Missions Committee Update The Missions Committee met several weeks ago and voted to discontinue the Thursday Food Pantry
distribution. The committee is so appreciative of the many volunteers and donations that have
made this outreach possible through the years. The ministry could not have been successful without
you! The decision was based on several factors. The numbers have decreased from 30-50 per week
to 5-10 per week. Also, when the Food Pantry began, there was only the Food Bank for those in
need and United Ministries, on a very limited basis. Both of those ministries have expanded their
hours. Salvation Army now is open Monday through Thursday. Immanuel Lutheran Church is also
providing food two days a week and is a much more accessible location for those who walk.
Main Street is dedicated to missions – local and international. The committee will be sponsoring
monthly food drives for items needed at United Ministries and other local ministries beginning in
June. Main Street has also partnered with United Ministries with small home repairs. Glenn Williams
heads up our Roshelley Project and works with Rosemary Bell of Greenwood United Ministries for re-
ferrals.
The committee is also excited to be sponsoring two trips to Honduras in the next nine months. A
construction team will be going in October under the leadership of Kathy Kelly (**see article on
page 12) and a medical team is being put together for January under the leadership of Steve Skin-
ner and Kathy Kelly. Monetary support is needed for the medical team and can be given through
the church office. If you have ideas for mission opportunities, please contact Mark Robirds, chair of
Missions committee, or Kathy Kelly, program coordinator in the office.
Epworth’s Annual
Mother’s Day
Offering Sunday, May 14, 2017 Steven’s growth at Epworth has meant more than
just being the tallest boy in his cottage.
Epworth Mother’s Day Offering Helps Children like Steven
Steven is the youngest boy in the middle school cottage, but he is one of the tallest boys in the cot-tage. Steven came to Epworth last fall from a stressed family system, one where he experienced neglect so severe that he was removed from his home by the Department of Social Services. In those first few weeks, he did not bond right away with the other boys in the cottage and you would often see him off by himself. As the weeks went by, Steven began to experience the stability of a safe and secure home. Steven appreciated having plenty to eat and a comfortable place to sleep. He bonded with his cottage parents who gave him the space to be by himself but continued to encourage him to be more engaged at Epworth and at school. Months after his arrival, Steven’s growth spurt is still going strong. He has developed close friendships with the other boys and is often seen playing basketball instead of being alone. His grades are improving, he loves science, and he has a new dream of being a paleontologist when he grows up. He still has a lot of growth in front of him, but with each day at Epworth, he is walking with more confidence into the future.
Our role as Methodists is to make sure that on Mother’s Day and every day, the children at Epworth
have everything they need to be loved and to grow up happy and healthy. Since Epworth does
not receive conference funds (apportionments), this is our opportunity to support this ministry. On
Mother’s Day, special offering envelopes will be provided in the bulletins or you can make your a
secure credit care donation by visiting www.epworthchildrenshome.org.

by Lee Robirds, Congregational Nurse STAT FACTS
Two studies recently published online suggest that diet drinks may be linked to increased risk for
stroke and dementia. Both studies were observational in design, meaning they don’t show cause
and effect; they merely show an association among the factors being studied (almost an “Oh, by
the way, did you notice this?” association). The researchers studied subjects enrolled in the now-
famous Framingham Heart Study, looking at food consumption between 1991-2001, and then re-
cording the health status of the subjects ten years later.
The April 20 study published online in Stroke showed that consumption of one can of diet soda or
more each day was associated with a three times increased risk for stroke and dementia over a 10-
year follow-up period compared with individuals who drank no artificially sweetened beverages. In
Alzheimer’s and Dementia on March 5, using the same subject group, it was noted that consump-
tion of either sugar-sweetened or artificially-sweetened drinks, including both sodas and fruit juices,
revealed a decrease in brain volume for the middle age subjects.
The issue with these studies is that they are observational, not true double-blind cause and effect
experiments. Was it the diet sodas that actually increased the possibility of stroke and dementia? Or
did unhealthy people simply gravitate more to these drinks than healthy people? Or did the people
drinking sugar-sweetened drinks die from heart disease during the study period and not make it to
the 10-year point in the study? More study is definitely needed considering the popularity of sugar-
sweetened and artificially-sweetened drinks.
“These two papers should certainly sound warning bells, but neither are suggesting we can take just
one simple step of cutting out sodas and or juice to reduce our risk of stroke or dementia. We must
look at the whole picture of diet and exercise, of which this is just one very small piece," said Dr.
Keith Fargo, PhD, of the Alzheimer’s Association. "Of the two papers, it is easier to grasp that high
sugar intake is not doing good things to the brain, but there is growing evidence in the literature that
diet drinks are not necessarily the panacea that some once might have believed them to be.”
Dr. Fargo’s solution: “It’s better to skip both and just drink water.” Wise words indeed.

A FEW NOTES FROM JOHN
I am writing these thoughts the week after Easter Sunday. It was a grand day of
celebration. We were comfortably full in both services and everyone entered into the spirit
of celebration. The Praise Band led the 8:30 service in lifting up the praise song “Hosanna
(Praise Is Rising)” with enthusiastic joy. At 11:00, the Chancel Choir sang “Resurrection,” a
medley of hymns celebrating Christ’s victory over death, and “Mercy Tree,” a wonderful
proclamation of the meaning of Christ’s victory over death. We closed the service with the
“Hallelujah Chorus.” All in all, it was a terrific Sunday!
If you were in the 11:00 service, you may have noticed that Emily Wallace, our ac-
companist, played everything on the piano. You may have heard by now that the reason
was that we had a great deal of difficulty with the organ on the Wednesday night before
Easter Sunday. The problem is that the electronics inside the console are wearing out.
When you consider that the console is almost 80 years old (it was installed prior to World
War II!), it is easy to understand why we are having problems. We have already had the
organ evaluated and a proposal made for refurbishment and repair by one prominent U.S.
pipe organ manufacturer. We will have another one soon. (Pipe organ companies are ex-
tremely busy before Easter.) When we have more information, we will discuss our options.
By the way, we are extremely fortunate to have an accompanist as talented and
versatile as Emily. She moved everything to piano beautifully. Please take time to express
your appreciation to her.
And we are also fortunate to have an extremely versatile instrumentalist for our 8:30
service in Ken Kittle. Ken plays great, and keeps the Praise Band on track (pun intended).
Ken has recorded a CD of inspirational music; if you come to the 8:30 service, you may
have heard it playing as prelude music. Those CD’s are available for the nominal fee of
$10. If you would like to have one, please talk to Ken.
As we move into the summer, please let me know if you are
looking for a way to be involved In Music Ministry, especially the
Chancel Choir. I’m looking forward to the time when we have
to come up with a plan to expand the Choir Loft!
Walk on with Christ!
John

Be a Fellowship Friend A new opportunity to serve has pre-

simply means you would be a new
church member’s contact person/friend
to assist them as they settle into the Main
Street family. Signup sheets will soon be
passed around Sunday school classes or
you may call the office at 229-7551 if you
would like to volunteer.
And, remember, as the Beatles would
say, “We get by with a little help from our
friends.”
Summer Reading Books Check out these uplifting and well-written books
in the church library.
1. “Falling into Place” by Hattie Kauffman is
about her impoverished, dysfunctional child-
hood and how she not only survived but made
history as the first Native American journalist.
Hattie worked for twenty years as a correspon-
dent and news anchor for ABC and CBS news.
She carries her readers through her painful di-
vorce and Christian conversion.
2. “Showing Time” by Barbara Mahany, is a UMW
book in the nurturing for community category.
Mahany carries the reader through each sea-
son starting with winter on January 1 and then
ending with winter again at Christmas. Each
season includes information on the date the
season begins, a wonder list of each season,
blessings for each, stories of her family’s life,
and ends each with a seasonal family recipe.
She writes from her Christian-Jewish marriage
that encourages the reader to pay attention,
savor the moment, cultivate stillness, and
make room for God every day. You may want
to purchase this in order to move slowly and
reap all the miracles of each season.
3. “The Reason” by Lacey Sturm is a powerful
story of Lacey’s life events that changed her
from an atheist who hated Christians into a
Christian lead singer for the platinum-selling
international rock band Flyleaf. She is now a
mother, wife, writer, speaker, and solo artist.
Her book tells her story of physical abuse, de-
pression, suicidal struggles, and her ultimate
salvation.

No temptation has overtaken you except what
is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he
will not let you be tempted beyond what you
can bear. But when you are tempted, he will
also provide a way out so that you can endure
it.
