Cat Adoption of the month - love was inevitable!

“Princesa” By Joan DiPiero photo by Roxanda Goodoy

When Princesa showed up at the S.P.A. it only took a few

days to give her a most appropriate name. Demanding con-

stant attention from the volunteers and chasing away any

cats who dared to intrude on her personal space (the whole

Adult area!) she was, shall we say, not everyone's choice of

the perfect cat. Our veterinarian, Roxanda, who had named

her and admired her spunk, offered to keep Princesa in the

clinic, where she could give her attention and keep her

away from our more mellow felines. Rox fell in love with

her, and as much as she was tempted to take her home, she

had a dog who didn't like cats and a home where it wasn't

possible to separate the two. After a couple of weeks we tried Princesa back in with the other cats and found she

hadn't improved her social graces one bit, and seemed insistent that her beloved Rox reclaim her, not knowing it

was impossible. When she was finally adopted, we were relieved, but after a few short weeks, she was returned

when the owner lost patience and gave us a long list of serious health issues - constant vomiting, diarrhoea, re-

fusal to eat, lethargy, etc. A very worried Rox wondered what happened to our very vibrant healthy Princesa,

who now looked skinny and sad. After just 24 hours in the clinic, a miraculous transformation took place - Prin-

cesa was her old self, gobbling down food, no signs of diarrhoea or vomiting, and once again demanding atten-

tion from all. Whether we label this smarty-cat as manipulative or just seriously goal oriented, in either case, her

strategy worked. Roxanda, having moved to a larger house was finally able to take her favorite girl home, and

both are thrilled to be together again.

December adoptions were: Philomena, Phoebe, Phantom, Pharaoh, Satchmo, Rosie, Tinkerbell, Carbon,

Cuervo, Echo, Edgar, Daisy, Dylan, Nicola, Raisin, Corinne, Cocoa, Carmen, Rowan, Esperanza,

LaToya, Lilah, Vanessa, Princesa, Penelope, Angel, Toffee, Rosario, Luella and Panda.

“Georgie”& “Gustavo” By Joan DiPiero

Ten-month-old brothers Georgie and Gustavo have been through a lot in their short

lives. Adopted together when they were small kittens, they had several happy months

in their new home until the family situation deteriorated and they were brought back to

the S.P.A.. We were sad for them, but these cheerful siblings took their return in

stride, settling in well. They are a joy to be around although totally different in both

appearance and personality.

Georgie has short orange fur and is a ball of energy, playful, and always the ring-

leader of the cat antics.

Gustavo, with long lustrous black fur, is mellower, content to stay on the sidelines

as long as he is given his fair share of petting.

As different as these brothers are, their bond is strong. Wherever one is, the other

one follows, especially during naptime when they curl up against each other,

snoozing away. We would love for them to find a new home together since they are

so devoted to each other.

Dog Adoption for December - very adaptable!

“Cassie” and “Tessie” by Lynn Weisberg

photos by Harry Burrus

Cassie is a medium-large, extremely affectionate, three-year-old blond beauty, who

adores people. She waits quietly for her walk and, when approached, rolls over,

hoping for a preliminary belly rub. She is a strong, energetic young lady and, al-

though fairly large, believes she is a lap dog and soaks up attention. At the S.P.A.

since October, 2012, Cassie wants only to attach herself to her very own, forever

human.

Tessie is a beautiful Golden Retriever mix with lovely red-gold fur. A little over two

years old at first she is a bit timid, especially with new people. But after she knows

you, her entire body wags with delight when she sees you. She is nervous being

walked on the street, but loves to run and play in quieter, protected areas. She re-

sponds well to gentle, firm coaxing and praise. Tessie would be best as the only ani-

mal in the home and she’ll make a delightful companion.

“Salsa” Story by Lynn Weisberg

Salsa, a 3 1/2 month old puppy and the last of three siblings, has been

adopted! She arrived in November with her brother Winston and sister

Sierra, who were adopted a few weeks ago; she now has her own for-

ever family as well, and we are delighted! She is going to become

multi-lingual, as the family speaks four languages, and we have no

doubt that Salsa is up to the task!

December adoptions were: Pancho, Sierra, Salsa and Tickles

Where there’s a will, there’s a way by Megan Gabel

San Miguel has a bounty of animal lovers – generous, devoted, zealous, and caring. Our

hearts go out to homeless street dogs and cats, skinny, unsterilized, hungry, and alone.

We ache over animals who are abandoned and left to fend for themselves. We try to help

– taking the needy ones to a vet for care, feeding them, giving them water, and often pro-

viding a temporary or permanent home for these creatures. What amazes us time and

again is how forgiving they are. Life has not been good to them, but they often don’t

hesitate to cuddle up for some kindness.

For more than 30 years, the S.P.A. has worked together with the commu-

nity to provide, as our motto aptly states, “Hope, Health, Homes for Cats

and Dogs in Need.” A few years ago, the S.P.A. was close to closing its

doors because of the lack of funds. Due to the kindness of animal lovers

like you who thought beyond the present and into the future, the S.P.A.

inherited funds that have kept us going. Each month, we use some of those

savings to cover expenses. We don’t have a comfortable reserve, though.

In 2014, we had many happy-ending adoptions, none

of which would have been possible without your fi-

nancial support. Samantha has a wonderful new life

where she goes kayaking with her family. Canela

adores her plushy pink bed, playing with toys, and

her new owner. Daisy, abandoned, cold, and hungry,

has a home with a “brother” and a loving family.

Sweethearts Lady and Tramp, both formerly street

dogs, fending for themselves, were each adopted into

fantastic homes where they receive the love and care

they deserve. Kitten Carmelo traded in his baby blan-

ket for bedtime with his favorite human. Svelte

Molly is pleasingly plump now that she's set-

tled into her new home. Gonzalo and Jasper's

antics are keeping their people in great shape.

Bohdi moved to Memphis, thrilled to be

closer to Elvis. Our Facebook success stories

albums have more to warm your hearts.

The end of the year makes us reminisce and make plans for the future. Please think about the S.P.A. when work-

ing on estate planning and drafting your will. Donations of cash, property, land, and other assets of value can

make the difference in allowing the S.P.A. to continue its work in serving the community and our animals in

need. For more information, please contact [email protected]

Rosewood Rules! By Joan DiPiero

When the Human Resource Department of Rosewood San Miguel

de Allende called to request a meeting with us, we were puzzled.

Several days later, Ricardo Galvan, Marcela Naranjo, and Edgar

Licea came to the S.P.A. After we gave them a tour of the shelter,

we were surprised and delighted when they offered to help with a

project of our choice, agreeing to provide both supplies and, more

importantly, their employees who would be volunteering their time

supplying the labor. What a generous gift!

Where to begin choosing one of our much-needed projects

from our wish list? Since we are funded entirely by donations,

our budget is tight and all money goes to fill the basic needs

of running the clinic and maintaining a secure, healthy shelter

environment for our 100 resident dogs and cats. As we as-

sessed our options, we realized that the adult cat area iron

grate walls were last painted many years ago and were faded

and rusty. Even though we had known they needed work,

there were always higher priority items that demanded atten-

tion. So now we had the perfect project.

Rosewood followed through, sending a team of more than a

dozen volunteers who scraped, sanded, and painted their

way through the Cat House, with hard work, paint-splattered

clothes, remarkable humor and two days straight labor. The

results - lovely aquamarine walls that make the area so much

more inviting than before. The volunteers, staff, and adopt-

ers all seem happier in this beautified environment. We'd

love to say how thankful the

cats are for this wonderful

transformation, but they are

an unappreciative group, so

we will leave it to the two-legged folks at the S.P.A. to say,

"THANKYOU, ROSEWOOD!!!”

Come and see our beautiful “new” cattery for yourself. We’d love to show it to you Monday-Saturday,

from 11-2, Los Pinos 7, 152-6124. While you are there, you can meet some of our resident animals –

maybe volunteer and spend some quality time with them. Who knows? One (or more) may capture your

heart. The fee to adopt is 400 pesos and includes sterilization, vaccinations, and deworming. Check our

website (www.spasanmiguel.org) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/spasanmiguel) for more in-

formation.

The importance of Laboratory Tests...

By Dra. Roxanada Godoy

Lately, there have been some owners at the S.P.A. that come to know what

is happening with their lovely pets. They come because in certain way they

have recognized some attitude changes, they can be little changes or very

dramatic too.

Even pets that appear completely healthy can have hidden health problems.

Left undetected, these problems can lead into serious, even life-threatening

conditions or sometimes blood tests are essential tools for identifying dis-

eases at the earliest stage possible, when they are the most treatable, that would

be the better scenario for everybody.

Screen your pet for potential developing problems so they can be treated before

they become serious. Your pet´s Vet has to make sure your pet is healthy

enough to take certain medications, particularly if there is an underlying problem,

such as kidney or liver disease

“Establish a baseline picture of what represents good

health for your individual pet”

Basic laboratory testing has to be recommended as part of your pet’s annual examination, so those values are recorded. Your veterinarian can review your pet’s health record at each subse-quent exam, and spot any abnormalities or trends sooner, often before serious disease can develop.

Urinalysis is a simple test that can assesses the physical and chemical composition of urine. Abnormal results usually indicate that there is a problem with the kidneys and/or urinary system. However a urinalysis can also provide clues about problems in other organ systems, or may indicate the presence of a metabolic disease, such as diabetes mellitus. Urinalysis is necessary for a complete assessment of the kidneys and urinary system, and should be included in any thor-ough evaluation of a pet´s health status

To detect urine system problems a complete urinalysis can hold a treasure trove of information

Blood tests can be used to detect, treat and prevent potentially dan-gerous illnesses.

Sick or older animals often have more than once disease process af-fecting them at the same time, complicating diagnosis and treatment. Blood tests can help pinpoint specific problems.

When our pets look very sick Before anesthesia is administered, as an essential part of patient evaluation in preparation for a medical procedure or surgery. Your vet-erinarian will decide which tests are most important to run.

Before a surgery

If your veterinarian suspects a health problem and needs additional information to make an accurate or complete diagnosis.

Whenever your veterinarian recommends medications for your pet that might be contraindicated if he or she has certain underlying diseases.

.The Organic Market is never dull...and the turn out for the 6th December had a real Christmassy

aire to it...

Mrs Santa, Helen was joined by Dick and Bettye Wilson (on the right) from Texas who added a real warmth to the

day and were regulars at the shelter conferring with the “furries” in that strange accent (whom am I to talk) - Mexi-

can cats are very adaptable! Plus there was the Editor who completed the quartet.

It was great to terrorize some of our close

friends and see and speak to our supporters and

the public and thank them for their moral and

financial support.

It never ceases to amaze me as to the distance

some people travel on weekends to come here - I

I met a great couple from Monterrey who rattled

the donation jar.

However, a couple from Ceyala fell in love with

Pharaoh and they were taken to the shelter for

the adoption formalities.

Hopefully we’ll see heaps of you again on Saturday, 3rd January — who knows who’ll join us?

OK the S.P.A. has a range of Caps and T Shirts (hey but don’t shilly –shally a new size/colour range has just arrived - you don’t want to be left with the only size choice that would fit your 3 year old grandchild!!) and of course there is the recycled dog/cat food bags and other items that can be yours

for a donation....BUT the following could be the real head turner!

Mel our youngest cat volunteer (in the photo at right) is adorned by none other than a “Panda-wrap”- ideal for the fashion conscious who wouldn’t leave home without one on a cold blustery day. However, there is a catch as there is only one “Panda” (at present) so if you’re

quick he could be yours.

Late Exciting NEWS - “Panda” was adopted on Mon-

day 29th, December!

I’m told that “neck-training” could become part of the regime at the S.P.A.—how about a

“Dachshund-drape” for over the shoulders? The designs could be endless - got any ideas?

Rewarding Memberships:

I hope that your Holidays brought you everything you wished for. As you have read, it was a wonderful month

for all of the cats and dogs who found their new forever homes in time for the New Year. It was also a busy

month in the membership world.

We had renewals from loyal members like Kathleen Ellsworth (individual), Pam & Don Knoles (family),

Vicky Moore (individual), Nancy and Bob Sylvor (family), and John & Sandi Wallace (family). We were

also fortunate to get our new members the Frank Gaydos family (family), Glynnis Hawe (individual) the Bar-

bara Kalis family(family) and Lorna Pashovich (individual) join the SPA family.

Don’t forget that we can accept US checks again (so you no longer have any reason not to renew). We can now

accept checks several ways:

Pay by Mexican check to Sociedad Protectora de Animales

Pay by U.S. check to Actinver Casa de Bolsa S.A. de C.V. (mark for S.P.A.)

Pay by U.S. check to San Miguel Community Foundation (for a U.S. tax receipt) (mark for S.P.A.)

If you are not a member yet and you have any questions about an S.P.A. membership and its rewards, please visit

our link http://www.spasanmiguel.org/how-you-can-help/become-a-member/ or contact me at membership-

[email protected]. Your 40 USD/500 Pesos for an individual membership or 50 USD/600 Pesos for a family mem-

bership (2 members) can help the S.P.A. continue its wonderful work caring for many of the unwanted cats and

dogs of San Miguel while they wait for their forever homes and providing the community with low cost veteri-

nary services.

Help us make 2015 a phenomenal year and send in your donations and renewals (It is never too late to renew!).
