    Deadline for Stacktalk Submissions

To get an article or ad into Stacktalk, it must be re-

ceived before the tenth of the month in which it is to

be published. Send it to volunteer editor Caitlin Ch-

    ciuk at [email protected].

President's Message:First I want to thank the Beyer family for a great time at their open house and their ongoing support of the ATHS.

One of our members, Alex Szekula has had a heart attack and is in Morristown Hospital recovering. He is in our

    thoughts for a speedy recovery.

Last month I asked for 20 members that haven't been involved with the mailing of iers to call me so I can send

them 20 iers to hang up at locations in their area. I had ONLY ONE RESPONSE. Thank you, Larry Ashley, for

stepping up to the plate. We need to get more iers out to the public in areas that haven't been hit yet. It is up to the

membership overall to get this done. The attitude seems to be don't worry someone else will do it. This isn't how

it should work. By getting iers out in new areas we will not only get a few more trucks at the show, but we will

gain additional income from donations. PLEASE HELP.

A reminder that the next meeting is a week early, WED., MAY 22, because of the National show in Washington.

I have only heard from a few people who want to be in the MEMORIAL DAY PARADE on MAY 27th in PARSIP-

PANY. Please call me or drop me an email if you want to be included ([email protected]).

Keep in mind that we are still short people on the list to help at the AUTOMATIC SWITCH SHOW.

Only an hour of your time is needed. Please step up.

Good news: We have ordered new club tee shirts! We should have the shirts at the May meeting. The price will be

$17 each, or $30 for two shirts. We have all sizes, childrens through 4X.

The list of members who attended the meeting at Beyer Ford is omitted this month because only half the peoplesigned it.

Thanks, and see you on May 22nd.

    Over the RoadBy Dave Read

    Chapter Historian

Our subject this month is a lowly old 1953 Brockway 260-XW that belonged to the ESSO Hum -

ble Oil & Rening Company, which I drove way back in 1960. It's true that Brockways had a sheet

metal cab over a wooden framework, and wooden oorboards, that emitted oil and exhaust smoke

up into the cab. Power came from a 572 cubic inch overhead valve Continental six cylinder en-

gine, and most, as this one did, had a ve speed Fuller transmission, and an Eaton two speed air shift

rear axle which you could split for ten speeds. They weren't fast, but could they ever haul a load.

This was a bunker oil rig, meaning that it was set up to haul #6 black oil, used in most of the big buildings, including

all of the apartment buildings in the Bronx, where I worked it. Bunker oil is the messiest product you can haul. At60 degrees it is a semi solid, and it has to be heated to about 120 degrees to load it and also to pump it off. It is as

black as pure black enamel, and any that you spill has to be wiped up immediately, before it gets cold. If it does

get cold, a rag soaked in #2 oil or Diesel will usually soften it up. The buildings had heated storage tanks, too.

This particular trailer had two compartments, a 2800, and a 2700 gallon, and 5500 gallons weighed around

39,000 pounds. Some were split 3000 and 2500. I worked out of Pelham Manor, New York, and we served

upper Manhattan, the Bronx, and Westchester County. In the daytime we'd do four loads, which usually con-

sisted of two straight 5500 gallon drops, and two splits, where one compartment went to one address, and the

other one to another. At night the usual score was three 5500 single drop loads, because we worked ten hour

days, and eight hour nights. In this picture, Ralph, our mechanic is back there xing a faulty left turn signal.

Driving a Brockway was always fun; they steered like a dream, because of the Ross Cam and Lever steering gear,

but if you stepped down too quick on the accelerator pedal while the engine was still lugging, they would pop back

through the carburetor, causing more acrid smoke to rise up through the oor. Three miles to the gallon was about

as good as the mileage got, but they cackled nice out of the tailpipe. This truck has the Deluxe cab, told by the curved

end glasses in the windshield, and the cab usually had rear corner windows. You also got a automobile style horn

ring on the Deluxe model, but not much else. The garden gate type grille guard was a tradition with Brockways,

and on many privately owned trucks, they sold large block letters to mount on the grille, giving the owners initials.

Work was tough in the winter as it was tough getting to each buildings' ll box, which was located at the

curb, especially after a snow storm, and God was it cold on top of the trailer loading the oil. But I guess

when you're young, every day is a new challenge. I wouldn't trade my years on the road for anything.
