Welcome to the Santa Barbara Junior Orchestra!

Hello Friends,

What a marvelous year we have experienced! The addition of woodwinds and brass to the Junior Strings has expanded our sound and range to new heights. For our novice players, this new sound was a grand experience as well as being in an ensemble for the first time. Our more seasoned students have been great with helping them adjust to their new surroundings. All the students are such wonderful people. They demonstrate this character by sharing their knowledge with each other and by working together. It's a delight to watch this interaction.

Our program selections of classical music, pop tunes and chamber ensembles keep our students active and engaged. They always put forth their best effort. You can see the gleam in their eyes and the excitement in their faces when Team JO unifies their sound into one huge instrument.

Music has a way of bringing people together without speaking. When you hear a song, when you sing a song, one tends to smile. It places you in a better state of mind. To be a member of the community that helps expand the knowledge and special qualities of music is a privilege. Thank you for allowing me to share the subject that gives me continued joy.

Bienvenido a la Santa Barbara Orquesta Juvenil!

Hola Amigos,

And as a teacher and coach, she finds herself in the enviable position of being able to pass on to others the how-to of creating this loving relationship.

Welcome to the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony!

What a wonderful day to celebrate another great year!

Today is a celebration for the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, and for music. As you sit in the beautiful Lobero Theatre, you might have already spent some time in front of the Theatre at the “Hands-On” event. Perhaps you attended the high tea honoring many of the Youth Symphony’s celebrated heroes, heard your musician practicing today, or hummed the tunes from yesterday’s Junior Orchestra concert.

Not every concert-goer has this much musical preparation for a concert! I hope today’s music will leave you with an additional musical taste that you can take with you. Surely you will leave with an added amount of respect for our wonderful musicians and realize how much preparation by staff and volunteers goes into such an event.

Our SBYS seniors, playing their final concert, have been practicing and performing for years. Today might be an important concert for them, but most will be playing in a new ensemble, maybe in a new location, within a couple of months. Our fine staff at the Santa Barbara Symphony is already working on next year’s program, finding new collaborations and getting ready for the next wave of musicians readying themselves for the SBYS experience.

Year-end concerts leave me feeling somewhat sad. It feels like the bittersweetness of finishing the last page of a great book. But the beauty of life as a musician or as a music lover, is that the next concert, the next song, the next season, is already being prepared. All are just waiting for someone to push the play button.

Thank you for being part of the SBYS family!

Andy Radford, Santa Barbara Youth Symphony Music Director

Moon Man Whitehead

Moon Man Whitehead is an Honors student at Dos Pueblos High School where he performs with his high school's orchestra. He also performs with the Dos Pueblos Chamber Ensemble, an ensemble he along with his younger brother Clear Water co-founded. He began his musical study at age 4 with Mr. Brown in the Santa Barbara Drum Circle. In addition to playing a myriad of instruments, Moon Man generously volunteers his time for a variety of music education and non-profit organizations. He and his brother have been inspired to found their own personally-funded community organizations, including Isla Vista Warm, The Fare Well Group, and Jesus Loves You Sandwich Club. Upon completing high school Mr. Moon Man hopes to continue his education at Westmont.

Moon Man wholeheartedly thanks and dedicates his performance to Miss Laury Woods & Mr. Gary Woods and Sargent Robert Guthrie & Lady Guthrie. He also thanks his learning disability counselors for their unwavering support of his music education and continuous involvement in his life.

Lorenz Chen, a sophomore at Dos Pueblos High School is the youngest of three children. Lorenz began studying the piano at age 7, and then started playing the cello at age 10. He currently studies cello with Ervin Klinkon. In 2012, he joined the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, and has been a member of the cello section throughout his entire high school career. In 2014, he was a full scholarship recipient of the MERIT program at the Music Academy of the
