Eastertide. The word itself sounds old-fashioned, doesn’t it? If you prefer, you can refer to this 50-day season simply as “the season of Easter.” The point is, no matter what we call it—if we remember to call it anything—is that the early church knew that the full impact of Easter could hardly be experienced in one 24-hour period. They gave us 50 days, from now through Pentecost on June 4 when we will receive our new Confirmation class and celebrate the sacraments of baptism and communion. Eastertide is a season that offers some time and space for us to grow spiritually. As our confirmands continue to learn, pray and prepare, so, too, we all are called to live deep into the power and joy that is the Resurrection. There is so much contained in that three word Easter proclamation: “Christ is Risen!” In our baptism, we affirm that we are all “incorporated into Christ’s mighty acts of salvation.” In prayer, ask God to reveal to you what this Good News means— for your personal life as a disciple of our Risen Lord and also for your witness in the world as part of Christ’s body, the church. Michael McClish shares the story behind how he came to write this piece: “I’ve sung with the First UMC choir for many years, primarily as a guest singer for special performances, and then weekly for the last two years. The structure of a Requiem is based on the 15 settings of the traditional Roman Catholic mass, using the original Latin text. Many composers have composed Requiems–Mozart, Verdi, Faure, Durufle–over 2,000 Requiems have been composed. Eastertide is a season that offers some time and space for us to grow spiritually. As our confirmands continue to learn, pray and prepare, so, too, we all are called to live deep into the power and joy that is

Our Sanctuary: Symbols of Hopeby Ron Theile“As a member of this congregation and of the Chancel Choir, I often find myself gazing upon our beautiful sanctuary. There are times I look out from the choir loft to witness those who are worshipping doing the same. It could be while we are preparing for worship, praying, listening to scripture or being moved by the music of worship. This series will help to guide us as we look at, and think about, the many sights and symbols that surround us as we worship. They are all symbols of hope, so that we will all be inspired to be the hope.” – Ron Theile

Part 15: Our final window of the Main Gallery is titled “Universality of Christ” (also called the “Triumphant Christ”). The words at the bottom of this stained glass are from the book of John, Chapter 8, Verse 12, “I am the light of the world.” In this window, Christ is standing on top of the world. The symbols included in this window are: the World Council of Churches, the flaming torch with Bible meaning that the truth lies in the word of God, and the Cross of Triumph.

I wish that this window would have had more space for the entire verse from John. The entire quote from Jesus is, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” We all should feel such comfort when we read the words, “will never walk in darkness.” How often have we been in a position of darkness, when we

really don’t have to be, when considering that Jesus died and rose again for us. Such a sacrifice as the crucifixion is and such a feeling of victory and glory at his resurrection should have us turning to the light whenever we feel we are alone and in darkness. This is an eternal light that is never extinguished. It is there for us all who believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. What a wonderful window to end our tour of the Main Gallery. By living in the light, we are always living in hope.

These are symbols of hope, so that we can be the hope.

As we enter the summer months, I will turn my attention to the “hardware” of our sanctuary as well as other important places on the property. Thank you all for your generous comments about these articles. I really enjoy researching and writing them. – Ron)

Art in the Fireside Room: Prayer Quilt MinistryPrayers and Squares, the national Prayer Quilt Ministry, began near San Diego in 1992. Churches of many denominations are part of Prayers and Squares, with First UMC becoming a chapter in 2003. Hundreds, maybe thousands of quilts have been made and “prayed,” each a gift of love. Unlike many other organizations that make quilts for charitable purposes, the purpose of Prayers & Squares is not to make and distribute quilts, but to promote prayer through the use of quilts.

A Prayer Quilt is a personal quilt, tied with heavy thread. These threads are tied with a square knot by members of the congregation during a worship service. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is offered for the person receiving the quilt. There is no cost for the quilt – it is a gift of love and prayer. It is a statement of our faith in God and our belief in God’s power to comfort, strengthen, and heal.

As our confirmands continue to learn, pray and prepare, so, too, we all are called to live deep into the power and joy that is

the Resurrection. There is so much contained in that three word Easter proclamation: “Christ is Risen!” In our baptism, we affirm that we are all “incorporated into Christ’s mighty acts of salvation.” In prayer, ask God to reveal to you what this Good News means—for your personal life as a disciple of our Risen Lord and also for your witness in the world as part of Christ’s body, the church.

Joy! Peace! Mercy! Righteousness! Courage! LIFE! Gifts of God for the people of God.

Eastertide blessings to one and all,

First UMC Spring ConcertFirst UMC and Dr. James E. Smith, conductor, are pleased to present the premiere performance of Requiem of Remembrance, composed by First UMC Choir member Michael McClish. The concert will feature soloists, chorus, orchestra, harp, organ, and percussion and will also include excerpts from The Gift of Life, by John Rutter.

Michael McClish shares the story behind how he came to write this piece: “I’ve sung with the First UMC choir for many years, primarily as a guest singer for special performances, and then weekly for the last two years. I’ve always liked to write music, starting with rock bands in high school, and then in 2009 I started writing choral and classical music.

“Around 2013 I began studying the Requiem format. The structure of a Requiem is based on the 15 settings of the traditional Roman Catholic mass, using the original Latin text. Many composers have composed Requiems–Mozart, Verdi, Faure, Durufle–over 2,000 Requiems have been composed. I thought I would try my hand at it.

“As I was in the middle of working on the piece, Jim Smith knew that I was in the writing process, and asked to hear what I had so far, so I sent him a CD. Jim said he was interested in it, and asked if the First UMC choir could produce the performance for the Spring Concert the following year! Of course I said yes, and then worked on finishing the remainder of the composition. Jim helped me with the scoring of the piece, and notating the various instrumental parts.

“I want to express what a rare opportunity this is, to be able to have a composition see production. I am very honored and excited (and a little scared) for the performance!”

Don’t miss this world premiere event!
