Throughout the industrial training period, i was given an opportunity to intern at T.R.Hamzah & Yeang Sdn. Bhd, under the supervision of Ar. Andy Chong, one of the person in charge for the firm. T.R. Hamzah & Yeang Sdn. Bhd. is based in Taman Sri Ukay, Ampang. This company is well-known for its sustainable , green and ecological design, and they are the only architecture firm worldwide that delivers ecologically and authentic super green architecture and masterplans.

The difference between this firm and the others is its signature super green that go beyond rating systems, such as Green Mark and LEED. The firm integrates design systems that work seamlessly with the natural environment and is pioneering environmentally comprehensive design approaches that are revolutionising green architecture.

My first assigned task was to prepare a presentation and report for Fo Guang Shang, Puchong, on suitable flooring, lighting and the application of suitable floor furnishes throughout the building. After completing the assigned job, i understood the importance of choosing the right material to enhance the feeling of religiousness in the building.

Throughout the week, i’ve also participated in amending and sketching floor plans for a private residence, which is located in Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam. I was given the chance to design the landscape for the roof top garden. Other than that, i was given a task to take part in the Zumtobel Award along with my colleague, Marion. The house that we’ve submitted for the competition is the HRH House ( His Royal Highness House ). In the award submission, i’ve helped to prepare drawings, rendering as well as amending cad files.

From the assigned task, i’ve learned different kind of sustainable design features such as bio-filtration system, which helps to clean the pond area with minimal maintenance. I’ve also understand the benefits and ways to maximise the usage of passive cooling devices to minimise the usage of mechanical ventilation system.

During the weekend, we were called back to the office as there will be a submission on the upcoming Monday. I was given a chance to take part in a transportation hub project, located in TUDM Kuala Lumpur. As the project is private and confidential, hence no appendix will be attached for this project. From this project, i’ve understand how a transportation hub should work.

Besides that, i would like to thank Chace, my design team leader as i was given the opportunity to design a 40-storeys residential project, which consists of 13 towers, as well as several affordable housing. Throughout the week, i did several sketches and 3D models for the client. I’ve learned how to incorporate greeneries into high rise buildings, design of carpark podiums and how a building should oriented towards the positive views.

Other than that, i’ve taken part in designing the Low Yat Masterplan, which was a project placed in Bandar Tasik Puteri Rawang. I was assigned to CAD and photoshop the masterplan for the client.

From the Low Yat Masterplan, i’ve understand the rules and regulations from ( Garis Panduan Negeri Selangor 2012 ), about the building offset requirements and building size for terrace houses, bungalows and semi-d houses.

During the internship, i was assigned to take charge of publications, which includes the office planner, award submission for ArcAsia Architecture Award and Dato’ Dr. Ken Yeang’s Dubai Architecture Workshop booklet ‘ Designing the Green Ecoinfrastructure’. For the office planner, i was assigned to design the cover and the structure of the booklet.

As for the ArcAsia Architecture Award Submission, the chosen building for the submission is Reynold House in Johor Bahru, Fo Guang Shang in Johor Bahru, Ganendra Art House in Selangor, Roof Roof House in Ampang and Solaris in Singapore. For this project, i was the person in charge for the whole submission and there’s a list of submission requirement that we need to submit. The submission requirement includes drawings, project write up as well as a set of photographic documentation. Throughout the submission, i’ve cleaned CAD drawings, render, and prepared the presentation for the submission.

Reynold House is an experimental building design where the comfort cooling is provided by integration with an extensive water feature and pool for evaporative cooling and extensive sun shading devices. Through doing the submission for this building, i’ve learned how to use different passive design such as water feature, bioswales, usage of cross ventilation as well as environmentally benign materials for the building. This project incorporated the brief and the requirements of the client, while thought carefully to accommodate the lifestyle, culture and comfort of the occupants.

As for the Fo Guang Shang Institutional Complex, the client aims to return favour to the future community through design features of a green building that causes the least impact to the environment. This building had been carefully designed to maximise the comfort of the occupants, using naturally provided ventilation and day lighting. Through this building, i’ve learned different layouts for a religious institutional building, as it is a very rare project.

For Ganendra Art House, it is a small building located in a sub-urban area. This art house is an experimental structure where it can be used a house, a lecture hall, forums as well as the social art-related events. Ganendra Art House is special as it had incorporated a technology which was normally used in the middle east, but was never used in Malaysia. The vertical wind chimney was designed and used in the building to catch wind and helps to minimise the usage of mechanical ventilation system. This is a very special technology and can be experimented for future usage.

From the Ganendra Art House, i’ve learned different kind of passive design such as adjustable ventilation louvers that helps to extent wind flow into the internal space, and it can be manually controlled by operable glass louvers. This building is also famous for its external landscaping that can be seen throughout the art house, such as the vegetated green ramp, green terrace and green balcony. These landscaping helps to enhance the aesthetic of the house, while enhancing the air quality throughout the house.

Another house for award submission is Dato’ Dr. Ken’s House. Roof - roof house is designed as a life size working prototype of his bioclimatic design ideas. This house is punctuated with openings to accommodate the tropical climate of Malaysia with the most suitable passive designs.

Roof Roof house is a very special house as it is inspired by the umbrella. The double roof system is an open system and it acts as an enclosing layer meant to protect the house from the overhead solar radiation. From this submission, i’ve learned how to design ecologically while minimising the usage of energy in the building through passive designs.

Other than all the above, i was given a chance to prepare a slides for the Garden International School’s student. Alongside with my colleague, Teen, we were invited to the school to give a talk on how T.R. Hamzah & Yeang Sdn. Bhd. works, what architect does and how do we emphasis on green and sustainable design when one of our concept is near nett zero energy efficient. It was a good experience as i was given a chance to inspire kids younger than me, and i’ve learned various presentation skills from Teen.

Moreover, I’ve took part in designing a toilet for a medical centre. I was given the

plan and all i need to do was to built a 3D model and design the interior of the toilet. Rendering an interior is different from rendering presentation boards. I’ve used photoshop to render the interior as our task was to design several options for the client to choose.

From the task given, i’ve learn how to render interior using photoshop instead of 3D renderers such as 3D Max. Furthermore, my last task assigned was to design a booklet for Ken Yeang’s workshop in Dubai. I was in charge to contact the person in charge, Dr. Jihad A. Awad, regarding the layout and the structure of the booklet. I’ve designed a few cover pages for the booklet and discussed with Dr. Jihad regarding the booklet.

As this project is private and confidential, hence no appendix will be attached. However, through this project, i’ve learned how to use Indesign to design a booklet and it is a very rare experience as i use photoshop to edit my stuff most of the time. Other than that, i’ve learned how to communicate with the professionals using formal email and formal language.

In conclusion, from this internship programme, as all the task that i’ve involved are early stages, i’ve learned how to develop my built form more steadily and smoothly with the help of my colleagues. I’ve also learned different kinds of sustainable and passive design in order to save more energy. These passive design are very new to me and i found them useful and it does attract my attention as i aim to be an architect just like Dato’ Dr. Ken Yeang did. To him, i understand that buildings can be utilised and respond to the conditions of the environment such as wind, rain and sun.
