Table Setting will be held virtually for 2020. Sign up with your county educator to get the link to the contest. The contest will be held through Zoom on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at 10am. The day of the contest when you arrive in the zoom meeting, you will check-in. Please have your items for the 1 place setting stacked to the side or boxed, not pre-arranged. You will need to have a table area for 1 place setting. Exhibitors will need to have someone video you from a distance so that you and the table can be viewed. Parents and Volunteers may help the 4-Her carry items to area but will not be allowed to help 4-Her set up, or be in the area during the judging. During the judging, the 4-Her will set up and present the table setting to the judge by telling about their ideas and why they chose this particular theme. The 4-Hers should view themselves as a host and the judge as their guest. Exhibitors will have approximately 5 minutes to setup, 3 minutes to present their table, and 5 minutes for questions.

4-H members should plan their table setting using the following criteria: Choose a theme for the dinner/table setting (accessories may be used). Plan a menu which is suitable for the table setting. Type the menu and have it available for the judge. Set table correctly by using 1 place settings including: dinnerware, glassware, flatware must be used. Tablecloth, centerpiece and place mats are to be used.

Paper plates, plasticware, and paper napkins may be used.

Flatware and Dinnerware must be safe to eat from such as no glitter, glue etc. on eating surfaces.

Creativity is encouraged.

Judges will be looking for practical table settings using accepted rules of etiquette.

Judge will observe 4-H member during part or all of the time he/she is setting the table. Judge may visit with 4-H members and ask them questions about their table setting.

We will provided 2 practice zoom sessions for youth to make sure the videoing and sound works correctly.

The following rules for setting a table correspond to the numbers seen in the table setting illustration.

1. The flatware, plate, and napkin should be one inch from the edge of the table.

2. The plate is always in the center of the place setting.

3. The dinner fork is placed at the left of the plate.
