EDITORIAL
Welcome to the new look magazine. For several years we have been trying to improve
the quality of the print in the magazine. We hope you agree that by using the CAP printer
and an A5 format we have produced a magazine fit for the 21st century. Hopefully you
will find the print to be crisper and clearer. The A5 format produces a booklet which is
easier to hold and read. Over the next few months we will be finding the best way to
use the new printer and format, so if you have any suggestions for improvements, please
send them to the editorial board for consideration. Thank you for last month’s
contributions. Please keep sending us any news from the village.
Don’t forget to exercise your democratic rights and vote on the 2nd May for
Herefordshire Council elections, and, possibly, the 23rd May for the European Elections
The magazine is now back on the Simpson Hall website: http://www.simpsonhall.co.uk/
Free paper copies will continue to be delivered to all who live within the parish
boundary. If you do not live in the parish, you can access the magazine via the Simpson
Hall or Church website or ask for a copy to be emailed to your address.
If you would like an email copy, please send your email address to [email protected].
Please send us your contributions by 9am on the 20th of every month as well as any
dates for the Diary Page

BEWARE PLANT THIEVES
At 10.30 on Sunday, 14th April a vehicle slowed down outside our property, obviously looking at
which plants he would like to steal. Within 5 minutes, he had returned, and we caught him red
handed stealing an expensive plant.
We stopped him as he was about to load plants into his truck, a silver Nissan pick-up, registration
number: BLO3 OLJ. The police were informed, and the crime number is 239N140419

THE COPSE SHORT MAT BOWLING
In April, we played our first friendly match at Weobley. The two teams we sent
played two matches each losing 3 games to 1.
In a recent home match against Tarrington who are ranked 6th in their league,
we drew 2 games apiece.
As we have only been bowling for a year, this experience has increased our
knowledge and given us encouragement for the future. Further friendlies
against other clubs are in the pipeline.
We are very sorry to report the sad loss of one of our members, Kath Burns,
and offer our sincere condolences to Ray and his family.
THE GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEME
We can help with you with any of the following: Meals: We can deliver a hot meal to you from the Golf Club any weekday. Trips around the village and to town.
Running errands, such as fetching prescriptions, library books, shopping, Simple DIY jobs, be-friending, if you would like someone to talk to or give you advice. Socialising at the Coffee Morning or outings. Simple gardening in an emergency. If you need help or would like more information, contact Joe, tel: 760816, or email:
The Good Neighbour Scheme would like to thank all who came to solve the Murder
Mystery last month and, by doing so, raised £362 for us. Our only source of funds is a
grant from the Parish Council, so all donations are most welcome.

RUNNING THE RACE WITH GRACE
I don’t know about you, but when I was younger the goal of all things was to get what you wanted.
You may have to endure certain things in order to getting them, but that was just wasted time or
effort. The important thing was getting the thing that you wanted. For example, I trained once for
a javelin throwing competition and having put all the effort in, I entered the contest only to lose in
spectacular style. I considered all the effort I had put into it a waste of time as it hadn’t yielded the
desired result. I’m not knocking a sense of determination or ambition—far from it. I have come to
see that in truth, very few efforts we have made have really been a ‘waste of time’. I remember my
father’s friend encouraging him that ‘his boys’ (me and the two others) should be put into boxing
lessons. I listened to this conversation with great intensity! As they talked, the friend said: ‘Yes, you
should put them into boxing, because it builds character’. It was a terrible shame this conversation
ever took place, as afterwards we all ended up being encouraged to do so. I, being rather assertive
declined vigorously. After the pressure had dropped, I willingly joined the local boxing club of my
own choice. I have always been highly resistant to external pressure and, especially manipulation!
Nevertheless, I never forgot that phrase, ‘it builds character’. There is something to be said for this,
every experience I have had, I came slowly to realise that it was far from wasted. I wasn’t a very
gifted boxer either, but it did give me a sense of discipline and fitness. Every experience we have
had, every effort we make and every trial we endure helps make us what we are. I had often failed
to see this in those moments that I did not receive what I had aimed for.
St Paul was a man much afflicted by the usual delusions of grandeur. A quite brilliant student of
one of the finest scholars in Israel of his day (Gamaliel, Acts. 5.34). At the end of this endeavour,
Paul would have his life transformed. He wouldn’t come back with his prize of captured
Christians—he came back with a new perspective of himself and life. He would spend the rest of
his life discovering who he was in his new life having set out to reach the goal of serving God—
only to discover God had beaten him to it. God in Christ had come to him and met him on the
road of his life’s career. He had also discovered that his training in Jewish practice and education
came to be used by God in a way he could not have conceived of before his famous encounter.
Nothing from his past was lost—it became useful to him in other ways. As I look back over my life
before I became a Christian at the age of 25 (just shy of 20 years ago) I have come to see that a life
spent wisely is a life from selfish ambition and worldly vainglory transformed by the humble search
for humility and gratitude. At the end of his life, St Paul wrote this: ‘As for me, I am already being
poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I
have finished the race, I have kept the faith’ (2 Timothy. 4.6-7). In the end, the most important part
for living out your faith in God and what you hold dear is participating in the journey, to run the
race of life. It’s not about winning, it’s about the taking part and that every effort you make towards
it is not wasted. The Crocodile 8 (8.8miles), provides us an apt illustration, to remember that the
winning isn’t the most important thing, it’s the taking part and the true goal is to embrace it and
endure it with good grace and humility.

Messy Church Friday, 10th May from 3:30pm at the Simpson Hall
The theme is Noah’s Ark
We are back in the Simpson Hall for crafts, songs and celebration followed by tea. Finish about 5:30pm. Children: you must bring an adult with you. FREE! (Donations welcome on the day). No booking required.
The next Messy Church will be on 14th June
In April 21 children were in church with parents and carers to hear the story of Holy Week.
The children made Easter gardens, cards, crowns, nests and biscuits to take home. They decorated eggs to make Easter bunting for the display board in church and the grown-ups together created a beautiful poster declaring Jesus is Risen. We finished with an indoor picnic tea.
SECOND HAND BOOK SALE
We can now reveal that the Second Hand Book sale raised £900 for maintenance of the church. Sale of books over the 4 days and refreshments, and subsequent sale of books to a bookseller and generous donations all contributed to this final total. We also donated some books to charity shops. Thanks again to everyone who supported the sale. Paul & Mary Hilder
Burghill Church Tower
The tower is now encased in scaffolding and the stonemasons are working on the stone
work. The church clock was stopped deliberately when the internal repairs were
undertaken in December 2018 and owing to its delicate mechanism, it was decided not
to restart it until all the tower repairs have been completed. The clock will then be
professionally serviced and restarted, but not until August at the earliest.
Advance warning-as a fundraiser the PCC Events group will be running a competition to
“Guess the Time the Church clock Restarts”. Details will soon be available from PCC
members.

Plants with Scented Leaves
Whereas scented flowers in a garden tend to come and go in comparatively brief periods, leaves tend to be around for longer and can provide an equally fragrant experience, particularly following dew fall, rain or hot sun. Herbs are one of the more obvious examples of aromatic leaves, and between them offer a spectrum of different fragrances. Many make very attractive border perennials too. Take the feathery bronze foliage of Bronze Fennel, for instance, with its warm, lemony-liquorice scent and yellow flowers. Then contrast this with the apple-straw scent of Chamomile. Perhaps the most fragrant of herbs is the Lemon Verbena, originally brought to Europe for the perfume industry, whose foliage is intensely fresh and lemon scented. A similar (but sweeter and slightly less strong) scent can be gleaned from the smaller herbaceous herb, Lemon Balm. Our Lavender, meanwhile, needs no introduction. There are also some deliciously fragrant trees. The conifer known as the 'Incense cedar' (Calocedrus) has a rich, resinous fragrance, strongest in sunshine. Liquidambar, renowned for its vivid autumn leaf colours, has a warm, frankincense-like fragrance to its leaves. In spring, any of the 'Balsam Poplar' type poplars (including the variegated Populus x candicans 'Aurora') give off a most delicious fresh perfume, reminiscent of Magnolia flowers, as their new leaves unfurl. At the other end of the season, the Cercidiphyllum tree emits a strong scent of toffee in autumn as its leaves begin to colour pink and yellow. Because trees are tall, their scents are carried a fair distance - sometimes a hundred yards or more - down wind. For something smaller, there are many fragrant-leaved shrubs and perennials. The shrubby 'Sun Roses' (Cistus) have resinous and aromatic scents, particularly strong in sunshine, while the vigorous Rosa Eglanteria has leaves which are strongly apple scented. For an aromatic summer bedding feature, the ‘scented geraniums’ (types of aromatic pelargonium) between them offer minty, rose-lke, lemony or soapy fragrances. Sniff and enjoy! Dental Hygiene
On Saturday the 18 May, I will be holding a session on dental hygiene in the Simpson Hall. A friendly session with a local dental hygienist who will be teaching us how to look after our mouths at any stage of life - from babies to denture wearers! Helping you to prevent tooth decay and gum disease! ' In the session I'll be including: - Basic mouth features (just so people understand what parts I’m talking about), demonstrated on a huge model. - Brushing techniques, manual and powered tooth brushes and correct way of tooth brushing and demonstration of interdental cleaning - Importance of good oral hygiene and the effect it has on our overall health. - Any questions answered about oral health (so long I know the answer)!
