CHURCH STREET — WATERLOO, IL — 618.939.6480 [email protected] immanuelwaterloo.org From Our Administrative PastorDear Brothers and Sisters of Immanuel, A few months ago I wrote about some heroes of the Lutheran Reformation. These folks arent very well known, but God used them to change and impact many lives with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. True, these folks lived a long time ago. But their lives can still inspire us and demonstrate the power of Gods grace in Christ. The person I want to write about today is George the Pious, the Margrave (ruler) of Branden- burg-Ansbach. George was born in Ansbach in 1484 to Margrave Frederick the Elder and his wife, Sophia. Although raised as a Roman Catholic, George was impressed by the teachings of Martin Luther, especially after he witnessed Luthers refusal to recant his writings at the Diet of Worms in 1521. Youll recall that after Luther was asked to take back his teachings, he replied, I am bound by the Scriptures and my conscience has been taken captive by the Word of God, and I am neither able nor willing to recant, since it is neither safe nor right to act against conscience. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me.George was also moved by the preaching of Lutheran pastors in the city of Nuremberg and Luthers translation of the New Testament in 1522. After meeting Luther in 1524 and corresponding with him, George became a devout Lutheran and worked tirelessly for the spread of the Gospel in the lands he ruled. And while George was impressed by Luthers courage at the Diet of Worms in 1521, he himself demonstrated great courage when he and other Lutheran princes met with Charles V, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, in Augsburg in 1530 to present their confession of faith. This confession is now called the Augsburg Confession and is a teaching standard for Lutherans and other Christians. At first the emperor refused to hear the confession or have any discussion about theological concerns. He commanded the princes to stop the Gospel preaching in the city. When George and Philip of Hesse stated that the Emperor couldnt dictate to their consciences, the Emperor became furious. According to Johannes Walter in his book Der Reichstag zu Augsburg, 1530, George stepped forward calmly, looked the Emperor in the eyes, and said, Before I would deny my God and His Gospel, I would rather kneel down here before Your Imperial Majesty and let you cut off my head. The Emperor was shocked and stammered in broken German, Not cut off head! Not cut off head!A few days later, on June 25, 1530, the confession was presented and read to the Emperor. He wasnt happy, but the Lutheran princes survived their confrontation with him and left Augsburg having boldly confessed their reliance on Jesus for salvation and their adherence to Gods Word. Again, this all happened a long time ago. But it still speaks volumes us today. It speaks to the need for Christ, the cost of discipleship and the power of the Holy Spirit when bear- ing witness to Jesus. God grant us courage like that of those Lutheran princes. A courage that says in the face of ridicule and anger at the Christian faith, Jesus is my Savior! He is the way, the truth and the life, and I trust in him.God bless you richly! From Our Administrative Pastor…

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Immanuel, A few months ago I wrote about some heroes of the Lutheran Reformation. These folks aren’t very well known, but God used them to change and impact many lives with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. True, these folks lived a long time ago. But their lives can still inspire us and demonstrate the power of God’s grace in Christ. The person I want to write about today is George the Pious, the Margrave (ruler) of Branden-burg-Ansbach. George was born in Ansbach in 1484 to Margrave Frederick the Elder and his wife, Sophia. Although raised as a Roman Catholic, George was impressed by the teachings of Martin Luther, especially after he witnessed Luther’s refusal to recant his writings at the Diet of Worms in 1521. You’ll recall that after Luther was asked to take back his teachings, he replied, “I am bound by the Scriptures and my conscience has been taken captive by the Word of God, and I am neither able nor willing to recant, since it is neither safe nor right to act against conscience. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me.” George was also moved by the preaching of Lutheran pastors in the city of Nuremberg and Luther’s translation of the New Testament in 1522. After meeting Luther in 1524 and corresponding with him, George became a devout Lutheran and worked tirelessly for the spread of the Gospel in the lands he ruled. And while George was impressed by Luther’s courage at the Diet of Worms in 1521, he himself demonstrated great courage when he and other Lutheran princes met with Charles V, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, in Augsburg in 1530 to present their confession of faith. This confession is now called the Augsburg Confession and is a teaching standard for Lutherans and other Christians. At first the emperor refused to hear the confession or have any discussion about theological concerns. He commanded the princes to stop the Gospel preaching in the city. When George and Philip of Hesse stated that the Emperor couldn’t dictate to their consciences, the Emperor became furious. According to Johannes Walter in his book Der Reichstag zu Augsburg, 1530, George stepped forward calmly, looked the Emperor in the eyes, and said, “Before I would deny my God and His Gospel, I would rather kneel down here before Your Imperial Majesty and let you cut off my head.” The Emperor was shocked and stammered in broken German, “Not cut off head! “1Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” - Hebrews 12 Pastor Troup took some time to talk about a brave individual from history as well as the bravery of Christians today in the face of persecution. We might be tempted to ask, “Why bother?” As a kid I didn’t care so much for history. The older I get, the more fascinating history has become. More than that, it has become more encouraging. If you look near the front of your Lutheran Service Book or at some prayer resources that list feasts and festivals that we remember throughout the church year, you see a lot of names. Some of the names come from Scripture, some are martyrs, and some are just simple people who did important things. And here and there, you see an event. All of them, though, teach and encourage us in our Christian faith. We remember the saints...the Christians who have come and gone before us...not in worship, but in how they boldly proclaimed Christ. We look to there example of looking to Christ, and we find strength to run the race. For example, in May alone we remember St. Philip and St. James, Apostles (1), Athanasius of Alexandria, Pastor and Confessor (2), Friedrich Wyneken, Pastor and Missionary (4), Frederick the Wise, Christian Ruler (5), C.F.W. Walther, Theologian (7), Job (9), Cyril and Methodius, Missionaries to the Slavs (11), Emperor Constantine, Christian Ruler, and Helena, Mother of Constantine (21), Esther (24), Bede the Venerable, Theologian (25), The Ascension of Our Lord (30), The Visitation (31). During the church year we usually remember events involving Christ in particular: incarnation, birth, circumcision, baptism, death, resurrection, ascension, and so on, but nearly every day of the year we remember people who boldly professed Christ crucified and raised again for us!

You are not alone in this world. Your faith is not new or made up. God took on flesh to know His creation as intimately as is possible between a creator and His creation. Before that incarnation and still today, God gives you people who, like you, sin and fall short of God’s glory, but who also trusted in Christ for forgiveness, peace, and joy. You have a whole host of people cheering you on with Christ at the finish line that we will see with our own eyes on the last Day when Christ raises you in glory as He, Himself, is raised. Praise be to God! Christ is Risen! Blessings on your day!

A Note from Our Music Director...

May Music-musings... Immanuel's 2018-19 Music Season ends in the month of May. The various choirs will share "end of the season" selections throughout this month. It is a joy and a privilege to work with these individuals who give of their time to attend practices and then provide special music at worship services. These choirs include the Adult Choir, PS-8th Sunday School, Agape Ringers and Immanubells. During the music season we are also blessed with a variety of instrumentalists who add much to our worship. Please take time to thank God for Immanuel's Music Ministry. To Him be the glory! Serving Him,

BASIC Youth Group News!

THANK YOU! That’s it for this month! THANK YOU to all who helped in any way and/or attended our wonderful & uplifting Women’s Mini-Retreat. It was our 8th annual….can you believe it? During this retreat, Rosie touched on many different verses and made this point about our main theme verse (Ephesians 4:1-3)… Peace is something we are “eager to maintain!” I don’t know about you, but this can be very hard for me sometimes (well, a lot of times!) Her point was the we cannot look within ourselves to find the bond of peace, we look to Jesus as He has already provided that peace we need.

There were 74 ladies in attendance. It was a morning full of delicious food, beautiful music, and a peaceful message. Thanks be to God! Be sure to stop by the narthex for a cup of coffee and a homemade treat each Sunday! YUM! Any donations (not required, but appreciated) will support local missions. See the sign up sheet on the bulletin board if you would like to help out. Preparing my heart, Lisa Clamors “How good and pleasant it is when sisters live together in unity!” Psalm 133:1

Greetings from the Women’s Christian Ministry (WCM)!

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at 7:00 pm in the overflow room. All ladies are welcome!

An Update from Our Missionary Partners

Funke News: Life Together During a recent missionary retreat, we learned about the concept of “convivence: living life together” and the importance of convivence in cross-cultural ministry. As we live life together, we are called to help one another, learn from one another, and feast/celebrate with one another. This past month we have seen this kind of “convivence” emerge in numerous settings, and each one has been a blessing to us. New Missionary Opportunities One of our many blessings this year has been our relationship with Amber Reed, the DCE Intern in Shinyanga, and her husband, Austin. We are so thankful for their help, their perspective, and their presence at many events and celebrations. In June Amber’s internship will conclude, and they will return to the U.S. so they can live closer to their families and possibly even start a family of their own. Thus, in June the Reeds’ furniture will be relocated to a house recently built by the diocese for the purpose of housing missionaries. The Reeds’ car will be available to any new missionaries to the area. And when we transition back to the states in 2020, our house and car are also a bonus to anyone called to serve God's people in this area. This month a retired teacher contacted us expressing interest in potentially teaching at Mwadui Lutheran Secondary School. She will determine in the next two weeks whether God is calling her to teach here. Please keep her in prayer as she contemplates this big decision. In light of all of this, we hope to build a team of missionaries who can be a source of help and encouragement to one another and to the larger community. We would love for more people to experience the hospitality, joy, energy, and wisdom of this Tanzania community. Do you know any teachers (preschool, elementary, or high school), nurses, doctors, chaplains, social workers, DCEs, deaconesses, computer gurus, agricultural specialists, or childcare workers who might be interested in serving in Tanzania? Our dream is for potential new missionaries to come visit sometime between now and July, begin fundraising this summer, and hopefully start Swahili language school this fall/winter. We have prepared one-page descriptions of these opportunities that you can download at www.globallutheranoutreach.com/blog/funke. If you know of someone who might be interested or have other ideas for how we can get the word out, please email us at [email protected]. Opening of New Diakonia Center About three years ago we sponsored a deaconess student study tour to Moshi. During that trip deaconess student and former teacher at Mwadui Lutheran Secondary School, Festa Brown, saw so many opportunities for diaconal ministry, but knew that many aspects of ministry require money. She saved up money and bought a piece of land on which she could start a farm. We went out to visit the property in 2015 and gave $175 so she could start building a house on the land for workers. On Sunday, March 24, 2019, we were welcomed back to the land for the official opening of the Diakonia Center Bethel Lyabusalu. We celebrated by singing, praying, reading Scripture, planting trees, and feasting. We praise God and rejoice that Festa's dream has become a reality. Form 6 Graduation Finally on March 30,we celebrated the graduation of our Form 6 (junior college) students. Since we just started Form 5 & 6 classes a few years ago, this was only our second class of Form 6 students, but the class size has already grown from 9 graduates last year to 25 this year. Praise the Lord! We loved being able to celebrate with them and pray that God will guide and strengthen them as they continue preparing for their national exams. This month has been full of Christian fellowship, and we look forward to more “convivence” in the coming month. Vacation Bible School June 17-21, 2019 9-11:45 am Co-directed by Veronica Demski & Lisa Clamors Immanuel, Waterloo, and Holy Cross, Wartburg, will be joining forces again for a fun-filled week on a Miraculous Mission!

VBS Safety Policy: To ensure the safety of our children, parents will be asked to come into the church for pick up at the conclusion of VBS daily. You will find your children with their class in their pew. Preschool classes will have a sign in/out sheet. For older classes, we ask that you verbally communicate with their teacher when picking up your child. Children will not be released to older siblings. Thank you for helping us keep your children safe! Note to parents, guardians and friends of VBS: There is no fee for VBS. Each student receives a t-shirt (which costs us about $5) and each family will receive a music CD (about $5). If you would like to underwrite VBS costs, you may make donations to Immanuel Lutheran Church and write VBS in the memo space. There will also be an of-fering to support a local mission during our VBS week, and you may help us with that mission. If you would like to volunteer in other ways, please fill out the form below.
