fitting thatThundercats will kick-off what promises to be an exciting new erafor Irish watersports. Exciting, challenging and great fun,Thundercats look set to become a regular sight in Irish waters, with many new Irish teams expected to be tempted into the seriesdue to their relatively low cost of purchase. While this year will be one of the largest free public events in thecountry, the potential for Youghal is even greater. The town is cur-rently in the running to become the location for the NorthernEuropean leg of the Powerboat P1 World Championship. This isone of the biggest sporting events in the world with a global tele-vision reach of 2.2 billion and an expected attendance of 150,000spectators a day. If Youghal is successful then it would play hostto the event for five years, starting in 2009. The potential benefits, not just to Youghal but the entire South-East coastline fromWaterford City right down into Cork Harbour, are staggering -global media focus, direct economic impact of more than 260million, job creation and a massive tourism influx. P1 is the water-based equivalent to Formula 1 Racing with all of the associatedglitz and glamour - pits, tented villages, VIP’s, concerts, interna-tional fashion shows and parties, etc. This is truly an exciting timefor Youghal, and the people of the region are invited to come alongthis June 20th to 22nd to witness an amazing spectacle - and to beable to say that they were there right at the start!

YOUGHAL RED CROSSOccupational First Aid

Presentation of Certificates On Tuesday 6th May at the Walter Raleigh HotelThe Youghal Branch of the Red Cross Society was host to thepresentation of certificates to participants of an Occupational FirstAid Course given by Pat McCarthy at Pobalscoil na Trionoide. On behalf of the Youghal Branch, Elaine Mulcare (Hon.Chairperson) welcomed the Cork Area Chairman Denis Twomeyand expressed her appreciation at his support and dedication. Headded that very often it may be a family member or close friendthat you are called on to give first aid.As a follow up to doing a basic first aid course Denis Twomeyreminded people that they could further their expertise by joiningthe local branch of the Red Cross and take part in duties at sportsevents and help out in the community: For example, a memberalways helps out at the Blood Bank. To further their skills theycould also do an emergency First Responder Course or do a coursein Hand Care. Unit members also take part in competitions and itis hoped that the local unit will be reactivated shortly.Denis Twomey also gave some insight into how the Red Cross wasresponding to International disasters such as Burma and the areahit by the Tsunami. JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE 20/05/2008YOUGHAL 0-13 V DUNGOURNEY 1-10A good outing for the footballers who have not had a game sincethe opening game of the Championship, and the lack of gametime was evident early on where the visitors went 3 points up inthe opening few minutes. Youghal eventually got to grips withthings and but for a soft goal near the break would have been wellahead at the break. Dungourney to their credit stuck to the taskaided by the breeze in the second half and fought hard to earn adraw.Team: D. Kilgannon, A. Fox, P. O’ Laochdha, S. Kelly, D.Savage, S. Twomey, N. JUVENILE CLUB:YOUGHAL 2-1 V KILLEAGH 3-0 20/05/2008The Youghal U8 team played their first match of the year onTuesday last. They were pitched against neighbouring Killeagh. The first half saw a more experienced Killeagh dominate with 3goals despite valiant defending by the Youghal boys. The Goaltally would have been greater but for the hard work of backs suchas Kyle Brown, Rory McSweeney and Colm Breslan. Youghalnerves settled in the second half and the momentum shifted leav-ing most of the play in the Killeagh half. The midfield pairing ofJake O’ Brien and Liam Ansbro Moylan put in 2 goals and a pointto make the final quarter a cliff hanger. An inspirational svae fromYoughal Goal keeper Ben Dalton gave further impetus to theYoughal effort, however a resilient Killeagh held onto a two pointmargin at the end. Based on this performance and given that thiswas the first ever match for most of the Youghal lads great thingsare expected from this Team over the coming years. Team: BenDalton, Kyle Brown, Conor Cremin, Ethan Cliffe, RoryMcSweeney, Colm Breslan, Peter Kirk, Jake O’ Brien, LiamAnsbro Moylan, Jake Cooper, Padraig Quilliagan, RuarMcMahon, Aaron O’ Regan, Ross Bulman, Christian Persaud,Jake McGrath, Conor Donovan, Tiernan McCarthy, Sean Flavin,Adam & Cian O’ Sullivan, Calum Malone, Aidan Kelly.

U14 FOOTBALL LEAGUEKILLEAGH 4-6 V YOUGHAL 2-6 23/05/2008This had all the makings of a great contest, Killeagh had reachedthe final of the FØile Competition and Youghal have been goingwell in the league to date. The game started out competitively andremained a tight and fast paced game for the opening quarter withnothing between the sides, but after this things started to gowrong. Through no fault of their own or lack of effort Youghalwere always chasing this game. The performance of the man inthe middle and the biased shown left both camps scratching theirheads. What should have been a cracker was ruined by the refer-ee. Youghal had two goals disallowed for very questionable deci-sions and on the other hand Killeagh were awarded a goal for aclear cut square ball. Youghal were still in this going into the lastfew minutes with only a goal in it when the referee awarded apenalty to a young Killeagh lad who lost his balance trying tokick the ball with nobody within touching distance. The kick wasbrilliantly saved by Dillon Mason but for the referee asking it tobe taken again for reasons only known to him. This time theKilleagh taker held his nerve and buried the penalty. Killeaghwere the better team on the night but both camps went home dis-satisfied with the evening. Hopefully we will meet again later inthe year when we are sure to see a classic game between two verycompetitive teams.Team: D. Mason, G. O’ Regan, M. Coady, R. O’ Sullivan, D.Walsh, D. Twomey, L. McCarthy, S. Sheehan, K. Ansbro, C.Coyne, D. Lewis, J. Caliac, J. Whelan, D. O’ Mahony, B.Donohoe. Subs: O. Dempsey, J. Murphy, C. Farrell, J. Power, M.Kenefick, D. Malone, D. Daly.Congratulations to Sarah, Eileen, Laura and Denny who won250 in the County Board Lotto Draw last week. The May drawtakes place on Friday Night 30th.

Always remembered with love from your husbandMaurice, sons William and Eoin, family and friends
