What you need to know• Sydney is growing and its

transport system needs major changes to avoid grinding to a halt

• There will be significant disruptions in the CBD and along the route during light rail construction

• Transport for NSW will provide clear, accessible information in time for people to plan their journeys

• Transport for NSW will assist businesses to plan ahead in managing construction impacts

• Current bus routes may change, however public transport will remain the best and quickest way to get in to the city

• Wherever possible, leave your car at home

• Expect major delays if you drive into the CBD once construction has begun

Construction schedule announcedLight Rail will transform Sydney by offering fast, reliable journeys from Circular Quay through the CBD to south east Sydney’s sporting and entertainment precincts, medical facilities, education and business precincts.

Major construction of the new route will begin at Moore Park in September 2015, with construction in George Street beginning in October 2015.

Preparatory works at nights and weekends will continue over the coming months.

Transport changes

TrafficOnce construction begins we will be asking: • all motorists to use selected priority routes and

avoid the city centre• motorists travelling between the south/south

east and north to use Broadway, Eddy Avenue, Wentworth Avenue, College Street, Macquarie Street and the Cahill Expressway

• motorists travelling between the east and the west to use the Cross City Tunnel

• motorists travelling between the north and south to use the Western Distributor and Harris Street

• motorists travelling between the west and north/east to use the Western Distributor.

The preferred driving routes will be signposted ahead of George Street works commencing to help direct through traffic away from the city centre.

Buses

Transport for NSW is improving how bus routes operate in the CBD. These changes are an integral part of the NSW Government’s plan to ensure the bus network meets the needs of customers now and into the future. The new CBD bus network will be simpler to understand than the current bus network and will better integrate with trains, ferries and light rail.Work to relocate and improve bus infrastructure, including new bus lanes and additional bus zones, stops and shelters is now underway and will be completed ahead of the introduction of the new bus network in October 2015, prior to light rail construction commencing. From October, buses in the city centre will move from George Street and operate along new priority routes on Elizabeth Street, Castlereagh Street, Park Street, Druitt Street, Clarence Street and York Street.Under the new bus network, some routes will terminate close to their entry point in the CBD, connecting with other public transport options. This means there will be fewer buses in the core of the CBD, reducing congestion, these changes will require some customers to change to bus, train or ferry or walk further to reach their destination.New through-routes will connect more destinations and reduce the number of buses that start and finish in the CBD.

Utility works on George Street at Bridge and Grosvenor Streets.

Did you know?

Over 1600 buses enter the CBD during

the morning peak.

The need for changeCongestion is already holding back Sydney’s economy. To be the city we want to be proud of, Sydney needs a modern, efficient transport system.

Sydney will grow by 1.6 million people over the next two decades and our existing networks are already congested. We need fundamental change to prevent the CBD grinding to a halt and to create a better city for us all. There will be significant disruptions to traffic during construction and transport schedules will change.

Major public information campaigns will be launched to ensure people are notified of changes for traffic and transport well ahead of time.Transport for NSW and ALTRAC Light Rail will continue to consult with communities and stakeholders and provide information on upcoming work to minimise disruptions, and to maintain access along the route.Dedicated staff will also be employed on the ground to work closely with residents, businesses and local communities to inform them of developments and provide advance notice of work activities in each area.

Major construction begins September 2015 - Major construction expected to complete mid 2018 The light rail route has been divided into 31 individual zones to minimise, as much as possible, the impacts of construction in any one area. These are listed in the table and maps below. ALTRAC can alter its construction schedule, but not the duration within any individual zone, if required. If changes to the construction schedule are required, ALTRAC must provide notice of 60 business days. The public will be fully advised of any changes well in advance of works taking place.
