VISA Global Logistics USA

Meet the Trade ManagerDamian Goodman

As we open our new USA offices and push this as our new area of expertise in international freight, we are being guided by our newest sales recruit, Damian Goodman.

Damian’s role will be to facilitate the growth of the business in this tradelane.

He is also joined by air freight manager Mario Andreacchio and ecommerce manager Jo Murphy.

VISA Global Logistics are proud to announce the opening of our newest business region, the United States of America.

As a company moving forward, VISA USA will become an imperative part of the VISA Global structure and direction. It adds to our suite of successful market expansions including Italy, New Zealand and China.

What does this mean to you?

Why the USA?The United States is the second biggest import source for Australasia with 288,640 TEU’s imported to Australia and New Zealand in 2013. There exists is a great opportunity to tap into this volume and provide VGL with an area of significant growth.

There is a lot to gain in this market; competition for business out of the USA is less competitive than some of our traditional markets such as China and only a handful of Australian freight forwarders hold true expertise in this market.

VGL also stands as an international company with its roots in Australia and through this we can leverage the similar cultural values of these two countries to our advantage.

In the next few months you will be seeing more and more about USA and the details of our expansion. Part of this will be a sales push to bring in leads and follow up to secure new business. We are trying to build a list of 1000 potential businesses so if you know of any companies who you think import from the USA it would be a great help if you could pass them onto Damian Goodman in the Sydney office.

Looking further into the future, there are also a variety of opportunities for current VISA staff. The plan is for VISA USA is to have:

• Branded VISA offices

• VISA USA contacts such as phone numbers and emails

• VISA USA Air and Ocean Bills of Lading

• VISA Global Logistics staff

In order to make this successful, the partners have recognised that our greatest asset is the expertise in our people.

Moving forward, there will be opportunities for motivated, appropriate and successful staff members to take up employment opportunities in the United States.

For any staff with a particular interest in this trade lane and the work we are planning on doing here, you can find out more from the VISA Global Logistics USA Trade Manager Damian Goodman.

Thousands of ways of getting from A to B: Every road, rail and shipping line lit up throughout the United States. (Source: dailymail)

VISA Global Logistics 2014 Sales ConferenceFrom the 24 - 30th of March this year, the partners of VISA Global Logistics hosted the 2014 Sales Conference in Bali.

The conference was held to work on sales goals, promote positive relationships and communication between the offices and discuss the growing future of VISA Global Logistics.

With 5 full session days it was a busy schedule for all, but the team also got to enjoy a half day excursion to experience the culture of their location with a trip to the famous ‘Monkey Forest’.

The feedback from all who went was overwhemingly positive, with team members learning more about the business than ever. A number of projects and action items were born and launched at the conference, which are already moving forward in a big way since returning.

As George said in his final wrap up, “the buzz” at dinner about the future of VISA was the most satisfying and exciting part of the conference.

If you want any information about the projects launched, email [email protected]

Service highlight - China Buyer’s Consolidation A sample of current Buyer’s Consolidation customers

One of our most successful services of the last couple of years has been our China Buyer’s Consolidation model. Buyer’s Consolidation is a process where a client combines all their different suppliers goods into one container at origin.

What is the process?

• Individual consignments from the client’s suppliers are received and collated at the port of origin and combined in a single 20 ft or 40 ft container

• Full Containers are shipped at regular intervals (weekly, monthly) to various destination ports, as designated by the client

• At destination, the container is transported to its final location as a closed and secure unit

What are the benefits?

• Reduced handling of product

• Enhanced security and less chance of damage to all product

• Each container has a mix of client product to meet local market conditions and requirements rather than one container full of one product

• Reduced stock holding at destination

• By shipping direct to various destination ports, inland trucking and freight costs at destination are greatly reduced

ChinaThe China team has been growing and developing on the back of continued success in this trade lane from the group. Being led by Roberto Caiulo in the South and the new Owners Representative Brendan Green in the North the opportunities in the region are only set to increase.

May will see the opening of the Yuantia-VISA 6th China office location in Shenzhen, South China. Just a stone’s throw from the Hong Kong border, and situated on the mouth of the Pearl River Delta, Shenzhen is the world’s 4th largest port and the 2nd largest in China. The opening of our Shenzhen office will strengthen VGL coverage in China improving service and opening new opportunities to our network.

Shanghai also received a visit from Australian client Ozito recently as part of the implementation of their Buyer’s Consolidation service to Brisbane. To read more about our China Buyer’s Consolidation service you can refer to our ‘Service Highlight’ earlier in OneTrack Mind.

Hong Kong Whip AroundVISA Global Logistics’ group ecommerce division Whip Parcel Logistics has been growing rapidly since it’s inception in mid 2013. Continuing to develop a service that is focused on specific international markets, the Whip Parcel team can now add Hong Kong as one of their key locations.

With the introduction of our new ecommerce manager in the region, Apple Ng, Whip Parcel is set up to handle the influx of sales leads and interest that been a direct result of the fantastic growth campaign that Jo Murphy has run since Whip Parcel Logistics’ began mid last year.

This adds to the successful shipments ex Australia to New Zealand and USA to Australia, which were both identified as focus markets for Whip Parcel from the start and the creation of WhipTrack, an online tracking service for parcels that was built by our very own in-house design team in Footscray.

With the operational side all up and running, the future of Whip Parcel Logistics is now focused on growth. We invite all VISA Global Logistics team members to share your knowledge and interest in online ecommerce, either through passing on sales leads from our current freight forwarding customers, or by completing online survey to help us capture information about how people buy online;

What is Operation Bledisloe?

A program to secure New Zealand business based on existing VISA customers in AU , particularly those in AU that have a partner / subsidiary, agent , distributor or similar in NZ.

What stage is Operation Bledisloe at?

The program has already had a number of successes with new business for our Auckland and Christchurch offices, but is yet to go into full gear. In the words of Steven Larsen the Australia Sea Freight manager for the project, “Get ready, we’re coming.”

Melbourne SydneyOur very own software development expertsOn the 29 of April our software development team from Footscray gave a presentation on the evolution of the OneTrack software platform over the last 3 - 4 years at the Melbourne Alt.Net software developer’s group.

The alt.net talks are regular monthly seminars run by the local software community.

New sales team memberNew sales executive Debora Barbagli started this month in the Melbourne office. With over 5 years experience in international freight forwarding sales and an expertise in the Italian market, she comes as a welcome addition to the team.

The cold weather has started to show itself, or, as much cold weather as Sydney can get, and we remain as busy as we have been all year.

Between the many visits we’ve had from other VISA staff members such as Richard Hammond, Robert Pelsky, Frank Vasques, Marcus Denny and new sales executive Debora Barbagli, we’ve been adjusting to a reshuffle of team member roles between a variety of Sydney staff to different departments and an influx of new staff as we grow. All this while having the busiest year of our history.

All of this adds up to an eventful environment and a team buzzing with energy. We were able to release some this hectic schedule with our inter department bowling night held on the 15th of May.

Departments competed head to head for both an individual and team prize. The winners on the night were the boys from Operations for the team and the individual winners were Corey Griffith for the men and Barbara Stevens for the women.

The VISA Sydney gang were all smiles

Fantastic News about FantasticWe are pleased to announce that after a number of months in a tender process with our client, Fantastic Holdings Limited, they have confirmed with us the re-appointment of VISA Global Logistics as provider of international ocean

freight and associated forwarder services.

In particular, the VISA Global Logistics partners would like to thank all team members who were part of the tender process for the last few months as well as all VISA Global employees who work hard every day to give FHL the best freight experience possible.

Brisbane BlurbEaster is over and unfortunately it’s time to step away from the chocolate and settle in for a busy cold season. A lot has been happening in Brisbane and we are all excited for the future, with two new additions to the office with the first one being Rachael Hughes who started last month as the admin and customs assistant and Laurence Pilgrim from the Sydney office who will be coming up to join the boys in Transport as of the 12/05.

As many of you have heard, DP World in Brisbane has automated its systems and due to initial teething problems, the Transport office have literally been working around the clock, including the Easter break and Anzac day, to give the clients the best service physically possible, which should be a nice welcoming for Laurence.

Earlier in the month the office enjoyed a team bonding session at Strike Bowling with many bruised and battered after the competitiveness of Strike’s laser skirmish.

The bowling teams aptly named “oldies” vs “youngies” saw certain people in denial, having to be told “the oldies just needed more numbers”. With all that aside, it was a great night and a much needed catch up outside of work.

Last but not least, this month is the MSC Vessel Tour at Patricks which as always, will be a great experience for both clients and staff.

Meet the team - VISA Global Logistics Partner Edition

Vittorio was born in Rome-Italia and came to Australia in 1974 (with one shoe and a suitcase full of dreams). One of his first jobs in the industry was driving forklifts for a small freight forwarder in Sydney.

Tarchi started Visa Global Logistics in 1982 out of a small office in Fivedock Sydney, it has now grown to be one of Australia’s largest privately owned global freight forwarding companies.

Victor loves how Visa prides itself on their high level of customer service, by building and maintaining genuine, long lasting partnerships with all customers. He believes VISA works at bettering their processes and services by using the energy of a diverse team.

One interesting fact that you may not know about Vittorio is, he is an avid watch collector and loves motorcycles. Victor advises the younger generation to be “CAN DO” people. Be a change agent, don’t just do things because they are “always done that way”. Use your initiative and always aim for a better

outcome than before - “I’ve walked into Visa for the past

30 years and still get that buzz - as I did in 1982. I

wouldn’t change it for the world”

Vittorio Tarchi Simon HardwidgeSimon left school at age 15 and began several labouring jobs. When Hardwidge was 21 years old, he was happily out of work. surfing, punting on dogs and shooting pool in pubs.

His mother got sick and tired of it and made him get a job. Simon soon became a runner for Kattie customs agency (now known as BCR Logistics) Hardwidge started with Visa Global Logistics in 1984.

One of Simon’s hidden talents is motorsport driving, he used to compete as a driver and even ran a motorsport team developing young drivers!

One of the things Simon likes most about the Visa team is the “can do” culture.

Simon’s advice to the younger generation is - “Don’t be afraid of

hard work, do not rush the steps up the ladder,

make sure you get a strong and varied grounding

in freight forwarding and most importantly never

never give up!”

Meet the team - VISA Global Logistics Partner Edition

Somebody once said – “George could sell ice to an Eskimo” . George developed his sales skills at a young age, by assisting his father Rolando (who worked for Cantarella Bros/Vittoria Coffee) on the road by selling to delicatessens/coffee shops around Sydney.

At age 17 George got a job in the mail room at Burns Philp shipping, who were then the agents for NYK.

Schirato joined the VISA team in 1998. He continuously motivates the sales and marketing team with his hands on approach.

His many hobbies include, a good game of golf (wins every round of course ha), fishing and watching his kids play sport.

George says – “Like any business, we have had our

ups and downs but you can always count on the

staff to be on the ball, especially when it’s needed

most, we appreciate it.” George’s advice to the younger generation is.

“Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get!”

George SchiratoGarth HarrisAt age 18, Garth took a punt and applied for an ad he read in the Sydney Morning Herald for a cadetship at a customs broker. This eventually led him to his rightful place with VISA in 1985. Garth joined as a customs broker and shortly thereafter became a Partner, starting the Sydney Transport business with a 20 year old Dodge table top affectionately known as the “Black Death”.

Harris is more than just a pretty face, he has a degree in Ancient History and always continues learning with an avid interest in Greek and Roman history.

His NRL team are the Roosters and although not many people would pick it, he’s also not afraid to show his artistic side with his collection of Royal Worcester Vases.

Garth loves the closeness of the Visa team, especially with his Brisbane family. When asked what he would say to someone just starting in freight

forwarding he says, “this is a job for life, you can build a

real career in this industry.”
