THE S.P.A.’S PET FOOD MONEY BANK FUNDRAISER
STARTS NOW!
Its purpose is to raise money to apply to our annual cost of feeding our resident animals (a combined average of 100 cats and dogs). We provide shelter, care (vaccinations, sterilization, medical care), and food for them until they become family companions—no matter how long it takes. We have waiting lists for dogs and cats so once we have an adoption, the vacancy is filled. Since the advent of our foster program, we are able to save more animals, but with more mouths to feed, our costs have increased. We rely solely on financial donations to survive and receive no government support. We economize, but need help covering basic expenses.
Please make a monetary deposit to our Pet Food Money Bank, 100% of which will be applied to our annual cost of feeding our family-pets-to-be. Because animals do not adjust well to changes in diet and we lack sufficient storage space, we need to cover the cost of feeding them the food they are accustomed to eating. No contribution is too little (or too big)!
Our goal is to raise 180,000 pesos or $9,000 USD. This
year’s Pet Food Money Bank fundraiser is beginning with a
bang! Thanks to the generosity of J.H. and M.E. (anonymous
benefactors who have found homes for S.P.A. dogs in the
States), all donations to the Pet Food Money Bank during
May up to 2,000 U.S. dollars will be matched! See the next page for how you, your friends, and families
can make a donation (share this issue) or click on the PayPal Donate button below. Don’t delay-deposit today and have your
donation matched!!! -Megan Gabel, General Director

May Pets of the Month By Lynn Weisberg and Joan DiPiero
Pixie is a charming, large, black female cat, about three years old, who enjoys sitting next to us for
her share of petting and wand-toy fun.
Cameron is a lovely eight-month-old female with an
inquisitive expression, an impressively-marked, tabby-striped
and white coat, and a sweet, gentle personality.
Handsome Leo, about 3-1/2 years old, is a small/
medium male dog, friendly, loving, playful and a terrific
family pet.
Lani, about a year old, is energetic, very sweet, loves walking
and running, and would be a great companion for someone
who enjoys physical exercise. Both dogs get along well with
other dogs as well as people.
Adopt any of these Pets of the Month during May and receive a free adoption kit. Our adoption fee
is 400 pesos for cats and 450 pesos for dogs which includes sterilization, vaccinations, and
deworming and, for dogs, enrollment in the Green Paw Pet Registration Program. Preview all our
available animals at www.spasanmiguel.org (Adopt Me! pages) and meet them at the S.P.A., Los
Pinos #7, Monday-Saturday between 11 and 2, 152-6124.

That's the question I ask myself every time I'm at the S.P.A. and wonder why our older cats have not been adopted. Is it because they are Black or that they are no longer cute adorable kittens (who, incidentally need to be entertained for hours on end)? What they offer are proven personalities— low maintenance, non-demanding, still playful—no surprises. Most important of all, THEY NEED YOU! Take Balki, a sleek short-haired boy who loves nothing more than letting you know when he wants attention and a lap to sit on.
There’s Aussie who is the last of his siblings and still waiting for a furrever home. Scylla is a 3-year-old placid Tabby with striking jade green eyes who originally upon arriving at the S.P.A. was shy, but has since become more outgoing and gets along well with the other cats. .
Winifred is a 2-year-old chubby Calico who waits patiently in her basket for one of the volunteers to give her scratches under the chin. She would be a perfect choice for someone who wants an only cat. Cool Carlotta, a striking tabby girl, craves attention up to a point and then lets you know in no uncertain terms when she has had enough. So if you have been thinking about adopting, please consider Balki, Aussie, Scylla, Winifred, Carlotta, or any of our older cats. They deserve a home. Please come to meet them at the S.P.A., Los Pinos 7, 152-6124, any day, Monday-Saturday, 11-2.

We Have the Perfect Dog for You! By Megan Gabel
The S.P.A. houses an average of 50 dogs with a range of personalities, appearances, and dispositions.
Here are just a few we’d love for you to meet.
A large, pretty girl, Dipper is a very strong, active, inquisitive, playful, and energetic blond beauty.
She is loveable, likes people, and obviously wants to be part of a family.
Cocoa is a medium/large beautiful dog with a calm, sweet disposition. She is an easy dog, walks well
on a leash, and is friendly.
Do you want a tough, medium/large girl who will scare away strangers, but give you tons of kisses?
That’s Lola! She goes into protective mode, and must be controlled, but once she gets to know you,
she will crawl into your lap for attention and love.
Medium-sized and slender, Nellie will be a devoted, loyal pet. She never tires of fetching a ball and
bringing it back to you. She would be very happy to curl up near you and gaze at you adoringly.
Meet all our animals at
the S.P.A., Los Pinos 7,
152-6124, Monday-
Saturday, from 11-2.
We have a wonderful
variety from which to
choose – we’re sure the
perfect one is waiting for
you!

Meet Dra. Adriana Rivera When Adriana was a little girl, she was always rescuing dogs, cats, chickens, and pigs. She loved her grandfather’s horse Alazán and enjoyed riding him every time she visited. When Alazán got sick and died, Adriana was so sad and upset she decided that when she grew up, she wanted to cure animals.
She lived in the States for several years, having migrated there with her family. She is fully bilingual. While at Emerson High in New Jersey, she decided she wanted to go to veterinary school. She fulfilled that desire and is a graduate of the Veterinary School Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla.
As a teen, she took guitar lessons, but realized she’d rather listen to others play. Her musical tastes run to Aerosmith, Matchbox 20, and
Mana. When she is not working, she likes visiting family, watching movies, and taking long walks to think and clear her head.
We are very pleased to welcome Dra. Adriana to the S.P.A.!

The Remembrance Tree exists in a
prominent position, right at the inside entrance to the S.P.A. It is a permanent, beautiful, and impressive eight-foot copper-colored structure with branches containing leaves for honoring a
departed pet.
Volunteer Jane Dill of Jane Dill Design (www.janedill.com) (thank you, Jane!) inscribes on a leaf the pet’s name, the owner’s name, and a personal message, if desired. The one-time cost of each permanent leaf is $100 US (or peso
equivalent).
