It is a time for optimism around work at the moment; we have decided to take a booth at the industry trade show in May and also Gardners are going to have a booth as well. No I don’t know if these things are “happenstance” or what, however the book projects coming up are getting better all the time. I have to admit elation when we get notes from all sorts of readers about the books. Those two lead titles I was talking about last month have really gotten readers reading. “Carrots and Jaffas” has already had many reader responses. Jeanine Jones who helps us in Perth sent me an email last Saturday to say she had just finished and the emotion was getting the better of her. I spoke with Louis de Vries about the book again today and he said he had now read it four or five times. I just hope the word of mouth, reviewers and our booksellers give it all we can. The other highlight has been the response to “The Tainted Trial of Farah Jama” - the publisher Cathy Lewis actually redesigned the back jacket last week to accommodate the sweeping review coverage the book has been getting in pre publication. With these two books it seems all Writers Festivals are going to support them and we have eBooks of both of them for those stores taking Kobo and other bookseller eBook supplies. Another great news story today was the short listing of Berbay Publishing for the Bologna Book Awards 2014 BOP - Bologna Prize for Best Children's Publishers of the Year. "The Prize has been created to recognize publishers at the forefront of innovation in their activity for the creative nature and bravery of the editorial choices they have made during the previous year's edition of the fair." Berbay Publishing is one of four publishers nominated. See link below for nominations. http://www.bolognachildrensbookfair.com/en/winners-2013/2540.htmlI reckon Berbay will have some more news stories to come this year as well. One of the other emerging stories / books is Matthew Michalewicz’s “Life in Half a Second.” I have had the chance to meet Matthew on a few occasions and each time my resolve gets stronger to place him and the book in broader and stronger business opportunities in this market place. If you get the chance catch up with him - it is an experience. In a gutsy move he has also employed a US PR agency to boost the book's image over there; we take so many leads from the US for books of the genre. The shops come and go – lousy phraseology – but this is what is happening; this week we lose Dymocks Collins Street and I believe the Horgans (Shearers of Sydney) are on the shift again as well – thank goodness Boffins

(WA) is going to a new expanded shop in Perth; this is very exciting as we will now have an award winning independent bookseller opening further into the CBD. Same thing is occurring with Robinsons in our Melbourne CBD. For those with some memory other than a terrabyte of storage we have another Ducati book coming for Father’s Day. Last time we had a Ducati book we sold it firm sale and sold in excess of 1500 copies at $80.00 – the isbn will be on www.dennisjones.com.au as soon as it is given to us.The “angry algorithm” has a friend called the “dispassionate algorithm”. We really don’t give a perfect view to consumers in the book industry with our forced choice of how we list some books. If we create a global Print on Demand edition we typically have the book listed on the databases before we release locally – so the grumpy algorithm sees the book offered at up to 100% more than our Australian selling price until our daily in stock washes over that feed and the algorithm points to us – it is a bit annoying for the industry when viewed by consumers as having weirdo pricing. The “dispassionate algorithm” rears its head when an “industry” feed does not include key books available to consumers; the case here is the show on ABC TV two Sunday nights ago with David Attenborough featuring the Natural History Museum Alive 9780957243651. Via Gardners we had arranged for all account booksellers to be offered a special 50% off UK price for this book and thank you to those who took up this offer. If however you use an “industry “ feed it is not there as those feeds are not inclusive. We are about to move away from the Lightning Source Trade Channel partner spot in this ANZ region. We tried hard and I thank my colleagues for the work put into this over the last 12 months. But, we got sick of hearing abuse over us being the party setting selling prices (and giving all parts of supply chain an operating margin) when those “recommended” prices in the bib files were fairy tales. If it starts to affect your core business then we had to make a decision to delete this part of the service to the booksellers in ANZ. As some of you will know it costs a lot of inputs to set these relationships up and when they don’t work it hurts to take them down. (Any queries please raise with myself.)

Cracking the Spine

Ten Australian Stories and how they were written

Stories and essays by ten talented writers, including  Maria Takolander, Tony Birch and Jennifer Mills. Introduction by Amanda Lohrey.

Cracking The Spine is the most innovative resource in Australian literature I have seen in many years. An anthology of contemporary short stories, each with a commentary by their authors, the collection breaks down the wall between the creative and discursive, the imagistic and the expository. Filled with cutting-edge, innovative writers and armed with an expansive definition of what it is to be an Australian, Cracking the Spine will be at once accessible to undergraduate students and informative and challenging for their teachers. What a thrill to see a work like this come about! —Nicholas Birns, editor,ANTIPODES

Brothers in Exile

Brothers in Exile is an exciting journey through Australian  history from 1812 to 1937, as the author sets out to solve the secrets of a mysterious grandmother he never knew. The saga begins with three convict brothers, a well-to-do settler and a reverend as they arrive in the Macquarie penal colony of 1813.From daring escapes, shipwrecks and exploration to squatters, gold and bushrangers, the book sheds new light on the real-life struggles and fortunes of 19th century Australian pioneers and immigrants who shaped the nation from a crude convict settlement into federation and beyond.

About the Author

An avid interest in Australian history and a chance family incident triggered a search by Leon Isackson and his siblings for information about their maternal grandparents. The more they researched, the more fascinating the information became. Fortunately Isackson had already written a hugely successful first book (and an updated version some years later) about his Rock and Roll career. He had the skills and enthusiasm to now gather this new (to him) true and wonderful material about his family into a book which encompasses one of the most fascinating and tough eras of Australian history and describes the antics of many colourful characters so well‐known to us all, whose paths crossed with those of Leon's ancestors again and again. Sydney‐born Leon Isackson enjoyed a career as a drummer extraordinaire in the most exciting era of Australian Rock and Roll, performing in what were to become famous bands, in fact great icons of those heady years. He began with Dig Richards & The R'jays in 1959, which became The Rajahs in 1964 and Johnny O'Keefe's backing band for three years. He entertained the troops in Vietnam with Lucky Starr and then Eden Kane; this led to the creation of the Australian Overseas Forces Entertainment Fund. Other famous names Isackson either toured with or recorded and arranged for were The Chant, The Delltones, Johnny Farnham, Russell Morris and the amazing Winifred Atwell with whom he played for several years. In the 90s he co‐founded The Mighty Guys with guitarist, Mick Hamilton, which made three successful albums for Glenn A Baker. Based on his diaries from 1956 to 1966, Isackson's first book, Behind the Rock, co‐authored with the late Jon Hayton, was released by Time‐Life in 1990 to rave reviews. It was then released again by Sid Harta in 2010 as Behind the Rock and Beyond, updated by Isackson to 1980. Leon Isackson lives on the Northern Beaches in Sydney with his family and, as well as writing and researching, continues to play and write music.

Massacre at Myall Creek

‘Mr Justice Burton said the present case was different from any that had ever been brought before the court.’

The Massacre at Myall Creek represents a tragic page in Australia’s history. The massacre was described by the Chief Justice, Sir James Dowling, as ‘one of the most important cases which has ever come under our notice since there has been a Supreme Court in New South Wales’.This is an updated reprint of a limited edition book published in 1993, telling the story of the killing of about 28 people camping peacefully at Myall Creek Station in 1838.A party of horsemen rode up, tied the victims, took them over the hill and proceeded to kill them.As a result of investigations under difficult conditions, and two trials, seven men were hanged a week before Christmas Day, 1838. Their trials and conviction caused an outcry in the colony. Until that time, some people saw the killing of Aborigines as no more an offence than the shooting of kangaroos.This is their story, largely as it was recorded at the time.

About  the AuthorLaurie Barber is a retired journalist whose reprint of the 1993 effort Massacre at Myall Creek is as a result of many requests. The book, mentioned in the Oxford Companion to Australian History, tells what happened in the words of the people who were there, leading to the hanging of seven men in 1838.He gained commendations in the Graham Perkin Award for Australia’s Journalist of the year, as well as NSW Country journalist of the year award, and was listed in the 1980 worldwide “Golden Dozen” for editorial writers as announced by the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors.He has published My Word and Ringo, the result of weekly newspaper columns, as well as Please Print for Country Press Australia.The author is a director of Australian Rotary Health and a former Rotary district governor. His other community interests include Probus, University of the Third Age and Douglas Vale heritage museum. He is patron of the Hastings Fellowship of Writers and represented NSW as a basketball referee. When he finds time, he tries to play bowls.A former managing editor of The Inverell Times, where he first became interested in the Myall Creek massacre, he now lives at Port Macquarie with his wife Glenda. They have four children, Tracey, Shane, Gary and Stephanie, and eleven grandchildren.

Icefall

This is the way the world endsThis is the way the world endsThis is the way the world endsNot with a bang … but a fifteen metre WAVE!

The Ross Ice Shelf in the Antarctic, a lump of Ice about the size of France, is forecast to collapse into the sea creating a fifteen metre tsunami that will race around the globe destroying much of the world as we know it.

This dire prediction, made by the British Antarctic Survey, New Zealand Scientists, and the Pentagon is ignored by most of the world’s population; but not by beautiful, smart Tanya who has worked her way up from poverty to the top of Sydney society, or, to her surprise, by her father‐in‐law David Bower. They persuade the family to abandon their happy, fulfilled lifestyles to create a secure settlement in the Blue Mountains, enabling them to survive the catastrophe but witness the complete destruction of Sydney and all of Australia’s coastal cities.  From this, the depths of despair, they find ways to start to rebuild the vibrant society that once existed.

ICEFALL – an exciting and fast paced adventure story encompassing a credible threat and an imaginative resolution.

About the Author

Guy Hallowes is a Sydney‐based author of fiction with a “social conscience”. Icefall, a thriller based on imaginary events after Sydney is wiped out by a fifteen metre tsunami, is Guy’s fifth novel. The previous four are set against a backdrop of turmoil as Africa transitions from colonial to majority rule.

From the STINKING GENIUS responsible for Pryotechnicon: Being a True Account of Cyrano De Bergerac’s Further Adventures Among The States and Empires of the Stars, by Himself (dec’d), comes a still‐warm midden of fantastical short stories.

The Author takes this opportunity to apologise for the feelings of inadequacy that will arise in those who encounter the exquisitudinal stories herein contained, or barely contained — glittering, lacy, plangent with ideas and pungent with wordplay, all touching on — sometimes delicately, sometimes with fists, sometimes with greasy intimacy — diverse curious and amusing notions, such as an endeavour by British colonials to terraform Hell (contrast with the story dealing with the late Carl Linnaeus’s attempts to classify the species of Paradise); a planet wrapped in fabric where pirates boom and roar in galleoned steam irons; a look at what it will mean to be disabled in the future … etc., etc. — a book to be handled with care, so close is its resemblance to a clutch of Faberge eggs, their Faberge chicks waiting to be hatched by the warmth of the Reader’s startled regard.

About the Author

Adam Browne was born in 1963 and lives in Melbourne, Australia. His stories have been published widely. He received the Aurealis Award for best Australian short story in 2002, and the Chronos Award for best Victorian short story in 2009. His story ‘Space Operetta’ was adapted as an animated film, Adjustable Cosmos, in 2010.Pyrotechnicon: Being a True Account of Cyrano De Bergerac’s Further Adventures Among The States and Empires of the Stars, by  Himself (dec’d) is his first novel.

‘The title does not mislead. PYROTECHNICON is a literary cabinet of curiosities filled with lush imagery and exotic notions. A delicious concoction of swashbucklery and delight. Highly recommended.’Jeff Vandermeer — World Fantasy award‐winning author of Finch.

Ned Kelly FIRM SALE Another book on Ned Kelly?Well yes and no.It is certainly a book on the Australian bushranger… but it is like no other!

In the 1970s, Artist and Historian Monty Wedd produced a weekly newspaper adventure strip that fully detailed Kelly's life.This volume collects, for the very first time, each and every eposide of Monty Wedd's monumental three year undertaking.

Wedd made Ned Kelly as authentic as possible. He told the story with an even handed approach…and…rendered it in a style that resembles earlier engravings. It was an excellent example of how to use the comic medium to teach history. ‐ John Ryan, Panel by Panel: An Illustrated History of Australian Comics

The Mystery of AE1

Australia’s first submarines, AE1 and AE2, entered Sydney Harbour in time to join the celebration of Empire Day 24 May 1914 after a voyage from Britain that The London Times declared: ‘manifestly the most remarkable yet performed by a submarine’ – 83 days, 60 of which were spent at sea. Australians were fascinated by their submarines and proud that their young navy was bravely at the forefront of such technology. Britain declared war against Germany on 4 August 1914 and the British Admiralty despatched the Australian fleet to capture German New Guinea and destroy the German Pacific Fleet. On 14 September AE1 left Rabaul Harbour, with orders to patrol east of Cape Gazelle, and was seen off Duke of York Island in St George’s Channel. Then AE1 simply disappeared. This was the first loss of a military unit during WWI and the beginning of a terrible war for Australians. An ensuing search found no trace, and for the families of the 35 officers and men onboard AE1 life would never be the same. The Mystery of AE1: Australia’s Missing Submarine and Crew traces the beginnings of Australia’s navy and searches for answers to the questions that continue to be asked: Who or what contributed to the loss of Australia’s first submarine? What killed the crew of AE1? Where do they lie? And why has Australia neglected them and their descendants?

Launch DetailsTo be launched by Brendan Nelson on 26th April in Holbrook, NSW, at a Submariners ANZAC reunion and the opening of a commemorative window for AE1 at the museum which disappeared on 14 September 1914.

The Bilingual Cockatoo

This book is a study of biographies and autobiographies of Italian Australians. It looks at full‐length life‐writing texts, including accounts of the Italian Australian experience of war‐time internment, success stories, narratives of trauma and grievance and life narratives as a form of ethnography. There is a variable zoom focus, ranging from a whole chapter devoted to a single text, to surveys of a dozen or more texts in each of four chapters. A final overview maps out a chronology and typology of Italian Australian life writing relating it to immigrant life writing generally.

Given its topic, the book has a tightly integrated double analytical focus. On the one hand, it studies the textual strategies deployed by the writers, and, on the other hand, it explores the experiential dimensions highlighted by the texts.

About the authorProfessor John Gatt‐Rutter is an Honorary Associate of La Trobe University (Melbourne) and the Italian Australian Institute, and a world authority on Italo Svevo (the pseudonym of Ettore Schmitz), a close friend of Joyce in the formative years in which Ulysses was written. John Gatt‐Rutter has spent a lifetime in Italian studies, especially literary, including 17 years as Vaccari Professor at La Trobe University, and his publications include a literary biography of Italo Svevo. He is now an Honorary Research Associate at La Trobe and at the Italian Australian Association.Writing Italian Australian lives

Dark Side of the Mind

This true story of John, a young schizophrenic man, the eldest of four boys, who grew up in Canberra at the time Walter Burley Griffin was designing the lake, in a happy home where he had fun, got up to mischief with his brothers and was regarded as a promising student.

A trip overseas as a young man when he had followed the ‘love of his life’ resulted in a bout of mental illness and the onset of schizophrenia. At the time he was physically unwell and emotionally devastated with a broken heart after their break‐up and he was such a long way from home.

This is as much a story about John’s family as well as John and the setbacks and heartbreak they experienced when dealing with the mental health authorities. It also illustrates police brutality and general lack of understanding in the area of mental illness in the 1960s until John was a forty‐year‐old man. John’s parents wrote fruitless letters to the authorities and were left with a situation where their son could not be guaranteed appropriate treatment and their minds could never be put at rest about his wellbeing. Despite the hopelessness and sadness there are glimmers of John’s wry sense of humour in this book.

John had several daring adventures and escapes from mental institutions. His parents never knew what difficult and emotionally shattering situations would crop up next.

Extraordinary You

The Positive Thinking and Motivation You Need To Live an Extraordinary Life. If you're reading my book, there's a very good chance that you're looking for change in your life. So to make sure you get the most benefit out of the information on every page, here's how I suggest you go about reading it. Firstly, make a commitment to read the entire book from cover to cover and set a date by which you want to have it finished. Buy yourself a wealth creation and goal setting journal, which we will call your Wealth Creation Journal (you'll learn more about this in Chapter 1). Every chapter contains a series of exercises and questions that I strongly encourage you to complete as you go. You can complete the exercises in your Wealth Creation Goal Setting Journal, but if you have the printed version of this book, I have also left space within these pages if you'd prefer to write your answers there. Finish every exercise in each chapter before moving onto the next if you really want to live an EXTRAORDINARY life! You may find that some of the personal development exercises and actions you decide to take will challenge you and push you out of your comfort zone. This is a positive and very normal part of introducing changes to your life because it means you are growing and getting closer to the result you want. So push through these 'growing pains' and don't give up. If you are having major relationship troubles, family issues, poor health, ongoing financial crises or other turmoil then you may feel that this book is too optimistic, or not, for you. I encourage you to make sure you are getting enough support, maybe therapy or counselling but keep reading. There may be simple techniques  mentioned that help you shift your mindset so you understand that while things may not look like they are heading in the right direction in your life yet, there are tools you can use to plan and design your future. Keep looking forward at the great things that are possible in your life .

the wilderness years

The Wilderness Years ‐ a parents' survival guide is a book that offers solace for mothers as they battle across the landscape of child‐rearing.It is a voice of reason cut low across the incessant babble of how to's and don't do's that plays in the background of parenting. It gives credence to the first 5 years of motherhood and acknowledges the physical and emotional sacrifices all mothers make."There are times when you will huddle under a blanket on the sofa furtively eating chocolate and praying for divine intervention. Or a natural disaster." Witty and inspirational, "The Wilderness Years" transcends parenting styles and techniques, socioeconomic groups and choice of pet. In a time where everything is about the children, it is a book for the parents, about parents, by a parent.

Abigail and the Terror

In the seventeenth century colonial town of Salem, Pastor Parris’ household grows larger with the coming of his niece, the young Abigail, cousin of his daughter, Betty. The girls are fascinated by the colourful slave Tituba and her story telling; the woman from Barbados has cared for the motherless Betty all of her life. If Abigail had not come to Salem Village, would the events that later took place have been averted? If Abigail had not been jealous of Ann … If Pastor Parris had had any courage at all … If people hadn’t been terrified of the accusers … If Tituba had not taken the girls to the forest … If they had all not been so immersed in superstition and religion … would it have taken so long to halt such a foul outbreak of sanctified murder? All the sermons and fasting in Christendom could not have prevented the fear that engulfed Salem. It manifested on three levels: terror of the Devil; terror of witches and their supposed power of direct physical harm, and terror in the hearts of those accused as witches and wizards. Was Abigail guilty of mass murder? Did Pastor Parris deserve forgiveness? Was Tituba responsible too? What was the real cause of the girls’ afflictions? The Salem witch trials were an extreme event in a devil‐ridden era. Abigail and the Terror is a gripping tale of persecution, cleverly woven together by inhabiting the minds of Abigail, Betty, Pastor Parris and Tituba.

Missing, Presumed Undead

…the world of Casablantasy, where shining kingdoms are certainly not spread like blue mantles beneath the stars. Instead, the City: wherecorporate greed meets foul necromancy; the unrelenting advances of Maginology and the subtle menace of the Guilstapo exist beside squalid City breed cut throats and ogres with exaggerated axes.

Here, the legend of Franklin ‘Stubby’ Mynos begins: a be‐spectacled minotaur with a mind for Kryptic Krosswords and a stomach for Hurghian coffee. There’s a killer on the loose, which is hardly news in a City crawlin’ with killers; but this killer—The Hightown Hacker—is killing the wrong kinds of people, in the wrong kinds of places. City commerce is suffering. Rich and powerful people are getting scared. The City Watch’s Magicrime Analysis Division (MAD) can’t buy a trick, and the Body Politik Registry wants to pay Frank a stack of Swine to do the deed.

It’s his first big case, the one that would put him on the map, but he’s not interested. He’s more into some dead body swiped from the Embalmers’ Guild and the ever‐burgeoning zombie workforce: how they’re recruited and have they got a Union?Forget what you’ve heard. This is the truth … or, at least, the facts strung together in a meaningful way.

The links courses of Great Britain and Ireland are one of the greatest wonders of golf. Spanning the islands from the remotest clifftops to the most windswept of sand dunes, they express the full wild splendour of some of the most rugged and beautiful areas in the world. For golfers they are as challenging as they are awe inspiring, as players must contend with hazards which range from the increasingly ferocious wind to animals grazing on the fairway. Beyond that, they truly represent the history of the game, a legacy to be treasured and preserved as well as enjoyed.

In one of the most ambitious and comprehensive undertakings in the literature of the sport, David Worley has re‐photographed, rewritten and added to his original book which was first published to rave reviews in 2007. He has reviewed almost every links course throughout the British Isles, 165 in total. This volume includes detailed appraisals of each course, together with over 500 colour photographs which show the courses in all their magnificent beauty. 'Another Journey Through the Links' is indispensable for anyone with an interest in that most spectacular and unique of sporting environments, the links course.

Red in the Centre 2

After the success of the first 'Red in the Centre' journey for radio, Monte Dwyer was commissioned by Channel 7's Sunrise programme to go bush and re-create his spontaneous storytelling style for television. But not everything went as planned. This book follows Monte's evolution from struggling technophobe to self-assured multimedia something-or-other, as he travelled the land in search of the stories seldom told. 'Through the Crooked Lens' is a celebration of life beyond suburbia, a quirky snapshot of remote Australia taken by a man with an eye for detail and an acute sense of fun.

Are they really turning the old atomic test site at Maralinga into a tourist park? Why did Gulflanders know 2011 was going to be a monster wet season? And what exactly is the H chord anyway? If you don't know the answers you need to read this book. Monte Dwyer is a freelance multimedia journalist and a fine storyteller to boot. Looking for the H Chord is the third in the 'Red In The Centre' series and his best yet. From the Qld floods in early 2010, through The Great Victoria Desert and the Kimberley, across the Top End into Arnhem Land, then all the way back to Qld just in time for the unprecedented 2011 wet season, Monte explores the "cobwebby corners" of Australia and her people. Looking for the H Chord isn't just a good read, it's a trip around the country without leaving home. Get your 'ticket' now!

Early in 2007 I was scrounging around for publicity for my first book (Slapped by an Angel, co-authored with Kym Crosbie), when I was presented with an interesting counter-offer by Charles Wooley, who I knew from my television days at Channel 9. In essence the deal was I could plug Slapped all I wanted, providing I jumped in a campervan and ventured out 'where the horizon meets the sky', sourcing and broadcasting stories for Charles' radio program, Across Australia. So out I went. When I set off I had no real idea what to expect, indeed I was too pre-occupied with trying to promote the book to pay much attention to what was going on around me. But slowly the journey changed me, and one by one the people I encountered opened up my narrow, city-centric view of the bush, and left me with a snapshot of rural Australia early in the twenty-first century. I spoke to many hundreds of people engaged in all sorts of weird and wonderful pursuits, and had the rare experience of seeing the country through the eyes of the people who know it best. In other words, this was no holiday jaunt from one tourist attraction to another, but an honest look at life in regional Australia. From drought to flooding rains, through changing seasons and federal governments, I wandered the country listening, learning and gathering as many threads as I could manage, before sewing them together to form this patchwork quilt of book called Red in the Centre.

The Camros Bird

Inheriting a passion for writing and travel from great, great grandfather, author and adventurer, Louis Becke, Diana began writing at an early age. A talent for ballet changed her direction, and as a teenager she travelled to London to study at the Arts Education School.

Returning to Australia she began working in professional theatre, touring the country for many years with music theatre and later straight drama. Her entire working life has been as a performer, with leading roles in theatre, film, television and radio.

In her 20's Diana became politically active and co‐founded Actors for Nuclear Disarmament and later her interest in Human Rights led her to join Actors for Refugees as producer/performer and writer. Her story, 'Willy Willy in Woomera" was published in the anthology 'Acting from the Heart'.

A late‐starter at University, Diana studied screenwriting at R.M.I.T. when she was 50, and her short film scripts for children, 'Take 2' were published and distributed in schools. Diana has been able to combine her passions for travel and writing with trips to Indonesia, where she has worked as Playreading Coordinator, producer and actor with the prestigious Ubud Readers and Writers Festival in Bali.

The Camros Bird charts one person’s developing relationship with an asylum seeker, but in parallel it sensitively and disturbingly reveals what has happened in Australia’s treatment of asylum seekers.Diana has for years been intensely involved in the refugee issue, and has great insight into the way Australia has responded to the arrival of boat people. That insight was evident in her excellent chairing of a session about boat people at the Ubud Writers’ and Readers’ Festival - Julian Burnside AO QC This is a terrific story - vivid, moving and utterly gripping. I couldn't put it down. You write very well and it's a story, among many, that urgently needs telling.I am glad to have read it. - Hilary McPhee

Two Selkie Stories from Scotland

Two beautiful traditional Scottish fairy tales, The Selkie Bride and In the Kingdom of the Seals, are brought to  enchanting and haunting new life by two creators who are themselves eerily linked to the magical world of the shape‐shifting selkies, who are seals in the water and humans on land.  For Kate's ancestors were the McPhees, who, legend says, are descended from the union of Dougal McPhee and his melancholy selkie bride, while Fiona's McDonald ancestors, lairds of the Western Isles, have a strange connection to the McPhees as well, a connection she only discovered while working on the book!

'The tales, told by an author with an obvious talent for folklore, would make an excellent choice for young readers looking for a unique alternative to standard titles, and would be a beautiful introduction to the rich world of folktales.' (Junior Bookseller and Publisher, Term 1 2014)
