Carolyn Jones’ Zipping Kane tackles
a red hot field, including favourite
No Donuts, in tonight’s Group 1
Sandown Cup Final

stayer Carolyn Jones has trained but she’ll
have a secret weapon on her side in
Thursday night’s Group 1 RSN927
Sandown Cup in master distance condi-
 tioner Peter Giles.
dinkum stayer I’ve trained but I’ve had
plenty to do with them because of my asso-
ciation with Peter,” Jones explained after
Zipping Kane careered away with his heat
of the world’s richest staying event last
Thursday.
and everything I’ve done with him I’ve run
past Peter, which has given me a lot more
confidence because Peter’s the best condi-
tioner of stayers that Australia has ever
seen.
would end up being a stayer and Martin
(Hallinan, owner/breeder) was very confi-
dent too, but I probably wasn’t as confident
as they were to tell you the truth.
“I didn’t know if he would stick on as well
as he has because straight after a run he
always pulls up pretty puffed. It doesn’t
matter whether it’s a 400m or a 700m,
although he doesn’t take long to recover.
He’s also a really solid fellow so he’s built
more like a sprinter than a stayer too.
“Zipping Kane was one of the first dogs
I’ve trained for Martin. I’m training six dogs
at the moment and Martin owns five of
them, including Zipping Kane’s litter broth-
er Zipping Zeus, so it’s worked out really
 well.”
territory distance-wise with Zipping Kane,
a December ’13 son of Magic Sprite and
Scarlett Girl, the latest staying prospect to
emerge from Martin Hallinan’s seemingly
endless production line, she’s certainly no
stranger to Group 1 glory.
Jones is hoping to add to her collection of
four Group 1 trophies in the Sandown Cup,
with her former superstar sprinter El Grand
Senor having won the Melbourne Cup,
Topgun and Maturity in 2010, while she
also won the 2003 Perth Cup with
Elgrando.
in a Group event since El Grand Senor’s
Melbourne Cup triumph when Zipping
Kane won the Group 3 Racecallers over
595m at Sandown on May 5.
Zipping Kane then stepped up to 700m
for only the second time in his career in last
Thursday’s heats of the $175,000 to-the-
winner Sandown Cup, where he started
$1.70 favourite from box two in the second
of seven heats.

heat win because he was a bit short of a
run but he handled it well and he’s pulled
up good this morning (Friday),” Jones said.
“Earlier in the year we gave him a few
600s and a 700 at The Meadows, which he
won, but after The Meadows he pulled up
sore in his hip support. He’d also had a
pretty hard campaign because we’d pushed
him along a bit, so he was pretty tired too.
“It wasn’t anything major but it took a lit-
tle bit longer than I thought it would for
him to get over it, which meant we were a
bit short of time to prepare him for the
Sandown Cup.
the 700 out and pulling up good. He ran
the second quickest heat time and you
would hope he would improve next week.
An inside draw would help too!
“I’d be more confident if he had a few
more 700s under his belt but I’m happy
with where he’s at. He’s a tough l ittle dog
and he’s a very good chaser.
“I think he’s a similar dog to No Donuts
so he needs to be on the pace. Neither of
them are going to come from behind but
No Donuts has been there and done that
and he’s in good hands (Anthony
 Azzopardi).
ner, Who Dey. will be hard to beat. He looks
like a naturally strong stayer and he raced
in the worst conditions in the heats so I
think he’ll run much better time in better
conditions and he’s in very good hands
too.”
hoping for when the Sandown Cup box
draw was conducted on Saturday morning,
with Zipping Kane the $3 second elect in
bet365’s market after drawing seven
behind $2.10 favourite No Donuts, which
 will exit box three.

STEVE Creighton celebrated a fairy tale
Group 1 victory at his first attempt last
Thursday night when classy Victorian
bitch Narralee continued her remarkable
return from injury in the Sapphire Crown
at Sandown Park.
Galilee and Prince’s Faye, bred by 58-year-
old Creighton, led throughout in the
Sapphire, holding favourite Folio Bale at
bay to record her fourth win from six starts

lines due to a torn Achilles tendon.
“I didn’t know what to say. I was speech-

whelped the litter and reared her. It’s hard
to describe but I can tell you I was looking
for a box of tissues!”
After nursing Narralee back to the track,
with the assistance of partner Melissa
O’Keefe and daughter Amy, Creighton, who
was born and bred in Thirroul in NSW, set
his sights on the Sapphire.
Narralee was first reserve for her
Sapphire heat but took advantage of a fate-
ful eleventh hour call-up to lead through-
out in 29.56, qualifying for her second
Group event after contesting the Warragul
Cup back in January 2015.
Narralee started at $11.80 from box two
in last Thursday’s $100,000 to-the-winner
final, with Andrea Dailly’s fastest heat win-
ner and rails runner Folio Bale the $2.40
favourite.

loomed menacingly on the home turn
Narralee kept kicking strongly to score by
a neck in 29.47, improving her impressive
50% strike rate to 17 from 34.
“To be honest the Sapphire wasn’t really
a plan but after she ran the best of the day
at Sale and Traralgon I decided to put her
in the heats, but because she hadn’t raced
for nine months she didn’t have enough
points to get a run and was a reserve,”
Creighton said.
hadn’t been to Sandown since she last
raced there, which was almost 12 months
ago and I knew she would find a little bit.
“She ran 5.02 in her heat, which will lead
most races at Sandown, so I was hoping
she could repeat that and find a length up
the back, which she did. She ran 18.97 in
her heat and 18.90 last night. She ran
29.47, which isn’t far off her personal best
at Sandown (29.42).

will keep pushing and she won’t give in. If
they get past her then they get past her

chasing dog. She’s one of the best chasers
I’ve ever had and I’ve had some good ones.

TONY Rasmussen says Hukanui is not for sale
at any price after the potential staying star
scorched around Angle Park in the heats of
the Group 3 Howard Ashton last Wednesday
afternoon.
a number of large offers for Hukanui, a
February ’14 son of Kelsos Fusileer, the same
sire as champion sprinter Fernando Bale, the
most recent bid coming in the days leading up
to the Howard Ashton heats.
“We’ve had offers for Hukanui right from
when he won his maiden and it hasn’t been
one or two offers. There’s been plenty of
them and they keep getting bigger and big-
ger,” Tony Rasmussen said.
week. I don’t want to disclose the amount but
the answer was no. It was a pretty good figure
but I didn’t give it any thought at all. He’s not
for sale.
belongs to our family. If I sold him my wife
would divorce me and my daughter, Tara,
would never speak to me again! Tara loves
Hukanui and so does Kiah Hurley, who’s trav-
elled with me when I’ve taken him over to
Melbourne.
“Lisa and I have had some pretty good dogs
over the years but we’ve never had a dog like
this that we’ve actually owned and that’s why
he’s not for sale. He’s got the potential to go
on and be a very good dog and I’m hoping
that 700 will be his go. If I was to do anything
with him I’d send him over to a trainer in
 Victoria.”
school Tony Rasmussen attended in New
Zealand 45 years ago, was fortuitously pur-
chased by the Rasmussens for just $1000.
The early signs weren’t promising, but
patience and perseverance paid off when he
burst onto the scene last September, winning
on debut at Angle Park in 29.96.
“It’s one of those stories where we were in
the right place at the right time,” Rasmussen
explained.
he was moving to Queensland and we bought
Hukanui for $1000 when he was 11 months
old.
and Heather Collins broke him in and they
said we might win a few races with him. He
wasn’t real flash at all. They had a lot of trou-
ble getting him to chase to start with but we
left him there for an extra week and he just
clicked the last ten days.
“I brought him home but he couldn’t break
19 seconds at Strathalbyn, which is shocking.
I do a lot of trialling at Angle Park with the
run-on lure so I took Hukanui down for a d rive
and it really turned him around. Then when he
ran 29.96 in his first 500 at Angle Park when
he was only 18 months old I knew I had a dog.
“I took him over to Melbourne for the
Launching Pad and he trialled 29.40 at
Sandown. He ran second in his heat and semi-
final and then he finished fourth in the final. I
would’ve loved to have seen him come out of
box one that night. I think he might’ve scared
them!”
Melbourne, including a victory at The
Meadows, leading up to last Wednesday’s
heats of the $25,000 to-the-winner Howard
 Ashton, an SA-bred age-restricted series.
Drawn in box one in the fourth of five heats,
Hukanui started at $1.60 and finished power-
fully in the home straight to run down Wilba
Beast, scoring
Melbourne with him,” Rasmussen said.
“I freshened him up for this series. He had-
n’t raced for ten days and I’d been racing him
over in Melbourne because the surface at
Angle Park is too hard. It wasn’t too bad yes-
terday (Wednesday) but it’s been like concrete
and that’s why they’re running the times they
are. I was worried about him breaking down.
“His problem is that he misses the start and
he’s slow early, but when he lobbed behind
the leader in his heat I thought he’d run it
down no worries at all.
“Everyone keeps asking me why I haven’t
stepped him up yet and that’s why people
have been trying to buy him. But he’s still a
baby. He’s only two years and three months
old and I won’t put him over the distance until
he’s two and a half. He’ll definitely run 600
and with maturity I’m confident he’ll get the
700 too.”

Group 2 event in as many weeks this Saturday
when outsider Been Pippin’ contests the WA

July ’14 son of Bekim Bale and Whispering Ling,
was a welcome change of feature race fortune
for Crudeli after a frustrating run of near-miss-
es in 2016, including seconds with Shell
Shocked in the Mandurah Derby and Dyna
Nihilist in the Group 1 Galaxy.
While Shell Shocked was the fastest qualifier
for the $40,000 to-the-winner WA Derby after
winning his heat in 30.11 at just his ninth start,
he started at a generous $8.50 from box seven,
with Chris Halse’s Ramifi cations , beaten
favourite in the Perth Cup, the $2.90 favourite
from box eight.
$32, was best to begin, while Shell Shocked
also jumped well and Enzo Crudeli’s confidence
skyrocketed when he was ominously poised a
close third rounding the first turn.
Shell Shocked had the Derby in his keeping
a long way out as he stormed to the front
approaching the home turn and dashed clear
to defeat Junk Yard Wolf by 2 ¼ lengths in a
best of night 30.18, his fifth win from ten
starts and fourth from his last five.
“We’ve finished second in four or five finals
this year so we were due to win one!” Enzo
Crudeli quipped.
“We were pretty confident Shell Shocked
could win the race. It was just a matter of no
bad luck in the first 150 metres and where he
lobbed and whether he was crowded.
“He did everything right and when he
lobbed third we were just about counting the
bikkies! Only bad luck could have beaten him
from there.
incredible really. I had a small bet and I know
a few people that got on at $8!
“He’s only 22 months old but he’s definitely
the fastest dog we’ve bred and it’s very satis-
fying to win a race like the Derby. He had a
few bad boxes early on but he’s starting to
learn how to race and where to position. He’s
very strong and he’s beginning a bit better now
too.
“I’ve been training for 11 or 12 years. We
were living up at Mullewa, which is about 100
kilometres from Geraldton. I started t raining up
there but when we had 24 dogs in the backyard
we thought it was time to move so we jumped
in the vehicle and came down to Nambeelup.”
Crudeli isn’t getting carried away about his
chances of completing the Derby/Oaks double
this Saturday with Been Pippin’, a January ’14
daughter of Barcia Bale and Historically that ran
second in her heat, beaten a head by the Darren
Rowe-trained Olivia Benson in 30.87.
The other three heat winners were Corey
White’s Marydoll in 30.33, Terry Erenshaw’s
Milly Keeping in 30.34 and Chris Halse’s My
Nakita in 30.58, with Crudeli’s finalist Been
Pippin’ at $34 in bet365’s market.
“Been Pippin’ hasn’t got the speed of some of
the other bitches but she’s honest and she chas-
es hard so you never know. Funnier things have
happened,” Crudeli offered.
“It was a bit of a surprise she made the final
but she’s been running some good races with-
out winning. She only missed out by a head in
her heat and it would be great if she could run
a place in the final.” - Gerard Guthrie
