How about this weather? As of today, while I am writing this, it is beautiful outside. I sure

hope it stays that way. I hope you all have your prospecting gear in shape and ready to go.Now if we could just get the price of fuel to drop, it will be a good summer.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the Road Clean-up. We had a good turnout, and that

makes the job go much faster and leaves more time for eating.

Thank you to everyone who has signed up to help at the upcoming GPAA show. I hope it willbe a success. I would like to extend a special thanks to Kim, my husband. He has spent a good

amount of time making bags of gold bearing sand and insuring that every bag has the sameamount of gold in it. It is a time consuming process and I really appreciate his doing it.

Be sure to attend Mays meeting and learn how to do wire wrapping and/or a little bit on dows-

ing. I hope there will be something for everyone.

The Spring Fling is coming up also. Please help make this a success. Last year we had 18members show up and it was very disappointing. I truly hope the turnout is much, much better

    this year.

Watch for upcoming interviews in the newsletter. This should be interesting. Happy prospect-ing!!

    Dip-Box

The dip-box is useful where water is scarce and where an ordinary sluice cannot be usedbecause of the terrain. It is portable and will handle about the same quantity of materialas the rocker.

Construction is relatively simple. The box has a bottom of 1- by 12-inch lumber to whichare nailed 1- by 6-inch sides and an end that serves as the back or head. At the otherend is nailed a piece approximately 1 inch high. The bottom of the box is covered withburlap, canvas, or thin carpet to catch the gold, and over this, beginning 1 foot below theback end of the box, is laid a 1- by 3-foot strip of heavy wire screen of about 1/4-inchmesh. The fabric and screen are held in place by cleats along the sides of the box.

Overall length may be 6 to 8 feet, although nearly all gold will probably collect in the first3 feet. The box is placed so the back is about waist high; the other end is 1/2 to 1 footlower. Material is simply dumped or shoveled into the upper end and washed by pouringwater over it from a dipper, bucket, hose, or pipe until it passes through the box. Thewater should not be poured so hard that it washes the gold away. Larger stones (afterbeing washed) are thrown out by hand, or a screen box can be added to separate them.Riffles may be added to the lower section of the box if it is believed gold is being lost.

    Long Tom

A long tom usually has a greater capacity than a rocker and does not require the labor ofrocking. It consists essentially of a short receiving launder, an open washing box 6 to 12feet long with the lower end a perforated plate or a screen set at an angle, and a shortsluice with riffles. The component boxes are set on slopes ranging from 1 to 1-1/2 inchesper foot. The drop between boxes aids in breaking up lumps of clay and freeing the con-tained gold.

A good supply of running water is required to operate a long tom successfully. The wateris introduced into the receiving box with the gravel, and both pass into the washing box. The sand and water pass through the screen's 1/2-inch openings and into the sluice. Theoversize material is forked out. The gold is caught by the riffles. The riffle concentratesare removed and cleaned in a pan. Quicksilver may be used in the riffles if the gravelcontains much fine gold.

The quantity of gravel that can be treated per day will vary with the nature of the gravel,

the water supply, and the number of men employed to shovel stones into the tom andthen fork them out. For example, two men, one shoveling into the tom and one workingon it, might wash 6 cubic yards of ordinary gravel, or 3 to 4 cubic yards of cementedgravel, in 10 hours.

A tom may be operated by four men--two shoveling in, one forking out stones, and oneshoveling fine tailings away. Where running water and a grade are available, a simplesluice is generally as effective as the long tom and requires less labor.

Testing Gold DensityThe density of pure 24K gold is about 19.3 g/ml,

which is much higher than most other metals. As

a rule of thumb, the higher the density, the purerthe gold.

Weigh your piece of gold. You will need the

weight in grams. Fill a vial, that has millimeter markings on

the side, with water. It doesnt matter how

much water you use as long as you dont fill

the vial to the top as the water level will rise

    once you immerse the gold.

Note the exact amount of the water level Place your gold in the vial. Take note of the

new water level and calculate the difference

between those two numbers in milliliters.Density = mass/volume displacement.

Sample calculation:Your gold item weighs 38 g and it displaces 2

    milliliters of water.

Using the formula of [mass (38 g)]/[volume dis-

placement (2 ml)], divide 38 by 2. Your result

would be 19 g/ml, which is very close to the den-

    sity of gold (19.3 g/ml)Different gold purity will have a different g/mlratio: 14K 12.9 to 14.6 g/ml 18K yellow 15.2 to 15.9 g/ml 18K white 14.7 to 16.9 g/ml

    22K 17.7 to 17.8 g/ml

Sandy Patterson worked her way up from Secretaryto her current position as President. Sandy and her

    husband, Kim, joined

NUPA about 10 years agowhile attending a GPAAshow.

Sandy has always beeninterested in prospecting.

    When not digging for

gold Sandy is digging inher garden so as she putsit all my hobbies involve

    digging in dirt.

The biggest nugget Sandy has found (fingernail

size) was during 3 weeks in Alaska prospecting onthe beach. Her favorite claims are Phifer Creek and

    Nupa 5 in Idaho.

Dave DeHeer is one of the original foundingmembers and the club Parliamentarian. Dave

and Curt & Gae Dayton decided in 1992 to form

a club with an interest in prospecting, gems andminerals.

    They advertised their

intentions in the localnewspaper and held

    their first meeting

where approximately300 people showedup. The club has

    been in together

    since.

If you get a chance tovisit with Dave at a meeting or outing he islikely to have some great stories to share.
