FOCUS ON WORSHIP

WORSHIP DURING THE SEASON OF EASTER: Easter is the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ,

the “queen of feasts,” of the Church year. Easter celebrates an event so great that it cannot be limited to one

day. Thus, Easter consists of fifty days--a “week of weeks.” Beginning with the Vigil of Easter and

continuing through-out the Easter season, up to Pentecost Sunday. The candelabras are lit; and the lighted

Paschal Candle is appropriately placed near the Gospel side of the altar.

The theme of the season is the Resurrection of Christ, looking towards Christ’s Restoration to His Heavenly

Glory. The resurrection of Jesus, which Easter celebrates, is a foundation of the Christian faith. – The

resurrection established Jesus as the Son of God and is cited as proof that God will judge the world in

righteousness. God has given Christians "a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ

from the dead". Christians, through faith in the working of God are spiritually resurrected with Jesus so that

they may walk in a new way of life.

PASCHAL CANDLE: The Paschal candle is placed in the chancel and lighted for each liturgy during the fifty

days of Easter. At times other than the Easter season, the Paschal candle is kept in its stand near the baptismal

font as a visual reminder of the connection between Baptism and Easter. It is lighted for each celebration of

Baptism.

A Note from Pastor Fred

May 9, 1970

On that beautiful day I walked down the aisle of Christ Church Cathedral in

Springfield, MA and married Lesley Ann Cole. It was a pretty big wedding

given that Lesley is an only daughter. I accused her mother of sending

invitations out to 'Occupant' in a ten mile radius of their house.

Now it is forty-nine years later, two children and five grandchildren are in our

lives. We have moved nine times and I have lost count of the cars that have

come and gone through our lives. We have hundreds of Kodachrome slides up

in the attic that we have talked about putting on a CD. It will probably never

happen. Over our piano is the first item we bought together before we were

married, a still life of musical instruments. In the hall stands a grandfather clock

I bought for her as a wedding present.

I have often said that we have never had a fight, we merely have furious

disagreements. We have had our moments of silence and moments of silly

laughter. These days we go a little slower and are surprised at how we look

when we look into a mirror. As the days and months and years go by, I realize

what a gift God gave me.

And so in front of everyone at St. Luke, Happy 49th Anniversary sweetie, I would

do it all over again.

In Peace,

Pastor Fred

We have a great chancel choir and a great handbell choir. Many of these folks have been choir members for years, but we are always looking for newcomers! If you’ve previously sang or played handbells in a church choir, sang in a high school choir or college choir, we invite you to come check us out on Thursday evenings. If you’ve never sung anywhere, you are still invited. Can you play an instrument? Musicians are also invited. Please consider joining us. It's a fun way to be involved in church life and to contribute to our worship service. I hope to see you at one of our choir rehearsals!

SANCTUARY FLOWERS

on the Altar on Sunday?

If so, please sign up on the

Flower Chart in the Fellowship Hall.

Questions?

Please see the information below

or call the Office at 804-272-0486.

Altar Flower Dedications

The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are used

to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend Worship services.

Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a

special person, an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event.

More than one person may find a certain date important so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.

If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed

directly from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church.

The flowers are yours to take home after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or home-

bound members.

Please return the container the flowers are in to the church at your convenience. You may sign up on the chart located in the

fellowship hall.

The Flower Chart Calendar

The 2019 Flower Calendar is hanging in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday Altar Flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. Just let us know and we will automatically add your info to the Flower Calendar each year. If you have any questions or would like more information about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 ext. 1 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.
