Summer is approaching, school is just weeks away from letting out, and activities are picking up at GYC. You can be

confident that Management, Flag Officers, Committee Chairs and Board of Directors are doing an efficient job keeping

all operations of your Private Club in top working condition as we now enter our busy season. Our calendar is full of

activities for members of all ages.

Again, special thanks to Sam Vasquez and Jay Funderburk who both manned up and dug deep holes along our bulk-

head, working with Louis Bell and crew, to concrete many problem areas along the perimeter of our harbor. I might

add, it was done under budget. Great Job!

Given our current reduced initiation fee, our membership rolls continue to slowly increase. Eight new members joined

in early April, and nine more were accepted for membership at the last Membership Committee Meeting. Remember,

bringing our membership rolls up to pre-Katrina numbers will help all aspects of GYC operations. Now is the time to

identify previous GYC members, good friends and co-workers who could enjoy our beautiful facility and excellent ser-

vices.

Speaking of excellent service, our staff continues to provide great hospitality, food and services under the direction of

Steve Chatelain, our General Manager. Please remember we have our 3rd Floor, The Commodores Ballroom, along

with the other Private Rooms, all with great views I must add, if you need to reserve one for your next Business

Meeting or Family Function.

I invite you to come out to our GYC Flag Raising Opening Day Ceremony, Regatta and Deck Party, May 11, 2013. The

Flag Raising Ceremony is scheduled to begin at 12:58pm, weather permitting. In addition to being part of the annual

rituals of our flag raising ceremony, Father Louie Lohan will be present to bless our Fleet. This will give you the oppor-

tunity to have your boat blessed if you participate in the Boat Parade. You may also be able to board some of our larger

boats and go out and watch fellow members have fun in somewhat competitive sailboat races. The last time we did

this it was great fun. Plan to come out for the entire day, the club serves breakfast starting at 8:00am, lunch at

11:00am, if you want a bite to eat before the ceremony begins and we will provide a buffet for the deck party following

the Regatta. The schedule is posted in this Log for your review.

And finally, please make time to mark your calendars for all the events posted in this log sheet.

Dr. Michael Seicshnaydre See you at the Club,

WHEN DOES MY CHILD LOSE HIS/HER STATUS AS A DEPENDENT? Last month, we concluded our discussion pertaining to when a member’s dependent child loses his or her status as a “Dependent Child,” that being the time when the member’s offspring must become a member in his or her own right if he or she desires to continue using GYC with all the rights of a Resident Member. We left you with this: “If you are a member and you have children who have married or have attained the age of 23 years, they can no longer use your membership status to use the yacht club. They must become a member in their own right.” (Emphasis added). That’s right! Make application, get accepted by the board, and pay a huge initiation fee capped by annual dues. Whoa !!!! That could be expensive.

However, if you, the parent, have been a Resident Member for at least 20 consecutive years, your child has certain priv-ileges. He or she, who is married or is about to become 23 years of age shall be exempt from those expenses if they are proposed for membership in their own right no later than December 31 in the year of their 23rd birthday st or year of marriage. See Bylaws, Article II, Paragraph 4(b). Article II, Paragraph 7(c) provides that “... Dependent Children accepted as a member shall be exempt from initiation fees.” Article II, Paragraph 7(a) provides that “When children of members are accepted as members in their own right prior to the end of the year in which they are no longer Dependent Chil-dren, they shall be exempt from dues until the year following year in which they become a member.”

Remember, for a member’s Dependent Child to get these special privileges, the parent must have been a Resident Member for at least 20 consecutive years. If any of you qualify as a Resident Member and you have a child or children who are in danger of losing their status as a Dependent Child, get their membership application filed quickly before De-cember 31st of the year the Dependent Child reaches the age of 23 years or December 31st of the year the Dependent Child is married.

Stay tuned!!!! Next month, on special request, we shall visit again the use of the swimming pool by guests. That subject was addressed thoroughly last year, but needs “polishing up” before the swimming season starts.

The ladies auxiliary luncheon was held on April 20, featuring the art of yoga by Shanti Yoga Studio. Tania Bayne, the instruc-tor taught meditation techniques and many yoga stretches that will help improve the wellness of the mind and body.

Everyone enjoyed their delicious meal that was prepared by Chef Jason. I would like to thank all our hostesses. Dean Hunter, Elaine Schmidtling, Sandy Morrison and Sherry Trullen-der. Many attendees won the roses that were the centerpieces for the door prizes. The bridge winners were, 1. Nancy Wheeler, 2. Sandra Shanks.

We are very excited about our guest speaker, Tim Murphy, for the May 15, meeting. He is a local photographer and illustrator who published many Mississippi books. He will be available to sign books.

It is time again for the polishing of the GYC trophies. It will be held on Thursday, May 16, from 10-12. Any volunteers will be served wine and snacks. Please call Dottie Long if you would like to help at(228)539-3305. Hope we see everyone at the May meeting.

SWIM LESSONS AND SWIM TEAM PACTICE:

IT IS RECOMMENDED TO ATTEND AT LEAST 3X’S WEEKLY IN ORDER TO MASTER SWIM SKILLS. Our goal is for each child to learn optimal swim skills. Discipline will be strictly enforced. If a child is disruptive during practice, a timeout discipline will be enforced. Safety for all children is our main concern. Parents are required to pick up children after practice. COACHES ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR CHILDREN AFTER PRACTICE. PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND AND ASSIST WITH VARI-OUS JOBS DURING SWIM MEETS. The coaches will contact you prior to meets to discuss job options. The meets will run more smoothly with your assistance. If possible, please notify one of the coaches if your child is unable to attend a meet so we will not schedule them on a relay team. The meets are held on Tuesday evenings approximately 5:00 and generally last 3 hours. If your child has transportation problems, please notify one of the coaches to assist you and your child with this need. Participation in the meets is encouraged but not mandatory. Each child is encouraged to swim a variety of strokes. This is to enhance individual improvement and team competitiveness. We must accumulate times on each child’s individu-al strokes prior to Championships. BATHING SUITS-GIRLS-NAVY BLUE ONE/TWO PIECE-- BOYS-NAVY BLUE TRUNK OR JAM-MER-MAY HAVE A STRIPE ON THE SUIT-PREFER RED. We are smoothly sailing right into May 2013 with quite a few events booked at the club. Check your calendars and try to attend some of the festivities the club offers. The Entertain-ment Committee under the direction of Sandra Boddie and Kathy Hage, has a great line up of member events through the summer. Sunday, May 5th, we celebrate Cinco de Mayo starting at 6:00pm in the Regatta and Chart Room. Also, May 11thand 12th are two events you may want to consider. Satur-day, May 11th is the GYC Flag Raising Opening Day Ceremony, Regatta and Deck Party; Sunday, May 12th we have our Mother’s Day Brunch. Reservations are required for Moth-er’s Day Brunch and we offer two seating’s- 11:00am and 1:00pm. This Brunch fills up quickly and normally has a waiting list. If you make a reservation and do not show up for the Brunch without calling and cancelling, your reservation you will be billed 100%. Saturday, May 25th is the Ship Island Rendezvous.

Our Tiki Bar and food service is scheduled to open Friday, May 17th and remain open through Labor Day. The hours of operation set to start the summer will be Monday through Sunday, 11:00am to 6:00pm. The hours will adjust as sailing, swimming camps and schedules change throughout the sum-mer. As we continue to juggle and balance our House Opera-tions based on the current economy and continuous product and fuel increases, you may see a few minor price adjust-ments in our menu selections and some operational changes. Any changes will be for the benefit of the club and will have very little effect on the services provided.

Lastly, I wanted to thank the Board of Directors, Committee Members, Ladies Auxiliary and Members for the very kind and thoughtful condolences when I lost my Father last month. It has been a tough road for me and my family and the flowers, plants, cards and prayer offerings on behalf on my father remains close to our hearts.
