AN EDWARDS EPISTLE PENTECOST = the third great Festival of the Christian ecclesiastical year!! THIS SUNDAY!!! 9:30 A.M. We celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the gathered community amazing them and sending them out into the streets of Jerusalem to share the Good News with strangers. Suddenly their fear of being Jesus-people was cast aside by the joy and strength of the Spirit and they became very vocal in telling people from all nations about Jesus. Too often we resist the Spirit’s movements in our lives. We continue to let our insecurities and fears short-circuit relationships which God desires for us to have. Those early believers boldly went in the Spirit and began to communicate with people from every nation. Read the story in Acts 2. This Sunday I hope you’ll worship with us as we celebrate how the Spirit has operated/is operating in our lives, individually and communally. We will gather in the Fellowship Hall wearing red, orange and yellow colors of the tongues of fire that came upon those early believers. We will get loose in the Spirit – singing, clapping, laughing, parading, waving, eating, dancing, hugging, caring for one another. This year we will be joined in worship by our brothers and sisters in Christ from the Iglesia de Dios Pentecostes. (They have changed their Sunday afternoon worship to be with us.) We’ll celebrate the Spirit in Spanish and in English. We’ll share Christ’s Table together. Hopefully the Spirit will move among us connecting us to one another as our service concludes in our Pentecost brunch. Two words are significant: inspire and enthusiasm. Inspire is derived from the Latin for “breathe upon or into”. St. John celebrated the gift of the Spirit Easter evening when the Risen Christ met the disciples behind closed, locked doors: Jesus breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” As we inhale the breath of Jesus, the Spirit, we become filled with the presence of God. Enthusiasm is derived from the Greek “in God.” When those early believers breathed in the Spirit, their enthusiasm could not be contained and the doors into the world were thrown open and they ventured into it. Are we willing to breathe in the Spirit the Risen Christ offers us and become enthusiastic for God’s sake in the world? LETS CELEBRATE PENTECOST TOGETHER SUNDAY!! "Fun" raiser a huge success, thanks to you! Support came in many ways for the "Fun"raising lunch and silent auction for the Intergenerational Mission Trip to Colorado. Many thanks go to those who helped prepare the delicious soup lunch, youth that produced the slideshow of past mission trips, friends and groups that donated baskets and other items for the silent auction, those who purchased baskets, and the many people who came out to support this mission effort. Together we raised over $3000, which will be used for transportation, supplies, meals, and other costs associated with the Colorado mission trip.

Pray for Mission Trip Participants!

“Soaring in Spirit and Service”

Child Protection Policy Training Child Protection Policy Training has been scheduled for June 2 at 10:45 a.m. immediately following worship for those who are assisting with Vacation Bible School or who need to renew their certification.

Vacation Bible School June 10-13 9:00 a.m. to noon

Vacation Bible School has been set for June 10-13. Come join the fun at the Everywhere Fun Fair. Everywhere Fun Fair takes children to a global celebration with the look and feel of a world’s fair. Children will make friends with neighbors around the world and discover that God’s love can be found everywhere, including their own neighborhoods. Children will be introduced to special places from all over the world and discover that we are all neighbors and all children of God.

Everywhere Fun Fair is easy to lead with exciting attractions such as interactive Bible storytelling, global games, rockin’ music, super science, cool crafts, and more! Contact the Church, Kristen Kulling or Leslie Baldwin to be part of the excitement. For the second year in a row, VBS is completely free of charge for all participants!

And, this year, a sack lunch will be provided to every child that participates in VBS! Volunteers AND kids can register for VBS online! Registration is now open. Just go to the church website (www.stillwaterfpc.org) and click on the VBS tab. Forms are also available in the Narthex.

Do you have a spare map or two? Vacation Bible School planners are asking for your help with donations of maps. All types of maps would

be appreciated – state, country, world, large, small, color or not. Place them in the box in the Narthex marked “VBS.”

Preschool News from Director Dana Brown Happy May! The sprinkler system is installed in the Peace Garden and the benches, deck and gate are all completed as well! Thanks to all of you who helped make this project a reality! This school year has flown and we have only two more weeks. Recently we honored our moms by hosting Mother’s Day Tea Parties. Next week is our

famous “Mud and Water Week.” All of the things parents do not like because of the mess will be done at preschool next week! Our last day of school this year is Friday, May 24th. Let me take a minute to say thank you to our wonderful teachers! They are fantastic and have made this year a great year. If you have not heard, Ms. Bonny Mullen, the 2 year old teacher, is retiring at the end of this year after 27 years of service to this program. Over the years, Ms. Bonny has touched the lives of many, many families! Thank you, Ms. Bonny! Enjoy your time.

The mission focus of VBS this year will be Payne County Youth Services. We will be collecting the following items all week during VBS:

• toilet paper

• tissues

• toothbrushes/toothpaste

• deodorant

Suggestions Requested for Church Officers

The 2013 Nominating Committee is beginning the process of selecting nominees for next year’s church officers. You are invited to suggest members for nomination to serve as Elders, Deacons, Trustees, and Nominating Committee. Officers are elected for a three year term (except young adult/youth Elder and Deacon). Current officers are listed on this page. Please complete this form and place it in the offering plate or in the box in the Narthex.

Elders are chosen by the people. Together with the ministers...they exercise leadership, government, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a particular church as well as the church at large…Elders should be persons of faith, dedication, and good judgment... (Constitution of the Presbyterian Church)

Deacons are called to witness the Christian faith by providing a ministry of care, compassion, and concern to all members of this congregation, sharing joys and sorrows and supporting in time of stress and need. Deacons are there to help in crisis situations. Deacons encourage the congregation’s involvement and support in local ministries of service and compassion.

Trustees are responsible for our physical facilities and act as our legal corporate officers.

Thanks so much for your generous donations to our clients of tissues and toiletries. These are items that are always in great need. Thank you The staff and clients of Wings of Hope

To our friends at First Presbyterian Church Thank you so much for the donation of $300 to The Saville Center. As you know, each year hundreds of children suffer the devastating effects of child abuse in our community. The Saville Center aims to lessen the trauma by providing forensic interviews, medical evaluations, therapy and victim advocacy in a child-friendly, home-like environment. This work would not be possible without the generosity of our donors, who choose to “Be the One” to make a difference? Thank you so much for your continued support of our organization – so proud to be a part of this church family. Brandi White Executive Director, The Saville Center

Dear Prayer Shawl Ministry Ken & Rita Breuninger recently brought me a prayer shawl made by your ministry – it is beautiful and warm. I really appreciate the thoughfulness of your ministry and the Breuninger’s. And I appreciate all of the prayers from you church members. God is good! Love Allison Christy

Love Feast Our church serves Love Feast on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 6:00-6:30 p.m. at the south campus of First United Methodist Church, 2823 S Husband. If you are interested in helping serve or cook, please email Cynthia Gedra at [email protected].

DEACON’S CORNER

Deacons Food Offering Basket Your gifts of non-perishable food and personal items to the shopping cart in the Narthex are more valuable and more appreciated than ever during these difficult economic times. The items are distributed to

local agencies who help those in need. All items are appreciated but please consider bringing a sack with items that could create a meal for a family (such as spaghetti sauce, noodles, vegetable, and fruit.) Look for items that are simple to prepare and shelf stable.

Providing these simple, inexpensive things can really help your “neighbor.”

Home Communion The Board of Deacons are able to take Communion to members who are homebound. Please notify Deacons Gerrit Cuperus (377-1653) or Brandi

White (880-2483) or the Church Office (372-5580) if you or someone you know would like Communion brought to their home.

Summer Outreach — Community Lunch on Tuesdays This summer, the Deacons and other willing servants will be offering a free community meal each Tuesday from noon-1:00pm in the Fellowship Hall (in addition to the regular Community Brunch on Saturdays 11:00am-noon.) This meal is open to anyone, and we would appreciate your help in spreading the word in Stillwater, especially to those who may be in need of a nutritious meal and Christian fellowship. The first Lunch will be June 4 and they will continue through August 13.

Embracing the Future Pledges We are completing the 3-year pledge period for Embracing the Future renovation campaign. We are still paying off the loan for the renovation and it is important that we receive what you had committed for this project. Please, check your quarterly giving records available at the church. If you have questions, contact Ben DeWalt, FPC Financial Secretary. Some extended their 3-year commitment for a fourth year (the Universal Love Campaign). This continues through April 2014. We are grateful for all who have contributed and have made possible the renovations over the last three years of our facilities (elevator, Worship Center, Youth Suite, Hospitality Area, automatic doors, church school rooms, offices). It is easy to enjoy all these improvements and forget that our financial responsibilities continue until the loan is repaid. Thanks to all who have faithfully and consistently paid their pledges.

NEWS ABOUT PW Circle Meetings: Circle 1 - May 22 9:15 a.m. in Hospitality Area Circle 2 – May 22 9:15 a.m. in Small Dining Room

Many thanks to each of your for your support of PW this year. Thank you notes were received from Jenny Fowler for the donations from PW for the Mission Auction in May and one from Nila Matzat, President of CWU, for PW women who attended the CWU luncheon. PW women will be hosting the women of Cimarron Presbytery on August 24th and we would love to see a great turnout of the women in our church. Leslie Sweatt from Enid, Oklahoma became the new Moderator for Cimarron Presbytery in March. She will be presiding at the meeting. Board Members of Cimarron Presbytery will meet June 15th in Enid. Our next luncheon will be September 11th when Sandy Cohlmia will be our guest speaker. The topic of her program will be "Presbyterian Youth Programs." Our Circles will not be meeting June, July and August; meetings resume in September. Have a great summer. Madaline Harding, Moderator

Caring Conversation Cards Family Ministry Council will be placing a Caring Conversation Card on each table in the Fellowship Hall during each brunch fellowship after worship this summer. The card will contain one or two conversation starter questions, and will change each week. Our hope is that this will encourage and facilitate caring conversations among church members, especially between those who may not know each other very well.

Taking Faith Home How do we carry each Sunday's message into the rest of life? Family Ministry Council is re-subscribing to Taking Faith Home, a weekly ½ page resource to help individuals and families keep up faith conversations and actions throughout the week. This resource can now be distributed electronically! Email [email protected] and include "Subscribe" in the subject line of the email.

University Outreach—Thank You! The University Outreach Committee gave out 50 finals packets to University students the day before final exam week at OSU and mailed 12 packages to our out-of-town student members. These packets included treats, wholesome foods and prayers to help students during their finals. Thanks to the collaboration of Preschool Director Dana Brown, Preschool staff, and Carol Trapp, the outside of the sacks were decorated by our Presbyterian Preschool children. Thank you to the many members who made and brought cookies!--and we give thanks for the hands that made light work of filling packets and making sure they got to students. We are grateful for your help in caring for students among us.

This year students were hosted for University Movie Nights by Nancy and Gary Simpson, we thank them and those who helped provide meals, including Jim and Carol Trapp, Mary and Jerry Burson, and Lisa McGaw and John Gelder.

If you would like to assist in welcoming OSU students in the fall, please contact University Outreach chair Jim Showalter.

Continued Blessings On August 31, 1967, Alice A. Hastings’ estate donated mineral rights to First Presbyterian Church for some land in Noble County. Ms. Hastings became a member of our congregation in 1900 and entered the Church Triumphant in April 1967. She had a sister who served as a missionary in Brazil and was killed in that service in 1927. In December 2012 we began receiving oil and gas royalties from this gift. To date, we have received $ 19,473.87 in oil royalties and around $ 1,000 in gas royalties. The Session has designated these monies to be deposited in the Major Repair and Maintenance account. Have you included the work of Christ in your estate planning?

Pentecost Offering - May 19th On May 19th we will be receiving the Pentecost Offering. Giving to the Pentecost Offering makes it possible for the church to encourage, develop, and support its young people and address the needs of at-risk children. Forty percent of this offering will be donated locally to support Head Start of Coyle. Church member Jean Whitehead is a Head Start teacher and will share information with us during worship on Pentecost Sunday.

Next Sunday, May 19, during worship, FPC will celebrate its graduating high school seniors Matthew Dunn, Justin Fowler, Isaac Johnson, Kade Shelton, and Trevor Wilson. Please join us as we acknowledge their accomplishments, celebrate their time with us, and send them off with our love. That evening, all youth are invited to meet at Mexico Joe's at 5:00 to celebrate our seniors at the traditional Mexico Joe's Senior Dinner. The church is buying dinner for each senior; every other youth needs to bring money to pay for her/his meal. Youth and parents, pay attention to your emails, facebook messages, and tweets about summer activities. Katie and Kristina have plans for lots of fun: Taco Tuesdays, FroYo Fridays, movie nights, a trip to Whitewater (and, perhaps, the zoo or a Red Hawks game), a lock-in, a swim party or two, and a Bible study based on the History Channel's mini-series, The Bible. Thank you, thank you, thank you to our volunteers who made this year a good one for your youth. We so appreciate your belief in and love for our kids.
