What’s My GIG? (My gift in giftedness)
The sixth grade Gifted and Talented students attended the Gifted Conference at Region 20, our Education Service Center, in San Antonio, on May 10. Our students met with 300 students from around the region, representing various school districts. Students were engaged in several workshops focusing on their talents and academic strengths. Students learned to identify their learning attributes and styles by analyzing the color
that represented them as learners. They learned about brain research and how it impacts social and emotional needs of students. They were also able to engage in a session that helped them develop their creative sides. Parents also participated in
workshops to gather information in order to understand their students and their needs better. Great job, sixth grade!

FILM CLUB HONORED
The Stacey Film Club has won the top prize in the San Antonio Police Department and San Antonio Talons' "Say Something-Save a Life" public service announcement contest. The
contest assignment was to create a thirty second video encouraging teens to speak up and prevent dangerous behavior in others. The Stacey video about bullying prevention was chosen
out of submissions from schools across San Antonio for first prize. The winning students will attend an awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 29th at 1:00 with officials from the SAPD and
Talons organization at the Public Safety Headquarters downtown. The winning video is available to view on the Stacey News YouTube channel, as well as on the SchoolTube website
with all of the contest entries under the "Say Something - Save a Life" description. The winning video will also screen at the June 8th Talons game.
Quilt Project
These past few months in Mrs. Duron’s Family and
Community Service class, the students have sewn and
stitched quilts for the Greater San Antonio Quilt Guild’s
Brighter Hopes Committee. This organization
gives these quilts to Child Protective Services. Each
student chose a quilt that they would enjoy sewing and seeing the finished project. We are also very proud to help these amazing programs in any way
we can. Thank you to Ms. Todd who delivered the
supplies needed to complete the quilts.

Pizza and Fractions
Students in Mrs. Allen’s class teamed up with Ms. Duron’s high school class
for a lesson on “Fraction Pancakes”. The older students read a book on
Fractions with the first graders listening and answering various questions.
They created books together and made a pancake mix while learning about
the measurements used in making the recipe. They went back a different
day and used the mixture to make the pancakes. The first graders very
much enjoyed their experience with the older students and can’t wait to
do something again! Thank you to everyone for making the lesson
successful!

Coach Smith Stepping Down By Abigail Arndt, Sophomore
After more than two decades at Lackland ISD, Coach Jeff Smith has announced his retirement. Originally hired in 1991 as an elementary school teacher, Mr. Smith became Coach Smith in 1993.
Since then, he has coached volleyball, basketball, tennis, swimming, track, and cross country.
As a coach, he has helped mold young athletes into strong competitors. He’s brought numerous athletes to upper level competitions, and with the help of his coaching, many of Stacey’s
student athletes have brought home medals and trophies. “He’s made me a more dedicated and determined athlete,” sophomore Nick White stated
when asked how Coach Smith has influenced him. Senior Xavier Sanchez agreed, saying, “He’s changed me into a more athletic person.”
However, Coach Smith has brought more than just athletic growth for Stacey’s athletes. He has also inspired students with his passion about fitness and healthy eating, and the emphasis he
puts on working hard. “Coach Smith has really inspired me to be a better athlete and live a healthier lifestyle,” said
junior Jessica Kozlovsky. “He has such a healthy lifestyle that it inspires me to eat better and take care of my body.”
Junior Jamaal Buchanan added, “He’s in a sense one of my major inspirations as a runner … he’s kinda, in my mind, like one of the ultimate athletes.”
Coach Smith has been a part of many people’s lives. During his time at Stacey, he has created many memories with both students and other teachers.
“After more than two decades, it is difficult to select a favorite memory,” Coach Smith explained. “Most recently for me, I would pick November 10th when the first Stacey girls’ cross country team
made it to the UIL State Meet this past season.”
“It would be hard to pick just one,” said Coach Greeness. “Our coaches meetings, all of our trips, the stories we have accumulated over the years, and his presence at work in general will be truly
missed.”
His athletes also have memories that they will always treasure. Jessica said one of her favorite memories was when “we were going to a meet in Seguin, and we were all trying to sleep, and he had already been up for hours, and he had turned up the radio full blast and was hooting
and hollering the entire bus ride. That just sums up Coach Smith for me. How he is so enthusiastic and energized.”
“My favorite memory, is, honestly, hard to say. It’s probably a tie between all of the long trips to faraway towns for cross country and being able to experience the State track meet for the
first time,” said Jamaal. “It’s honestly extremely hard to say. Pretty much any experience with Coach is memorable in some sort of way.”
From early morning practices to daily P.E. classes to long bus rides, Coach Smith has been a big part of his athletes’ lives. He has touched many lives and left a lasting impression on all of us
at Lackland ISD. He will be truly missed. Best of luck, Coach Smith. You will be forever in our hearts.

Battered Women’s shelter
The Stacey Child Development class had the opportunity to tour the Battered Women’s Shelter this month. They learned about what this facility provides for the women and their families in the San Antonio area. Students asked questions about careers of those who work for the shelter and the rewards of their job. Students also donated personal
care kits that they had sewed and filled with toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, a comb, and lotion. Mrs. Duron and her class would like to thank the Lackland PTSO and
Ayanna’s mom for purchasing and donating supplies to fill the kits. The residents at the shelter were very excited about their gifts. Students are also looking forward to hosting a
monthly birthday party for the women and children at the shelter at the end of the month.
Student Council Drive to Benefit Tornado Victims By: Kiana Parham, Junior
On Monday, May 20th, Oklahoma
was hit by a devastating tornado. This
tornado left 24 dead and hundreds
wounded. With more than $2 billion
worth of damage, they are in need of help,
and Stacey is there to help. On the 22nd,
STUCO began a money drive to donate to
the Red Cross to help in the rebuilding of
Oklahoma. As of the 22nd, we have raised
$26.48. To encourage the students to
donate, many teachers have pledged to
donate once the students have raised a
certain amount of money. To add on to
that, Ms. Mickey has decided to match the
funds raised up to $150, and Dr. Roper has
decided to match up to $200. If you would
like to donate STUCO is collecting through
the 31st outside of the cafeteria during lunch and learning lab.

Stacey Sophomore on Mayor’s Fitness Council
By: Chloe Dockter, Sophomore
Stacey Sophomore Gabrielle Tuazon is a member of the Student Ambassador
Program, a program in correspondence with the Mayor’s Fitness Council. As a Student
Ambassador, she is given the opportunity to make a difference in school life, home life,
and the community through different projects that support a healthy lifestyle. This is all
a part of the San Antonio 2020 program, which aims for an all-around better San Antonio
by the year 2020. The Mayor’s Fitness Council’s main focus is on improving the overall
health of San Antonio citizens.
At the Fall Carnival, Gabrielle passed out healthy snacks including apple slices
and peanut butter with almonds. She has helped launched the high school field day May
24th that will inspire students to stay active as the school year ends. She also
participated in “Siclovia “, an event in downtown San Antonio in January. Certain city
streets were closed to automobiles for a 6 hour span. Families were allowed to run, ride
bikes, and exercise in the streets. Mayor Castro kicked off the event and food booths
with healthy snacks were along the streets. “Although it was cold,” said Gabrielle, “the
Zumba in the park really warmed me up”.
San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro appointed the Mayor’s Fitness Council (MFC) in May
2010. Its mission is to lead San Antonio to be one of the healthiest and most active
communities in the nation in which residents, groups, and organizations work collaboratively
to achieve targeted health and fitness goals through initiatives in areas such as fitness,
nutrition, healthy schools, and worksite wellness.

LISD Food Service Message Information on Student Meal Accounts
Lackland ISD wants each student to be successful and we believe that a hungry student
my not be performing up to their full potential. Therefore, we provide all students who go
through our serving line with a meal even when they do not have sufficient funds to pay
for the meal. We understand that some parents don’t always have sufficient funds in their
children’s meal account for numerous reasons. When this only involves a couple meals we
do not worry too much about it because our parents are great about resolving their
account balance within a few days. However, we are seeing a trend of several families not
resolving the payment for their students’ lunches in a timely manner. Since our Lackland
ISD policy does not provide a charge account for any student meals we are reminding
everyone of our school lunch policy and collection procedures. Cost - Currently, a nutritious breakfast meal is provided at a cost of $1.00 and a well-
balanced lunch menu is provided at $2.00. Additionally, families that qualify based on
income criteria are eligible for free or reduced cost for these meals. Each family is
encouraged to review the criteria for this program and complete an application. Please
contact our food service manager, Mr. Marcus Rodriguez, in the cafeteria, through email ([email protected]) or
phone (201-357-5056) for assistance. Our Food Service web site, www.lacklandisd.net,
provides a “Child Nutrition” link to additional information. Student Meal Accounts – We provide student meal accounts as a service to allow parents
to pre-pay for meals so their students do not have to provide cash for each meal. The
student lunch account may be funded by prepayment with cash or checks locally, or
through a credit card charge made on-line. Parents have on-line access to the account
status, to monitor the daily balance, see what meals are purchased, and other features to
set reminders to help maintain a sufficient balance. Initial Notification of Insufficient Account Balance – LEVEL 1: Students are informed
when they go through the serving line (in a respectful manner) when their meal account
does not have insufficient funds and are requested to remind their parents. Additionally,
we provide a notice to the campus principals and will send a written reminder to the
family of their need to resolve the balance in their child’s meal account. For most cases
this is all that needs to be done.

Everyone Smiles in the Same Language
It’s wonderful to share a smile. But not everyone can communicate beyond facial expressions. Millions of people in the United States have a communication
disorder. If you are concerned about a person’s ability to communicate at school, home, or work, consult a
Speech-language pathologist.
