Are they Runnin, Rustin, Restored or Ridden? Members machinery. The Editors 1976 BMW R100s Restoration

Some History: May 1976 saw the last production run of the /6 series, produced from 1974. The famed R90s, now an astute collectors machine, was replaced by the R100s, and the designation now identified as the /7. The /7 refers to the evolutionary development for the long serving designation “247” BMW boxer engine, a 2 valve per cylinder horizontally opposed “boxer” engine, coupled to a 5-speed gear box and shaft drive. At a casual glance, the bikes appear the same, but cosmetic differences such as the change from “round” to “square” rocker covers, flush fuel filler cap, and colour scheme changes were the easiest identifiable items. Dell’Orto transitioned to Bing constant velocity diaphragm carburettors, which some BMW loyalists thought a reverted step. Ignition was capacitor discharge points. Increased from 898cc to 980cc and Nicasil lined bores were the major engine upgrades. As with BMW at the time, innovations were not rushed, and many parts carried over from the /6, such as brakes, seat pans, side covers, frame design, forks, to the point where most were completely interchangeable. The flagship 1977 R100RS of the /7 series carried BMW’s wind tunnel tested and designed full Ferring, a step that caught many other manufacturers by surprise, and a change of different direction that changed touring design for many brands forever. The R100s, carries the same bikini Ferring as the prior R90s did, over 60Kph to 150Kph, it does and amazing job of removing buffeting, and holding the weight off wrists and body, twist the throttle, one is required to tuck down and start hugging the tank. The RS negates this, all the way to over 110Mph, this was the world’s first, and at the time, premier, sports tourer. Now, to put prices in perspective, in 1976, an R100s cost as much or more than some cars, at about $4,200. Japanese and English equivalents were considerably cheaper, but BMW’s renown for devouring long distances, reliability, lack of complexity ensuring durability ease of maintenance and repair, consistent quality build and comfort compensated. Enough of History…….. where am I heading? Well, I bought my 100s in 2004 off the 3rd owner, a friend the late Bernie Shailer’s, Zav, a mad bugger of East European decent. When I went to look at it, it had languished in a shed for nearly 4 years, virtually unused, covered in dust, and items stacked on and around it. After dragging it out, checking most things, using jumper leads, it fired up, intermittently running on one cylinder. Did not stop me going for a ride any way, I had to get to the servo for fresh fuel and pump tyres up! Anyway, a deal was done for $4,000, more than I wanted to pay, but became rather enthralled and attached to it after I got it going. As an early 1976 build, Australian delivered R100s’s are not common, 77 to 80 there are quite a few. Mine is within the first 250 off the line. This does not equate to collectability in a big dollar since, newer R100s variants are more desired, but with all things a little different, one day who knows. The bike was purchased new by a pilot who took it to Cairns, and on return from stints in New Guinea would tour around the region. When his mate who stored it moved to Canberra, the bike went with him. Owner 2 did not use the bike, it at for some time. When he did decide to get the bike on the road, he seized the engine, the bike was dropped and was relegated again to sit. Later, a rebuild was undertaken, plus an average paint job. On my acquiring the bike, straight to Michael Scheenering, service, brake lines, running sweetly, I rode it a fair bit, with occasional spark problems. About 6 years ago, the biggest expense after purchase was a full front fork rebuild including re-chroming. So why is my much-loved “S” in pieces? It copped some water in the Murwillumbah floods last year, so why not return it to respectable condition? Adversity to opportunity.

A full restoration is now underway, Michael and I stripped the bike down, parts distributed to assorted repairers and suppliers. Club member Bill McColluch did a fantastic job hydro blasting all the alloy and some other parts. I was prepared to acquire replacements, but the final finish was a rebirth, the alloy now carries a beautiful lustre. I will do a feature on hydro blasting soon, so members are aware of the process and outcomes. Daryl, a keen bike rider himself, from Tweed Powder Coating in Enterprise Ave did the sub and main frames plus a host of small parts. As usual, I am very happy with his customer service and final product. The pics above show the final product. Below are some other bits and pieces. Why 2 tanks and 6 side covers? Watch this space, one tank and cover pair and going to have something a little different, actually very different.

Krauser MKM 1000. Looks like a BMW? Is a BMW, well if BMW is the Labrador of bikes, you know, does a lot of things well, but bit too friendly and not much bite, the Krauser is the German Shepard, still in the same family, but with serious teeth and attitude to

match, but highly trainable. As with the R100RS that it was bread from, provides loyal service. The MKM is considered the Holy Grail of the modern generation of BMW’s. Arguably, only 1 or 2 BMW could be more collectable, like the R32. Michael Krauser worked in BMW car dealerships in post war Germany yet was renowned for prowess on the track with 2 wheels, particularly on BMWs, earning factory backing. With out getting to involved, Michael sidelined in building race motors, luggage for bikes and later complete track bikes. The Krauser name became synonymous in Europe for quality baggage, and with his mechanical and engineering expertise, a range of modifications for BMW’s such as over head cams, 4 valve heads, capacity increase kits, gear ratio kits, and one of rarest items, turbos. Fuel tanks to replace the standard side covers for extended touring. Many of his products were backed by BMW, sold through dealerships as well as independently. Enter the MKM, a BMW endorsed machine, computer designed gusseted frame featuring 56 thin wall tubes, a precursor to the modern trellis style frame. The one-piece Ferring and seat pan and body work, custom light weight fuel tank shed additional weight. Wheel base was extended, fork rake increased, stanchions lowered, handling was rated in the day as second to none. Specially designed rear set pegs and brake / gear levers allowed for a combination of road and track ability with comfort a priority. To comply the Bikes for road use, a difficult process in Germany, many stock BMW parts were used, and the bike identified as a BMW. Such was Michael Kruser standing with BMW. In a typical 1980’s fashion, the frame was painted what was described as “puke” purple. The striking colours reflected Krauser racing livery of the day. Being so expensive when new, of the 200 produced, well to do elite like Colin Forbs (forbs magazine / aircraft) were the main purchasers. Series 1 MKM bikes with the early ATE brakes are the most sort after, estimates of around 35 ??? made, the series 2, with Brembo brakes and other updates, as seen at Ray Owens Concourse above, are more likely to become available to collectors. A lot more can be learnt on sites like www.motorcycleclassics.com, and Krauser luggage and equipment is still widley available for a large range of bikes, particularly European. Many aftermarket “period” BMW / Krauser products command very high prices and are very difficult to locate, like auxiliary tanks designed to replace the side covers.

Let us go Tit for Tat Why don't women blink during foreplay? They don't have time.

What do you call a letter from a feminist? Hate male What takes up 12 parking spaces? 6 Women drivers

Why did God make women? You think he's gonna wash the dishes? Why do so few men end up in Heaven? They never stop to ask directions

Why are all jokes about women one-liners? So men can understand them Why do men whistle when they're sitting on the toilet? It helps them remember which end they need to wipe.

What did God say after creating man? I can do so much better.

After much research, I have decided on a painter, a company in Nerang who have several good tradespeople, one of whom is proficient in the magic art of hand formed pinstriping. Their bread and butter work attains to motorcycle accident and insurance, that’s the food on the table, Restoration is their passion, some of the bikes at Ray Owens will attest to this fact. I’m not going for concourse perfection, deliberately retaining some damaged scuffed and imperfect parts, they are a part of the bike, some of the story, so why remove them? Returning this bike to “new” for me has some detraction. This is intentionally functional restoration. Any way, if I wanted a new 1976 BMW R100s, all original BMW and OEM supplied parts are available to construct an entirely brand-new bike from scratch. That is another story I will feature.

Departure time was earlier for this run, a fact lost upon some members (self-included), but with spectacular skies above, gentle crispness in the air, riding gods provided perfect conditions. The main group travled a convoluted route to Canungra, as did many of the tardy stragglers. Well why not? A full morning to ride uninhibited by weather and relatively unimpeded by traffic. On to the concourse, an annual spectacular hosted and organised by the Historical Motorcycle Club of Qld. (HMCQ) at Canungra Showgrounds, after many years to Mt Tamborine. Other entities support the event, Shannon’s Insurance, Honda 4 Club, Team Moto BMW as examples. Attached to the show and shine is a swap meet, where some of our members acquired some parts. Darren did particularly well for himself finding some parts to continue fixing up his bike. Prior to even accessing the arena of entered show machines, the parking paddock overflowed with modern and classics, beautifully restored to rough or ratted, all breads encompassing the diversity of two wheels. Many uncommon models provided as much interest as the ones inside.

A seller displayed a range of mini “monkey” bikes, 50cc or similar capacity Hondas and Kawasaki. Many of these are road registerable, highly collectable and rare. Honda prolifically manufactured throughout the 1970’s, but some “specials” or limited releases command big money. The motorised wheelchair-built post WW1 are extremely scarce particularly in Australia. I did a write up on one a couple of years ago in the mag, look it up, the history is fascinating.

Into the arena, where the creme de la crème of perfection, sweaty barn finds, honestly original, modified, raced, hand built, massed produced, dirt, road, track; any possible genera of pre ‘85 two-wheel form was entered. As they say a picture is worth a couple of words, yet limited by space, I am only able to include a snippet of the eye candy on offer. Sorry boys, no room for pics

of the girls 😊 Ladies, all the men there were very unattractive, I did not wish to risk damaging my camera, no pics available.

After searing the ogles on polished chrome and gorgeous rear ends, sprung and ridged that is, the troops were rounded up, command given, and the road bidden our greetings. A quick rundown the Nerang Murwillumbah Road, Advancetown Hotel came into view, a required, no, mandatory is the better word, stop for refreshments. Per usual, live Sunday Afternoon entertainment was on offer, the blues-based band gigging was excellent, making the stop more than worthwhile.

From Advancetown, a genteel scenic run through to Numinbah, a fantastic road hampered by a ridiculously low speed limits, tin tops and worst or all, motorhomes. Lucky for broken lines and those little skinny motorcycle overtaking lanes between the 2

white lines 😉 A few eyebrows raised as the bikes rolled into the park, but the kids enjoyed the spectacle for sure. As we have become accustomed too, Phil what had prepared looked amazing, tasted even better. Some big thanks are awarded to Phil cooking, and Matt for ensuring the whole lot arrived safely. It is a magic place to enjoy luncheon and a drink, tall gums, the mountains surrounding the perimeter. The air was fresh, awash with the aromas of the surrounding bush.
