St. Mary’s School: Jennifer Swanson, Principal
Welcome to Jordan Borchert, our new Administra!ve Assistant. We are delighted to add her to our parish
staff. She will be the smiling face you see at the front desk and the pleasant voice who will answer the phone.
Behind the scenes, she will support the work of our parish staff in numerous ways. Jordan grew up in Owaton-
na, so she knows us well. Please welcome her when you see her.
Thanks to Angie Ahlberg who is leaving the posi!on of Administra!ve Assistant as her husband is
transferring to Iowa. We appreciate her hard work, dedica!on, and skills. God bless her and John as they
make this transi!on in their life.
Congratula!ons to all of the graduates. On Thursday, we celebrated the gradua!on of our St. Mary’s Eighth grad-
ers. For the last several years, they have taken one final opportunity for prayer and service as they leave St. Mary’s. It has
been great to see their Facebook reflec!ons on what they will miss. They have been a terrific group and we will miss their
leadership. As my years at Sacred Heart lengthen, I am aware that these young people were not even in school yet when I
arrived in 2008.
Next weekend our high school students will par!cipate in commencement. I enjoyed celebra!ng Baccalaureate
with them last Saturday evening at Mass. They took on many of the liturgical roles and showed us their ongoing love of the
Lord and commitment to His Church. One of the great blessings of our parishes is the encouragement that the youth of
the parish take on roles within our community. It is always wonderful to have a young person reading, leading music, dis-
tribu!ng Holy Communion, ushering, serving as a minister of hospitality. They reflect the vibrancy of our parish communi-
ty. I am sure that they will go on to exci!ng and interes!ng things. May God Bless you all.
As we announced last weekend the pastoral assignments are beginning to be announced by Bishop Quinn. Fr. Ste-
phen, who has been with us since November and has stepped up so beau!fully as Pastoral Associate at St. Joseph’s and
Christ the King during this interim !me, will become the pastor of St. Mary’s Parish in Caledonia. He has a great heart for
ministry and service and has really put effort into learning the “American way” of administering a parish. We pray for him
as he makes this transi!on.
The new pastor of St. Joseph and Christ the King will be Fr. James Starasinich who is pastor of Sacred Heart parish
in Lyndhurst, NJ. Due to the shortage of available pastors for our diocese Bishop Quinn asked Cardinal Tobin of the Archdi-
ocese of Newark to release a priest for ministry in our diocese. Cardinal Tobin is graciously releasing Fr. Starasinich for the
next few years. We look forward to welcoming him.
Finally, please pray for Ma"hew Wagner who will be ordained to the Diaconate next Sunday at the Cathedral of
the Sacred Heart in Winona. My own diaconate was at the Altar of the Chair in St. Peter’s Basilica during my studies in
Rome. It was a blessing to have a nice sized group of family and friends who were able to come and celebrate with us. If
you have been to my office you will have seen pictures of my diaconate ordina!on on the wall. It is a special memory for
me. The Office of Deacon is one of service to the Church. He will have a special responsibility to reach out to the poor and
those in need and be the hands of the Bishop in those situa!ons. God willing, Ma& will be ordained to the priesthood next
year.
Some ques!ons have arisen about the !ming of our Gi#s from the Heart campaign and the ongoing campaign to
fund the St. Mary’s floor loan. The St. Mary’s campaign is in the redemp!on phase at this !me with about a year and a half
remaining. We are beginning plans for a follow-up to raise the rest of the funds needed. We are exploring how best to
structure this and what part the school community, parishes and Catholic Educa!on Memorial Fund will play. We would
foresee this taking place a'er the comple!on of our campaign.

I love doing laundry. I know, I know. It’s a strange thing to admit. I love to see the hamper empty. I enjoy
throwing a load in here and there, or even doing several on the same day. There’s such a feeling of accomplish-
ment when several large piles get down low or disappear altogether! And I’m kind of par!cular about how
things are folded, which things go on hangers, and remembering what can go in the dryer and what has to be
dried flat or line dried. So that cement floor room in the basement has become my domain, which is just fine
with my husband. I do allow Auggie to help me load the washer (he stands on a step stool and tosses things in
one at a !me, always begging for more soap) or transfer things to the dryer, something we both enjoy. When I fold a load,
I grab a few things out of the dryer and keep the rest tumbling, a trick my mom taught me to help the rest of the items not
get wrinkled. Along with a clearly finished task, laundry !me is enjoyable because it’s almost medita!ve, that act of stand-
ing there and quietly folding and stacking clothes for each member of the family. It gives me !me to think, to replay things
in my mind’s eye. This peaceful media!on !me reminds me of a sign I saw once, meant for a laundry room: “Sor!ng life’s
problems, one load at a !me.” O'en I’ll focus on the member of the family whose clothes I am holding, remembering
something we did when she or had that par!cular ou+it on, and it brings a smile to my face. I don’t always remember
when the ou+it was worn, but I am mindful of the person I love and whose clothing I’m shaking out, hanging up, or
smoothing flat. I think, in a similar way, we are called to do the same thing on this Memorial Weekend. Many of us will
find ourselves walking cemeteries, with flowers in hand. We might tend the graves of those we love by brushing away dirt
or debris, touching the name on the headstone, saying a prayer, se/ng flowers nearby, or simply si/ng down and staying
a bit. While there, we might find it a peaceful, medita!ve !me. Memories might flood our hearts and minds: things we
laughed about, things we did together, the sound of their voice, or their touch. We might close our eyes, begging God to
keep our loved ones safe and close at hand, un!l the day we can be with them once again. We ask for strength in our lone-
liness and in all the ways we miss them. Tears might s!ng our eyes as we make this prayer. Choosing to trust, we take a
deep breath, and we let them go again.

ushers this summer, please let Tom Schmi&, our usher co-
ordinator, know or simply give Wendy a call in the

Are You Using Scrip When You Shop?
Scrip is a major fund-raiser for St. Mary’s school and is a
very important way to keep tuition cost down. Participa-
tion in Scrip is a way for our school to financially benefit
from many of the regular purchases our families make.
Many local and national businesses participate in the Scrip
program (including Hy-Vee, Cashwise, Fareway, Amazon,
Lowe’s, Kwik-Trip, Holiday Gas, and many many others).
These businesses then donate a percentage of your pur-
chase back to the school. There is no extra cost to
you. Scrip is available for purchase at St. Mary’s School,
at St. Joseph’s during regular business hours, and at both
churches after Sunday masses. For more information and
a full list of participating businesses, call St. Mary’s at 507-
446-2300 or email [email protected]

Love the Rosary? If you love to pray the rosary, consider becoming a
rosary leader. This person leads assembly members
in praying the rosary prior to each of our weekend’s
Masses. Right now, we only have a handful of people
wiling to lead others in this devo!on. If you can help
about once per month at the Mass of your choice,
please let Wendy know in the office.

Catholic Social Thought
In late March, the United States Bishops, along with
Catholic Chari!es, USA and Catholic Legal Immigra!on
Network, delivered an extraordinarily stern rebuke
when they filed a legal brief in the Supreme Court
case regarding the administra!on's execu!ve order
restric!ng immigra!on from several majority-Muslim
na!ons. The execu!ve order, the bishops charged,
"has both the purpose and the effect of discrimina!ng
against Muslims." Then the brief added: "Such blatant
religious discrimina!on is repugnant to the Catholic
faith, core American values, and the United States
Cons!tu!on. ... Having once borne the brunt of severe
discriminatory treatment, par!cularly in the immigra-
!on context, the Catholic Church will not sit silent
while others suffer on account of their religion."
Did You Know?
At every Sunday liturgy we begin with the sign of the
cross: “In the name of the Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit.” O'en the gesture we make with
those words becomes rote, even meaningless because
we do it so automa!cally. Yet, this gesture is one of
the most basic and profound signs of our faith. The
gesture of crossing ourselves not only praises the Trin-
ity but makes a powerful statement about who we
are. How carefully do we make the sign? How aware
are we of the implica!ons of signing ourselves? This
gesture could be so much more powerful if it were
done with a&en!on and reverence. On Trinity Sunday,
we can make a special effort at signing ourselves with
a&en!on and devo!on. Instead of trying to “explain”
the Trinity, we might take more care at expressing our
belief by the way we make the sign of the cross.
