They say that you don’t miss the water until the well runs dry; and we know that is true. The local church isn’t a well gone dry, but one we haven’t been able to get to it for awhile. Each day that I go to the office I think of the woman at the well in the Bible. She had to go to the well alone every day; and still she met Jesus there. We have been given an opportunity to reevaluate our priorities and what really matters in life. There seems to be a lot of new affirmations that faith and fellowship really are among our greatest treasures. As your pastor I have been so proud of our congregation. You are keeping the faith, and faith is keeping you. The night of this troubled time is drawing closer to daybreak, and soon we will face the challenges of readjusting to worshiping and serving side by side again. The ministry that God has allowed us to have during these days has been amazing; and I pray that this will be the beginning of even greater things that we will do in the name of Jesus. I pray that you will be blessed with the awareness of Christ’ presence; and that you will be protected while we wait. Food Pantry News

It was with regret and a heavy heart that we had to cancel our Mobile Food Pantry in April. We anticipate having to cancel the Tuesday, May 12th food pantry as well.

With signs on our church doors, we have directed any who may have come to our pantry to other resources in our area who are not a mobile Food Pantry.

This has been an especially hard decision to make in light of the fact that we know many people in our county are food insecure now more than ever. However, in discussing with Second Harvest how to carry out the pan-try with social distancing, it became obvious that their requirements would put our regular volunteers, many of whom are over the age of 65, at potential risk while trying to register and distribute food to those who might come. Furthermore, we are under the current expectations of Holston Conference that we not allow large group gatherings on church property until further notice.

In lieu of being able to carry out the food pantry, we have made the commitment that any month in which we must cancel the pantry, we will donate to Second Harvest the amount that we would normally remit to them. We hope that this will assist Second Harvest to meet the needs of the increasing number of those they are serving.

God willing, hopefully we will soon resume this vital ministry in service to our community. I know that it will be once again generously supported by the members of FUMC by your gifts- as a volunteer; by donating a food item we request each month; and by your monetary donations that make this ministry possible.

May God Bless all of you who remain mindful of the needs of others!

Holy Stitchers: Please know that as soon as we are able, we will complete our 2020 sewing project for Little Dresses for Africa. A two day sewing get together should allow us to complete outstanding work and get it ready for mailing. Hand and machine sewers will be needed. I will contact you when we can schedule dates.

MAY MISSION OF THE MONTH

REPAIRING HOMES, TRANSFORMING LIVES ASP provides one of the most rewarding structured service opportunities in the nation — bringing thousands of volunteers from around the country to rural Central Appalachia to repair homes for low-income families. Since 1969, we’ve made homes warmer, safer, and drier for families and provided transformational service experiences for volunteers. Last year, 16,231 volunteers served with ASP, providing critical repairs for 493 families and constructing over 60 new homes.

MISSION Appalachia Service Project is a Christian ministry, open to all people, that inspires hope and service through volunteer home repair and replacement in Central Appalachia.

VISION Appalachia Service Project envisions the eradication of substandard housing in Central Appalachia and the transformation of everyone who comes in contact with this ministry.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES • We believe that each person is a child of God imbued with dignity and worth. • We accept people right where they are and just the way they are.

• We believe that all people should be able to live in affordable, safe, and sanitary housing. • We are committed to witness through the good quality of our work and careful stewardship of our resources.

• We believe God calls people to serve others as volunteer partners in ministry and we will encourage their growth in faith as they answer this call.

• Where ASP is involved in local communities we will encourage, affirm, and support the fair and just treatment of people. We believe in ministering in the spirit of love, acceptance, and hopefulness.

On Saturday, April 11th the Easter Bunny was on the loose in our area! There were mysterious reports of yards being “egged” all over Elizabethton, Johnson City and even Piney Flats. Kids of all ages came outside their homes to find Easter baskets on the doorsteps and eggs hidden all over their lawn! Great big thanks to the Easter Bunnies for helping to spreading some joy throughout our community!!
